*Call to Worship L: From north and south, from east and west, we come: P: God's people called to the Table where simple grace nourishes us. L: From down the street to across town, from single households to apartment dwellers: P: God's people are called to community, where we live and serve one another. L: From every class, every race, every status; from little ones with sippy cups to elders with overflowing hearts: P: God's people are called to witness to God's hope, to offer peace to a shattered world. • Notes about music offered in worship today

† Like many Russian composers of the 20th century, the peak of Dmitri Shostakovich's (1906–1975) compositional career occurred in a period when artists were required to conform to the dogma and ideals of Soviet socialism. He was publicly denounced twice for writing music that was "non-Russian" and too much influenced by Western compositional styles. As a result, his musical output become dualistic: one corpus of music written to appease the Party and earn a living, and another private set to channel his most personal ideas and musical convictions. His set of 24 preludes and fugues for piano (op. 87) fall in the latter category, and reveal the composer's admiration for the contrapuntal mastery of J. S. Bach. Frederic Rzewski (pron. zheff-skee; b. 1938) is an American composer. Many of his works are inspired by secular and socio-historical themes, show a deep political conscience, and feature improvisational elements. The People United Will Never Be Defeated! (1975) is a set of 36 variations on the Chilean song "¡El pueblo unido jamás será vencido!", the anthem of the Chilean resistance during the overthrow of the Pinochet regime in 1973. Rzewski wrote the work to raise awareness of the political climate in Latin America. The work demands extreme virtuosity and borrows musical idioms ranging from Impressionism to minimalism, all bound together by Rzewski's satiric sense of humor and brilliant originality.
