Capital Campaign update Many, many thanks from your campaign committee for the generous, prayerful response to the Capital Campaign. We have reached our goal with a total pledge response of $771,330. Your abundant generosity has been shown in the amount of pledge gifts that we have already received $184,612. The work on the roof, our first priority, can begin in the spring as soon as the weather allows. Watch for updates on the progress as we continue to refresh and restore our building and our presence in the neighborhood and in the city. Thursday, January 9 6:30pm in the Parlor This is a support, education and advocacy group for lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people, their families, friends and allies. Recycle Sunday January 12 8:00 - 10:45am Bring your sorted and clean recycle materials to the north parking lot. We will help you unload your vehicle if you are all dressed up for church service. Since we skipped last month due to weather, we know it will be a busy, busy morning so the better job you can do of sorting and cleaning your items in prior to bringing them Sunday will be a great help and help us be more efficient. Advent Decorations Just a reminder that the decorations need to be removed by Sunday. Please “undecorate” your designated areas this week. Thanks for your help! Unused Holiday Cards Please bring any unused holiday cards with their envelopes to the church. Drop them off in the church office or give to Jo Lynn Lewis. We share these during the next holiday season during the Food Pantry for those that need them. They are so very grateful and so appreciative to receive them since they cannot afford to purchase. Alice Keech Day Circle Our new combined format for our day circle will begin Wednesday, January 15, at 10:00am in the church parlor. We have decided to continue the name, Alice Keech Circle. January brings a new year starting with our pledge service. Instead of lunch, our hostesses will serve light refreshments. Anyone is welcome to join this fellowship of women for study and mission.
Lay Academy - Confucius, Buddha, Jesus, and Muhammad This DVD lecture/discussion series examines these four crucially important and influential figures both separately and comparatively in an effort to grasp the essential features of their lives and teachings. The lecturer is Prof. Mark W. Muesse of Rhodes College. Discussion leaders is Dr. Keith Williamson. Join us Wednesday nights at 6:30pm beginning Wednesday, January 8th, in the Double Circle room, B4 (in the basement). Third Thursday Crawls for 2014 January 16 - Bite Me BBQ February 20 - Rolling Hills CC Join us on Thursday, January 16th at 6:30pm at Bite Me BBQ located at 132 N. St. Francis between Douglas and First St. They have delicious food for all, including vegetarians! All are welcome for this informal and fun event A. great way to meet others from CHUM. Expect to have a FUN time! On February 20th, we will return to Rolling Hills Country Club for our Valentine’s Dinner. What a beautiful event this is and all are welcome whether single or a couple. More details and menu will be in future newsletters. A fun way to celebrate Valentine’s Day! Please call one of the following to make your reservation for either or both of these fun gatherings. You Can Help the Knit Wits They are collecting McDonald’s new still-in-the-package promo toys to add in with the hats they have made for Children’s Mercy next year. If you would like to help, collect these items and bring to the church office. It will be greatly appreciated by the Knit Wits but especially by the children at Kansas City’s Children’s Mercy Hospital. Furbees and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are the current give-a-way but you might be able to still get the cute mini Build-a-Bears if you ask the managers. My Dear Friends, I a m t r u l y q u i t e overwhelmed. Many thanks to all of you for an outstanding
last day Sunday as your organist. I loved the reception in the parlor, and the brunch in Fellowship Hall. And even more thanks to you for all the hugs, well wishes, cards, and gifts. I am humbled by your generosity. When asked why I have chosen to retire at this time, I am reminded of the words spoken by Beverly Sills, when asked the same question upon her retirement from the Metropolitan Opera: "I would rather be asked to stay, than asked to leave." AGAPE, Rm. 201 - Good turnout for a cold winter morning and lots of good
snacks - thank you to Bob and Marieke. We started "Zealot" with Nancy telling
about the author and the book's introduction. Sunday, Dave will lead chapters 1
and 2. Guests are welcome to join us anytime at the west end of the 2nd floor.
Suzanne is working to confirm our retreat facilitator for the 25th and 26th.
Sunday's treats will be potluck-everyone bring something you've got on hand.
