A LETTER FROM ARCHBISHOP AYMOND
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Pope Francis has named the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time as
Sunday of the Word of God. It is to be an annual observance
in order to help us grow in a deeper appreciation of the Sacred
Scriptures.
When we gather on Sunday or for any Mass, God speaks his
word to us through the Scriptures. Our desire is to open our ears
and our hearts to listen attentively. May I suggest that we could
more effectively do this by reading the Sunday Scriptures
before Mass in order to prepare our hearts to receive his word.
As we reflect on the importance of the Word of God in our lives,
it would be an opportunity to give some consideration to
joining a Bible study group, reading a few verses of Scripture every day or reading a book
explaining the Scriptures.
God speaks to us in many ways, but in a very unique way, through the Scriptures. By praying the
Scriptures, we will know of God’s personal love for us and his call to be disciples of Jesus.
Wishing you God’s blessings, I am
Sincerely in Christ,
Most Reverend Gregory M Almond
Archbishop of New Orleans

Our St. Joseph altar is an offering of love, labor, and sacrifice. It is lovingly prepared honoring St. Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus and husband to Mary. We are expecting approximately 2,800-3,000 visitors to our altar this year, therefore, our Cookie Committee is planning to make over 25,000 cookies. Cookie Making and other activities have already begun - please pick up a Schedule of Events (copies are located in the church hallways), and join us on those scheduled dates/times. Even if your schedule only allows you a little time, your help is still greatly appreciated. Snacks, coffee, and water will be provided, along with fun and fellowship! Keep watching our St. Joseph's Altar Corner of the Parish bulletin to learn more about why you will want to become involved in our St. Joseph's Altar Ministry here at St. Angela Merici! If you have any questions, please contact Janet Cruppi at 504-338-2957, or Renee Lauland at 504-371-2101. Did you know… The custom of St. Joseph Altars was originated in Sicily many centuries ago and was brought to New Orleans by Sicilian immigrants. During a period of severe drought and famine the people turned to St. Joseph asking for his intercession. When their prayers were answered, they made offerings to St. Joseph of their most prized possessions – food.

Saint of the Week SAINT ANGELA MERICI Our Patron Saint (c. 1474-1540) Feast Day: January 27 Born in Northern Italy, orphaned in childhood, Angela Merici faced a society in which education was largely the privilege of wealthy young men and based primarily in monastic schools. This reality shaped Angela’s insightful conviction that society’s disorder was caused by disorder in the home, and a lack of model Christian mothers the result of neglecting the education of young women. Transform the Christian family by placing an educated wife and mother at its heart, Angela believed, and the whole world would be renewed in Christ! So she gathered a small group of unmarried women, many of them Franciscan Tertiaries (lay affiliates) like herself, and set out to educate poor girls, free of charge, in their homes. She and her band of teachers called themselves companions, pioneering a new form of non-cloistered religious life for women, bearing witness to evangelical simplicity in the midst of the world, not as a formal “order” but as the Company (compagnia) of Saint Ursula. Known today as the Ursulines, Angela Merici’s spiritual daughters continue serving the Church and society in a rich diversity of ministries. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
