Dear Parents/ Guardians,

Happy New Year!

A new year represents an opportunity to begin anew with freshresolve and new commitments. We make resolutions andproclamations. We make promises to be proactive, and we shareour dreams with friends and families. Something we know from timeand research is that the best way to follow through on acommitment is to identify a rigorous goal and then make an actionplan to achieve it. We begin with the end in mind, and then planbackwards to ensure that we stay on the path to reaching that goal.

As a faculty and as a School Leadership Team, we have designed ourComprehensive Education Plan (CEP) for PS 14 The Fairview Schoolwith big goals and ambitious action plans to achieve them. In short,we plan to:o Improve reading, writing and math performance across allgrades and subject areaso Ensure that all teachers have highly effective teachingpracticeso Collaborate effectively with families to improve studentperformance

Through partnerships with families, teachers, students, andconsultants we know that we can achieve these goals together.

Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful and relaxing break. Our P.S. 14 family wishesyou the very best for 2016! The New Year Is a perfect time to reflect on the past year and setgoals and make plans for the future. As the New Year begins, our students and teachers willcontinue to focus on the Common Core Standards and their own Individual learning goals. Weappreciate the time you take at home to talk about your child's day and your encouragementof them as they complete all their homework and home reading assignments. We are alwayshappy to offer suggestions for additional ways to support your child at home.

The New Year Is a time of new beginnings and to make positive changes. One New Year resolution thatis fun to keep is to resolve to read with your family all yearlong. Make sure that you create a scheduleor a To-Do list by creating a "Lef s Read Together" calendar with your child. Try and develop a routineand a specific time where you will get together with your child and read together for at least 25 minutesevery day. At the end of each week add up the number oiminutes you have read together and rewardyou child with a special activity that they can choose to do with you over the weekend, or by lettingthem stay up late, or taking time off from chores at home. Another resolution you can help your childmake is to have them choose nonfiction literature, which is an important genre that all grade levelsfocus on throughout the entire school year. Nonfiction books prepare children to use reading skills inreal-life situations, as well as boosts knowledge about the world around us. Reading nonfictionmotivates children to read, especially when they choose books based on their interests. Kids love toread about real people, places and events. After they read with you ask them some questions aboutwhat they have just read and the information that they have just learned.

When we Think Win Win everybody can win! Students can problem solve when an issuecomes up with another person. We can think of others and what other people want andnot just what we want for ourselves. We can practice being kind to others and try to thinkof ways to help everyone be happy at home as well as at school. Let's try and createmonthly goals that incorporate this helpful habit!
