Happy New Year! It is a new year
and fresh start! Even if we do not admit it,
many of us secretly make resolutions. We
will do this or not do that. We will improve
on something or begin something new. If we
do nothing else this year, I want to suggest
that we all determine we will take one step in
this new year. One little step. Not run a race
or travel for miles, but one step. Take one
step closer to God.
How do you take a step closer to God?
Which way do you go? What does it look
like? It is different for everyone? Each
person must decide how that step will be
taken. Maybe it will be praying a few
minutes a day. Maybe it will be reading a
verse from the Bible each day. If you are
already doing these things, maybe your step
will look more like leading a small group or
attending a Bible study that you have not
attended before. Whatever your step is and
however much time it takes (one minute per
day or one hour a day), just take the step. No
matter who we are, we all need to take this
step.
One Little Step
Sunday Worship at 10:00 am followed by Fellowship Time at 11:00 am
January 2018
Along with taking a little
personal step, I want to encourage
you to find a small group and get
connected. It’s important to have
the encouragement and support of
people who love and care for you.
We have several small groups
currently meeting: Adult Sunday
School class, United Methodist
Women, United Methodist Men,
Choir, Knitters, Book Club,
Munching Methodists and Senior Social Club.
If you have thought that a Bible study,
discussion group or prayer time would be
nice to have, but the current times do not
work for you, please let me know what you
are interested in.
I pray that God will touch you and
your family in this new year. I pray that you
will get to know God more. I pray that our
entire church family will be connected to the
body in more than just Sunday Morning.
May you have a blessed new year.
Pastor Jenni
Please join us for worship on February 4th for Souper Bowl Sunday. Bring a can of
soup and $1 to worship. Rubber band the dollar to the can of soup and place it on
the altar rail in front of the Sanctuary. Our collection will go to CHOW!

Senior Social Club meets once a month here at
Nimmonsburg UMC. The Club is for active men and
women over the age of 70 who enjoy food, fellow-
ship and fun! The Club provides nourishment and
exercise for your mind, body and soul (essential for
whole health fitness).
The Club enjoys physical activities such as shuffle-
board, ladderball and Wii bowling (to name a few).
Pastor Jenni provides devotions and hymns for
spiritual enrichment, and members of the NUMC
Thrivent Action Team provide free homemade
lunches.
The Club also participates in games and activities,
both team-oriented and individual, to provide
nourishment for the brain. Hangman, modified
Wheel of Fortune, unique “crosswords” and Pass-
word have been favorites. The physical and mental
games provide all members with many bouts of
laughter, another essential for whole heath fitness.
We also exercise with simple movements and take
field trips.
Senior Social Club recently enjoyed a visit to the
Owego Museum to see the Christmas Tree Forest,
went to dinner at Perkins Restaurant, and then had
a one-street tour of some nicely decorated homes in
Vestal. We capped off the night with a quick stop at
the vets to pick up cat medicine for Phyllis’ cat!
Tai Chi is proven to relieve arthritis pain, improve your balance
and increase relaxation. Classes will be held on Mondays and
Wednesdays at 2:30 pm here at Nimmonsburg UMC, with the first
class on Monday, January 15th.
The cost is $35 for 8 weeks. If you would like to take classes, there
is a sign-up sheet on the Bulletin Board, or you can contact Nancy Oakley
at 723-3022.

Senior Social Club News
Even this little unexpected side trip provided an
amusing guessing game as to why there were so many
cars in the parking lot! We all had our own ideas!
The members of Senior Social Club have formed a
bond with members of the Club from Good Shepherd
Fairview Apartments. Meeting new people in your
later years is a very important part of staying social,
which is also important for whole health fitness.
If you have considered joining “the Club” but haven’t
done so yet, the New Year is here. Make becoming
healthy in mind, body and soul one of your New
Year’s resolutions. Join us! See Denise Kellett if you
are interested in joining us at our first meeting of the
year on January 16th from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm
here at NUMC.
Sarah Jane Johnson UMC has a Medical Lending Closet (walkers, canes, wheelchairs, crutches, bedside
commodes, etc.). If you have an item that is no longer needed and would like to donate it to the closet,
please call the Church at 797-3938 and mention the Medical Lending Closet. Thank you!

