Hamiota Thrift Shop

Fay Bridge, Barb Brown and Georgina Brown retired from their volunteer positions at the Hamiota Thrift shop at the end of 2019. On December 17 people gathered at the Thrift Shop to honour them for the many, many volunteer hours that they have spent making the store such a suc-cess.

Sheila Campbell organizes 2 workers for 3 days a week, all year round. Currently there are 61 regular workers and 18 on a spare list. Others come in to sort, put out clothes, and pack up clothes at the end of the season. Volunteers look after cutting grass, building and yard maintenance, loading and transporting boxes, making deposits and book keep-ing. Volunteering is a great way to meet people and does

not need to be a big commitment. If you have some extra time, give Sheila a call at 764 – 2746 and she can sign you up.

Because of the work of all of these volunteers, donations totaling $21,050.00 were given out in 2019. Hamiota Christmas Cheer, Hamiota & District Health Centre, Hamiota Fire Department, Hamiota United Church, Mission and Service Fund, Samaritan House, Acres of Hope Food Grains Bank, STARS Foundation, Brandon Hospital Foundation, and Red Cross Disas-ter Relief Fund all benefitted.

Each spring and fall there is a complete turn over in the clothes. Just prior to that, 4 day bag sales are held. In 2019, 172 bags were sold at the spring sale and 177 bags were sold in the fall. These are sold at $3 a bag. Clothes not sold then are packed up and sent to various locations and groups. The shop is cleaned and new clothes are put out. Watch for posters in the spring.

Evie Strachan and Rosalie Beamish have agreed to take over from Fay, Barb and Georgina on the committee.

Welcome to Ryan Sheridan owner and operator of TOJO Transport Ltd.,

a new business located in Hamiota at 74 First Street North. Services include: hauling equipment, rig mats, & cattle, and renting out trash pumps.

Congratulations and we wish you all the best in your future plans.

In most of Canada, February means, “I Love to Read Month,” a time where one dedicates time to take pleasure and dig into a great book! In Hamiota, this seems to me like a perfect time as temperatures dip in to the -20’s or colder; what better way to enjoy your time than to pick up a good book, get cozy under a warm blanket and become lost in a story.

A moment for families with Pastor Orland

We are living in perilous times. The news headlines can cause anxiety for children and adults. Is it possible to find peace? In John 14:27 Jesus said “27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” In these perilous times we must build our lives upon the foundation of knowing Jesus Christ and His Word. Our lives must be built through obedi-ence and trust upon Him. When we rest in Him, our lives can find peace through God’s power and unending grace. When bad news comes turn to Him and He will give you peace that will calm a troubled soul. Philippians 4:6-7 says 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your re-quests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. This is a promise from God’s Word that can be put into practice moment by moment. Jesus doesn’t’ promise that we will never face trials or struggles, but He does say that when we trust in Him, we can find peace even in the middle of the storm. Let 2020 be a year filled with His peace.

Pastor Orland

Hamiota/Oakview Seniors

Hopefully everyone has got through the Christmas season and into the New Year with little difficulties. Winter may have been mild over Christmas but it is certainly cold now. Try to stay warm everyone and remember to dress for the conditions.

I receive requests for information on how to apply to Park and/or Lilac Residence so I will provide that information here. For Park Residence you may call Barb Cumming who takes the applications at 204 764-2175. For Lilac Residence you must see Sherri Mollard who works in the Business Office at the Hamiota Health Centre Hospital. It is the office right in Hamiota/Oakview Seniors

It is the office right in the hospital waiting room/front entrance. Her telephone number is 204 764-2412. From there the ladies will explain the process to you, if there are any suites available, size, rental fees, parking, etc. Keep in mind that both Park and Lilac are independent living accommodations suitable for singles as well as couples.

Foot clinics were busy again for December and somewhat challenging with winter weather events. If you are in need of a foot appointment, please call my office at 204 764-2658 and I can book you with our foot nurse, Bonnie Crawford.

A big thank you to Edwin Rothnie who took the seniors on a Christmas Light Tour around town. It was a warmer evening and many beautiful lights to see.

Edwin Rothnie also took a group of seniors to the Decker Colony Concert on December 27, 2019. It was a beautiful produc-tion with talented performers.

Just a reminder if anyone is in need of any mobility aids I may have some available to loan out for your use. These have been donated to the seniors’ office and include inside folding walkers, 4 wheel walkers, a 4 legged cane, regular canes, bath seats, toilet seat rails, bed rail, sock assist and so forth. I would rather see them used than sitting in my office, so please call if you think you could use something at 204 764-2658.

In closing we have lost a few more area seniors and our sympathies go out to those families dealing with these losses.
