MARK’S MESSAGEThe heavy snow, cold temperatures, school delays and cancellations that we’ve experienced over the past few weeks are nothing unusual for us; yet closing for a “snow day” is never an option for hospitals. I want to thank all employees, providers, and volunteers who enabled the hospital to remain fully operational by putting our patients first. Many of you woke up an hour (or more) early to shovel your driveway, shuffled carpools or daycare, and even stayed in a nearby hotel to avoid a terrible commute in the morning to make sure you made it to work. Many employees spent hours rescheduling outpatient appointments and fitting in patients who needed to be seen more urgently.

It takes teamwork to take on big snowstorms at a hospital. Thank you to Incident Command for your leadership during these storms. A big thank you to Facilities and Environmental Services for keeping the hospital safe – both inside and outside – and clearing our parking lots and walkways for patients, visitors and employees. Our Valet Services staff also endures a wide range of weather conditions assisting people with parking which is invaluable to many of our patients and visitors.

Your dedication to Anna Jaques does not go unnoticed and is appreciated. And good news – the days are getting warmer and longer and the snow is already starting to melt!

EXCItING CHANGES FOR COAStAL MEDICAL ASSOCIAtES & KAY FICHt, MDAfter more than 15 years of private practice in the Merrimack Valley, Kay Ficht, MD, has decided to open a “concierge medicine” practice, Your Choice Medical, that will open in Newburyport in April 2017. Concierge medicine is an alternative to a traditional primary care practice where patients pay an annual membership fee for high-touch, high accessibility preventative care.

As Dr. Ficht makes this transition and leaves Coastal Medical Associates, Robert Slocum, DO, joins Lydia Jeffcoat, MD, to offer comprehensive primary care at One Wallace Bashaw Jr. Way, Suite 2003, Newburyport.

Dr. Slocum brings with him a wealth of experience treating people from all walks of life with all types of medical concerns. He is also an Osteopath, is trained in applying manipulative therapies, and in recognizing the interplay between musculoskeletal issues and global health.

Coastal Medical Associates, Dr. Ficht and Anna Jaques Hospital are proud to provide patients with excellent choices for their healthcare and the ability to choose the type of care that works best patients and families.

Dr. Lydia Jeffcoat and Dr. Robert Slocum offer comprehensive primary care at Coastal Medical Associates.

Dr. Kay Ficht will open Your Choice Medical in April 2017.

VASCULAR LABORAtORY RECEIVES REACCREDItAtIONAnna Jaques’ Vascular Laboratory was granted a three-year reaccreditation by the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) in the areas of peripheral arterial testing, peripheral venous testing, visceral vascular testing, and extracranial cerebrovascular testing. IAC accreditation is a “seal of approval” that patients can rely on as an indicator of consistent quality care and a dedication to continuous improvement.

The IAC reaccreditation process reviews the training and experience of the technologist performing the procedure, the type of equipment used, and the quality assessment metrics each facility is required to measure - all of which contribute to a positive patient outcome.

Congratulations to the Vascular Laboratory on this accomplishment and a special thank you to Derek Butler BS, RVT, RDCS, RDMS, RT(R), who led the credentialing process.

NORtHSHORE MAGAzINE PUtS tHE SPOtLIGHt ON AJH IN MARCH ISSUE

Northshore Magazine gave readers a glimpse into what drives President & CEO Mark Goldstein and his passion for community health, healthcare and Anna Jaques Hospital. Read an excerpt below…

“…Goldstein instituted a regular rounding team when he became the hospital’s CEO in 2015, with all of Goldstein’s seven vice presidents doing regular rounds in teams of two. Besides listening to staff, the senior team members cover topics to improve

the hospital experience, called ‘rounding to influence.’ One month it was the importance of checklists, and another time the topic was eye wash stations—always, as Goldstein says, “bringing a safety story to the floors.”

“We listen to staff,” Goldstein says. “They don’t get everything they want, but they get an answer and we get some quick, easy wins. While we’re doing that, we’re building confidence in the staff. And it’s fun.”

FIVE Docs NamED to “top Doctors” LIst Northshore Magazine published its annual “Top Doctors” list of area physicians as ranked and provided by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., a healthcare research and information company. The “Top Doctors” list features five physicians on the Anna Jaques Medical Staff reflecting the level of high quality professionals and care available at Anna Jaques. AJH doctors named to the list include:• Daryl Colden, MD, Colden & Seymour Ear Nose Throat & Allergy• Kay Ficht, MD, Coastal Medical Associates• Claire Fung, MD, Radiation Oncology• Thomas Liu, MD, Newburyport Gastroenterology LLC• Gabriele Southgate, MD, Anna Jaques Cancer Center affiliated with Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center

PAtIENt KUDOS“I had to write to you to commend the exceptional and compassionate care shown to my sibling and to me by the nursing staff. From the bottom of my heart, I cannot say ‘thank you’ more. As someone who has dear friends as nurses at Anna Jaques, I know how special this hospital is, and the kind of people employed as nurses there. Again, I cannot thank your nursing staff enough. Their kindness was an unexpected Christmas gift, and I will be in perpetual thanks for what they’ve done for my sibling and my family.”

“I wanted to share what a fine job your staff did when caring for me. If I had to be in a hospital, I’m glad to have been treated as well as I was here. The ‘workup’ was very thorough and all of your staff were great and had a friendly manner and obvious competence.”

“I lost a sick note that my son needed for school. When I got to the Emergency Department and told them about losing the note, the actual doctor from the week before came out and filled out a new order and even asked how my son was feeling. It was that personal touch that each and every staff person gives you that keeps me coming back.”

“I just wanted to let you know that the special today, the Jerk Chicken and Avocado Cobb Salad, was delicious. You should definitely make this again soon.”

“The Chicken Provencal Salad today was outstanding. The basil really made it special. Loved the crisps, too. Very good! Thank you!”
