A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE

It must have been difficult for Zebedee to watch his sons walk away and follow Jesus. It was the end of ‘Zebedee and Sons Fishing, Inc.’ Our children were never ours. They are only on loan to us. We raise them to let them go.

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10 Jonah set out for Nineveh as God asked and told the people that their city would be destroyed in forty days. The people believed him and repented from their evil ways. God did not destroy their city, showing his mercy for those who see the evil of their ways and correct it. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 Paul advises the Corinthians that their world is changing, so they should not take their daily trials too seriously. We should remember that the problems of everyday living will not last forever, but the eternal life God promises us will. Gospel: Mark 1:14-20 Jesus observes Simon and Andrew where they are fishing and tells them to come with him and become “fishers of men.” They abandon their nets without hesitation to follow him. Next he calls James and his brother John, who also leave what they are doing and follow him without question.

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time January 18, 2015

“John was standing with two of his disciples, and as he watched Jesus walk by he said: ‘Behold the Lamb of God.’ The two disciples heard what he said and followed Jesus. Jesus turned and saw them following him and said to them ‘What are you looking for?’ They said to him, ‘Rabbi…where are you staying?’ He said to them, ‘Come, and you will see.’

Did you notice that John’s comment caused the disciples to leave him and begin their journey with Jesus? Did you notice that the response of Jesus caused Andrew to follow Him and then go and search out his brother Simon. Did you notice that at his meeting with Jesus change took place, a change of name and heart? There are several accounts of the meeting of the apostles with Jesus, and His invitation to stay with Him, become His disciple and eventually accept the role of ‘fishers’ of other people. All seem to reflect a meeting of curious yet seeking people. Each seems to be based on words of other people, as John or Andrew. Each results with a change of heart and discipleship. Our Sunday gathering is no different. We come looking, and as Jesus asks us ‘what for’ we might answer differently. My family, forgiveness, peace, or even ‘what you want me to do.’ Join with the first disciples of Jesus and seriously consider the many needs that beset us, and the many ways the Lord wants us to respond to His needs. This week reflect on the words” ‘Come and you will see.’

In this Sunday’s Gospel, we hear that Jesus’ first disciples suddenly changed their plans when Jesus called them to follow Him. He said to the fishermen, “Come after me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Simon, Andrew, James, and John quickly decided to follow Jesus! They immediately abandoned their fishing nets and chose to become His disciples in order to build the Kingdom of God! There must have been something very special about Jesus to make the fishermen change their priorities so quickly. When Jesus called to them, they answered His invitation. Jesus invites all of us to follow Him and calls us to build His Kingdom of Peace, Joy, Mercy and Love!

CHILDREN’S OFFERTORY ENVELOPES!

Thanks so much to all of our students who bring their envelopes to Mass each week! It is wonderful to read all of the great gifts of time well spent, helping at

home and doing good deeds - and the many talents being pursued - dancing, sports, and music. Our parish is blessed by the many ways our students recognize the treasures in their lives, especially all that God has given us - our Families, Friends, and the Gift of Christ’s Love!

Let us pray…

Dear God, as followers of Jesus help us to be good fishers of men. Help us show your love by our words and by our actions so that many people would be brought into your Kingdom. We are called to show love and care to other people. We can tell them about Jesus and his wonderful love. We can pray for them and we can invite them here to church where they can experience some of the love and joy of the family of God. With the help of Your Holy Spirit, make us good fishers of men - and women and children, too!

In the Name of Jesus, we pray. Amen!
