From the desk of Fr. John: “ALL YOU NEED IS LOVE; LOVE IS ALL THERE IS”. “I love you” can be the most profoundly wonderful words we say and hear in life. They can significantly change our percep on of our own lives when we hear them and it may well help us to realize the profound effect we can have on someone else. As we know they are words that shouldn’t be said lightly nor taken lightly; they have deep significance and long term ramifica ons. We all grew up with the

tles of heart rending songs building us up for the expecta on that we would find the love of our lives; that we would meet that special person who would fall in love with us and we would fall in love with them. This would be the one and only person des ned for us and we would live wondrously in love for the rest of our lives. However, there were also those sobering and heartbreaking songs about unrequited love or someone else stepping in and steal-ing away the person we thought we couldn’t live without and we would be consigned to a life of loneliness and heartbreak never again to be happy. It is surprising when I think back on singing those kinds of songs with great feeling not realizing that they were about heart-break. O, the innocence of young life! There is truly only one constant, dependable, unchanging, uncondi onal love for everyone and for all me: God’s love. Yet it can be surprising that we trust it less than we trust other lesser loves. We can put more belief in other loves in our lives more than the love of God; conversely, do we put anything like the energy into loving God that we put into loving people? When we make a choice about who we think we want to be with for life do we ever think of asking input and direc ons from God who is the author of life and love and who has a plan for our lives? We might well say that if I am paying close a en on to my spiritual life then I trust that God will direct me even if I don’t ask him directly. The landscape of marriage commitment is a very scarred and wounded landscape in our me. It stretches from happy to unhap-py; from hanging in to barely tolerable; from I am so glad I did to why or how did I do this? It is a landscape li ered with failed and mis-matched love strewn all over which of course was not God’s plan for life and love. By contrast, the landscape of God’s love has been and always will be one of total commitment to his people. I write these things as a lead up to St Valen ne’s Day and the an cipa on I would do some kind of blessing at Masses on the weekend before. While this custom has been prevalent over the years I want to say that I have misgivings due to the makeup of our con-grega ons and people’s experience of rela onship and marriage. I am deeply invested as our church is in sacramental marriage and want to do whatever I can by way of blessing and encourage-ment to support our married couples. I also want to acknowledge that there many in our congrega on for whom married love has not worked out, either, because they have never found that special person in life or if they did, to their great sadness, it didn’t remain special. There is also the situa on of those who are living a single life and who are also called to love and for whom there ought to be a blessing to encourage that. I believe I fall into that category as a priest. So here is an advance alert on what I propose to do at all Masses on the weekend of February 9/10. I would like to focus on the love of God planted in the heart of all of us and the call to use it in a caring, kind and compassionate way. I will gladly pray a blessing for our married couples present. I would also like to pray a blessing for all of us who are commissioned by God to love. I will invite all who are not married or for whom marriage has not worked at this point in their lives to stand for a blessing. I will invite them to stand in the aisles so that we can extend our arms around them in blessing recognizing that they are valued members of our community. Finally I will ask the community to pray a blessing over me that I may be inspired to use my gi of love for the benefit of the community and of others. There is no doubt that companionship and partnership with another human being who we believe is invested in us; who helps us to know that we are lovable and that we can give and receive love is one of the most precious gi s that makes life fulfilling. It’s what someone once described as having God with skin on! May we all be mo vated to be God with skin on not only but especially for our own family but also for others whom we encounter. For whom can you be God with skin on any day? LOOKING AHEAD. I will be away on the weekend of Feb 16/17 and I wanted to let you know in advance what priests are coming to fill in so that you could plan accordingly to be able to join in prayer with one of our visitors. Fr. Charles Barnes SJ chaplain to the VA hospital will take the Saturday a ernoon Confessions at 3 pm and Mass at 5 pm. Fr. William Watson SJ will take both Sunday morning Masses. Many of you will remem-ber Fr. Watson as the author and presenter of Sacred Story and as you benefited from that you may want to be enriched by his presence again. “There are in the end three things that last: faith, hope and love, and the greatest of these is love”. 1Cor 13:13.

Fr. John.

Dear Wonderful Parishioners,

Happy New Year, and on behalf of all of us at St. Francis House, and the 1000 + children who received toys,

THANK YOU! Your generosity for our Christmas Toy Program was so much appreciated. The toys brought many smiles to the parent’s faces as they picked out toys for their children, and you can be sure your toys and games are bringing much joy to all of the children. Sincerely, Jeanne Duncan.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE 2019

Usually November is the time when we are asked to renew our annual stewardship commitment of treasure, reflecting upon how God has blessed us as we recommit ourselves to share a portion of our finances for the daily expenses needed for our parish. Your annual commitment is critical to the continued success of our healthy parish. Now, in January, we need your help, as we turn to our Stewardship of Treasure commitments for 2019.

As always, let your stewardship giving be your integrated, careful, intentional and grateful response to God’s generosity. Your financial gift to our parish – this place where the Eucharist is the source and summit of our faith – is an important way of bearing witness to and living out your faith in Christ. Please prayerfully consider an increase in your financial gift if you are in a position to do so, as the costs of operat-ing the parish do also increase over time.

A traditional giving goal is 10% of net household income (the biblical tithe): 5% to the parish and 5% to other charitable needs. This is a worthy and rewarding aim for all who practice stewardship.

To make this year’s stewardship renewal process easy for everyone, our plan is to “roll over” your 2018 commit-ment for 2019. So, if we don’t hear from you by the end of January, that’s what we’ll do.

If you would like to change your 2018 commitment for 2019, please complete the commitment card attached to the let-ter from Deacon Sam and return it at Mass or by mail in the return envelope provided. Extra cards are available at the doors of the church. You can also complete a card online at sacredheart.org. Your completed card lets the parish know your giving intention and helps us plan more effectively. If you have questions about your commitment, please contact Christine Kerr at the parish office, [email protected] or 425-454-9536.

May your faithful, renewed stewardship give you new meaning and great joy in your everyday lives! And may God bless you richly for your faithful response to God’s generosity.
