Should I Know You?“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shallenter into the kingdom of heaven, but only theone who does the will of my Father in heaven.”

Jesus – Matthew 7:21

I was only four months into retirement when Imet a friend at the Fitness Center. As I walked outof the locker room into the café area I called himby name twice before he asked, “Should I knowyou?” When I removed my cap he knew meimmediately. We laughed about it.

It made me think … what if at the end of ourlife journey our Lord would ask, “Should I knowyou?” In the passage above, judgment falls uponthose who “talk a good game” but do not live outtheir words. Jesus is more concerned aboutour walk than our talk. Jesus said, “By theirfruits you shall know them” (Matthew 7:16).

Faith in Christ is more than saying the rightwords; it is living our words. The Christian faith ismore than saying the right thing; it is doing theright thing. What we do must be consistentwith what we believe. “Everyone who hearsthese words of mine and puts them into practiceis like a wise man who built his house on therock” (Matthew 7:24).

In another passage, Jesus says, “I am thevine; you are the branches. If a man remains inme, and I in him, he will bear much fruit.” (John15:5). Spiritual fruit is never the result of humaneffort but God’s grace. We bear fruit only byallowing Christ to live His life through us. WithoutHim we can do nothing.

If we are living in obedience to Him, we havenothing to fear. Here are some words of faith andhope: “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheepand my sheep know me” (John l0:14).

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me the sweetassurance of your saving presence in my life andhelp me to live out my faith in daily living. Amen.Peace to you, and please join us this Sunday ina church “Where Jesus’ love is lived.”

Also survivingare three daughters, Nancy (Elmer) Sabin ofMunising, Charlene (Terry) Bonnell of Otsego andKatrina (Robert) Garver of Florida; 8 grandchildren;8 great-grandchildren; her mother, Valborg Davis ofPlainwell; siblings, Sandra Beach, Lois Reinhardt,Lila McDermid, Gordon Davis and DorothyBissonette; several nieces and nephews. She wasloved and considered a mom and a grandma bymany more. Preceding her in death were adaughter, Rhonda Piper; a brother, Sterling Davis;and her father; Edward Davis. For the last 18 years Pathad worked part time for Hart’s Jewelry inPlainwell. Over the years she had also had herown income tax return business and had servedas the Gun Plain Township Treasurer for 12 years.Pat enjoyed knitting, playing golf, bridge, tennisand was a great bowler who had been theKalamazoo Area Bowling Champion. Pat had alove for her family and for all animals, especiallyher dog. Surviving are two sons, John and TalBaker both of Plainwell; her sister, Peg Roberts ofFL; her brother, Kelly Murphy of Plainwell andseveral nieces and nephews. She was precededin death by her parents and by her husband JohnA. Baker who preceded her in death in 1994.Funeral services were held Wednesday, January25th at
