January 2020 Season's Greetings! Students, family and friends were entertained Wednesday with the antics of Bowser and his Koopa Troopa in the festive production of Super Mario Brothers and the Stolen Gifts, directed by Mrs. Loboz. Thank-you to all of our guests who were able to join us for the matinee or evening show to spread some Christmas cheer! We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Mrs. Loboz, our 'music teacher extraordinaire' who endeavored to undertake such a huge production that genuinely engaged our K-6 students! Bravo! We would like to also thank Ainsley Brown, musical assistant and student of U of M for giving of her time to assist with the musical aspect of the production. Finally, a huge 'thank you' is extended to our staff 'elves', who crafted many evening and weekend hours making colourful props and fantastic costumes as well as all of those who assisted 'behind the scenes,' such amazing teamwork! Over the holidays, you can easily 'sneak' reading into daily activities at home. Here are some tips: Have your children read holiday cards when they are received in the mail, and let them write a message in outgoing cards. Let children read ingredients from holiday recipes while you bake together. It's a great way for them to learn measurements and temperatures too. Set aside time for kids to "show off" their new reading skills to visiting relatives. Children love being the focus of attention, and grandparents are usually more than willing to see their progress. Make special holiday readings a tradition. Find a special holiday book and have each member of the family read from it at the same time each year. Even if books do not make your child's wish list, make sure you give at least one as a gift, and encourage them to read it. Find books that focus on an interest your child has. For example if they ask for a bike, find a book on Lance Armstrong, or a children's book that includes a bicycle adventure. There are books out there to suit every interest under the sun – it just takes a little browsing. (Some suggestions reprinted from www.education.com) We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday season. See you in the New Year! Season's Greetings!

Here are some tips:

• Have your children read holiday cards when they are received in the mail, and let them write a message in outgoing cards.

• Let children read ingredients from holiday recipes while you bake together. It's a great way for them to learn measurements and temperatures too.

• Set aside time for kids to "show off" their new reading skills to visiting relatives. Children love being the focus of attention, and grandparents are usually more than willing to see their progress.

• Make special holiday readings a tradition. Find a special holiday book and have each member of the family read from it at the same time each year.

• Even if books do not make your child's wish list, make sure you give at least one as a gift, and encourage them to read it.

• Find books that focus on an interest your child has. For example if they ask for a bike, find a book on Lance Armstrong, or a children's book that includes a bicycle adventure. There are books out there to suit every interest under the sun – it just takes a little browsing.

• (Some suggestions reprinted from www.education.com) We would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a safe and enjoyable holiday season.

See you in the New Year!

Kindergarten AM - Wait Continuing our study of stories, we have read the book The Wish Tree many times this month. This is a story of a boy who sets out to find a Wish Tree so he can write his wish on it, but we never find out what his wish is. During each read we asked ourselves the question, “What would wish for?”. First,

we thought about Charles, the boy in the book, and students thought he would wish for a specific toy. Then we asked what we would wish for, and again students thought of a specific toy or pet. But, each time we read the story, we noticed new things; such as how Charles is always alone, but he still helps others. Which in the end, means they all help him when he needs it the most. At this point our wishes started changing and students began thinking deeper, inferring meaning. We began having ideas like,

“Charles wishes for a friend”, “Charles wishes for someone to help him”. Then we talked again about our wishes and now students were wishing for a friend to come visit, a friend to play with, a cousin to come over. When asked what Ms. Wait would wish for, students brainstormed:

Someone to clean up toys someone to cook for her When asked what Mom wished for, students brainstormed: Someone to do laundry

Someone to clean Someone to cook Students documented their wishes through drawing and writing, working to hear and record the first sound of their wish.

Rebekka’s wish Carter’s wish Paul’s wish

A reminder to send cutlery with your child in their lunches. The school will no longer be supplying this for students.

Student Phone Use Students will not be permitted to use the school phone if it pertains to setting up social arrangements after school or at lunch. At the end of the school day this can cause issues with the transportation department. Please try to have these plans in place before your child comes to school.

Colours! This month, while working on art work to put up for the concert, we have begun to experiment with mixing colours. Students have thoroughly enjoyed mixing colours to create new colours! We will continue to experiment with colours into the new year.

Writing This month students have taken over our daily message. The helper of the day decides what we will write about and writes down some of the familiar words or sounds they know with some assistance.

We have also started a sketch book this month where we are practicing our drawing skills by learning to add more details.

Math Students are getting really good at recognizing numbers and dots on dice. Some students are beginning to even experiment with adding another dice to their games!

Grade 1/2 Classes

This month the grade 1 and 2s have been learning about procedural writing pieces! Together we have written how to get dressed for recess, how to make hot chocolate, how to make paper snowflakes, and how to make a snowman ornament! We can't wait to see where our writing takes us next!

“Write” Before the Holidays! - 5/6 Desilets

Ste. Anne Elementary School 7

In our class we have been learning about Canada’s military involvement in social studies. We wrote post cards to veterans for Remembrance Day. In November, we did research about local military personnel who died in World War II and then we wrote historical personal narratives about their lives. In December, as an extension of this writing, we had one more special writing project related to this. We wrote holiday cards to Canadian Armed Forces Members serving abroad! Mrs. Desilets modelled writing to us so we had some ideas. She has been writing to the troops since 2007. First, we got to pick which military operations we wanted to write to. We wrote to armed forces members located in:

• Egypt • The Middle East • Japan • The Ukraine • Cyprus • Jerusalem • Kuwait • Nunavut

We wrote about life at Ste. Anne Elementary School and a little bit about ourselves. We asked them questions about their jobs, where they are stationed, and their pets! We sent the troops well wishes for the holidays! As an extra touch, we included art we drew! We learned how to address envelopes! Then we went for a walk to the post office to send off our holiday greetings around the world! We shared this project at the Middles Years’ assembly on Tuesday, December 17th. This was a great writing project for our class to do, but it was also so much more… This project reminded us about the importance of being thankful, about the excitement in spreading joy, and how little things can make a big difference in peoples’ lives! Happy Holidays from Mrs. Desilets and Grade 5/6A!

Gr. 5/6 Woytowich On December 12th and 13th, the grade 5/6 C class did a hot chocolate fundraiser! Classes signed up for a time to visit our room and receive their hot chocolate. Students were asked to bring donations for their hot chocolate. All the money went towards the Children’s Hospital Foundation of Manitoba. To

prepare for the fundraiser, our class wrote letters to Mr. St. Vincent and Mrs. Mykytyn to persuade them to let us do the fundraiser. Once we had the go-ahead, our class made a shopping list that Mrs. Woytowich took to Costco to get ingredients. A small group of students in our class worked with Ms. Devisser to create charts for the K-2 students that showed them the steps to get their hot chocolate! We also wrote letters to a staff member of the Children’s Hospital Foundation explaining what we did

and how we hope our donations will help sick children and their families. In total, we raised $157.70 for the Children’s Hospital. Thank you everyone for your generous donations! We hope everyone enjoyed the hot chocolate! Have a safe and happy holiday season! Written by Tyler Graham

Many thanks from: Mrs. Woytowich and the 5/6 C class
