"Absence of Challenging Candidate" "As per article 13.020.10, 2007 Rotary Manual of Procedures, page 226: The governor shall declare the candi-date of the district nominating commit-tee to be the governor-nominee where no such challenging nomination has been received by the established date. Such declaration shall be made to all clubs in the district within 15 days of the deadline."

DG Mark Starratt would like to announce that District 5360's Nominating Committee has chosen Rtn. Mike French from the Rotary Club of Calgary West to be the District Governor Nominee Designate (2011/12). Spe-cial thanks to Nominating Committee Chair PDG Steve Rickard for his diligence in ensuring the fairness and completeness of this task. Notwithstanding this choice, As per article 13.020.8, 2007 Rotary Manual of Proce-dures, page 225: Any club in the District which has been in existence for at least one year as of the beginning of that year may also propose a challenging candidate for governor-nominee. A club in existence for less than one year as of the beginning of that year may propose a challenging candidate provided such candidate is a member of that club. The challenging candidate must have been duly suggested to the nominating committee. The name of the challenging candidate shall be sub-mitted pursuant to a resolution by the club adopted at a regular meeting. The club must file the resolu-tion with the governor by the date determined by the governor. Such date shall be at least two weeks after publication of the announcement of the selection for governor-nominee by the nominating committee

Therefore, should any club wish to mount a challenge, it should be received by DG Mark by February 15, 2009.

Mike accepted an invitation to join the Rotary Club of Calgary West in 1986 where he has served as Club President (2006-2007), Club Treasurer and served on, chaired and/or been a Director for every avenue of service in Rotary. He is currently

serving his second term as Club Treasurer. Mike was Chair of the District Micro-credit committee, (2005-2006) raising $250,000 with 46 of the then 47 clubs participat-ing. He sat on the District Incor-poration committee, the District Finance committee and assisted with the promotion of District wide insurance. He currently serves as a Director on the Dis-trict Board, where he is Chair of the District Audit and Finance committee, as well as an Assis-tant Governor serving 5 clubs. He was also volunteer coordina-

tor and vice chair for RYLA 2008 and is currently a facilitator on the District Strategic planning team. In 2006 Mike led a successful District wide International field trip to the Dominican Republic to review various Rotary pro-jects including Micro-credit, Bio-Sand water filers, LED Lights, Latrines, a special school and a reforestation devel-opment. Mike is a major donor to the Rotary Foundation and sees both the Rotary Foundation and the Calgary Rotary Clubs Foundation as important instruments to help those in need both locally and around the world. In addition to his involvement with Rotary he is also on the Board of Governors of Opportunity International, and sup-ports various other charities including Rotary Challenger Park, SA Nepal and Christmas Future, to name a few. Mike is looking forward to working with all Rotarians to assist them in achieving their goals at the club level, which he be-lieves will in turn build stronger clubs and a stronger and more successful Rotary International organization worldwide.

On September 6th our team flew to Scotland for the start of a month long exchange with District 1230. The team consisted of team leader Robin Hood from the Lethbridge Rotary Club and team members Ryan Jillard, Sarah Burton, Leah Dawonik and Wayne Gibson. The team members were sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Rocky Mountain House, Lethbridge East, Olds, and Kin-dersley, SK respectively . We were welcomed warmly at the Glasgow airport by DG Catherine Stewart and some of her District Executive. For the next month we en-joyed some tremendous hospitality from the host Rotary clubs: Strathaven, Lochilphead, Strathendrick, Prestwick, East Kilbride, Stranraer and Gryffe Valley. Our month ended with the District Convention in Perth which inter-estingly is not in District 1230. During the month our hosts arranged for numerous cultural tours in their area including castles, museums, art galleries, concerts, old churches, the Parliament buildings and of course some distilleries. Included in the tour of the Parliament buildings was a 30 minute meeting with the Minister of Culture and then sitting in on question period as her guest. We had some wonderful day trips to Glasgow, Edinburg, the Isle of Arran and many other sites including a day in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Each club arranged for a vocational day and our team members had the opportunity to learn how their voca-tion was done in Scotland, exchange ideas and network. The GSE is an educational program and the voca-tional days are a key focus. It should be mentioned that in addition to day trips, vocational days, and cultural days most evenings were filled with social events such as dinner parties, cocktail parties and entertainment. A very full month! We presented a power point presentation at the meetings of each of our host clubs and a final presentation at the District Conference in Perth where we made DG Catherine a member of Team Canada with the pres-entation of a team Canada hockey jersey. The team members did an excellent job of profiling their sponsor-ing clubs and their communities in the presentations.

