The Feast of the Epiphany

The first Sunday after New Year’s Day is the Feast of the Epiphany. It commemorates the visit of the Magi, the three kings bearing gifts for the newborn Christ in the stable at Bethlehem. Their visit is an important reminder that Jesus came to bring salvation to all nations.

A Catholic custom is to write over the door the numerals for the current year and, in the middle of the numerals the initials CMB for the three wise men, Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar. So on Epiphany Sunday this year, for example, the custom is to write “20 + C + M + B + 19” over your door. This custom reminds all in the home to ask the prayers of Casper, Melchior, and Balthasar during the calendar year 2019.

Besides being an abbreviation for the names of the three wise men, CMB is also the abbreviation for the Latin Christus Mansionem Benedicat (may Christ bless the home). Source: Catholicism for Dummies

The Epiphany of the Lord

LIGHT OF THE WORLD

We believe that Jesus is the Light of the World. To say this about Jesus is to say something about ourselves. Christ’s light is meant to illuminate every corner of the earth and gather all people together. Today’s scriptures reveal what that means.

In the Gospel story of the magi from the East we see Jesus, even as an infant, gathering people of different religions and races to his light. The magi bring the child their finest gifts and tell others of the light that they have seen. The reading from Ephesians reminds us that all Christians are “members of the same body, and copartners” in divine life. There ought not to be divisions among us: all should gather together under the light of Christ. Finally, Isaiah paints a picture of what the people of God, the church, should look like. We are to reflect the Light of the World so that all nations can walk by Christ’s light and rulers by his shining radiance. When we do, all people will be gathered to Christ, bearing their finest gifts and “proclaiming the praises of the Lord.”

GOLD, FRANKINCENSE, AND MYRRH The gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh portend the manner in which Jesus’ light is to spread to the whole world. Myrrh, a perfume used for burial, foreshadows his death. Gold is a gift for royalty, and frankincense signifies holiness. Together they indicate that, through his suffering and death, Jesus will become both the afflicted King, in whose service we are to offer our gifts to the afflicted, and the eternal Priest, whose sacrifice we are to make known as the source of light uniting Christians and all humanity.

By our unity, our lives, and our witness, we are to reveal that Jesus Christ is indeed the Light of the World.

God of every time and season, you give us another year

to fill with new beginnings. We have so many dreams for this year,

so many promises we want to keep, so many new habits we want to learn.

Yet so much from last year is still left undone.

Erase our failings of the old year, clear away the decay left by our complacency, and wipe clean the slate of broken covenants

from the year gone by. As the calendar changes

and the old gives way to the new, help us not to dwell on the past

but to use its memory to move us ever forward to your kingdom.

Renew our hope and strengthen our resolve so that we may serve you faithfully

through every season and walk joyfully each day of the year. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Happy New Year to everyone from the St. John School Family. We ask God to bless you all and shine His light over you. May the New Year be filled with many blessings.

We ask that you pray for our students and their families as they begin a new year.
