Mark your calendars and Save The Date for…..
The Third Annual
Forest Creek Neighborhood Watch
Spring Carnival
Sparkling Straw-
berry Kiwi Sangria
1 lb strawberries
1 lb kiwis
1 cup light rum
1 bottle white wine (such assauvignon blanc)
1 bottle sparkling wine, chilled
(such as cava)
1 cup sugar
1 cup water
3 oranges
A pitcher or other large con-
tainer
Directions:Hull the strawberries and cut
them in half. Peel the kiwis and
cut them into slices.
Combine half of the halved
strawberries, the sugar, and the
water in a saucepan, and turn the
heat up to medium. Bring the
mixture to a boil and then let
simmer, stirring occasionally,
for 10 minutes or until the straw-
berries seem like they’re about
to fall apart. Let cool for a few
minutes, and then, using a meshsieve, strain the strawberry
goodness into a bowl. Use a
spoon to press them up against
the mesh so you get every last
beautiful drop of strawberry
syrup. Place the syrup in the re-
frigerator to cool a bit.
Combine the kiwi slices and the
remaining strawberries in a
pitcher, and add the rum, white
wine, strawberry syrup, and the
juice of three oranges (in a
pinch, you could also sub a few
splashes of bottled orange juice,
or even lemonade, for the fresh
orange juice). Give it all a good
stir and then pop the pitcher in
the refrigerator for at least four
hours to let all of the flavors
come together.
When you’re ready to serve, add
around three-quarters of the
chilled sparkling wine to the
pitcher. Pour into glasses and
spoon in fruit, topping off each
glass with a bit of the remaining
champagne so it’s nice and bub-
bly when you hand the glass to a
friend.

Announcements, Accomplishments, and Accolades
UNT logistics students Mary Catherine Schoals, Laura Catalina Quinones Rios, Dylan
Smith and Jacob Koren defeated the two-time defending champions to clinch the top prize
at the 2016 Operation Stimulus Case Competition. Photo courtesy of UNT.
UNT logistics continues winning streak, beats defending champs at
third North American case contest!
“There is no room for error in this competition,” said Ila Manuj, assistant professor of logistics and faculty
advisor for the Logistics Student Association at UNT. “This is a major competition with quite a few big-
name schools and esteemed professors. The students that compete come from all over the U.S. and Can-
ada.”
The UNT team – Jacob Koren of Lewisville, Texas; Mary Catherine Schoals of Flower
Mound, Texas; Dylan Smith of Round Rock, Texas; and Laura Catalina Quinones Rios ofMedellin, Colombia – defeated 15 teams from major logistics schools, including the two-
time defending champions from Dalhousie University in Canada.
The win is a first for UNT, and it is also the first time UNT students have won three of the major case com-
petitions for logistics and supply chain undergraduates during a calendar year. UNT students clinched the
top prize at the Intermodal Association of North America – University of North Florida Case Competition
last May. Additionally, this September, UNT students won the Intermodal EXPO Academic Challenge for
the third consecutive year. You Make Forest Creek Proud Dylan Smith!

The liver, weighing in at about 3 pounds in
healthy adults, is one of the body’s vital or-
gans. It is responsible for many important
functions related to
digestion, metabolism,
immunity and the
storage of nutrients
that the body needs to
survive. Moreover, the liver is a gland
that secretes chemicals required by other
parts of the body. In fact, the liver is theonly part of your body that is both an organ
and a gland.
A healthy liver regulates the composition of
blood, removes harmful toxins from the
blood as well as processes and converts
nutrients absorbed by the intestines during
digestion into forms
that the body can use.
It also stores some
vitamins, iron and
simple sugar glucose.
It is also responsible for breaking down in-
sulin, hemoglobin and other hormones. In
addition, it destroys old red blood cells and produces chemicals needed for blood to clot
properly.

Continued from last page…..
Because the liver performs so many
vital functions, it is important to keep it
healthy. An unhealthy diet and poor
lifestyle can overwork and overload
the liver, leaving it unable to process
toxins and fat efficiently.
This in turn can raise the risk of obe-
sity, cardiovascular disease, chronic
fatigue, headaches, digestive problems,
allergies and many other health prob-
lems.
Eating the foods in the chart on the left
on a regular basis can help cleanse, re-
juvenate and detoxify your liver. This
will help keep your liver healthy and
functioning the way you need it to.

