January/February 2019

Happy New Year Arrowhead Beach!!

As I wrote in our last All Around Arrowhead issue, the APOA Board of Directors was very busy this past year focusing on the business of Association. We look forward to even more exciting things this coming year.

We sponsored the 2nd Community EXPO. Local agencies around Chowan County volunteered their time to showcase their services to our community and people across Chowan County. Last July, members participated in the 2nd annual Arrowhead Beach Parade. They decorated their golf carts, bicycles and vehicles. We celebrated Arrowhead Beach volunteers at the yearly Appreciation Dinner. Thank you for your service to our community.

The APOA held its 3rd annual Fall Festival. Most recently, the APOA held our 3rd annual food drive. Fifty seven (57) pounds of food was donated to the Edenton Chowan Food Pantry. Thanks to the family that donated. The Edenton Chowan Food Pantry serves over 500 people, including children and seniors.

Traditional activities such as the annual Easter Egg Hunt, Opening and Closing the Park, Clean Up days, Covered Dish Dinners will continue. Members are encouraged to participate.

On January 12, 2018 the Board of Directors presented and

approved the 2019-2020 Proposed Budget. The budget will be given to the APOA membership for approval. Our goal continues to ensure the financial strength of the APOA. The Board of Directors worked for many hours to develop a budget that addresses the needs of the Association without imposing additional financial burden on members. In that effort, we continue to vigorously pursue members that are delinquent in their financial obligation to the APOA and

continue to work on your behalf in that effort.

Mark your calendar for ONE of the three budget presentations scheduled at the Clubhouse on Thursday, February 7th at 6pm; Saturday February 9th at 10:30am and Saturday March 9th at 10:30am.

On January 12, 2019, Becky Yeackel, Nominating Chairwoman, reported the

nominees in good standing to be placed on the election ballot. The Board unanimously approved the nomination of incumbent Board members Brenda DeMoulin and Steve Mullen, and new Board hopefuls Kathy Lillard and Richard Bartoli for the 2019 election to be held this spring. We are delighted APOA members are interested in running for the board.

Kenny Nowlin, our longtime resident, board member and dedicated volunteer made the personal decision to not run this year. Kenny has provided immeasurable guidance, work and commitment to Arrowhead Beach.

The Watch Report By Dana Nicholas Neighborhood Watch

Committee Chairman

During the holidays, NW members kept an eye out for packages being delivered and left out on porches as well as neighbors who were out of town. On Halloween night several patrols of NW members went around the neighborhood, giving

out candy and keeping an eye on stray ghouls and goblins. Please consider your neighbors when you burn leaves and natural debris on your property. Excessive smoke from wet leaves can get into homes and can be dangerous for people with breathing and heart problems. Burning trash is never allowed. According to the North Carolina Forest Service, permissible Residential Burning includes “open burning of leaves, tree branches or yard trimmings originating on the premises of private residences and burned on those premises in areas where no public pickup is available and such burning is done between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. and shall not create a nuisance.” Be considerate of your neighbors by being aware of the location, time and wind directions when planning leaf burning. If you are interested in volunteering on the Neighborhood Watch Committee, please email Dana Nicholas at [email protected] with “Neighborhood Watch” in the subject line. Budget Preparation for Fiscal Year 2019-2020 The budget for fiscal year 2019-20 which begins May 1st has been completed and was approved by the Board at the January business meeting. Now it is up to you, the homeowners, to approve the budget at the annual meeting in April.

Budget presentations for members will be held in the clubhouse on Thursday, Feb. 7th @ 6 PM; Saturday, Feb. 9th @ 10:30 AM and Saturday Mar. 9th @

10:30 AM (these last 2 will follow the business meeting). The budget will be included in the March/April newsletter for approval by the

membership. The results will be given at the annual meeting on Saturday, April 6th, 2019. Please attend these important

presentations to learn how your Association spends your money!

CONGRATULATIONS Pvt. Caleb Holler USMC, who just graduated from basic training with the Marines and is home for a short time before heading off again.

He graduated on Jan. 25 and will be home with mom, Paula Holler and family and friends for 10 days. Good luck in your military career and thank you for your service!

Please keep Gay Beaman in your thoughts. She is home recuperating and doing well.

Margaret Tolbert is at the Brian Center in Hertford, Room 307. She would be blessed to have her friends and neighbors stop by to say hello.

Condolences go out to Wade Belch and family whose mother recently passed.

Also to Betty Twine’s family who passed recently at the age of 91.

Condolences as well to the families of Michael Scalpi of Arapahoe Trail and James Yarbrough of PowhatanTrail.

If you know of anyone with a recent family event please contact us at [email protected] with “family” in the subject line.

December Covered Dish a Hit! December’s covered dish supper was held on Saturday, Dec. 1st, 2018

and was hosted by Chuck & Brenda DeMoulin. 32 people attended and feasted on homemade appetizers, entrees and desserts galore. The next covered dish will be the Valentine’s Day dinner/dance to be held on Saturday, Feb. 2nd and will be hosted by

Dana & Colleen Nicholas. Hope to see you there!

Elections for 3 seats on the APOA Board of Directors are coming up in April. The March/April newsletter will be mailed to all property owners on or about March 3rd and will contain a ballot for elections to the Board of Directors.

The ballot will also have several items to vote on: the APOA budget, the APOA schedule of events and a member initiative. The ballots must be returned to Nominating Committee chairman Becky Yaeckel by 5 pm, Thursday April 4, 2019. This year, the ballots will NOT be going to the office. Directions on how and where to send the ballots will be available in the March/April newsletter.

New ramp at office For the ease of some of our less mobile members and to come into compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, the APOA Board of Directors approved the building of a

new wheelchair ramp and step for the entrance to the main office. The construction was done by Travis Lilly who did a remarkable job.

He will continue to help the board maintain ecology activities such as water testing. There are not enough words to express our gratitude and thankfulness for all Kenny has done for our community. At the January 12, 2019 business meeting, Lisa Bullock reported that she resigns from the Board of Directors. Her family is moving later this year. While we are saddened by her departure, we will miss her and thank her for her tireless commitment as the Director in charge of legal matters.

Valentine’s Day BrowniesValentine’s Day Brownies

Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter melted and slightly cooled

1 cup granulated sugar

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup all purpose flour (spooned & leveled)

1/2 cup cocoa powder sifted

1/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup M&Ms

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350. Line an 8x8 baking pan with parchment paper or aluminum foil, leaving some overhang. If using foil, spray well with cooking spray and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together the butter and sugar. Add in the eggs, making sure to mix well after each one. Mix in the vanilla until combined.

3. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, cocoa powder, and salt.

4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and whisk until well combined. Gently fold in the chocolate chips.

5. Pour the brownie mixture into the prepared baking pan (the batter will be very thick). Evenly sprinkle the m&ms over the top.

6. Bake at 350 for 25-30 minutes. You will know the brownies are finished when the edges start to slightly pull away and the top looks done.

7. Allow to cool completely and cut into squares.
