COMMITTEE NEWS….
UPCOMING EVENTS
Traditional Italian American Christmas Eve Dinner, January 18th
The date for our annual Italian American Christmas Eve Dinner has been set. Seating will again be
limited to 150 people, so save the date and get your reservations in early.
Members $35, Non Members $40
Did you know that a traditional Italian American Christmas Eve celebration typically consists of seven different seafood
dishes? Hence: The Feast of the Seven Fish!!
This celebration commemorates the wait, THE VIGILIA di NATALE, for the midnight birth of the baby JESUS.
Some Italian American families have been known to celebrate with nine, eleven or even thirteen different seafood
dishes. The most famous dish Southern Italians are known for is baccala (salted cod fish). The custom of celebrating
with a simple fish such as baccala is attributed to the habitually impoverished regions of Southern Italy. A typical
Christmas Eve meal may include anchovies, whiting, lobster, sardines, smelts, eel, squid, octopus, shrimp, mussels
and clams. The menu may also include pastas, vegetables, bake goods and homemade wine.
The menu for our observance this year consists of:
ANTIPASTI: Seafood Salad comprised of baccala, calamari, shrimp, and either mussels or clams
complemented with oven roasted red peppers.
PRIMI: Frutti di Mare comprised of linguini in a garlic shrimp and scallop red sauce with a hot pepper oil
served on the side for those who like a more spicy flavor.
SECONDI: A haddock dish TBD and broccoli rape
DOLCI: An assortment of Italian pastries Bread served at each table.
Two bottles of wine served at each table. Red & White
Again, this year we must limit the number of people for this event to 150. Tickets will not be sold at the door.
So, please call early to reserve your tickets.
Please call Marianne Reali at 415-6341 or Jim DiBiase at 767-2292 for reservations.

first, accompanying the ill and disoriented Giorgio on his afternoon walks is a chore for petulant Alessandro,
but as Giorgio begins to recall his illustrious past, clues of a buried treasure are revealed, and the two

IHC Annual Christmas Concert
Our annual Christmas Concert held on Sunday, December 16 was the best attended yet.
And the audience was not disappointed. Thanks to all attendees and participants as well.
Italian Idiom for January (nonna said it best):
Chi prima non pensa, in ultimo sospira.
He who doesn’t deliberate carefully before doing something will utter, in the end,
a deep sigh of regret.
Buon Natale & Felice Anno Nuovo
The figure of La Befana (The Witch) has been an Italian Christmas tradition, long before Babbo Natale (Santa Claus) made his way into the bel paese (beautiful country)
culture. Most sources say that the myth of La Befana goes back to the 13th century.
The name La Befana derives from the word "epifania"(epiphany). Epiphany is the religious observation following Christmas of the arrival of the Three Magi to present their precious gifts to the Baby Jesus. The legend is that the Magi stopped along their long journey, knocking on the door of an old woman to ask directions to Bethlehem and to rest. She received them and offered them refreshments and, like any good Italian casalinga
(housewife)
inquired of their journey. They explained that they were following a star because a new king was born, a baby that would be the savior, and so they were making this arduous journey to pay homage and offer gifts to the new-born king. They asked her if she would like to accompany them, but she refused, saying she had too much house work to do. The Magi departed, but while she was sweeping her floor, La Befana reconsidered and decided she wanted to go along and see this baby king. She gathered together some sweets as a gift and ran out after them, but by then the Magi were long gone. She went along the journey, following the star they indicated and leaving sweets at every child's door hoping to find the baby Jesus. She continues her search, broom in hand, handkerchief on her head, filling socks with sweets and toys. (A more modern infusion into the tradition is that she leaves coal for mischievous children, adopted from the Santa Claus theme). Another recent distortion is to give her a witch's cap, but she was a casalinga (housewife) not a strega (witch). Many renditions of her are of an ugly old woman with a kerchief, hooked knotty nose with a wart, and a patch worked dress. She should be remembered as a poor old woman whose broom is her curse, the reason she missed out on the chance to kneel before the baby Jesus.
fatti italiani Italian Facts...
More facts about the Eternal City
It's Rome's birthday: The she-wolf is the symbol of Rome. On April 21st in 753 BC, the legend goes, Rome was first founded. Let’s look at some more of the most weird and wonderful
facts about what is often called the Eternal City. 10. Rome's most-visited tourist sites are the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, which each let more than 4 million tourists go through their doors each year. 11. Gladiators' blood was a hot commodity: ancient writings reveal it was used as a 'health drink' in ancient Rome and thought to cure epilepsy and aid fertility. 12. Rome's main university, La Sapienza, is the largest in Europe in terms of enrollment numbers. Founded in 1303, it's also one of Europe's oldest. 13. Remember Romulus and Remus, the city's founders? Some people believe they were raised by a she-wolf, an animal which is still the symbol of the city.
