Finishing second wasn’t much of a disappointment to Williams, who now has 45 PBA titles, more than $4 mil- lion in career earnings and is still one of the PBA Tour’s most feared competitors. “I feel Earl’s record is better than mine because it was more condensed,” Williams said. “Earl bowled 14 years and 400 or so events. I’ve bowled well over 600 by now, maybe 700. Some people will argue Earl’s era was tougher, but others will argue my era was tougher. The reality is, people threw the ball differently in each era. That’s the way the game is played.” “I’m very pleased to be No. 2,” Williams continued. “If Dick Weber would have had 45 titles at the time Earl was still bowling, he probably would have kept on bowling because he would have wanted someone to chase. As it was, he retired because no one had close to the number of titles he had. He didn’t have anything to shoot for.” “Some people don’t re- member that Earl was Player of the Year in 1983, the year he retired,” said Williams, who is one of the PBA’s best histori- ans. “And he didn’t even bowl a full season that year.” continued on page 11 LAS VEGAS-Patrick Allen won the Professional Bowl- ers Association’s H&R Block Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes Sunday, but he didn’t feel very good about it. The Wesley Chapel, Fla., left-hander slipped past his fellow southpaw, close friend and Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour roommate Rhino Page of Topeka, Kan., 267-263, to win his second career major championship and his second title in three weeks. It meant a $50,000 payday and a two- year PBA Tour exemption in the crowning event of the PBA’s 50th Anniversary Gala week. Allen had a hard time shak- ing off the fact that his buddy basically handed him the glory by making an errant shot on his second shot in the 10th frame. Needing only a nine-count and spare after striking on his first shot in the final frame, Page – the PBA’s reigning Rookie of the Year – missed the headpin, knocking down four pins and his dream of winning his first major title disappeared. “Rhino got the ball a little too far left. You don’t win out here if you don’t get some breaks, but that’s not the way you want to win. I got a huge break two weeks ago against Walter Ray Williams Jr., but to be honest, I didn’t feel as bad for Walter Ray. He’s got 45 titles. You have to get breaks to beat him.” “Over the past few weeks, everything has been going my way,” Allen added. “It was an honor to be here the whole week. Winning the Tourna- ment of Champions, especial- ly this week, is something I’ll never forget. It was an honor just to be here this week.” The victory for Allen, who was the top qualifier making his PBA record-tying fifth consecutive television appear- ance, continued an amazing turn-around after a dismal start to the season. “After the first six weeks, I was on the verge of bowl- ing for my job. NORWALK—Back to Keystone Monday and star performer of the day was Jarra Gallina. Baby split con-versions are never reported but Jarr’s three splitaculars rate mention; 6-7, 4-7-10 and 5-10. High scorers this weeks features Roberta McNaught 212-563, Patti Givehchin 213-563, Cyndie Martin 201-558, Sue McGill and Gladcye Per-rin 529, Bernice Bennett 516, Dottie Lawn 514, Dee Phipps 503, Doris Lewis 203-502. 203-502, Margo McClain 497 and Aresia McGee 494.

A travel league usually re-sults in lower averages than house league and such is the case in the Vegas league of 64 bowlers (plus subs) which shows the following; 9 mem-bers are scoring over averages, 3 are even and the 21 subs are posting 4 over and 2 even.Current high average leader is Doris Lewis at 179, 5 over her book and it’s interesting to note that Doris does not bowl in any other leagues.

Doris’ Hair Designs still tops league standings at 45 wins, but the 5th place team is only 4.2 games behind them. Keystone #2 has 44.1; Cerritos #2 and Westminster #1 tie at 41 wins, and David McNaught CPA has 40.2. The rest of the league trails at 38.2 down to tied cellar teams at 28.2.

The league will be making up games lost on November 17, at Fountain Bowl, when we return there on February 9. for a third time. The missing games will be made up prior to the regular scheduled date. brother” (who was five years younger).

Rolf lived up to all his mother’s expectations. He dearly loved his parents. When Rolf and Lin went to Germany in 2001, they visited Bad Pyr-mont, where his father had built a beautiful home. It was still there. Rolf said it looked just like it did when they lived there. He knocked on the door and spoke to the people who resided there. They were thrilled to meet Rolf and Lin and invited them in so they could see the home again. It was one of the most gratifying times of Rolf’s life.

