School builder to cover district costsConstruction delaysGrant [email protected]

The builders of the Fraser River Middle School will compensate the New Westminster school district for the postponement of its opening by a year.

Superintendent/CEO John Gaiptman said the compensation will pay for the district having to extend its office lease at Columbia Square by eight months.

The initial plan was for the school, being built on the former site of John Robson elementary, to open September 2015.

But the board of education decided last week to hold off for a year because construction wasn’t proceeding to plan.

The district also determined opening it during the school year was not practical.

The project also includes building a new board office next to the school.

The Columbia Square lease, which costs the district $700,000 a year, was to expire Oct. 31.

The compensation allows that lease to be extended to June 30, said Gaiptman.

LET ME COUNT THE WAYSJanuary 20 - March 20

A group exhibition that features a diverse cross-section of the countless facets of love, that most potent and enduring of human emotions.

The opening line of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s famous sonnet is a mere stepping stone into this greater exploration of amour and its myriad forms – from the tenderness of a mother’s embrace to the whimsical, romantic and symbolic sides of love.

Expressed through an array of media, including painting, drawing, photography and textiles, this exhibition exemplifi es how and why the innumerable and powerful manifestations of love can deeply move and inspire us most, becoming catalysts for creative artistic expression. Come and count the ways through the eyes of these 14 artists.

There were so many locks on the bridge’s rails, part of the parapet collapsed.

Bridges in Rome, Dublin, Cologne and Florence have also been adorned with love locks, to varying degrees of dismay from local officials.

In 2013 the City of Vancouver removed a number of love locks that had been affixed to fencing on the Burrard Bridge.

Ito said he made overtures to the City of New West to get their blessing but made little headway.

Some local businesses he approached love the idea, even offered advice to use social media to get the word out.

Ito’s started Twitter, Facebook and Instagram accounts in hopes of sparking others to think about adding their own love locks to the fence this Valentine’s Day.

He said he hopes the idea will grow organically, and take on a life of its own.

Just like real love.

• New West’s love locks have their own Twitter account at twitter.com/quaydelamour

Before making the postponement official, the district went to Yellowridge Design Build, the project’s contractor, seeking the compensation. Gaiptman said the district didn’t want the delay to add any costs to a district already burdened with repaying an accumulated budget shortfall of nearly $5 million.

“We needed the construction company to understand there was a cost involved in delaying the project,” said Gaiptman. “We wanted to make sure we were not creating a debt for the school district by continuing the

lease when there would be a cost to the district. That’s why [the postponement] had to be cost neutral.”

Gaiptman said Yellowbridge and its subcontractors will likely save money by not having to pay as much overtime to meet the original tight deadline.

New Westminster’s adult continuing education and alternate programs are also run out of Columbia Square. Gaiptman said when the district administration moves into its new offices, space for those programs will be found within the district.

“It might be in a building

or portables. There’s lots of discussions happening,” he said.

Fraser River Middle School is meant to house about 500 students from grades 6 to 8. It will relieve over capacity issues at schools on the city’s west side. But the postponement means Qayqayt, Lord Tweedsmuir, Kelvin and Connaught Heights elementaries will continue to teach Grade 6 and 7 students, with Grade 8s going to New Westminster secondary.

It will be the district’s third middle school, the others being Glenbrook and Queensborough.

Claude Dettloff’s Wait for Me Daddy photograph has inspired a statue, a stamp and a coin.

Now it has its own nine-minute orchestral composition.

New Westminster composer Brian Garbet, who’s currently a composer-in-residence at the University of Calgary where he’s studying for his PhD, will premiere his latest piece, based on the famous Second World War photo of a young boy reaching out to his father as his regiment marches down Eighth Street on their way to board a troop ship on the waterfront.

The composition will be played by the 40-member University of Calgary Wind Ensemble on Thursday at the opening concert of the school’s Forms of Sound Festival.

Garbet, who’s scored music for independent short films and documentaries, said the creation of something with an “extra-musical” narrative is in the spirit of the classical art music tradition.

He’d previously written pieces that pay tribute to fallen political leaders, paintings and current affairs.

He said he’d long wanted

to write a piece of music for Dettloff’s photo.

“The photograph always resonated with me,” said Garbet, who lost two relatives among many from his family who served with the military in WWII.