The Real Estate Section ….continued
Austin real estate is
already hot, and
things are only
getting hotter.
According to the Realtor.com
2016 Housing Forecast released
Wednesday, 2016 will yield
impressive growth for the local
market.
"In 2016, we expect single-
family home sales in the
[Austin-Round Rock area] to
increase by 10 percent com-
pared to 2015. Median single-
family home prices are ex-
pected to increase by 5 per-cent," reads the report.
Millennials are predicted to
be among the top buyers, and
Realtor.com says Austin-Round
Rock will be the fifth most
sought out city for 25- to 34-
year-olds looking to purchase a
home.
The report attributes the ex- pected sales growth, in part, to
Austin's growing population.
Compared to 2012, the local
labor force and the number of
households will have increased by 12 percent by 2016. Other
factors include a stronger econ-
omy and a lower unemploy-
ment rate, which has decreased
by 36 percent in the same time
These factors resort in intense
competition for housing. Austin

kahuna: kitchens. Here aresix home improvement
projects in this all-important
room that experts say come
with significant financial
benefits down the road.
Cha-ching!
Amped-up appliances
Call it a need for eye candy, but
shiny new appliances — fridge,
stove, stainless-steel dish-
washer — have a huge impact on
prospective home buyers, ac-
cording to Realtor® Al Cannis-
tra.
High-end appliances are also
typically the most expensive
renovation, usually with an
equally high ROI. Cannis-
tra mentions one home
with outdated appliances that sat
on the market unsold; once the
owners updated everything,
“they received two offers the
first week” and the house sold at
“significantly higher than ask-
ing.”

But don’t feel like you have to
replace appliances at once.
Just swap out what you can —
when you can — so by the time
your home’s on the market the
overall buyer impression is
“Hey, nice kitchen!” rather than
“The ’70s sure were a crazy
time, eh?”
One caveat: “Keep the appli-
ances and plumbing where they
are,” suggests Justin
Riordan, founder of Spade and
Archer Design Agency,
“because the rule of thumb is to
add $5,000 each time you relo-
cate either.”
Refreshed cabinets
After appliances, cabinets are
the most expensive item on
a kitchen upgrade checklist,
averaging between $3,900 and
$12,000. So don’t leap into
trashing the old ones.
“If you have existing wood
cabinets that are still in de-
cent shape, instead of com- pletely refacing them, give
them a fresh coat of paint,”
says Tracy Kay Grif-
fin, designer for HGTV’s “Get
It Sold.” Rust-Oleum makes an
easy-to-use Cabinet Transfor-
mation kit.
Another small remodeling
project with instant impact:
replacing the cabinet hardware.“Choose a satin or brushed
finish so they don’t show
fingerprints,” says Erin Davis,
lead designer and co-owner
of Mosaik Design & Remodel-
ing in Portland, OR.

New countertopsA new countertop may be pricey, but Realtorsagree that the impact onfuture home buyers ishuge. And don’t just
take it for granted thatyou should go for gran-ite; the NKBA re- port shows that quartzcountertops have morecachet these days.
Also remember that replacing acountertop “provides an oppor-tunity to install a new glass orsubway backsplash for addi-tional punch,” says Davis. “A
budget-friendly option is to in-stall a 4-inch-high splash out ofthe same countertop material.”
Kitchen sink
Given the sink is the mostused item in your kitchen, a brand-new one will pop — even if it’s on an old counter-
top. So consider installingone with two troughs ormade of stainless steel, themost popular material, ac-cording to Consumer Re- ports. For the truly budget-friendly op-tion, get a fancy new faucet, sug-gests Griffin: “This is quick andinexpensive but can make a hugedifference.”

Save money by making Homemade Chicken Broth!
Ingredients
1 3- to 4-pound organic stewing hen, 1-2 organic
chicken carcasses, or 3-4 pounds of organic chicken
necks, backs and wings
4 quarts filtered water
2-4 organic chicken feet (optional)
1-2 organic chicken heads (optional)
2 tablespoons organic apple cider vinegar
3 organic celery stalks, coarsely chopped
2 organic carrots, coarsely chopped
1 organic onion, quartered
Handful of fresh parsley
Sea salt
Method:
Put the chicken or carcasses in a pot with 4
quarts of water; add the chicken feet and heads (if
you’re using them) and the vinegar.
Let sit for 30 minutes to give the vinegar time to
leach the minerals out of the bones.
Add the vegetables and turn on the heat.
Bring to a boil and skim the scum.
Reduce to barely a simmer, cover, and cook for 6
to 24 hours.
During the last 10 minutes of cooking, throw in a
handful of fresh parsley for added flavor and miner-
als.
Let the broth cool, strain it, and take any remain-
ing meat off the bones to use in future cooking.
Add sea salt to taste and drink the broth as is or
store it in the fridge (up to 5 to 7 days), or freezer (up
to 6 months) for use in soups and stews.

