A New Game Comes to BSGAC

Thanks to the coordination and promotional efforts of Gary and Katharine Knudsen and

Ted and Doris Havens, you can now take part in a fun-filled, Bean Bag Toss competition

every Thursday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the large paved area behind the cart barn.

A weekly sign-up sheet is on the bulletin board. Teams are randomly drawn at the start

of the day’s competition, a ladder is created, and elimination games commence until one

team becomes the winner.

Whether you have played the game before or not, the Bean Bag Toss rules are simple:

Players take turns throwing bags of corn (or bean bags) at a raised platform with a hole in the far end. Two players (one from each team) throw one-way against each other to score points, and their teammates do the same from the other end. A bean bag that goes into the hole on a throw scores 3 points while a bean bag staying on the platform scores 1 point. Play continues until a team reaches or exceeds the score of 21. A “shutout” game ends with an 11 – 0 score.

History of Bean Bag Toss

“It seems that the "Bean Bag Toss Game" origins are unclear. Some say it was invented

in 14th century Germany by a farmer named Matthias Kueperman. Apparently, he saw

some boys throwing some heavy rocks into a hole and thought of making a safer game.

Looking around and seeing the large quantity of corn that was available in "his Bavaria.”

he decided that the new stones would be bags filled with corn weighing one pound. After

some time in which it disappeared, the game appeared again in America. It is believed

that the German immigrants who settled in the U.S. brought the game with them.

Others insist it was a Kentucky farmer in the early 1900s who inspired the game. Either

way, it became popular in pockets of the Midwest. It may have gotten its big break when

far-flung relatives are visiting family, or tailgating at Cincinnati Bengals football games,

saw it in action and helped spread the word around the U.S. Bean bag toss is also very

similar to a game once played by the Native American Blackhawk tribe in Illinois. It then

recently gained popularity in the past century and is also known by the name “cornhole.”

One thing is certain; however, the name 'cornhole' was not used when the game was first

invented. It was only used when this game was 'rediscovered' in America around 2000.”

Bean Bag Terminology The following is a list of terms commonly used in beanbag toss games:

• Ace or Cow Pie: A bag lands on the board, which is worth one point.

• Airmail or Swish: A beanbag that does not slide or bounce but goes directly into the hole.

• Back door or Dirty Rollup: A beanbag that goes over the top of a blocker and into the hole.

• Backstop: A bag that lands past the hole but remains on the board creating a backboard for a slider to knock into without going off the board.[7]

• Blocker: An ace that lands in front of the hole, essentially blocking the hole from sliders.

• Drano: A bag that falls in the hole which is worth three points.

• Cornucopia: Achieved when a player throws all four bags into the hole in one inning.

• Dirty bag: A bag that is on the ground or is hanging off the board touching the ground.

• Grasshopper: A bag that bounces off the grass/ground and lands on the board for a point.

• Screaming Eagle: A bag that goes beyond the board without hitting the board.

• Slippery granny: Scoring three bags in a row on the board only.

• Grand bag, double deuce, four-bagger or four-pack: Four beanbags in the hole by a single player in a single round. There is a tradition in some areas where any player who puts all four bags in the hole on a single turn gets to sign the board, often with some type of ceremony and recognition.

• Trip Dip: When a single player throws 3 out of the 4 bags in the hole in a single round.

• Hanger: An ace on the lip of the hole ready to drop.

• Jumper: A bag that strikes another bag on the board causing it to jump up into the hole.

• Sally: A toss that is thrown too weakly and lands on the ground before reaching the board.

• Shucker: When a player throws a bag and knocks an opposing players bag off the board.

• Skunk, Whitewash or shutout: A game that, by some rules, ends in an 11–0 score.

• Wash: When each team has scored exactly the same number of points in an inning.

match play-man vs. woman), 36 golfers from both leagues signed-up for the fun challenge.

“Let there be Light” on the Outside Patio BSGAC volunteers took on the task of stringing lights on the palm trees surrounding the

outside patio. In order to reach the height required, heavy equipment had to be used.

We are especially grateful and extend “our sincere thanks” to those members who teamed

up to complete the project. The results below show the bright illumination at night. We

know this will provide sufficient event lighting for warm nights both into the future.

Board of Directors Activities The Board of Director’s held a meeting on Friday, January 18th, to provide an update on

the operating performance of the club and plans for the future. There were over 100

members who attended the meeting. It was a good exchange of information with time

provided for Q & A. Then on January 19th, the day following the BOD meeting; the BSGAC

hosted an Open House to provide materials and information to potential members

interested in joining the club.

MEGA Golf - 2019

MEGA (the Men's Executive Golf Association) is kicking off its 2019 season. For those unfamiliar with MEGA, the association is made up of 10 courses: Burnt Store, Del Tura, El Rio, The Landings, Myerlee, Pine Lakes, Sabal Springs, Six Lakes, Seven Lakes, and Whiskey Creek. All the courses are Executive Course style. Each MEGA member course hosts a tournament one-time during the calendar year. There are approximately 90 golfers who participate throughout the year varying in handicap from single digit to about a 35. For each tournament, the golfers are flighted into three groups. Each flight has its own winners which include a CTP hole, skins game, low gross, and low net flight winner. Depending on the number of golfers playing in each flight, pay-outs can be as high as 9 places. All tournaments are Shotgun Starts with coffee and donuts in the morning, and lunch with refreshments. Each course has a Captain who coordinates their players for each month's outing. There is a Championship Round at the end of the year usually played in December. This Championship Round is by invitation only (open only to players who have won during the year). The 2019 MEGA schedule is on the Men’s bulletin board. For further information, please see of contact Walte Clark at [email protected]. The ladies LEGA will host their first 2019 event on April 17th.