“There’s so much going on between the mother, the boy, and the father in the foreground. There’s so much depth to this image, it’s almost as if it was composed yet it was a chance moment.”

When Garbet was assigned to the wind ensemble that includes six percussionists instead of a strings section, he knew it was time to realize his inspiration.

“I wanted the drums to represent the soldiers and war,”

said Garbet. “To deliver what I had

envisioned it had to be big and bombastic. Since I had access to six (percussionists) I decided to take full advantage and put them all to good use.”

Garbet said he studied the photo intensely, and researched the background of its circumstance.

For instance, he learned the regiment marched at 120 beats per minute.

“This photograph is so musical on so many levels, if one is open to it,” said Garbet.

The nine-minute composition is comprised of three continuous sections.

The quieter opening is driven by three snare drums in the background that get louder to represent the ranks of soldiers getting closer.

That leads to a dream-like middle section before a full, energetic finale.

Garbet said he got a chance to see the Wait for Me Daddy statue in Hyack Square when he was home at Christmas break.

He said it would be a “fantastic experience” to hear his composition played in the square or across the street at the Anvil Centre.

Coming in from the coldSeniors Services Society to hold night walk to raise funds for homeless outreach workGrant [email protected]

With government funding dwindling, Seniors Services Society (SSS) is hitting the streets of New West on Feb. 21 to help keep seniors from being homeless.

It’s called the Coldest Night of the Year, the brainchild of Blue Sea Philanthropy, a non-profit that helps fundraise for charities focusing on organizations battling homelessness and hunger, said SSS interim executive director Brian Dodd.

Blue Sea came up with the Coldest Night walk idea a few years ago, and has been building the annual event across the country ever since. It didn’t have a location in the Lower Mainland and called SSS to see if it was interested. With the federal government focusing on its Housing First strategy, SSS was struggling to find funds and recently had to lay off an outreach worker.

“We saw a need for sustainable funding for our homeless outreach programs and this sounded like a really good tie,” said Dodd. “The amount of seniors without a roof over their head is growing and the amount of funding for those seniors who are homeless for the first time or about to be homeless is falling.

“The needs of seniors are unique. They get to retirement age and some of them say I don’t have enough resources to see me through.”

Dodd said Blue Sea has such a great track record elsewhere, it didn’t have to

do much convincing. Eighty organizations are expected to take part this year.

“It’s remarkable what this walk has been able to do in large centres and small centres all across the country,” Dodd said.

Last year, the Coldest Night even raised over $2.5 million dollars in partnership with 63 charities across Canada.

SSS board chair Marg McKee said the beauty of the Blue Sea proposal is it provides the society with a proven template for fundraising and they don’t have to create one of their own.

GRANT GRANGER/NEWSLEADERSeniors Services Society’s Brian Dodd and board chair Marg McKee are gearing up for the first Coldest Night of the Year fundraising walk at the River Market on Feb. 21.

In the last couple of days, close to $3 million has been donated to the creators of the Exploding Kittens card game. In the time it took me to write this column, the total increased by about $100,000.

Welcome to the world of crowdfunding, a red-hot online phenomenon that is revolutionizing the way individuals and organizations gain access to “free” money, for anything from a pizza recipe to cancer treatment ... to a deck of bizarre humour playing cards.

For the uninitiated, the concept might seem more than a bit far-fetched: Come up with an idea that requires funding. Design a simple campaign explaining what it’s about. Place it on an Internet platform. Wait for the money to roll in.

Pretty off the wall, right?According to Wikipedia, in

2013, the crowdfunding industry generated more than $5 billion worldwide.

That figure was bound to be far surpassed last year.

There are dozens of crowdfunding providers out there, with some of the largest

being GoFundMe, Kickstarter and FundRazr, which has partnered with Black Press to create BlackPress4Good.com.

FundRazr, based in Vancouver, has helped raise over $52 million from over 45,000 campaigns in 37 different countries around the world.

This week, I had an interesting chat with a communications person working for a major fundraising initiative who, of course, was looking to get media exposure for an iconic fundraiser.

We talked about the countless worthy causes that are out there, and people’s capacity to absorb and respond generously to yet another story of a family in need, or a sick child requiring special medical treatment.