Before meeting Lin, Rolf spent 20 years as a dance in-structor in the Chicago area at the Arthur Murray and Fred Astaire Dance Studios. At the Astaire Studios, Rolf trained teachers. He traveled around to various studios and also put on annual balls studios con-ducted at hotels that included dinner dances. He coordinated the entire packages and also emceed the programs. He enjoyed his job and also did some nightclub shows with a dance partner.

Perhaps Rolf’s dancing skills played a large part in his bowling instructional career. He was a master at teaching bowling beginners, as well as veterans of the game. He specialized in teaching proper timing and graceful, rhythmic approaches.

Subsequently, Rolf was employed in Chicago as Re-gional Director for Famous Artists School, a company that sold art courses with leads and in-home sales calls. In 1969 his company transferred him to Memphis, Tennessee as Southeast Regional Direc-tor. This is where he met and married Lin. In 1971, he was appointed Southwest Regional Director and moved to Los An-geles. Unfortunately, Famous Artists School went bankrupt, forcing Rolf to seek other em-ployment. About this time, he had a friend, Skip Russell, who was assistant manager for Hollywood Legion Bowl. Russell was being promoted to manager and offered Rolf the

opportunity to be his assistant manager. Rolf gladly accepted the position, which also led to the beginning of his bowling instructional career.

In 1986, the Gaugers moved to Phoenix. Coinci-dently, Rolf’s old buddy, Skip Russell was managing Bruns-wick Mission Bell Lanes. Not too surprising, Rolf began conducting bowling clinics at Brunswick Mission Bell. He not only established a reputa-tion as a world -class instruc-tor but also penned the most comprehensive instructions of any instructor in the country in the Arizona Desert Bowler publication.

Later, his instructional ari-cles appeared in several other western states; the Las Vegas Ten Pin Journal and the Cali-fornia Bowling News. As his reputation expanded, he be-came a regular coach at Super School and a columnist for Bowling This Month maga-zine. I believe Rolf’s instruc-tional columns were the BEST in the country, particularly considering he did his own graphics and illustrations.

Personally, I lost more than a friend. Rolf was like a broth-er. I didn’t know him except for reading his great bowl-ing instructional columns in the Desert Bowler, a popular publication in Phoenix, Ari-zona. We became fast friends about 10 or 12 years ago after I called his home to see if he had any interest in coaching the Saudi Arabia National Team. I received a message from Ibrahim Juraifani, a bowling distributor and promoter from Jedda, Saudi Arabia. He asked me if I was interested in coach-ing the Saudi National bowling team that was willing to pay me $48,000 a year, plus a car, a home, all expenses, plus two annual paid trips back to the USA. I told him I had no inter-est in the job but promised to try to find someone who might consider it

Inasmuch as I am half Ara-bic, (Lebanese) I knew I had to recommend someone who was not only highly qualified but especially one possessing high morals. Having read Rolf’s articles for several years, he was the first person to came to my mind. However, like

myself, Rolf had no interest in leaving home. He thanked me for my call but, more than that, he left a lasting impression on me with his warm words of appreciation. His response led me to recommend him to the late publisher of Bowling This Month, Bob Summerville; not only as a coach for Super School, but also as a featured columnist for the popular magazine. Not too surprising, Rolf became one of Bowling This Month’s most popular writers and undoubtedly one of its finest coaches at BTM’s annual Super School. He will be sorely missed.

It is often said, “life is not fair”. Despite all his achieve-ments in successfully coach-ing hundreds of bowlers, from beginners to juniors, to those of all ages, Rolf NEVER got his just dues. To my knowl-edge, he has not been elected to any Hall of Fame. He has never received the accolades bestowed on coaches like Fred Borden, Carmen Salvino, Rod Ross, Susie Minshew, Jeri Ed-wards or any coaches/instruc-tors who have been ordained Gold Level status. I can assure anyone in bowling that Rolf Gauger was at least equal to and possibly more competent than any of them, including Tom Kouros and myself.

I have often written that nominees for Halls of Fame not only require credentials for selection but equally as important, require the pub-licity and support of friends. Unfortunately Rolf was never one to toot his own horn. Consequently, his outstand-ing instructional work was never heralded. In fact, until he joined the staff of Bowling This Month, he was a virtual unknown, except in his own little bailiwick.

