A NOTE FROM PASTOR DAVE: The name January comes from the mythological Roman god, Janus. The interesting thing about Janus, of course, is that he had two faces. This has always worked for people because the act of crossing into new year should also include looking back at what has been. In this spirit we note that 2019 ended the tenure of two very special people at St. Martin’s. So, we will thank God for Barbara Hoffman- Krickbaum and Pastor Bill Gilroy! Barbara retired after 30 years as our Building Manager. Her model of faith-based stewardship to keep our facilities in pristine condition and to do so in the most economical way, has been inspirational. We will celebrate her ministry (and thank Freddie) on Saturday, January 11 th at 6:00 pm in the gymnasium. This is a pot-luck so please come and bring something to share as we say “well done, good and faithful servant!” The following week we have an opportunity to thank Pastor Bill Gilroy who came out of retirement to provide pastoral leadership while I was deployed to Africa. Bill’s kindness, wisdom, energy, and amazing pastoral presence enabled the family of faith to make great strides in 2019 and so we are grateful. One of the wonderful initiatives Bill brought to us is a congregational talent show which will take place on January 19 th at 3:00 pm. At this new fellowship event (bound to become an annual tradition) we will oooh and ahhh, laugh, sing, and… thank God for Bill and Nancy! I sincerely hope that you will make it a priority to attend both gatherings as we look back and say thanks to God and to Barbara and Pastor Bill. Looking ahead to 2020, I’m excited about our life together. Obviously, I’m happy to be home but I’m especially joyful and honored to serve our Lord at St. Martin’s. Since I’ve been away for a long time, my agenda in the next few months is to simply find ways to be with you all. I want to find out how you are, highs and lows of 2019, and where you sense that God is calling us in this new year. Finally, a lot of folks have been asking if I plan to do a presentation on my deployment to Africa and the answer is yes. On Thursday, January 23 rd from 7:00-8:30 pm I will share pictures, stories, and observations (geared towards adults). I’ll also do a kid/youth friendly version after that at FISH on Sunday, January 26 th , 9:00-9:45 in the Fellowship Hall. I remain deeply thankful for all of you and your ministry in the name of our Savior. May His abiding presence bless us all and give us strength as worship, serve, learn, and grow in 2020. The name January comes from the mythological Roman god, Janus. The interesting thing about Janus, of course, is that he had two faces. This has always worked for people because the act of crossing into new year should also include looking back at what has been.

In this spirit we note that 2019 ended the tenure of two very special people at St. Martin’s. So, we will thank God for Barbara Hoffman-Krickbaum and Pastor Bill Gilroy! PGA’S GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANS FOR 2020

Last October Pastor Bill arranged for a golf outing to Ocean City, and seven golfers from St. Martin’s and an eighth from St. John in Linthicum made the trip. All who went had a great time and came back pleased by the experience they had.

Pastor Dave, hearing about this while overseas and sorry he had missed out, has expressed his desire that the event be planned again for next year so that he can go as well. He has now named it the PGA, which stands for PASTOR GILROY’S ANNUAL (GOLF TOUR).

Arrangements have already been made for next year’s event. The dates are 30 September through 2 October 2020. This is a Wednesday, Thursday, Friday schedule.

On Wednesday, 30 September, we will play Man O’War at Glen Riddle. On Thursday 1 October we will play the Rum Pointe Seaside Links. On Friday 2 October we will play the Links at Lighthouse Sound.

The cost of the event will be as follows:

• Golf and a Single Room at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront: $498.08

• Golf and a Shared Room at the Holiday Inn Oceanfront: $418.04

• Golf Only: $211.00

The cost for golf includes greens fees, cart, and unlimited range balls. Complimentary coffee, tea, fresh fruit, and a morning paper are included with the rooms. Meals will be an additional expense.

If you are interested in playing, please let Pastor Bill know as soon as possible. Tee times fill up quickly for these package deals, so we will make the end of January the deadline for registrations. Once the deadline has been reached and the names submitted for registration purposes, a waiting list will be established for those who want to go but were not able to register in time.

This is a lot of fun, and tremendous fellowship, so if you want to play, please let Pastor Bill know as soon as possible. His email address is: [email protected].

The Chaplain’s Corner

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness – on them light has shined. Isaiah 9:2

As we begin the New Year, let us be a little reflective. Last month as we passed the

shortest day – i.e. twenty-four hours with least daylight – we looked to the coming again of light into the world. That light came at Christmas in a manger, long ago. This

coming of the Light was God’s promise to us.

We know that light has always been important. In the very beginning of Genesis we read that “ the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep,

while a wind from God[b] swept over the face of the waters. 3 Then God said, “Let there

be light.” Light was God’s priority, for from light all else is possible. As God completed creation, it was the light that sustained it.

Throughout history darkness has fought to overtake light. We have had wars; we have

had evil; we have had sin as Satan continues to try. And,, yes, we all have sinned and have fallen short of that perfect creation of God. Yet, even in the midst of evil and

darkness, the light of God shines through. God sent His Son.

Last month we celebrated our greatest gift – the birth of the Christ child. As we enter the New Year, let us remember to give thanks for that gift … and, like I’ve taught so

many children preparing to receive Communion, after we give thanks for our gift, we are called to share that gift. In Matthew’s Gospel we read, “See, I am sending you out like

sheep into the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.” In this New Year, let us make our first resolution to be the light God intended us to be; to

share the light of the Gospel with those we meet; and to help those who still walk in

darkness.

Lord, give us simplicity of faith, courage to love, and the willingness to hope in all that we do. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but will have the light of life.” John 8:12

In Christ’s Love,

Chaplain Paula