She acknowledged the difficulty of appealing for funding in this intensely crowded

field, especially in the climate of a challenged economy.

Fundraising agencies know full well the key factor of “donor fatigue,” which is when the requests for funding simply overwhelms the pool of contributors.

She observed that organized fundraising is becoming increasingly “fractured,” with the emergence of more and more charitable causes and campaigns, all seeking public attention and support.

And into this heartfelt melee comes the Internet and crowdfunding – representing a light-year leap from local, regional or even global appeals by major agencies such as Red Cross, to any single project or cause that can tap into the worldwide online audience.

There is no question that a tremendous amount of good is being done via online fundraising. Kids are getting medical help. Families are helped through the trauma and loss caused by fires and other catastrophes. Young people get a boost in their post-secondary education endeavours.

Locally, several campaigns are seeing success, including a wildlife rehabilitation centre that has generated thousands to help injured creatures.

The variety of online donating opportunities is utterly vast. And they are all dipping into a pool of available cash – albeit made fantastically larger and more complex by the global digital diaspora.

The crowdfunding phenomenon is heavily fuelled by social media, an environment in which there are few rules, and the ones that do exist can change tomorrow. And in among all those laudable causes and campaigns and appeals for cash are quirky investment projects, such as a card game featuring exploding kittens, that can go viral in hours, generating millions of dollars for a few guys who are probably right now looking at their computer screens, watching something unfold beyond their wildest dreams.

And ours.

Millions for a cause, or card game

Terrorism is on the minds of many people these days, given recent events in France.

Canada is not immune to the challenges posed by terrorists, with ISIS specifically naming Canada as a target.

The organization, which holds parts of Iraq and Syria and continues to engage in brutal attacks on innocent people, is under attack by Canada and many other allied nations.

Many Canadians felt immune from terrorism until the attacks on Canadian Forces members in Ottawa and Quebec last fall. While the people involved in both of those cases apparently acted on their own – and at least one was suffering from mental illness – the attacks shook many Canadians.

The federal government is ready and willing to boost surveillance of potential “radicalized” individuals, and its moves in this area will be supported by a large majority of citizens.

Unfortunately, there is no way to guarantee that. The world is a much smaller place, with air travel to almost any place easily available, and social media used extensively to shape and change peoples’ attitudes.

Some people suggest that all terrorists belong to one specific religious group and feel that the root of the problem is that particular religion. This is a very narrow-minded and clearly wrong-headed approach to take. The fact is that there are people of many different ethnic and religious backgrounds who feel they need to take their grievances and explode them on the world stage. Some are born and raised elsewhere; some are homegrown.

Our leaders have no easy task. They must determine effective ways to combat terrorist threats, balancing the need to retain public freedoms.

And we members of the public must educate ourselves, so that we do not create the kind of terror we hope to eradicate.

COMMENTWalk in our shoes firstRe: Shut up about traffic – or move (Letters, Jan. 21)

When I moved to Royal Avenue 15-plus years ago, there was a fire station at the corner of Royal Avenue and Eighth Street, and St. Mary’s Hospital on Royal Avenue.

I knew that there would be fire trucks and ambulances sirens on Royal Avenue.

There were also some trucks because, at that time, they could still use the Port Mann Bridge.

I knew about these and was OK with it.

By the way, I also lived by Lougheed Highway where there was heavy traffic. I knew about the noise from the traffic and did not complain.

After the tolling of the Port Mann Bridge, traffic and pollution increased tremendously.

The noise from the sirens from the Glenbrook Fire Hall and noise from the bus stop do not happen continuously every day Monday to Sunday from morning to afternoon— truck traffic on Royal Avenue does.

So, Mr. Fisher, why don’t you move to Royal Avenue and experience first-hand the noise and pollution we are experiencing.

Why don’t you walk in our shoes? Experience is the best teacher.

How would you like to be told to move out of your home? This is our home and we will be fighting for it.

Wouldn’t you do the same to protect your home for you and your loved ones?

LET’S SEE POLITICAL COURAGE

Re: Transit referendum forum on Tuesday

What are we doing and trying to achieve?

I certainly agree with a forum on “building community relationships” but setting out strategic plans to ensure a “yes” vote in the upcoming referendum is a pure

waste of time, energy and money.

