If you were at our early service this Sunday you probably noticed Jim Cryan, who recently placed membership with the church here with his wife Elizabeth, videoing our worship service. We’re going to begin “broadcasting” our worship services on our website. As I write this, we’re still experiencing technical difficulties, but when we’ve gotten those worked out and have learned how to be more efficient in editing and production, we hope to have it available on the Sunday of the worship itself. Having said this, of course, it is important to point out that putting it on the web is mainly for the sick, the stuck (snowed in or something), or the seeking. It isn’t intended to be a substitute for worship attendance; it is, in fact, just a weak shadow of what God has in mind for us in a physical assembly. Jim also has in mind to, in time, share this with local community cable broadcast stations in our region (southern NH and northern MA) for additional broadcast of our services to those who haven’t found our website yet. So, point friends and relatives to our website, and tell them about our WorshipLink; so that they can get a taste of God’s word and Biblically sound worship. Hopefully, with God’s blessing, they may be encouraged to a greater interest and become New Testament Christians, too. Last week, of course, our sermon lesson was out of John 19, the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews; and we finished with the question: “Who is your king?” This week we’ll be in John 20, the story of the resurrection, the marvelous proof that Jesus’ death on the cross was truly meaningful. But Jesus’ closest disciples, all have a rather odd (from our 21 st century perspective) response to the news of the empty tomb. But what would you have thought? And what can their initial doubt about the resurrection of the Lord do for our faith? Sunday evening at the building, we’ll be beginning a sermon study of 2 Timothy; we’ll be in chapter 1. Read up on it ahead of time; you’ll always get more out of it that way!

It isn’t intended to be a substitute for worship attendance; it is, in fact, just a

weak shadow of what God has in mind for us in a physical assembly.

Last week, of course, our sermon lesson was out of John 19, the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews; and we finished with the question: “Who is your king?”

This week we’ll be in John 20, the story of the resurrection, the marvelous proof that Jesus’ death on the cross was truly meaningful. But Jesus’ closest disciples, all have a rather odd (from our 21st century

perspective) response to the news of the empty tomb.

Our FamilyOur FamilyComing up in January...

Attention teens There will be a devotional at the Apgars, Friday, January 30th at 7:00. After the devo there will be a special project to work on. Girls please bring snacks and guys bring drinks. Any questions, see Ryan.

What else?

Prayers needed Doctors have found that Doreen has an infection in her blood. She is back on 100% oxygen. They have started her on more antibiotics. Please keep her in your prayers. Although her blood pressure is doing good, there is some pain medication she usually takes she can't have for fear it will lower her blood pressure.

Shut-ins There is a sign-up sheet posted on the bulletin board for those who would like to take the Lord's supper to the shut-ins. There are still many

months open and available.

FYI Here is the new address for Fernando & Kelly Moreno: 2021 Highridge Drive, Apt #16-B, Huntsville, AL 35802.

Cancellation policy Given the nasty weather we've experienced lately, the elders and I thought it would be a good idea to remind everyone about the church's long-standing snow cancellation policy, which is that we will never officially cancel an assembly, but call upon everyone to simply use their best judgment about their own driving capabilities, their own vehicle's capabilities, and their own location's weather and road conditions.

The latest copy of the Gospel Advocate magazine is available in the foyer. Please feel free to pick one up and read the informative and uplifting articles.

This and that...

Looking ahead We will be hosting a Life Line Screening here on February 21st. In about 60-90 minutes, ultrasound technology is used to view plaque buildup in your arteries. More details are posted on a flyer on the bulletin board in the foyer.

S t a r t i n g P o i n t s f o r G r o w t h“As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever. Consider now, for the LORD has chosen you to build a house for the sanctuary; be courageous and act.” 1 Chronicles 28:9, 10, NAS95.

David was king of Israel. He had intended to build a temple for the Lord God, but because of his warrior past, God commanded that his son Solomon should build this great place of worship for God’s people. David had collected many of the materials that Solomon would need, but Solomon needed more than materials — he needed direction. So, in this passage David gave his son Solomon what he needed the most to build the Great House of God; and his directions have application to us today as we build the house of God (1 Peter 2:5) in this community.

David told Solomon to “know the God of your father”. This is, of course, pretty basic, but sadly it often happens that men get so tangled up in polls, surveys, church growth studies, and marketing to build up great numbers that they forget to know God. And forgetting to know God, they focus on pleasing men to “pull in the numbers”. Building a house for God starts with the right focus — on God, on knowing Him, and on pleasing Him rather than man. Any other focus may attract big numbers, but will fail sadly to be truly a house of God.

David also told Solomon, “…serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind.” Half-

hearted, lukewarm efforts will not do. Solomon could take on this mind-boggling task with an indifferent attitude, but such an attitude would possibly yield a project never completed or if completed, a so-so finished product. So also today, God has given to us the task of building His kingdom, His house, in this community. We can approach it with a whole heart and a willing mind, or we can give it a “lick and a promise” effort — half-hearted, lukewarm, hurried, and minimal. The results of a whole heart and willing mind will be marvelous for the King to behold, while the results of the lukewarm heart and grudging mind will be only so-so and unworthy of our Lord’s glory and greatness. Nothing worthwhile deserves half of our attention, half of our efforts, and half of our hearts.

David finally advises Solomon, “If you seek Him, He will let you find Him…” Another passage using this same image of building says, “Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it; …” Psalms 127:1, NAS95. Building a house worthy for the Lord is not something done solely by the hands of man. Solomon was wise, yes; his workmen were skillful, yes; but it was only in seeking God’s help and inspiration that the house became the great Temple, not only beautiful to men, but

(most importantly) beautiful to God Himself. So also with the church, the Lord’s house today: the Lord Himself — through His Gospel which has the power to save, through His Spirit which marks and strengthens us in the inner man, through the teachings and example of the Lord Jesus, and through His opening of doors and hearts — builds His house, the church. Paul said, "I planted, Apollos watered, but God was causing the growth." 1 Corinthians 3:6, NAS95. We must do our part, too, but part of our part is to seek Him.

As Solomon followed David’s counsel and guidance and built an edifice dazzling to the eye of man and (most importantly) holy the Lord God, so we can begin with these basics and build a proper house of the Lord, a church of Christ.