Lake Forest and ForestCreek III HOA’s are invited
to join us for the 2016 sea-
son. This year the swim
season will start on May
9th and finish with the

uled for July 9th
and 10th
.

quirements, practice infor-
mation and our events cal-

March 5th - Swim Evalua-
tions - New and Returning
Swimmers may reserve a
time using the Signup
Genius link on our website.
It is important that all re-
turning tadpoles, returning
pollywogs and interested
new swimmers under the
age of 12 sign up for aswim evaluation.
Attending a swim evalua-
tion does not guarantee
swimmers a spot on the
team. Our first concern is
the safety our swimmers,
as such participants mustmeet minimum skill
requirements as defined
by our coaches.
After returning families,
registration priority is given
to new applicants from the
Lake Forest, Forest Creek
and Forest Creek III
neighborhoods.
Every season there is the
potential that interest will
exceed the maximum num-
ber of swimmers we cansafely put in the pool.
New families from outside
the three listed HOA's will
be registered on a case-by-
case basis.

PARENTS PAGES brought to you by The Forest Creek Young ExplorersWhere Everyday is an Adventure and Every Child A Treasure!!
Encouraging
good behavior:
15 tips
Try these tips to encourage the
behavior you want in your chil-
dren.1.Children do as you do. Your
child watches you to get clues on
how to behave in the world.
You’re her role model, so use
your own behavior to guide her.
What you do is often much more
important than what you say. If
you want your child to say
‘please’, say it yourself. If youdon’t want your child to raise
her voice, speak quietly and gen-
tly yourself.
2. Show your child how you
feel. Tell him honestly how his
behavior affects you. This will
help him see his/her own feel-
ings in yours, like a mirror. Thisis called empathy. By the age of
three, children can show real
empathy. So you might say, ‘I’m
getting upset because there is so
much noise I can’t talk on the
phone’. When you start the sen-
tence with ‘I’, it gives your child
the chance to see things from
your perspective.
3. Catch her being ‘good’. This
simply means that when yourchild is behaving in a way you
like, you can give her some posi-
tive feedback. For example,
‘Wow, you are playing so
nicely. I really like the way you
are keeping all the blocks on the
table’. This works better than
waiting for the blocks to come
crashing to the floor before you
take notice and bark, ‘Hey, stop
that’. This positive feedback is
sometimes called ‘descriptive
praise’. Try to say six positive
comments (praise and encour-
agement) for every negative
comment (criticisms and repri-
mands). The 6-1 ratio keeps
things in balance. Remember
that if children have a choice
only between no attention or
negative attention, they will seek
out negative attention.
4. Get down to your child’s
level. Kneeling or squatting
down next to children is a very
powerful tool for communicat-
ing positively with them. Getting
close allows you to tune in to
what they might be feeling or
thinking. It also helps them fo-
cus on what you are saying or
asking for. If you are close to
your child and have his atten-
tion, there is no need to make
him look at you.
5. ‘I hear you.’ Active listening
is another tool for helping young
children cope with their emo-
tions. They tend to get frustrated
a lot, especially if they
can’t express themselves well
enough verbally. When you re-
peat back to them what you
think they might be feeling, it
helps to relieve some of their
tension. It also makes them feel
respected and comforted. It can
diffuse many potential temper
tantrums.
6. Keep promises. Stick to
agreements. When you follow
through on your promises, good
or bad, your child learns to trust
and respect you. So when you
promise to go for a walk after
she picks up her toys, make sure
you have your walking shoes
handy. When you say you will
leave the library if she doesn’t
stop running around, be prepared
to leave straight away. No need
to make a fuss about it – the
more matter of fact, the better.
This helps your child feel more
secure, because it creates a con-
sistent and predictable environ-
ment.