Is this a means to justify the end?

This is a non-binding referendum so if the “no” vote wins we could still have the .5 per cent PST increase levied upon us.

As a comparison, there was less of a push in the binding referendum on the HST.

It really appears that our elected officials are very reluctant in making decisions that will cause the ire of voters. Yet, we do elect these people to represent us and make financial decisions for the betterment of the province, Lower Mainland and individual cities and municipalities.

Please get on with your responsibilities and stop costing more waste of tax dollars.

This also means cleaning up Crown corporations and the wasteful spending by the provincial government, cities and municipalities.

By doing so, we could probably find the $250 million dollars a year to fund TransLink.

The New Westminster Chamber of Commerce is a vital link to the local business community. We’ve enjoyed being members for many years, and there’s no better way to promote your business, and stay connected with other entrepreneurs. We love this city, and the Chamber has helped us grow our business in the “new” New West.

Gary Pooni, Brook Pooni Associates Inc.

My community is important to me. I joined the Chamber of Commerce as I wanted to connect with like-minded business owners in my community of New Westminster and to be in the know, so to speak.

Along with being associated with a credible and relevant business association, I have met a great number of business owners and have made

some wonderful connections. My need for connecting to my community has been met, and my business has had great exposure since joining the Chamber of Commerce.

Karen Laskey, Laskey Counselling & Hypnotherapy

“Having had exposure and experience with a few other Chambers of Commerce in different municipalities of the Lower Mainland, it is noteworthy to see the strength, synergy, support and camaraderie amongst business owners and members of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce. It is something to be proud of, as this chapter is doing something right!”

Dr. Pavan Avinashi, Vision Source

Charlie’s Petspa and all the businesses along Carnarvon Street had an issue with parking during the construction of Plaza 88 towers and Shops New West. The bus stop was put right in front of my dog daycare business. This made it very dif cult for our customers to drop off and pick up their dogs. It also made it very challenging for dog walkers to get through the crowd of people waiting for the bus.

The Chamber really stepped up to the plate and communicated the issue to City Hall. They played a big role in getting our parking situation xed on the 800 block of Carnarvon Street.

Now we have a loading zone in front as well at metered parking and the community and our customers are thrilled. Thank you for being a great resource for business in our Community.

Even though Matt Seymour flew almost 7,000 kilometres last week he was still flying high as he attended classes at New Westminster secondary Monday.

Seymour jetted off to Athens, Ohio, to visit the campus of the University of Ohio. Before the Hyacks star offensive threat left the American Midwest college town he had been offered, and verbally accepted, a scholarship to play wide receiver for the Bobcats football team.

“It’s pretty awesome. It’s still a little bit surreal right now, but it’s awesome,” said Seymour during a break from classes Monday.

The scholarship is the result of a lot of hard work by himself and head coach Farhan Lalji. He was one of Canada’s top prospects, along with offensive line teammate Harper Sherman who already had his University of Arizona scholarship secured last summer, heading into the season.

“We’ve been working on it for a while,” said Lalji.

All of Canada’s top schools made him some form of an offer, said Lalji. Some wanted him as a receiver, others as a defensive back. But they always kept their eye on possibly finding him a place to play at a fairly high NCAA level. Last summer, along with a lot of off-season training, Seymour went to a couple of elite camps to showcase his talents to scouts.

“He’s a hard working kid, he’s a high character kid. He’s one of those guys who was such a playmaker. He had the ability to change a game instantly. He did that in a number of games,” said Lalji. “There was interest. Most schools offer early to position players, but Matt was a late bloomer, that’s why it took a little longer to get an offer.”

During his senior season he put up some big numbers. In 12 games he scored 14 touchdowns in four different ways. Seymour caught 45 passes for 769 yards (17.1 yards per catch) including nine for TDs. He was also the team’s second leading rusher with 279 yards on just 15 carries, an average of 18.6

yards, and two touchdowns. He also returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and scored another on one of three passes he intercepted on defence. Seymour was also fifth on the team with 30 tackles.

“I wanted the opportunity to play the Division 1 level badly. I knew making big plays I’d have a chance, I’d accomplish that,” said Seymour, who intends to take history and pre-law at Ohio.

