THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6 Isaiah speaks poetically of the coming of the Lord. He describes how “darkness covers the earth” but light and glory appear over God’s chosen people. Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6 Paul tells the Ephesians that the Jews and Gentiles are now co-heirs of the promises God has made. He explains that both groups are now members of one body through Jesus Christ. Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12 After Jesus’ birth, three astrologers from the east came to Jerusalem and inquired about the newborn king of the Jews. King Herod became greatly angered, and asked the astrologers to bring him more information about the child once they had found him, so that he too could pay homage to the infant. However, Herod’s true plan was to kill Jesus. The wise men were warned in a dream not to return to him and they took a different route to return home.

WITH GRATITUDE FOR THE MOST RECENT GIFTS
TO OUR COMMUNITY On the weekend of January 11th as the Christmas season comes to a close and we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord, we will also celebrate the gift of all newly baptized babies in our community at all Masses.
They are truly gifts from God to us and we are grateful for their presence with us. A tree will be located in the back of the church with ornaments representing each child baptized in our community over the past year. Parishioners are invited to take one of these ornaments home and pray for this child and their family throughout the new year. A special blessing will also be given for these children at each Mass. Parents of babies baptized within the last year are asked to forward a photo by January 6th, either via email to [email protected] or drop one off at the Parish Office.

FAITH FORMATION NEWS
Today’s Gospel tells us about three Wise Men who set out to find Baby Jesus. God used a star to direct them to Bethlehem, where Jesus was. Herod, who was king at that time, was afraid Jesus would grow up to become king and take away his power. The king set out to find Jesus, but no matter how hard Herod tried, he could not find Jesus because Herod was not following God's plan. The only time we can be sure of the best path to take is when God is guiding us. Let us remember to ask God to help us find Jesus and welcome Him into our hearts and homes!
There are No Classes this Sunday, January 4th, due to the Christmas Break. Sunday Students return next Sunday, January 11.
Weekday Students return to classes this Tuesday, January 6 and Wednesday, January 7.
Today is the Feast of the Epiphany, when the Magi followed the Star to Bethlehem, where they found Jesus, worshiped Him and brought Him gifts. May we always remember to follow Jesus, the Light of the World – He is truly the Best Gift of All!
ST. ELIZABETH HOUSE SHELTER DINNER On Saturday, January 10th, we will provide and serve a meal for the residents of St. Elizabeth House Shelter in Hartford. If you wish to participate in this ministry by cooking, baking, or making a monetary donation, please sign up in the back of the Church this weekend. Monetary donations can be placed in the collection basket in an envelope marked St. Elizabeth House Dinner. Please make checks payable to St. Peter Claver. Food donations will need to be dropped off at the Parish Center on Saturday, January 10th between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. For additional information please call Gigi Frailey at (860) 561-4235, option 3.
A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly
The Epiphany of the Lord January 4, 2015 “See, darkness covers the earth, and thick clouds cover the peoples; but upon you the Lord shines, and over you appears his glory. Nations shall walk by your light, and kings by your shining radiance. Raise your eyes and look about; they all gather and come to you: your sons come from afar, and your daughters in the arms of their nurses. Then you shall be radiant with what you see, your heart shall throb and overflow.”
We continue to bask in the Christmas season. The Nativity, Holy Family and Motherhood of Mary lead us to the great Epiphany. We become immersed with details of three gifts, magi from the east, the plotting of Herod. Our camel led journey brings us to the person of Christ. As the astrologers returned to their place, changed by the Christ event, we too should reflect on the change which has taken place for us. Perhaps we travelled and visited, or others did us the favor. The light of Christ, perhaps has dimmed as we said goodbye and return to normal. Maybe there was some sadness too during the days of Christmas joy, the absence of a loved one, or family member, because of death or sickness. The prophet Isaiah reminds us of the light, the radiance, ‘raise your eyes and look about.’ The darkness of world and personal problems cannot take away the brilliance of the light of Christ. The magi brought their treasures, and we have been given not gold, myrrh and frankincense, but we carry within us the treasure of Christ Himself. As they opened their coffers we continue to open our hearts to receive the Christ.