Fortunately, and finally, by virtue of his association with Bowling This Month, he ex-panded his reputation among the top coaches and writers in the bowling world. One thing is absolutely certain. Rolf Gauger deserves Hall of Fame status, especially in the Phoe-nix and Arizona State Bowling Halls of Fame.

God Bless my beloved friend Rolf. May his soul rest in peace.

Muzzarelli Wins ABTA Las Vegas Event at the South Point (L-R) Marife Catalasan 4th, Will Samson (runner up) $2,000, Jeff Muzzarelli (Champion) $5,650, his wife and supporter Linda, Anna Bautista 3rd $1,000, Joe Page III 5th and Dave Kaus South Point Manager.

LAS VEGAS—The South Point was the Host of our Las Vegas Open. The ABTA Bowl-ers converged on the beautiful property, Lanes, Hotel, & Ca-sino. 523 entrants entered the event producing great payoffs, and a lot of fun.

One bowler having a lot of fun, but working hard was Jeff Muzzarelli, the pride of Murphysboro, Illinois, who has been with us five years finally bowled well. In fact a most stupendous performance in winning six straight match-es in the top 32 single elim finals to claim his first ABTA Title and a nice $6,450 for his fine bowling. He downed long time ABTA Member Will Samson in the title game to claim his first ABTA Title.

The economy didn’t seem to slow down these bowlers who came to the South Point. As the 523 entrants established a $21,000 Prize Fund and Much Much More in Optional Pots, Brackets and Drawings with Cut scores on a medium side daily; (the highest +75 and lowest day at +38, ladies +28).

Due to the great turnout we saw 104 Bowlers advance to a full house of semi-finals. After skipping 18 lanes each game each bowler had a taste of each area of the house. Al-though all 106 are going to cash, their goal is to advance to the top 32 Single elimina-

Midtown Lanes Saturday 12:00-1:00-2:30-4:00 & 6:00 PM semis 7:45 PMtion finals which includes 7 guaranteed Women.

After the three game semis we had Men, and 7 guaranteed Women making +48 to make the top 32 Finals. Topping the field was the affable Will Sam-son of Rancho Cucamonga with a great +106 and “ Ace” Cordero was in second at +96. Will gets the advantage of sit-ting out and bowling for the title. Cordero would enter in round two of the Single elims.

The Matches were on. Losing in round #1 - getting $180 - were William Au, An-cil Suase, Som Seng, Steve Smith, Chris Romero, James Sampson, Alan Basto , Robert Fales, Mary Andruczyk, Be-dell Vasquez, Orpah Tolliver, Benito Yra, Renan Cruz, Fred Ringor and Donald Pulliam.

Round two saw Bob God-den, Ace Cordero, Butch Obrar, Dana LeCount, Greg Velarde, Jeremy Paulsen, Sol Cericos, and Roland Suase lost out and got checks for $200 finishing in 10-17th places.

Round three got conten-tious with Jeff Muzzarelli downing John Burton 227-209. Rick Valdez fell to Joe Page in a tight one 223-218. Anna Bautista edged Ada Wong 200-189. Marife Cata-lasan struck often downing Loretta Lawson 255-226. Los-ers finished 6-9 th places and $250 each.

Round four saw Muzzarelli

bowl well downing Page 221-100. Ms. Bautista on her game downed Ms. Catalasan 221-207. Marife and Joe were 4th and 5th and $400 each with Anna and Jeff to meet for the right to bowl Will Samson for the title.

This game saw Jeff toss a pair of doubles to lead and win out over the pretty upstart Anna who gave it her all by 221-194. Anna was 3rd and $1,000 with Jeff on to the title game .

The Title Game was on and Will elected to lead off. He did with a strike but Jeff started with three strikes to lead after Will opened. Will doubled in frames 4-5 after Jeff had a split in the 5th to regain the lead and held it until he opened in frames 7-8 & 9. Jeff tossed a big double to ice the win in frames 9-10.

The title and $5,650 was his 201/223-156/193 and most deservedly so. Jeff won every match on his way to the title and was tossing strikes along the way. He is a great guy and we are proud to have him as our latest champion. He has been with us five years. Great Bowling Jeff!!

Nice bowling by a true gentleman Will Samson, who held the lead with three frames to go. He really bowled very well , and we are proud of him. Great Bowling Will and same can be said of Anna B, Marife

and Joe Page!Tourney Hi Qualifiers were

Allan Basto +140 and Aido Wong led the ladies +118. They will get paid entries.