Lalji has known Ohio’s defensive back

coach James Ward for 18 years, having hooked him up with a kid, Jared Friday, way back when Lalji coached at Burnaby Central.

So Seymour flew there last week to visit the campus, escorted by running back Malek Irons of Abbotsford who plays for the Bobcats. Seymour talked to head coach Frank Solich and receivers coach Dwayne Dixon. He was sold on them, and they were sold on him, offering him a scholarship to play wide receiver even though many of the schools were looking at him to play defence.

“I always hoped to get to this level, I knew I had a chance at it,” said Seymour.

Lalji said, “It surprised us because the weekend before

they got this commitment from this guy that had 15 offers, but that was at defensive back. He’s got a big time ceiling whichever side of the ball he plays.”

Both Lalji and Seymour feel he has to add about 15-20 pounds of muscle to his six-foot-one, 170-pound frame in order to compete at a higher level.

Seymour and Sherman will formally sign their scholarship offers on Feb. 4, the first day they are eligible to do so. According to Lalji, they are the only two players in the province to get NCAA Div. 1 scholarships, and NWSS is the only football program in the country to have two players heading south of the border to play pigskin.

Jr. Hyack hoopsters victorious in Surrey

The Hyack junior girls basketball squads were victorious at a tournament hosted by Surrey’s Holy Cross Crusaders on the weekend.

The juniors defeated Sullivan Heights 42-31 in Saturday’s final after beating Holy Cross 48-36 Friday.

NWSS juvenile girls came third after beating Richmond’s Cambie Crusaders 32-29 Saturday after losing to Chilliwack and Holy Cross in previous round-robin games.

Skip Kristy Lewis and her Royal City Curling Club team made it to the playoffs at the B.C. women’s championship last week, but their stay there didn’t last long.

Former world champion Kelly Scott of Kelowna disposed of Lewis 9-1 in the quarter-final game at the Golden Ears Winter Club on Saturday.

Lewis, third Jody Maskiewich, second Barb Zbeetnoff and lead Jenn Howard began the triple knockout preliminary portion of the eight-team event by downing Victoria’s Darlene Sivertson 5-3 Wednesday.

Thursday morning, however, another Victoria squad skipped by Sarah Wark defeated Lewis 7-5 dropping her down to the B event. The RCCC team then beat defending champion Kesa Van Osch of Nanaimo 9-4 before losing 10-9 to Scott. It was an unusual game in which Scott scored three in the 10th end to win after Lewis had overcome a 6-1 deficit after five ends.

Lewis then secured a C event qualifying playoff spot by downing Vancouver’s Diane Gushulak 8-6 Saturday morning before falling a second time to Scott in the evening.

Prince George’s Patti Knezevic downed Wark 5-3 in the final.

‘In most cases the folks we’re working with are lost’Although many

charities have fundraising walks they’re usually shoehorned into spring and early fall dates. The concept is for the walkers to experience what the homeless do in winter.

“It’s meant to be a family friendly event, but also to learn about feeling uncomfortable out there,” said McKee.

Dodd said Canada’s housing first strategy is a wonderful concept for dealing with street homelessness in areas like Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside, but not necessarily for seniors experiencing it for the first time or on the verge of having to deal with it.

Dodd said SSS currently has a caseload of 80 seniors, with 150 looking for assistance finding housing.

But the society doesn’t have the money and staff to help.

“We’re turning

people away, and the last thing we want is to say sorry we can’t help because you haven’t been homeless long enough,” said Dodd. “In most cases the folks we’re working with are lost.”

He said seniors become homeless or in the danger of becoming homeless because they find themselves in inappropriate situations such as living

in a shelter, discharged from hospital without a place to go, or face eviction. Dodd said SSS can give them a road map by connecting them to services and assist them in finding a place to live.

In addition to outreach providing support, the society needs dollars to help seniors with such things as moving costs, paying for the first

month’s rent or putting possessions in storage.

As of late last week, SSS had already reached 30 per cent of its goal of raising $25,000.

The Coldest Night of the Year walk has a choice of two-, five- and 10-kilometre routes for individuals and teams. It will start and finish at the River Market. Registration is at 4 p.m., with the walk between 5:15 and

8 p.m. River Market businesses will remain

open and a warm, light meal will be served

to all walkers and volunteers.