7. Reduce temptation. Your
glasses look like so much fun to
play with – it’s hard for children
to remember not to touch. Re-
duce the chance for innocent but
costly exploration by keeping
that stuff out of sight
8. Choose your battles. Before
you get involved in anything
your child is doing – especially
to say ‘no’ or ‘stop’ – ask your-
self if it really matters. By keep-
ing instructions, requests and
negative feedback to a mini-
mum, you create less opportu
nity for conflict and bad feel-
ings. Rules are important, but
use them only when it’s really
important.
9. Whining: be strong. Kids
don’t want to be annoying. By
giving in when they’re whining
for something, we train them to
do it more – even if we don’t
mean to. ‘No’ means ‘no’, not
maybe, so don’t say it unless
you mean it. If you say ‘no’ and
then give in, children will whine
even more the next time, hopingto get lucky again.
10. Keep it simple and posi-
tive. If you can give clear in-
structions in simple terms, your
child will know what is ex-
pected of him. (‘Please hold my
hand when we cross the
road.’) Stating things in a posi-
tive way gets their heads think-
ing in the right direction. For
example, ‘Please shut the gate’
is better than ‘Don't leave the
gate open’.

Pop Quiz: Do You Have to Pro-
vide Your Child’s Social Security
Number on School Enrollment
Forms?
by Elaine Rigoli
This recent editorial cartoon in The New Yorker puta face on how simple it is for hackers to succeed at
stealing sensitive information online. It happens as easily to adults as it does to kids. Nearly 400,000 kids get their identities stolen eachyear, according to the Federal Trade Commission. In fact, federal authorities have warned about peo-
ple with bad credit buying “credit profile numbers”or CPNs from businesses that use computers to lo-cate and sell Social Security numbers issued tochildren.Identity thieves steal kids’ Social Security numbers because their credit is generally untarnished. It’snot until years later — when they apply for a storecredit card, a college loan, or a job — that they find
out their credit has been destroyed.Just think of all the personal details you provide toyour child’s school before enrollment: name, dateof birth, Social Security number, home address, parents’ names, phone numbers, emails, and otherhighly sensitive personal information. That information is also all that is needed to stealyour child’s identity — but especially the SocialSecurity number.Of course, most parents expect that a student’s re-cord is private and won’t be stolen. Surely that sort
of file is kept under lock-and-key in some old-fashioned, dusty file drawer in the back of the prin-cipal’s office, right? Turns out, that’s wrong. Your child’s sensitive per-sonal information is not safe or secure. It’s enteredinto a district-wide database that can be accessed by anyone with permission. And in many cases, hackers have accessed the information as well. So, do you actually have to give your child’s SocialSecurity number to enroll him or her in a publicschool?
The surprising answer is “no” – thanks to a federallaw stating that students are not required to providetheir Social Security numbers to schools in order to
prove citizenship.

11. Responsibility and conse-
quences. As children get older,
you can give them more respon-
sibility for their own behavior.
You can also give them the
chance to experience the naturalconsequences of that behavior.
You don’t have to be the bad
guy all the time. For example, if
your child forgot to put her
lunch box in her bag, she will go
hungry at lunch time. It is her
hunger and her consequence. It
won’t hurt her to go hungry just
that one time. Sometimes, withthe best intentions, we do so
much for our children that we
don’t allow them to learn for
themselves. At other times you
need to provide consequences
for unacceptable or dangerous
behavior. For these times, it is
best to ensure that you have ex-
plained the consequences and
that your children have agreed to
them in advance.
12. Say it once and move on. It
is surprising how much your
child is listening even though he
might not have the social matur-
ity to tell you. Nagging and criti-
cizing is boring for you and
doesn’t work. Your child will
just end up tuning you out and
wonder why you get more upset.
If you want to give him one last
chance to cooperate, remind him
of the consequences for not co-
operating. Then start counting to
three.
13. Make your child feel im-
portant. Children love it when
they can contribute to the family.
Start introducing some simple
chores or things that she can do
to play her own important part in
helping the household. This will
make her feel important and
she’ll take pride in helping out.
If you can give your child lots of
practice doing a chore, she will
get better at it and will keep try-
ing harder. Safe chores help chil-
dren feel responsible, build
their self-esteem and help you
out too.
14. Prepare for challenging
situations. There are times when
looking after your child and do-
ing things you need to do will be
tricky. If you think about these
challenging situations in ad-
vance, you can plan around your
child’s needs. Give him a five-
minute warning before you need
him to change activities. Talk to
him about why you need his co-
operation. Then he is prepared
for what you expect.
15. Maintain a sense of humor.
Another way of diffusing tension
and possible conflict is to use
humor and fun. You can pretend
to become the menacing tickle
monster or make animal noises.
But humor at your child’s ex-
pense won't help. Young chil-
dren are easily hurt by parental
‘teasing’. Humor that has you
both laughing is great.
