The Work of a Thespian By Em Richards

The work of a GCHS thespian does not end when the bell rings at 3:15, nor when the

lights dim in the gymnasium after a night’s game. The work of a thespian, like most

groups, requires diligent practice and dedication. Their scheduled “work day” contin-

ues until the late hour of 10 pm, when most other teens are relaxing at home or hang-

ing out with friends.

Rehearsal usually goes the same way, at around 6:45pm, the cast of about 50 filters

into the auditorium, laughing and talking with their respective friend groups, and once

the clock ticks to 7, a shout from Mr. Humphrey, Mr. Green, or Mrs. O’Black signals

the true beginning of rehearsal. We all dash to the stage, typically after a quick pep

talk from said director, we move to places for our first scene and for 3 straight hours

the stage becomes a flurry of dancing, singing, and most of all acting.

After we finish our rehearsal, Mr. Humphrey sits us down in a circle of exhaustion

and sweat. The is just the end of one of many nights to come, where we will receive

“notes,” where he reviews our highs & lows of that night and critiques our work. It is

a perfect ending, receiving feedback on what we did well, but mostly what we must

work on before opening night. After notes, we leave for the night, only to come and

do it all over again tomorrow. So, you could say the work of a thespian is

never done. I would argue that it isn’t work if you love it…. And the Greeley

Central thespians certainly do.

Em is an Acting emphasis AMP student that frequents the stage in plays and musicals,

this spring you can watch her in action as the Grandma in The Wedding Singer!

Thank you to the UNCO students from the Clay Club and Mike

Lemke head of the ceramic department. This fall UNC ceramic

students invited our GCHS students to participate in a free 4

week clay workshop held on Saturdays . This was a fantastic

opportunity for our students to learn from these college stu-

dents and work in the UNC studio. We are grateful for the part-

nership and friendship that the UNC has offered us. This type

of work plants a vision of a future after high school. As I over

heard one of our seniors say as they were watching some of the

college kids at work on the wheel "hey this is going to be us

someday."

We also would like to thank Donna Goodsell with the School

of Natural Therapy downtown on 8th avenue for their continue

support of visual artists as they provide space in their reception

room to showcase our GCHS students art work for the First

Friday events downtown Greeley The opportunity for our visu-

al artist to have their work displayed in a professional man-

ner out in the community is fantastic.

Keep watch for information coming in Feb. for

the first District 6 Art Walk scheduled for March

in celebration of YOUTH ART MONTH!

This fall students in AP Art

History and AP Studio took a

trip to the Denver art museum

to take in the fine art this muse-

um offers and thanks to AMP

they also saw the special exhibit

from American artist Andrew

and James Wyatt. Students can

see all the regular exhibits at

DAM for free any day of the

week w/student ID.

We welcome our newest

wildcat to our AMP family

Congrats to Mrs. and Mr.

Charterina on the birth of their

daughter.

AMP also welcomes area artist/

educator Betony Coons to our

AP Studio Art classroom for

added guidance as the deadline

for portfolios closes in.

Congratulations to Liz Baxley for being select-ed for the Gala at CO State Thespian Conven-tion in December and to perform @ the Na-tional Thespian Festival this summer!
