DELIVER US FROM EVIL

And immediately there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, “What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” But Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be silent, and come out of him!” And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying with a loud voice, came out of him. And they were all amazed, so that they questioned among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching! With authority he commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey him.”

As you pray the ‘Our Father,’ you pray “…but deliver us from evil?” To this petition I sometimes add: “and take not your holy spirit from me; create in me a clean heart and renew a right spirit within me. Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation.”

When you pray “deliver us from evil”, you should include, “from every evil thought, every evil desire, and every evil word.” Take some time and get it all out; whatever evil is lurking at the door of your heart. Then, falling on the heels of that heart searching and praying I like praying, “O, my Jesus, forgive me my sins. Save me from the fires of hell. Lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of thy mercy.” And then I like finishing that off praying three times, “Lord, Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner, Amen.”

As the Gospel reminds us, Jesus acts with strength — with authority never before seen — unmoved by the presence of the evil one. See, the unclean spirit did no doubt who Jesus is — “I know who you are, the Holy One of God.” And you should not doubt who Jesus is. For the very mention of His Holy Name makes demons shudder and confess that He is the Son of God.

As you reflect on Jesus helping this poor soul and the unclean spirit, does it not remind you that it is Jesus who came to destroy the work of the devil; how that He was anointed by the Holy Spirit and went everywhere doing good and healing all who were held somehow by the power of evil? (1 John 3:8; Acts 10:38)

What a mighty Savior Jesus is! It is Jesus about whom Moses speaks - that He will speak with authority. From his mouth will come the Word of the Lord and those who do NOT listen will answer for it. They are like the person who built his house on sand and the winds and the rain beat against his new house. And it fell, because it was built on sand. Such are those who prefer the words of soothsayers and evil oracles including Tarot Cards, Ouija board, Santeria, Brujeria, and Palm Reading. Satan is deceptive, attempting to appear as an angel of light. (2 Corinthians 11:14)

Many are they who testify how the mighty power and authority of Jesus sets them free from the snare of the devil. And let us not forget the folks at the synagogue who were among the first who understood and exclaimed, “With authority He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

Y luego hubo en la sinagoga un hombre con un espíritu inmundo; y él gritó: "¿Qué tienes

que ver con nosotros, Jesús de Nazaret? ¿Has venido a destruirnos? Sé quién eres, el Santo de Dios. "Pero Jesús lo reprendió, diciendo:" ¡Calla, y sal de él! "Y el espíritu inmundo,

convulsionándolo y gritando a gran voz, salió de él. Y todos quedaron asombrados, por lo

que preguntaron entre ellos, diciendo: "¿Qué es esto? ¡Una nueva enseñanza! Con autoridad manda incluso a los espíritus inmundos, y lo obedecen ".

Cuando rezas el "Padre Nuestro", oras "... y líbranos del mal". A esta petición a veces agrego:

"y no quites de mí tu espíritu santo; crea en mí un corazón limpio y renueva un espíritu

correcto dentro de mí. Devuélveme el gozo de tu salvación ".

Cuando ores "líbranos del mal", deberías incluir, "de todo pensamiento maligno, de todo

malvado deseo y de toda palabra malvada". Tómate un tiempo y saca todo; cualquier mal

que acecha en la puerta de tu corazón. Luego, cayendo sobre los talones de ese corazón

buscando y orando, me gusta orar, "O, mi Jesús, perdona mis pecados. Sálvame de los fuegos

del infierno. Dirige todas las almas al cielo, especialmente aquellas que más necesitan tu

misericordia. Y luego me gusta terminar de rezar tres veces: "Señor, Jesucristo, Hijo del Dios viviente, ten piedad de mí, un pecador, Amén".

Como el Evangelio nos recuerda, Jesús actúa con fortaleza, con una autoridad nunca antes

vista, impasible ante la presencia del maligno. Mira, el espíritu inmundo no dudó quién es

Jesús: "Sé quién eres, el Santo de Dios". Y no debes dudar de quién es Jesús. Por la mera

mención de Su Santo Nombre, los demonios se estremecen y confiesan que Él es el Hijo de

Dios.