The optional doubles hit Basto again!! Yes, he teamed with Jun Cadenas and a 1418 good for $230 (they are ABTA League Members!) Kris Or-donez and Glen Dantes 2nd 1411 $210, Basto and Dan “the Man” Eguilos 3rd 1401 $190. We paid a huge 23 places in the $5.00 doubles. $2,490 at South Point.

The Match Game 3 was hit by five of our members (Mirage Floorboss), Robert Yado, James Samson, Brad Le Count, Vuong Do, and Jeff Taino. They split the $2,825 pot and got $565 each for their $5.00 entry.

The Match Series was NOT HIT as 523 entrants did not match a 670. So with the Carry Over of $2,068 we will estimate a $2,400 Match Se-ries at Midtown Lanes in Los Angeles and for only a $2.00 entry fee!

The 3-6-9 worth $1,500 was not hit. Glen Tse shocked the large field and missed on shot 2. So we go for $1,600 at Midtown.

Pretty Tami Keathley was drawn for the Hot Shot Pot and had a chance at $150. She was not present but got a $25 con-solation. We will have $175 in the Hot Shot Pot at Midtown and it is free to our bowlers. If you are there during the final squad and your name drawn, you have a free chance for the cash. Just toss two nine counts, if over 40 Hcp, 1 nine count and 10 Hcp and under, 3 nine counts to win.

ABTA Notes: Champion Jeff Muzzarelli hails from Murphysboro, Illinois and used a Complete NV for the win and is married to Nancy who is his #1 fan to be sure. He dedicates the win to his Mother Bernice Muzzarelli. He enjoys the ABTA and has bowled with us five years.

Will Samson is from Ranch Cucamonga and used a Cell drilled by Chris Hagin at Deer Creek Lanes, He is married to a pretty lady Vida and has 3 kids Jo Anne, James, and John.

They are ABTA Members. He thanks the ABTA and Bob for a wonderful Tournament, family, friends, Elvin Godoy, Renan and Cecille Cruz and Robert Yra and Beth and An-thony Borci.

Anna Bautista hails from Carson and used a Storm drilled by Mike Wahl at Cer-ritos Lanes. She thanks family and friends for support notably Mom Ruby, Dad Jim and Sis Charlotte and daughter Karis-sa, Chong, Jerilyn, Madonna Rhena and David.

We the ABTA would like to thank Our Faithful Mem-bers for support in these trying times! You are what makes us go. Without our Members, we would have no ABTA! We will always do our best for you. Thanks and God Bless!

One For The Thumb!

SAN DIEGO—In NABI San Diego tournament action at Admiral Robinson Center over the weekend, Ed Lo-mibao secured title #5, Ed is a long time NABI member, & virtually every tournament participant, but he had to work especially hard to capture this win. Qualifying in the middle of the field wasn’t too taxing, but finishing the semifinals in the #5 slot meant four tough matches for victory. Match #s 2 & 3 were especially chal-lenging, Amy Gottlieb forced him to get the first two strikes & good count in the 10th frame & he responded by striking out & winning by a scant 3 pins. Same scenario against James Horst & his margin of victory was four pins. In the final match against top seeded Roger Rabanal, they were tied in the 9th frame & on spares. Ed rolled the first two + 7 in the 10th, while Roger had an unfortunate split. Congratula-tions & great bowling under pressure, Ed.

The actual finishing posi-tions were 5th, James Rostello, 4th Amy Gottlieb, 3rd, James Horst, 2nd Roger Rabanal & Ed, 1st.

Guaranteed $50 sidepots were collected by Alan Grob-meier, Norm Rauch, Marvyn Galsim, Stacie Watson, Mike Yellen, Phil Horn, Phil Diaz (1/2) Mike Tangonan (1/2), Rostello & Horst. The 3-6-9 pot was shared by Chad Hill, Homer Bautista & Amy Got-tlieb.

Thanks to Dom Deluca & his staff for once again provid-ing one of the PBA Experience oil patterns for the bowlers to compete on. All agreed that getting to try different condi-tions helps make for better bowling skills. Thanks, Dom.

