I hope everyone had a joyous holiday and a Merry Christmas. The garden club celebrated in grand style with our annual holiday luncheon at the Talega Golf Club. They really did an outstanding job with their decorations and the food was exceptional. Thanks again to Sandy Cushman for organizing the event and the entertainment. And to Elyse Crane for a very successful toy drive and raffle. I’m sorry if some of you weren’t able to make it….but there’s always next year! We have so many great speakers and events planned for 2018! Make sure you check your directories and get the dates on your calendars, as you won’t want to miss a thing. In January alone we’ve got some really interesting happenings. Our speakers for the general meeting on Jan. 3 will be SCGC members Tanya Johnson and Suzi Klickstein, we’re having a rose pruning workshop from the Master Gardener experts on Jan. 9, a behind the scenes tour at Ralphs on Jan. 16, Garden Therapy at the RIO on Jan. 17 and a propagation workshop on Jan. 26. This list doesn’t even include our monthly activities for Civic Beautification, field trips or Jr. Gardeners. Boy, this year is going to be really busy and so much fun.

Garden Club members, Tanya Johnson and Suzi Klickstein recently visited the United Arab Emirates and will be sharing some of the highlights of their trip where they spent most of their

time in the Emirates of Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Their presentation will start with a short review of the amazing happenings in the UAE, and then will focus on the Dubai’s incredible Miracle Gardens, the World’s Largest Vertical Garden awarded by Guinness Book of World Records. The Miracle Garden is one of the most beautiful sites in Dubai. Its lush vegetation and bright vibrant flowers and verdant green foliage contrast with the image of Dubai as a desert destination. Learn how this Garden thrives in the middle of a vast desert.

January Meeting Program

The speaker will be Tom Carruth, Curator of the rose collection at the Huntington Library and Gardens. He is an award-winning hybridizer who is one of the nation’s leading rose experts. Please check in your 2017-2018 Membership Yearbook, page 51 for the details. We will carpool from St. Andrew’s Methodist Church at 8:00 am. The meeting is scheduled at the Placentia/Cornerstone United Methodist Church located at 2050 Valencia Avenue, Placentia, CA. from 9:30 am – 11:30 am. We look forward to seeing you. Not only will the speaker be terrific but meeting with other members of the District is very interesting and fun.

For the Next District Meeting:

Our Holiday Luncheon held at the Telega Golf Club on Dec. 6 was wonderful and enjoyable to all who attended. Decorations done by the Golf Club were fantastic including our favorite ‘guest’. Entertainment by the Harbor Singers brought smiles to our faces and music to our ears. We raised $506.00 from the raffle/donations along with many generous

children’s gifts from our members. The funds and gifts will be donated to FAM. The raffle donations were amazing and congratulations to all the winners.

Volunteers Barbara McLaughlin, Simone Costes, Kieu Doan, Mary Mohr, Sandy Cushman, Teresa Whitney, Doris Weinbaum, Tom Benton and Suzi Klickstein met at the RIO in December to assist the jolly RIO clients in making Christmas cards. Everyone was in the Christmas spirit, and the good-hearted volunteers cheerfully donned an assortment of holiday headwear for the amusement of the RIO clients. Earlier in the month, Simone and her posse spent several hours transforming oyster shells collected from the Fisherman’s Restaurant into adorable Santa Claus ornaments. For a special treat, each RIO client was given one of these unique decorations and they were thrilled. We finished the session with an exchange of Christmas wishes from all sides. In January, we will be meeting on Wednesday, January 10 at 10:30 am at Suzi Klickstein’s house to prep for the next RIO craft. We will meet at the RIO the following Wednesday, January 17 at 12:45 to do the craft with wonderful RIO folks. We hope you can make it for one or both of these activities.

