Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time January 29, 2017

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 5:3

OUR LADY OF PERPETUAL HELP

80 Wellington Ave, Daly City 94014

OPEN HOUSE January 29, 2017 11:00 am to 2:00 pm

OLPH is a transitional kinder-garten through grade 8 Catho-lic school which focuses on ed-ucating the whole child; spirit-ually, intellectually, socially, psychologically and physically, in light of Catholic/Christian principles and service. Please mark your calendar for this event.

THE CHOSEN REMNANT Zephaniah is one of the least-known of the Old Testament proph-ets. He speaks in today’s first reading of impending judgment. But the Lord will leave a “remnant” in Israel. This image of a remnant, or remainder, was to become vital to both Judaism and Christianity. Paul’s letter to Corinth makes obvious his deep concern for the Christians there. They are too self-confident, he says, too sure of them-selves. He admonishes them to re-member that Christ has given them all they have. Today’s Gospel comprises the opening of Jesus’ “Great Sermon.” As God gave Moses the law on Sinai, so now Jesus gathers his disciples on a hillside to teach them the new law. Each of these Beatitudes contrasts the humiliation of the present with the glory of the future: poverty vs. the riches of God’s kingdom, hunger for holiness vs. fulfillment in the Spirit, persecution vs. the reign of God. Jesus is here speaking to God’s chosen “remnant.” Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — You humble of the land, seek justice and humility, and the Lord will be your protection (Zephaniah 2:3; 3:12-13). Psalm — Blessed are the poor in spirit; the kingdom of heaven is theirs! (Psalm 146). Second Reading — God chose the weak of the world, those who count for nothing, so that whoever boasts should boast in the Lord (1 Corin-thians 1:26-31). Gospel — Jesus taught from the mountain: Blessed are the poor in spirit (Matthew 5:1-12a). Dear Parishioners and Friends, It is with great enthusiasm that I am informing you of the renovation starting on February 6, 2017. It has been two years from the time of planning, fundraising, approval of the Archdiocese, obtaining city and building permits, etc., to getting close to the fruition of this project. I ask that you walk with me and the parish community in prayer, patience, and cooperation as we journey together in the realization of a new and spirit-invoking altar. As human beings, the senses appeal to us: sight, sound, smell, and feel. It is my hope that the new altar will speak to us beyond the senses that we understand. That the Holy Spirt will indwell in us more deeply, allow-ing us to walk uprightly with God through His people in this community. The tent in the courtyard will be put up on February 1, 2, and 3 but will not be available for use until February 6th. Please take note that there will be NO AFTERNOON MASSES on Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the months of renovation. Thank you so much, Fr. Rene
