George Mortimer Pullman arrives in England, for his first ever visit to attend The Midland Railway Shareholders Meeting at Derby. (Source; PCS-Archive).

February 18th. The Midland Railway Shareholders Meeting, Derby. G.M.Pullman attends the meeting as an invited guest of

Sir James Allport (1853 appointed to the general managership of the Midland Railway; an office which he held continuously, with the exception of a few years between 1857 and 1860, when he was managing director to Palmers Shipbuilding and Iron Co at Jarrow, until his retirement in 1880, when he became a director). Sir James Allport had visited the United States of America in 1872, during which he encountered his first Pullman car. At the shareholders meeting, G.M.Pullman spoke and gave details of his “At own risk” the building, shipment and construction in Derby of the first Pullman cars in England. All he wished was to charge a “Pullman Supplement” on top of the normal train journey fare. The outcome was the signing of a 15-year contract between Pullman and the Midland Railway. As ever my thanks to Tommy Knox for the following information on steam hauled Pullman services on the East Coast Main Line. Within the text reference is made to ‘Up’ and ‘Dn’ workings. These relate thus, an ‘Up’ working is a service to London Kings Cross, and ‘Dn’ is a ‘Down’ working from Kings Cross. I.e. All lines to any of London’s terminals are classified as the ‘UP Line’. Pullman Cars - North Main Street - Las Vegas. Further to my article with edition No.11 March-April 2013 Pages 17 to 25, that covered in detail the three cars that I photographed on one of my visits to Las Vegas.

©T.Bye.

Left to Right - Colorado Midland Office No. 100 & Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad No.92. My thanks to Terence Mulligan for advising of the following link to ‘You Tube’ with regard to the American television series ‘Pawn Stars’ and the disposal of the two cars as per the photograph above.

With no public access to view the cars interiors, ‘Pawn Stars’ gained access as part of the filming. The filming will have been undertaken pre-January 2017. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzfWuAF2HDE&feature=youtu.be Further to the ‘Pawn Stars’ filming, the following was made public in January 2017. We’ve learned exclusively that before the trains were taken to Ely, they served as a location for an upcoming episode of “Pawn Stars.” Derek Stevens will presumably be shown haggling over the train cars with experts from the Las Vegas-based reality show. The announcement the classic train cars were for sale set off a bidding war. Bob Snow showed interest in the cars, and the town of Caliente, Nevada was also in the running for possession of the rolling pieces of Americana. Some bidders were deterred by the cost of transporting the cars, estimated to be about $100,000. Ultimately, the cars were sold to a waste and recycling firm, Western Elite. The company is expected to feature the vintage train cars in its annual Christmas Express (also called the Western Elite Polar Express). Christmas Express is a community outreach event where guests ride train cars towed by diesel trucks. You know, the rural version of a thrill ride.

So, while it’s sad to see the train cars go, there’s some consolation in the fact they’ll be back in action and enjoyed by families in Ely. Yes, we asked how much the train cars sold for, but the answer isn’t straightforward. It wasn’t a completely cash transaction. The deal included trade for waste disposal services, which makes sense given the fact the Stevens brothers will be in construction mode on their new resort, currently called 18 Fremont (formerly the Las Vegas Club). No deal could be struck, hence the sale to the company in Ely. We’ve been asked how the nearby casino can be called Main Street Station if there are no longer trains involved. Well, there are two train cars at Main Street Station, the Louisa May Alcott Pullman car and another called Orlando Dawn.

Pullman Profile No.5 - The Golden Arrow and Ocean Liner Express Pullmans - Antony M Ford.

This is the latest volume in Antony Ford’s acclaimed ‘Pullman Profile’ series. Recognised as the standard work on the Pullman cars operated on Britain’s railway in the 20th century, this latest volume considers the cars that made up the formations of two of the Southern Railway/Region’s prestige services. Individual car histories, interior and exterior views, plans and train make-up details all feature, as do photographs of the complete trains and the clientele of the period.

January 2018. The Carriage and Wagon Department continue on the major overhaul of Car 54 at Horsted Keynes, with the underframe having been grit blasted using the new portable machine, and subsequently painted in red oxide. Previously an outside company ‘Sussex Blast Cleaning’ of Hailsham has been used, such as for the SECR Birdcage Brake, but obviously being able to do this in-house means it can be done to suit the overhaul programme schedule, and also is cheaper. In the meantime, the lifted body has continued to receive attention to the underside of the floor with Xtratherm insulation boards being fitted followed by planking. Timber to replace the rotted bottom end rails has been obtained and fitted, which is similar to work that has already been done on some of the early four-wheeler carriages, the main drawback being that one cannot obtain this Utile wood in long sections unlike the mahogany or teak available many years ago. On November 30th, there was a big event at Horsted Keynes, when the first of the carriages to be shunted into the new OP4 storage shed took place attended by official of the Bluebell, C & W volunteers and many of those who had contributed to the £350,000 cost of the new building. John Knight, the Project Leader for the Car 54 overhaul, took the opportunity to set out a display of items such as luggage racks and other fittings and updated those present on the latest progress. This was a useful exercise as this part of the new OP4 shed is not normally open to the public, and therefore Car 54 is not on view except for the occasional C & W Works tours on Special Event Days.