Garden Therapy from Suzi Klickstein The school gardens are all doing well! At Las Palmas we had a fun Friday in the garden to make holiday teacher gifts. Thanks to the donations of garden club members we made and gave over 70 gifts of succulent plants to the teachers. Each teacher got a succulent garden in a pot tied with a bow and a handwritten note. I recently visited Shorecliffs to give them our grant check and found a thriving garden club there. While I was there two former students (now in high school) came after school to help the garden club do some weeding. Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at 9:45 amHeritage Hill Historical Park We are traveling back in history to Heritage Hill Historical Park in Saddleback Valley. Our docent lead tour starts at 10:30 and is $2 per person. We will leave St. Andrew’s parking lot at 10:00 am. I will collect the fee before we leave. There are a few eateries near the park and parking is free. The plantson site appear to be CA natives. Heritage Hill Historical Park’s 4.1 acres include four fully restored and furnished historic buildings that span the early history of the Saddleback Valley and El Toro area from the Mexican Rancho era circa 1863, through the citrus farming days of the early twentieth century. Tour of Ralph’s, Jan.16From Weej Baggaley of the Green Team Please join us for a tour of the Talega Ralph’s located at 811 Avenida Talega. The tour will be led by the manager, Dean Dodd, and is free for up to twenty San Clemente Garden Club members. Although the tour will involve the operations of the entire store, there will be a special emphasis on Green Team issues such as local produce sales, food waste, and energy consumption. We will meet at the Ralph’s store for the tour beginning at 9:30 am on Tuesday, January 16. The tour should last about an hour. Please bring your reusable beverage containers and reusable bags, if you’d like to buy a coffee or some groceries. There is an outdoor seating area, so perhaps we could gab over a cuppa after the tour. First twenty members to RSVP to me at weej@me.com get in. If there’s enough demand, I’d be happy to arrange a second tour at a later date.

Put May 19 on your 2018 calendars and be ready for our annual Garden Tour. As always, there will be beautiful gardens to explore and great food from local restaurants. This event is the San Clemente Garden Club’s largest fundraiser, and we need your help. Please consider joining our organizing committee which will begin meeting in January to make plans for the event. If you know of a local garden that would be a good candidate for the Tour, please pass that information on to: Garden Tour Chair, KK Ciruli (kkciruli@aol.com, 949-547-8484). We’ll need lots of docent hosts on the day of the event, and we’ll have sign-up sheets for that duty at the regular February meeting. Stay tuned!

The perfect gardener’s new year’s resolution—prune roses. And to start off the New Year right, the SCGC has invited rose experts and Master Gardeners, Gail Lam and Gloria Potocki, to give members a refresher course on rose pruning. Support our 2016 - 2017 Club Sponsors Several months ago a friend gave me a book “The Drunken Botanist: the plants that create the world’s great drinks” by Amy Stewart. I wasn’t sure what to expect. What is a drunken botanist? Was it a book about how to use plants to make various cocktails? Well, yes, but it is much more. The author includes facts about the many plants, trees, herbs and spices, flowers, nuts and seeds used in drinks, where and how the plants are grown, when the plants were discovered, how they may be incorporated into a beverage, and recipes. The book is arranged by the type of plant and gives the common name and botanical name as well. An example of an entry is cinnamon, the spice that fills many homes during the holiday season with its pleasant aroma. Ms. Stewart states that the spice was described in 350 BC by Aristotle. Cinnamon is the bark of a tree native to Sri Lanka. For many years Arab traders kept the location for the trees secret but once sailors from Portugal found it, the cinnamon trade expanded. Prior to the late 18th century, bark from these wild trees was harvested by cutting down young shoots, which forced the tree to send up new shoots. These shoots would be scraped to remove the outer bark and then long peels cut of the inner bark. Once the peels dry in the sun they roll into curled pieces that we find as cinnamon sticks. Now plantations grow Cinnamon verum specie. The highest quality comes from Sri Lanka but supplies also come from India and Brazil. It is generally labeled true cinnamon or Ceylon cinnamon. Cinnamon is found in gin, vermouth, bitters, and spicy liqueurs. There is even a gingerbread liqueur made in France. Other interesting plants include:• Birch tree sap is used to produce xylitol and birch extract is being investigated as an anticancer drug. Today the flavor is used in root beer. There is even a birch wine made in Scottish Highlands and birch vodka made in Ukraine.• The pulverized rhizome of the iris pallida is distilled to produce orris butter. Orris is found in almost every gin product and used by the perfume industry to hold the fragrance. It is also a very common allergen.• The colonists planted parsnips when they arrived in New England and began to make parsnip wine, an old English tradition.• Wormwood (Artemisia absinthium) used in wines and spirits dates back to Egyptian times. Absinthe, once thought to cause hallucinations became illegal in the United States, is now legal in many places around the world due to new regulations on a compound in the plant. Pick up a copy of this book and be fascinated by the many plants identified by Ms. Stewart. You will read many interesting facts about these plants.