Al reflexionar sobre la ayuda de Jesús a esta pobre alma y al espíritu inmundo, ¿no les

recuerda que fue Jesús quien vino a destruir la obra del diablo? ¿Cómo fue que fue ungido

por el Espíritu Santo y fue a todas partes haciendo el bien y sanando a todos los que fueron

retenidos de alguna manera por el poder del mal? (1 Juan 3: 8; Hechos 10:38)

¡Qué poderoso Salvador es Jesús! Es Jesús acerca de quien habla Moisés, que hablará con

autoridad. De su boca vendrá la Palabra del Señor y aquellos que NO escuchen responderán

por ella. Son como la persona que construyó su casa en la arena y los vientos y la lluvia

golpearon contra su nueva casa. Y cayó, porque fue construido sobre arena. Tales son los

que prefieren las palabras de los adivinos y los oráculos malvados, como las cartas del tarot,

la tabla uija, la santería, Brujeria y Leer su Mano. Satanás es engañoso, tratando de aparecer

como un ángel de luz. (2 Corintios 11:14)

Muchos son los que testifican que el poderoso poder y la autoridad de Jesús los libera de la

trampa del diablo. Y no nos olvidemos de las personas en la sinagoga que fueron de las

primeras que entendieron y exclamaron: "Con autoridad manda incluso a los espíritus

inmundos, y le obedecen".

Dear Church, When we welcome a New Year, we enter into a renewed rhythm of God’s redeeming love. In two short weeks, this rhythm will lead us to the Season of Lent and the drama of Love. In Jesus’ life, and in that of the Hebrew people, the Covenant with Noah points to the promised New Covenant in Jeremiah; the test of Abraham is an image of Jesus’ temptation in the desert; the fulfillment of the 10 commandments is the basis for the cleansing of the Temple; and the deliverance by “King Cyrus is points to Jesus,” the new Moses, who will liberate us into a new life when He is “lifted up”. So, to begin with “Jesus knows that His sacrifice will give glory to God and mean life for his people.” The rhythm of promise, struggle and fulfillment is at the heart of what it means to be human, and at the very heart of what we do with and for our children at St. John Chrysostom Parochial School. We celebrate His promises at our school when the children become altar servers, lectors, gift bearers, choir members, ushers, or prayer leaders. We celebrate these when teachers correct poor behavior or spends time with a sad, lonely student. We rejoice when the little ones sing and dance as much as we counsel 8th graders and parents with life changing decisions. And although love does not make school work easy for the students, their parents, or their teachers, it does make learning a challenging, joy-filled experience. On the mountaintop, Peter said to Jesus and his two friends, “It is good that we are here,” and integrating the 3 Rs of the grade school curriculum into the minds of our children. It is good that we - the priests, principal, sisters, teachers, staff, crossing guard, and volunteers - are here. And it is good that the children are here. Inspired by the Spirit, the faculty enables our young disciples to appreciate every subject as equipping them for the challenges of this life. Of course, this life also requires good, Christian hearts. In the midst of daily challenges, of poverty, of messages that state these children cannot - and will not - succeed, the faculty and staff confided in the power of Divine Love to redeem all our hopes. Life is precious. The years within St. John Chrysostom School are precious. God has multiplied countless acts of love in ways we could never have imagined. That is why we celebrate Catholic Schools Week; this is why we celebrate St. John Chrysostom School. God bless you all! May God order our steps and bless the work of our hands!

Querida Iglesia,

Cuando damos la bienvenida a un Año Nuevo, entramos en un ritmo renovado del amor

redentor de Dios. En dos cortas semanas, este ritmo nos llevará a la Temporada de la

Cuaresma y al drama del Amor.

En la vida de Jesús, y en la del pueblo hebreo, el Pacto con Noé señala el Nuevo Pacto

prometido en Jeremías; la prueba de Abraham es una imagen de la tentación de Jesús en el

desierto; el cumplimiento de los 10 mandamientos es la base para la limpieza del Templo; y

la liberación del “Rey Ciro” apunta a Jesús, el nuevo Moisés, quien nos liberará a una nueva

vida cuando sea "levantado".

Entonces para empezar, Jesús sabe que su sacrificio dará gloria a Dios y significará vida para

su pueblo. El ritmo de la promesa, la lucha y la realización está en el corazón de lo que

significa ser humano, y en el corazón mismo de lo que hacemos con y para nuestros hijos en

la Escuela Parroquial San Juan Crisóstomo.

Celebramos Sus promesas en nuestra escuela cuando los niños se convierten en monaguillos,

lectores, portadores de regalos, miembros del coro, ujieres o líderes de oración. Celebramos

esto cuando los maestros corrigen el mal comportamiento o pasan tiempo con un estudiante

triste y solitario. Nos regocijamos cuando los más pequeños cantan y bailan tanto como

aconsejamos a los alumnos de 8º y los padres con decisiones que cambian la vida.