The next NABI tourna-ment will be on February 7th at Kearny Mesa. Watch for details in the next edition of the Bowling News. See you at Kearny on the 7th …. we’ll save a cookie (+ some Valen-tine goodies) for you!

LAS VEGAS—We are pleased to announce that Len Nich-olson, famed lane maintenance guru, will prepare the lane con-ditions that will be used for the upcoming High Roller and “A Game”, January 31 through February 7!

Nicholson is no stranger to High Roller events, having served as consultant for many Showboat/High Roller events over the years. Nicholson provided the lane conditions for the recent-ly held November Senior Classic with resounding success. It marked the first time that High Roller had retained his services since moving operations to Sam’s Town. Nicholson is very fa-miliar with the lane surfaces and lane machines at Sam’s Town.

Nicholson, former head of lane maintenance for the PBA, among his many other positions, has proven many times that he can assist tournament promoters in providing a consistent and playable pattern. He will work closely with High Roller and the Sam’s Town staff.

According to Nicholson, “Kegel has already sent in Service Rep. Bud Dacheaux to ensure that the Kegel lane machines are all up to par and that the players can rest assured that everything will be as professional as humanly possible.”

The free practice sessions offered by Sam’s Town will as-sist players in matching up their equipment. The patterns will be posted on site. “We are very excited to bring Kegel on with us,” says High Roller’s Brad Edelman. “Players who bowl with us see similar lane conditions each year and it’s time we showed them something different. Len has the ability to bring the most players into play without creating abnormal scores!”

Walk-ins are welcome! You can also enter on line at www.high-roller.com. It’s fast, easy and secure!

620 Scratch Trios

Report From Forest

LAKE FOREST — Team 4’s one game lead looks great, but the four teams holding it up are out to snatch the top spot. The trio on #4 includes Dan Murray at a current 185 aver-age. Alan Meyerson is a little down from his 200 entering av-erage, sitting at 188. Plus Mike Cacace anchoring at 201. Last week, I read the league sheet wrong and gave current averages as book average—sorry guys. Sure sounded good though! Let’s take a look at Team 8 that’s holding up the whole darned league. They only have 11 wins compared to Team 4’s

Glenn Hizer Retires FromSouthern Los AngelesUSBC Offi ce Position

BELLFLOWER — Glenn Hizer, local USBC Executive Secrea-tary for the past 12 years, retired December 31, 2008. When asked if he missed the offi ce, he said, “Yes — but I miss visiting the bowling centers more”. Born in Wisconsin on October 25, 1932, he still calls Wiscon-sin home and visited there recently. After graduating from High School, Glenn joined the Army and did 5 years duty. Naturally, college was next on the agenda. Glenn studied engi-neering at the University of Wisconsin. In 1970, Glenn ventured to California and the Norwalk area where he worked on various new building structures. In 1982, Glenn started bowling at Friendly Hills Lanes and Wonderbowl-Downey. After Wonderbowl closed, his league moved to Del Rio Lanes and he found a new home. Shortly after becoming a league bowler, Glenn was hit by a car which broke his leg. What better way to be around bowling with a broken leg than keeping score! His score keeping ability was rewarded with a plaque — naming him to the “Score Keepers Hall of Fame!!! (Any other members out there???) In 1983, the Southeast District Y.A.B.A elected Glenn a direc-tor. Dealing with youth bowlers was gratifying and often a one man operation. Obviously being elected to the Southeast A.B.C. was the next step. In 1997, the South East A.B.C. and the Long Beach A.B.C. merged to establish the Southern Los Angeles County U.S.B.C. and hired Glenn Hizer as its Executive Director. The pay? One Dollar per month the fi rst three years! (As far as this writer knows, the $36 is still owed to Glenn.) Glenn was elected to both the Southeast A.B.C. Hall of Fame and the Southeast District Y.A.B.A. Hall of Fame. Retirement on Dec. 31, after 12 years on the job was tough, but he is enjoying having less stress, more travel, and time with friends. Thank you Glenn for a Job Well Done!