ARCHITECTS, Rm. B1 – Enid has begun a book by Rev. Richard Wilke and
she started with the story of The Wise Men prior to Christmas.
BUILDERS, Rm. 305 - We will be continuing our study of “Immigration in the
Bible” with Darlene Scheffer.
COMMUNICATORS, Rm. 301 - Thank you Robin for playing for us. Thank
you Ernie and Becky for the lesson. Upcoming events include: Annual biscuit
and gravy breakfast on January 25 at Pam and Barry’s home and our trip to
Chicago during the weekend of June 19. Prayer requests: Pat’s step-mother, trav-
elers, and Debbie Wilson. Devotions Sunday will be by Barry.
CONTEMPORARY STUDIES, Rm. B5/7 - A stalwart group of twelve joined
together on this brisk and snowy Sunday. We remember Richard Greene this
week with his birthday on the 9th. Stan Capper reported on Gail and her current
trip to Haiti. Lay Academy begins Wednesday with a series on "Confucius,
Buddha, Jesus, & Muhammad". Carl Martin presented today's lesson on "In
David's City of Bethlehem". The two tables discussed personal impressions of
pageantry of the Christmas story. Sunday, we begin Part III - Light, Fulfillment
and Joy with Chapter 7: "Light Against the Darkness".
DOUBLE CIRCLE, Rm. B4 - Five people came for a very short class. We also
welcomed Moe’s daughter, Jane, whom we are always excited to have visit.
TRAVELING COMPANIONS, Chapel @ 11:00am - Join us for discussion on
spiritual development and personal growth.
VICEROY, Rm. B3 - Joseph, maybe a transgendered son, is sold and taken as a
slave to Egypt. He becomes visible to a leader’s wife because of his ability and
she attempts to seduce him. The story resembles a modern TV drama. Visitors
are welcome to learn something new about our Hebrew ancestors. Come join us!

SUNDAY SCHOOL CLASS NOTES CLASSES MEET AT 9:40 AM UNLESS NOTED
Snack Suppers begin on Wednesday, January 8th Remember that starting on Wednesday, January 8th, we will be serving supper from 5:30 - 6:30pm before classes and meeting. This is a great opportunity for a delicious inexpensive meal and a time to visit and get acquainted with others from CHUM. The cost is as follows: $5.00 per person $2.00 for children 8 and under $2.00 for a PB & J Sandwich $15.00 for a family Mark your calendar and plan to come join us every Wednesday from January 8 through May 7, with the only exception being Wednesday, March 19th. The CHUM RECYCLERS will be hosting the first Snack Supper of 2014! We will be serving a variety of soups including soups for the vegetarians that wish to have a meatless soup.
Music @ the Hill We will not be having our monthly Music @ the Hill in January since
we are hosting so many events in Fellowship Hall that afternoon and evening with Rev. Doctor Tex Sample. Music will return in February!
Welcome Kevin Calloway to CHUM Kevin Calloway joined CHUM as the new organist this past Sunday, January 5. He is the 12th of 13 children born to Mr. and Mrs. W. L. Calloway. His musical family toured the United States in the 50’s and 60’s and were known as the “Singing Calloways”. When Kevin began playing the organ at the age of nine, his legs were barely long enough to reach the foot pedals. He held his first church organ position at the age of twelve. At that time he began organ studies with the well-known organ teacher, Dorothy Addy, of Wichita, KS. While attending Wichita Heights High School, he won a Concerto Competition, which allowed him to perform Poulene’s Organ concerto at the age of fifteen. During his college career, he was asked to accept the position of Associate Organist at the famous Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church of Ft. Lauderdale, FL. At the age of 19 years, Kevin was one of only five students to study with the world famous Diane Bish. After that experience, Kevin won numerous awards and competi-tions; one of which allowed him to study in Paris, France, for 90 days in a total im-mersion program. He studied the works of the French masters on the organs of Paris and immersed himself in the French culture. Kevin is sought out as a recitalist, clinician, and has performed extensively throughout the world. He is a conductor, composer, and vocalist. He is also a recording artist with 3 CDs to his credit. Please be sure to welcome Kevin to CHUM when next you see him. We are pleased to have Kevin join our CHUM family.
