President’s Corner Happy New Year! We just had a great lineup of programs at our December chapter meeting with a lively and engaged audience. We had Dave Epley from DC’s Dept. of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs and Katie Bergfeld from DC’s Dept. of Energy and Environment speak on DC’s forthcoming net‐zero energy codes and the Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS) for existing buildings, respectively. These developments will have a profound impact on DC’s built environment and it was great to get insight and feedback directly from those helping to shape these changes. We also hosted Cindy Cogil, who presented an interesting case study on radiant heating and cooling. As a Past Presidents’ Night, we were also happy to recognize the service of a number of former chapter leaders in attendance.
Looking forward, our next chapter meeting will be on Wednesday, February 19th at the Hilton Arlington. This will be a joint meeting with the American Society for Health Care Engineering (ASHE) and will include a presentation on Legionnaires’ disease and cooling towers by Troy Reineck and a presentation on healthcare design by Stephanie Taylor. We look forward to seeing you there!
Stay tuned to our chapter website at www.nccashrae.org to learn more about next month’s meeting and other exciting events.
Regards,
Alec Petrillo‐Groh President, National Capital Chapter, 2019‐2020

2020 Government Activities Event: Day on the Hill in Annapolis, January 9th
Why volunteer:
1. The legislators and their aides will be very receptive and interested in hearing what you have
to say. They really appreciate volunteers taking time out of their day to talk with them and offer
ASHRAE as a future resource. It is also refreshing to have volunteers visit as opposed to paid
visitors (i.e. lobbying). We will be there as advocates, not lobbyists.
2. You will help spread ASHRAE influence and advance their goals.
3. You will likely find it a rewarding experience. It will be interesting to see MD government in
action.
4. The more people that attend the bigger the impact we will have.
5. Brush up on presentation skills and networking.
6. You will be working with other Baltimore Chapter, DC Chapter, and Society volunteers.
Agenda:
7:00 am (to be confirmed) Meet at House Office Building. 6 Bladen St, Annapolis, MD 21401
7:00 – 7:30 Hand out literature to volunteers (brief orientation to volunteers)
8:00 – 11:30 Volunteers Meet and Greet with Legislators (groups of 2‐3 volunteers)
12:00 – 12:30 Wrap up meeting / photo

Since 1919, ASHRAE has supported research to improve the quality of life. ASHRAE Research impacts the
industry by improving the way HVAC&R systems work, how they are applied and allow development of
technical information to create standards and guidelines, which serve as the basis for testing and design
practices around the world.
This research is not possible without the generous donations of individuals and companies alike. The
National Capital Chapter would like to extend its thanks and gratitude to the following members and
companies for their donations over the past year. A special thanks to Mr. Paul Chen‐Pon Tseng for being
our biggest individual donor. To date, we have raised $10,004 towards our 2020 RP goal of $36,550.

LeaDRS
LeaDRS is an ASHRAE regional program that encourages the development of future regional and Society
leaders. Similar to YEA’s Leadership U program, the LeaDRS program allows a Region to select an
ASHRAE member to shadow their Director and Regional Chair (DRC) at an ASHRAE conference. The
LeaDRS program is open to all ASHRAE members (it is not restricted to YEA members). The LeaDRS
program is run, funded, and administered by each Region.
Please review the LeaDRS program document for a complete description of the program.
If you are interested in applying for your Region’s LeaDRS program or would like more information,