28 wins, but they have poten-tial. Their leadoffman David Brackett is down 12 pins from his book, but his 661 series proves that he can play. Kim Martin is down 24 pins at 176, with a high game of 249 and 630 series. Again — the game is there! Maybe its the equip-ment? Anchor Sam Hitchcock down 16 [pins from book, proudly owns a 290 game and 715 series. They just need to get their mellons jellen. Overall scores were down this week. Josh Kosh topped the

high series roll with a 621, fol-lowed by Tom Romaldo’s 620 and Mike Cacace’s 585. Individual efforts were lead by Jeff Carr 233, Mas Mala-pas and Sam Hitchcock tied at 221. Teams 4-5-1 and 8 need team names! Position round this coming week. Watch the placements change! No subs! Everybody bowls, every body pays, every body scores. Is this a great game?? Bowlers! I need ammunition for next weeks column, so get some practice in and grind out the big numbers.

NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSDEAF NEWS EITHER PICKED UP OR REPORTED TO ME

by Connie Marchione

PABLO YOMA 290/722 AT BRC WEST COVINAWEST COVINA—Pablo Yoma , who had a 279/905 last No-

vember in So. Calif. Deaf Traveling League was hot again on Jan. 23 with a 290 after games of 222-210 for 722 in his Friday night league at Brunswick West Covina Lanes.

Pablo was the young man to watch when in his first time in the mighty Great Lakes Deaf Tournament in Chicago he bowled 600 series in its Team, Doubles and Singles events.

KEN DEGROFF BACK TO BACK (287)756 & (258)743 MISSION HILLS—Ken DeGroff whose name is in USBC

record book for two times back to back 300 games, was asked on Tuesday Jan. 20 to sub in a league at Mission Hills Bowl. So he rushed back home to fetch his bowling balls and arrive in just time to start without warm-ups, hit 258-211-287 for 756. The 287 had 10 strikes in row and left a 4-9 split on 11th ball and picked up one. Then on the next day in his league at Brunswick Matador Bowl he rolled 258-235-250 for 743.

The deaf bowling nomadic who now resides in Sunland, CA used to travel around bowling in many tournaments both deaf and hearing, winning some deaf classics and hitting 300 games in some of them. He told me that he knew that several deaf bowlers had won several deaf classics but questioned me as to who had the most 300 games in different deaf tournaments in the country. That is a tough one for me to answer. One of the week if I have space, I will list some of his accomplishments, which is very in-teresting.

JAMES THEYKEN NEWEST DEAF MEMBER OF PBASAN DIEGO—James “Jim” Theyken whose credits includes

1997 Pacific Cost Deaf Bowler of Year, made good his desire to bowl in PBA Seniors tournament when he gets to his age of 50. Jim is now a new member of PBA and got his card and PBA Member Handbook of Rules and Regulations.

He is now studying it in order to buy new equipment of balls, shirts and shoes, which are allowed to use in PBA tournaments to avoid fines and disqualification.

Jim who averages above 210, joins three other deaf PBA members, Frank Gallo, Jr., Pete Kaczmarczyk and John Wuka-such. Only the oldest deaf member Gallo, Jr. is active as a regular on PBA Regional and Seniors tour.

We wish Jim lots of luck in PBA tournaments and learn as much as he can from Gallo and other members.

GALLO, JR. CASHED IN HIS LAST TWO PBA TOURNAMENTS OF 2008

BALTIMORE—Speaking of Frank Gallo, Jr., I have tried to follow his bowling in PBA tournaments and found out that he had cashed in his last two tournaments of 2008. I probably had missed more after that or there were no tournaments because of the holidays,

On Dec. 10 at Country Club Lanes in Baltimore, MD Wednes-day’s Tournament Qualifying Round (TQR) of the Lumber Liq-uidators Shark Championship, the 8th stop on the Lumber Liq-uidators PBA Tour (the Shark oil pattern is the longest of the 5 PBA oil patterns, measuring 44 feet of oil), Frank Gallo, Jr. placed 14th out of 89 bowlers. He scored 1462 for his 7 games to cash for $390.00. Only the top 7 and top amateur advance to the tournament. My guess is that this was the best Frank did.

Then on Dec. 19 in PBA South Region Decker Appraisal Waynesboro, VA Senior/Regular Doubles, Gallo, Jr. qualified in the Seniors part and was matched with a PBA regular bowler Kyle Troup of Taylorville, NC as doubles.

Together, Gallo, Jr. scored 1223 and Troup 1283 for 2506 to cash in 12th for $800 ($400 a piece)

In this new year I have not been able to track him.

