Have you made your new year’s resolution yet? A better question would
be, have you fulfilled last year’s resolution.
Helping you achieve your spiritual goals By: Minister Leroy Hargrove Have you ever seen those commercials on
television that advertise the “new and im-
proved” version of a product. Isn’t it funny
how the previous version doesn’t seem to
be good enough anymore. Why is there a
need for a new improved version? Isn’t the
old one still awesome, powerful and able to
do the job?
What about you? Do you need to be im-
proved? Most of us have made that resolu-
tion for the new year. God I want to do
better, I want to read more, I want to pray
more, etc. Well here’s a secret. God is not
looking for a self improvement program
from you. In fact, He tells us not to be anx-
ious for nothing, but by prayer and suppli-
cations we should make our request known
to Him. The interesting thing is that the
bible says that it’s the PEACE of God that
will then keep our hearts and our minds.
Ahhhh, then we will no longer suffer the
resolution blues because we’ve failed to
live up to a promise that we shouldn’t have
made in the first place. This year, just focus
on loving God, fellowship with Him daily,
live the Word and watch those resolutions
and spiritual goals take care of themselves.
SUCCESS WATCH Brother Rickey McNeal is on the way to launching the God Given idea he received from the
Lord. One day, Brother Ricky was helping someone move furniture and other household items
from one house to another. While doing so, he though, “someone needs to invent something
that makes moving much easier”. Well, several months later the favor of God moved and
Brother Rickey’s invention, the Spider Net Extend-a-Hand, is on it’s way to becoming a
reality.

How do you deal with temptation? http://www.barna.org/culture-articles/597-new-years-
resolutions-temptations-and-americas-favorite-sins
When facing a temptation,
remarkably, most Americans
(59%) say they don’t do any-
thing specific to avoid the
tempting situation. As one
demonstration of the chang-
ing values undergirding
temptation, nearly half of
Boomers and Elders say they
try to avoid giving into temp-
tation, but just one-third of
Millennials and two-fifths of
Busters attempt to resist
temptation. However, those
who are practicing
Protestants and practicing
Catholics stand in contrast to
this trend: a majority of both
groups indicate they attempt
to stand up to temptation.
Those who try to avoid
“giving in” implement a vari-
ety of coping mechanisms,
from simply walking away to
recalling Scripture to exer-
cising. The most common
way Americans say they
avoid temptation is to pray
and ask God for strength—
about one in five of those
who resist (18%) say this is
what they usually do to hold
back temptation.
Other common responses
include using reason to
weigh the options (12%),
choosing to just say
“no” (10%), and simply
avoiding or staying away
from the situation altogether
(10%). Most of the ways
people say they resist temp-
tation are fairly individualis-
tic—only 4% of people say
they talk to or call someone
else when they are tempted
and a mere 1% say they seek
the company of others or
attend a meeting. In general,
Americans seem to rely on
their own willpower (through
reasoning, leaving the situa-
tion, thinking about some-
thing else, or focusing on
positive thoughts—about 4%
-5% each) or on a distracting
activity (exercise, work, go-
ing for a walk, listening to
music, going to bed—about
2%-3% each).
BIBLE SOLUTION:
Fighting Temptation
Blessed is the man that endures tempta-tion: for when he is
tried, he shall receive the crown of life,
which the Lord has promised to them
that love him.
James 1:12 KJV
Fresh Starts & New Beginnings Congratulation to both Minister Bernadette Patterson and Sister Brandice Foley. God is al-
ways doing new things that deserves to be heralded. The bible tells us that they overcame him
by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony. These two sisters are able to
testify about the goodness of God and how He has elevated them into new careers. Minister
Bernadette is the Floor Supervisor at Goodwill Industries, while Sister Brandice is the new
Referral Specialist at Superior Health Plan. Congratulations to both!
Small Groups: New for Horizon What’ Upon the Horizon….SMALL GROUPS! Horizon Worship Center is embarking
upon the wonderful challenge of implementing “Small Groups”. While the concept is
not actually new for Horizon (cell groups), the fact that it is launching church wide is.
Try this—the next time you go to a restaurant, order the biggest stake they have. Once
your steak is delivered, pick it up and try to put the ENTIRE thing in your mouth and
eat it. Although there are some huge manly men out there who possibly can pull this off,
most of us can’t. No, the best thing to do is to slice it up into little bite size pieces and
enjoy its succulent flavor. You’ll find that those pieces are not only more personal, they
are also more manageable and digestible, you will find you’ll be able to consume more!
Welcome to small groups. A more in-depth review of small groups will be published in
next month’s issue.