Y aunque el amor no hace que el trabajo escolar sea fácil para los estudiantes, sus padres o

sus maestros, hacen que el aprendizaje sea una experiencia desafiante y lleno de alegría.

En la cima de la montaña, Pedro le dijo a Jesús y a sus dos amigos: "Está bien que estemos

aquí", y la integración de los 3 R del currículo de la escuela primaria en las mentes de

nuestros niños. Es bueno que nosotros, los sacerdotes, el director, las hermanas, los

maestros, el personal, el guardia de cruce y los voluntarios, estemos aquí. Y es bueno que los

niños estén aquí. Inspirados por el Espíritu, la facultad permite a nuestros jóvenes discípulos

apreciar cada tema como equiparlos para los desafíos de esta vida.

Por supuesto, esta vida también requiere un buen corazón cristiano. En medio de los

desafíos cotidianos, de la pobreza, de los mensajes que afirman que estos niños no pueden y

no tendrán éxito, la facultad y el personal confiaron en el poder del Amor Divino para

redimir todas nuestras esperanzas.

La vida es preciosa. Los años dentro de la Escuela San Juan Crisóstomo son preciosos.

Dios ha multiplicado innumerables actos de amor en formas que nunca hubiéramos podido

imaginar. Es por eso que celebramos la Semana de las Escuelas Católicas; esta es la razón

por la que celebramos la escuela de San Juan Crisóstomo.

¡Dios los bendiga a todos! ¡Que Dios ordene nuestros pasos y bendiga el trabajo de nuestras

manos!

LENT begins on Ash Wednesday, but before we get to Ash Wednesday, we should start asking ourselves some questions and we should start with some preparations. “What does God want to give me this year?” This question may require that I slow down a bit and listen to my inner spirit. For example, even if I’m very busy, I realize I’m hungry when I hear my stomach start “growling.” ‘What am I going to be doing on Ash Wednesday?” Too often, Ash Wednesday is like every other day, except that I manage to get to church and get ashes on my forehead. Is there anything else I can do on Ash Wednesday? How will fasting and abstaining happen for me, for my family on that special day?

We can give God more of a space to touch our hearts if we begin to establish some simple patterns. We could wake up each morning, and for something like a half a minute to a minute, stand by the edge of our beds, and just ask the Lord for the grace to let this day be one in which I long for the beginning of Lent. Perhaps we need to ask for specific helps or graces to get ready to begin Lent. Whatever we try to say, our Lord can understand the Spirit trying to speak through our simple words. And all it takes is the time to find and put on our slippers. And each night, in the days ahead, we can practice giving thanks to God before I go to bed. This simple pattern, in the morning and evening can stir our spirits to look forward to and prepare for Lent, as a season of grace.

+ + + LA CUARESMA comienza el Miércoles de Ceniza, pero antes de llegar al Miércoles de Ceniza, debemos

empezar a hacernos algunas preguntas y debemos comenzar con algunos preparativos. "¿Qué quiere Dios

darme este año?" Esta pregunta puede requerir que me detenga un poco y escuche mi espíritu interior. Por

ejemplo, incluso si estoy muy ocupado, me doy cuenta que tengo hambre cuando oigo que mi estómago

empieza a gruñir. "¿Qué voy a hacer el Miércoles de Ceniza?" Con demasiada frecuencia, el Miércoles de

Ceniza es como cualquier otro día , excepto que logro llegar a la iglesia y obtener cenizas en mi frente.

¿Hay algo más que pueda hacer el Miércoles de Ceniza? ¿Cómo ocurrirá el ayuno y la abstinencia para mí,

y para mi familia en ese día tan especial?

Podemos darle a Dios más espacio para tocar nuestros corazones si comenzamos a establecer unos patrones

simples. Podemos despertar cada mañana, y por algo así como un medio minuto o un minuto, estar al borde

de nuestras camas, y sólo pedir al Señor la gracia de dejar que este día sea uno en el que anhelo el

comienzo de la Cuaresma. Tal vez, tengamos que pedir ayuda o gracias específicas para prepararnos para

comenzar la Cuaresma. Todo lo que tratemos de decir, nuestro Señor puede entender al Espíritu tratando de

hablar a través de nuestras sencillas palabras. Y todo lo que se necesita es el tiempo para encontrar y poner

nuestras zapatillas. Y cada noche, en los días venideros, podemos practicar dando gracias a Dios antes de

irse a la cama. Esta simple practica, por la mañana y por la noche, puede animar nuestro espíritu a esperar y

prepararse para la Cuaresma, como una temporada de gracia.