Kindersley Rotary Club January 28 - February 5, 2009 5 Rotarians and 4 community members are going to the San Jan Cosala orphanage in Guadalajara Mexico. We will be installing a sink, solar water heaters for the dorm and painting (including work on a mural). Work crews will help with construction as well as working in the classroom and providing school photos for the children. Contact: Kathy Friesen [email protected] Note: Story to follow upon their return.

Dr. Wayne Dyer is affectionately called "The father of motivation" by his fans. Here is your opportunity to hear in person this world famous speaker! By using the ticket master code (Rotary09) you will be supporting the MEDIC Canada Micocredit program. Please refer to the attachment regarding your choice of ticket price. Thank you for your support. Robin Knudsen, President Rotary Club of Olds

RC Olds is doing a second $50,000 Joint Micro Credit Project in Ghana with MEDIC Canada. Last year's $50,000 program issued $122,000 of credit and 360 loans that affected over 3 people for every loan. The social impact is incredible, especially when we have at least 85% women and a payback of 98% plus. The money is still there . Micro Credit directly relates to education which is the biggest factor in reducing Child Mortality under 5 years of age. Robin Knudsen, Olds

Polio Plus Campaign Since the campaign started 1 year ago we have raised in excess of $142,000 including $54,000+ from the Walk to Beat Polio campaign spearheaded by Hans and Lolita Weisner. Every club had pledged to give $1000/yr for 3 years to the Polio Plus Campaign AND we have MET THE ENTIRE 3 YEAR CHALLENGE IN ONE YEAR. This number will continue to grow as there are many clubs that have activities planned and have committed contributions over the next two Rotary years.

Historically, our District is negative on Dec 31 due to a deficit from members having left on July 1. This year we have achieved a positive net new membership. With President DK’s visit in February, we are poised to meet our Membership Goal. Here are the statistics for the District 07/01/08 Start Value 2163 12/31/08 Ending Value 2193 +30 NET NEW MEMBERS Goal from Club Presidents +225 Congratulations to the following clubs for achieving positive net membership growth in the first 6 months of this Rotary year: (in no particular order) Brooks Calgary South Red Deer East Calgary Chinook Calgary East Calgary Centennial Okotoks Calgary Fish Creek Canmore Cardston Calgary Sarcee Calgary Crowchild Innisfail Medicine Hat Sunrise-Pincher Creek Lacombe Lethbridge East Red Deer Sunrise Medicine Hat Red Deer Centennial Olds Medicine Hat Saamis If you believe you should be on the list and are not, it is because your numbers are not updated with RI/District.

District Membership

Some clubs are historically "late" in activating / report-ing their new members to RI. As a result: 1. Real numbers are not reflected. District 5360 has a challenging but realistic membership goal to meet, it is vital that at this 1/2 way point new members are accu-rately reported. 2. If the numbers are not reported to RI, these new members do not receive the monthly Rotarian Maga-zine and will consequently miss out on the "International" flavor of Rotary for a number of months. Please report new members within two weeks of induction to both the District and Rotary International. Contact the District Membership Committee for tips on membership growth and retention. Visit the District website at www.clubrunner.ca/5360 to obtain contact information.

Congratulations to the TOP 3 Clubs as of Dec 31: Rocky Mountain House +8 Red Deer Sunrise +7 Olds +6 With honorable mention and within striking distance with +5: Calgary Chinook Medicine Hat (Saamis) Calgary Crowchild Rocky Mountain House Calgary Heritage Park
