Maitreya %as born and raised in 7anda, near )agoya, in Japan. 1rom an early age he soughtto find truth, and attained enlightenment through meditation, %hich he then follo%ed through
teaching and sharing %ith others. 7e completed a Masters degree in uddhist Theology, and
for a %hile after%ards li&ed the life of a en uddhist monk. 7is eperiences as a en
uddhist monk led him to feel that monastic eistence %as too harsh and infleible for
modern teaching and application of meditation and uddhist ideas. Maitreya left Japan and
tra&elled to Thailand, India and )epal, %here he taught meditation for se&eral years. ;n the
in&itation of a friend Maitreya &isited (ngland, %here he began teaching and lecturing at
&arious (nglish uni&ersities, including Cambridge, Deading and Eancaster. Fhile &isiting
)ottingham Maitreya learned of the old pig#farm property for sale in )orth Clifton, %hich he
decided %ould be a good base from %hich to teach meditation, and in *+- Pureland
meditation centre %as born.
Maitreya began the serious %ork of creating the Pureland Japanese garden in *+?<. 7e had no
pre&ious gardening or agricultural eperience. The flat featureless land %as re#shaped into
small hills around a ne%ly dug central pond. Earge boulders %ere brought in from a
>erbyshire quarry, %hich helped form the %inding paths and %alk%ays. (lements %ere
positioned harmoniously, and to reflect Maitreya"s philosophical ideals. Maitreya completed
most of the %ork by hand o&er many years.
8t the core of Maitreya"s philosophy are the follo%ing principles9
• 'elf#a%areness.
• 7armony %ith nature.
• Peace # the most important thing in our life.
• Meditation pro&ides you %ith peace, and also lets you be in touch %ith your inner self.
• The purpose of life for human beings is not /ust to pursue one"s "%ordly" life, but more
importantly to realise one"s True 'elf.
• Eife is for us to e&ol&e from "ego" eistence become to 'elf 8%akened.
• Eearning meditation enables us to become 'elf 8%akened.