SED Jr. Travelby David Gordon

LA HABRA – SED Jr. Travel was on the floor once again last Saturday, taking on the conditions at La Habra “300” Bowl. Some of the bowlers did very well and we had some excitement during the third game. Thank you goes out to the staff and man-agement for the outstanding accommodations, as always.

We start off this week with Chris Blankenship going 200/721 and Jasmine Morales 217. Then as mentioned – there was some excitement as J.D. Pelow, Max Slevcove, and Brandyn Roque were working on perfection in game three. Roque spared about mid-game and ended with a 244 to go with his 235 in game one. He finished with a 781 set. Slev-cove took it to the 9th frame trying to make it consecutive weeks with a perfect 300. He came up a touch short with a 278. He also had a 205 report-able game and completed his session with 825. Now for Mr. Pelow who took that third game with the front ten and my anxiety of three perfect games finally calmed down. Pelow posted up 239-283-246 for the last games to complete a 930 set for the day. Way to bowl – all of you.

Now for a quick league standing. Me, Myself & I (Pelow/vacant) is still on top with 243 points. Next up is Team Max! (Slevcove/vacant) with 232.5, followed by Big Booty ?? (Mark Curtis/vacant) at 219. Then we have Girls Gone Wild! (Deanna Carrillo/Kim Ferdnance), Quiet Sur-prise (Blankenship/Roque), The Destroyers (Jon Morales/Eric Mandzuch), and Disney Sweets (Jas. Morales/Amanda Neil).

The highs for the season are: Me, Myself & I with 1785 for team series, Team Max! for team game with 475, Carrillo-961 and Morales-261, and Pelow 1085 boys series, with Slevcove 300 for boys game. And just think we still have seven more bowling sessions.

This coming Saturday, we’re stepping back in time with a two-house double ses-sion. The first session kicks off at 12:00 noon at Del Rio Lanes. Then we pack it all up and head over to Keystone Lanes for the second set which will start about 2:15. That’s a lot of bowling SED, so make sure your hands and body are well healed and rested. Have a good week and I’ll see you at Del Rio.

Norwalk—As our 2nd Pepsi qualifying round draws to a close, I have decided to rename the event the Keyon Lemus – I Hate Keystone Tour. As you recall from last week’s article, the self-described arch enemy of Keystone Lanes led scoring in our first week of our two week Pepsi tour with a 970.

This past weekend, Keyon returned to what should now be his favorite bowling center. After picking up a spare (prob-ably a flush pocket 5 after the rack knocked out the 7-10 when I wasn’t looking), he goes off the sheet for a 290. Teammate Jeremy Glover showed his support with a 223 for a nice 513 team game. Game two saw both bowlers closer together as if in a secret “there is an I in team” competition.

Keyon edges Jeremy out by 2 pins 259 to 257, beating the previous team score by 3 pins at 516. I’m sure the team they were bowling against wasn’t too happy about the score, but I don’t think that Keyon and Jeremy were aware that they were bowling against anyone.

The next pair proved a bit daunting for Keyon where a slow start and a “Greek Church” stopped his bid for 800. Keyon fin-ished his set with a 201 and 217 for the sessions high series of 967. Jeremy closed his 920 with games of 204 and 236. Af-ter an impressive two week performance by Keyon, I can only offer three words of advice for his irrational dislike of such a fine bowling establishment – “Oh, SHUT UP!” Team 7 (no cool name Jeremy or Keyon?) maintain high game and high series honors with an impressive 1887 series.

Brent Shern scored in the low 800’s with an 803 series from a 205 and a couple of 204 games. Justin Gadaire shot 760, John Mc Cullin 756 and Austin Gadaire shot 710. The 200 shooters were John 224, Justin 221, Austin 220 and Steven Alford 213.

You guys have been pretty cool, lately, so I don’t have any-thing to rip into you about OTHER THAN that I am disappointed that none of your applied for the CWBA Star of Tomorrow schol-arship. I don’t feel that I should have to put a gun to your heads to make you apply for scholarships, but it looks like that what it may come down to!

On the subject of scholarships, Pepsi qualifying is done, and I’ll have your results at Cerritos on Saturday. You will have un-til February 7th to pay for your spot. Yes, we will be at Cer-ritos (Midtown rescheduled to April 4) this Saturday at 1:30. If you’ve forgotten how to get there, take the 91 freeway East, past the 605, and make a right when you exit Carmenita. You’ll see it on your right after about 30 seconds. See you then!