Looking at the plans for Doris. 5BEL Trustee Mike Hart stands inside first class Car Doris looking at the interior plan. Behind him is a refurbished marquetry panel and all around him are the basic wooden fitments to which the beautiful panelling will be affixed. This car has made massive advances in such a short time, from being reduced to a shell at the start of the year. It has had major work on the steelwork after the extraction of asbestos, and now it is coming together rapidly with the final stages of interior fit being undertaken.

Wall light. Special wall lights were designed and executed in 1932 specially for Brighton Belle. This is a reconstruction placed in position, so the Trustees could see it. The metalwork has been replated to give a clean nickel finish. The original lamp glasses have been replicated in the original sunbeam pattern and the bulbs are not filament high-energy using bulbs. Instead they are new LED bulbs, designed to offer ambient light indistinguishable from and old filament bulb, but using a tiny fraction of the energy. In total the reduction in lighting energy has allowed real relief for the electric motor generator sets on the train.

Examining coffee pot logo. 5 BEL Trust Chairman Denis Dunstone looks on in approval at the parquetry design in Motor Car No.91. Much energy, time and expense has gone into recreating to perfection the original 1930s Art Deco designs. His smile indicates the superb quality that has been achieved. The Trust is determined that this train will be restored and will operate to the highest standard. Car No.91 is now having the final details of its interior reconstruction completed, and then the seating will begin to follow.

Blue LED and tulip shade. In the roof, lamp sockets held miniature globe bulbs in very railway-like poses. Pullman designed and fitted ground-glass tulip-style shades, which we have managed to have manufactured new, as well as using stocks already available. Watchful for the recreation of the original effect, one of the ‘bluer’ LED miniature globe bulbs is being tested here in the roof-light strip along the saloon of Car No.91. The effect is good, but these bulbs will probably populate the corridor and vestibule spaces. It is worth going to the trouble to get this right - it all adds to the authentic Pullman atmosphere that we are able to recreate with this careful Art Deco reconstruction. http://brightonbelle.com/

30-420 - REVISED TOOLING - WESTERN PULLMAN 6-Car DEMU - DCC with Sound.

Metropolitan Cammell (Birmingham) built 2, 6-car Pullman Diesel Multiple Units between 1959 and 1960. The two 6-car units worked between London St. Pancras and Manchester on the Blue Pullman service. Following electrification of the West Coast Main Line, Pullman services between London and Manchester transferred to the new electric railway for which new coaches were built. The two units were transferred to the Western Region in 1966 where they worked alongside 3, 8-car units. The former Midland Region units were fitted with cables on the cab front to enable the two units to be coupled together and they received a revised BR livery adopted for Pullman services of grey and blue (reversed corporate livery). All units were withdrawn in May 1973. We have revised our existing Pullman tooling to allow the later Western Region version of the 6-car former Blue Pullman unit to be modelled, as working on the Western Region of British Rail (1966 to 1973). Fully detailed cab and passenger interiors. Accessory pack includes full buffer-beam detail and semi-permanent close couplings. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SNCF Pullman Express at St Pancras International, London for the film launch of Murder on The Orient Express on Thursday November 2nd, 2017.

Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits cars operated within the United Kingdom from the night of October 5th, 1936 with the “Night Ferry” sleeper service until withdrawn October 31st, 1980. The exception to a continuous operation being due to the Second World War 1939 to 1945, the service recommenced in late 1947. November 1st, 2017, being thirty-seven years and one day since the final departure of the “Night Ferry”, six Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits cars of the SNCF Pullman Express travelled from France to the United Kingdom through the Channel Tunnel. The train formation consisting of the six cars and fourgon were hauled by a GBRF Class 92 locomotive from Calais Fréthun to Dollands Moor. At Dollands Moor the formation awaited on movement via HS1 to St Pancras International. The motive power allocated being two Eurotunnel Krupp diesel locomotives No.0004 and 0003 which topped and tailed the formation, departing Dollands Moor at 23.00 for St Pancras International.

In Response: Thankyou Terence for your contributions over the years, I very much appreciate and always look forward to receiving your photographs and articles. It is really down to the contributors like your good self that make every newsletter possible. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Douglas Lindsay. Subject: Pullman & CIWL Newsletter No.39 - November & December 2017. Excellent latest edition of the newsletter!!! Wow what a lot of news! From: John Griffin. Subject: Pullman & CIWL Newsletter No.39 - November & December 2017. Thank you for the work you do in the preparation and sending of the Pullman information. My wife and her father both worked on Pullmans. In Response: Thankyou John, you are indeed in a unique position, with family members working on Pullman services. It is a shame that the Pullman staff memories of daily operations have not been recorded for posterity. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Greg Martin. Subject: 1879 “Engineering” magazine page 226. “Pullman Cars. – President Pullman has sent an order to the Pullman Palace car Company’s shops’ at Detroit. For the construction of eight palace sleeping cars, to embody all the latest improvements. Four of these will be used upon the Great Northern Railway, England, and four upon the New York, Lake Erie, and Western Railroad. The cars will cost 14,000 dols., or 2800ʅ. each.” In Response: I have researched the matter, and can only identify two cars not four. Prior to 1879, the last car to be built was ‘GLOBE’ in 1878. This was followed in 1880 with two sleeping cars ‘COLUMBIA’ & ‘IONA’ for the GNR. The next car to be built was in 1883, ‘ST.ANDREW’ a sleeper. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: N.Lade.