Birthdays Anniversaries
Art, Science and Music for Haiti SUNY Broome’s Health for Haiti program is always developing new educational projects for the hundreds of children with whom they work.
This January, they will be continuing the art and music programs already established, but adding science education. They need donations of the following items: Magnifying Glasses (small plastic classroom type), Plastic Rulers, Colored Pencils, Classroom-sized Pencil Sharpeners, Newsprint Pads and Small Sketch Pads (or scrap paper bound together). They are also looking for small music instruments such as Recorders, Kazoos, Triangles, Claves, Maracas, Drums, Shakers, Bells, and Clappers.
Other items needed are: Plastic Beads, Multicolored Yarn, Wooden Clothespins, Children’s Scissors, Coloring Books, Crayons, Craft Items (pom-poms, pipe cleaners, foam sheets) and Plastic Easter Eggs.
Please drop your items off in the Collection Box in the Church Narthex. We will be collecting for them until January 28th. Thank you!
Save Your Soles! (2018 Shoe Bag Challenge) We did it in 2015, and we want to do it again in 2018!! In 2015, together we collected 3700 pairs
of shoes and sent them on their way to helping people learn to be self-sufficient and improve their lives.
We’re looking for gently-used shoes that you might have outgrown, or don’t
want anymore. (Check the back of your closets!) The collection officially
begins in March, but we are already accepting shoes. There’s a collection box
in the hallway outside the Pastor’s Office, and one outside the front door. If
you need shoes picked up, please contact the Church Office at 724-5421.
If we all work together, I think we can do even better than last time.

What God Can Do With 57 Cents
A sobbing little girl stood near a small church from which she
had been turned away because it was “too crowded”. “I can’t go to
Sunday School”, she sobbed to the pastor as he walked by. Seeing
her shabby, unkempt appearance, the pastor guessed the reason
and, taking her by the hand, took her inside and found a place for
her in the Sunday School class. The child was so touched that she
went to bed that night thinking of the children who have no place to
worship Jesus. Some two years later, this child lay dead in one of the poor tenement buildings and
the parents called for the kindhearted pastor who had befriended their daughter to handle the final
arrangements.
As her poor little body was being moved, a worn and crumpled purse was found which seemed
to have been rummaged from some trash dump. Inside was 57 cents and a note scribbled in childish
handwriting which read, “This is to help build the little church bigger so more children can go to
Sunday School.” For two years she had saved for this offering of love. When the pastor tearfully
read that note, he knew what he would do. Carrying this note and the cracked red pocketbook to the
pulpit, he told the story of her unselfish love and devotion. He challenged his deacons to raise
enough money for the larger building.
A newspaper learned of the story and published it. It was read by a realtor who offered them a
parcel of land worth many thousands. When told that the church could not pay so much, he offered
it for 57 cents. Church members made large donations. Checks came from far and wide. Within five
days, the little girl’s gift had increased to $250,000—a huge sum for that time (near the turn of the
century). Her unselfish love had paid large dividends.
When you are in Philadelphia, look up Temple Baptist Church with a seating capacity of
3,300, and Temple University where hundreds of students are trained. Have a look at the Good
Samaritan Hospital and at a Sunday School building which houses hundreds of Sunday scholars, so
that no child in the area will ever need to be left outside during Sunday School time. In one of the
rooms of this building may be seen a picture of the sweet face of the little girl whose 57 cents, so
sacrificially saved, made remarkable history. Alongside of it is a portrait of her kind pastor, Dr.
Russell H. Conwell, author of the book, Acres of Diamonds—a true story.
Thank You Everyone
The United Methodist Women want to thank everyone who helped with and
donated Christmas shoeboxes! We delivered 54 filled boxes to the Boys and Girls
Club of Binghamton to be given to 54 children this Christmas. Nice Job!!
Sunday, January 28th from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm, NUMC will be
offering CPR/AED Training in Fellowship Hall. Learn how to save a

The Privilege of Prayer
Prayer is a privilege! A privilege is a right or entitlement attached specifically to a position or an office. As children of God, we have the privilege of running right up to the creator of the universe without fear or concern. The writer of Hebrews said, “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our t ime of need.” (Hebrews 4:16)
Bishop Mark Webb has called all people of the Upper New York Conference to prayer. For this reason we are declaring 2018 as a Year of Prayer! I am encouraging. No, stronger than that….. I am hoping to persuade each of you to participate in the following opportunities for prayer in 2018.
1. Personal Prayer Challenge
Spend 1 hour per day in the 40 days of Lent in personal prayer. Maybe this means four 15-minute segments or maybe all at once, but
be intentional about 1 hour a day for 40 days.
2. Prayer Chain Ministry
Learn more about the Prayer Chain Ministry of our church. Use the Prayer Chain to provide others opportunity to join you in prayer. Join the Prayer Chain and pray for the needs that come through. (See page 10)
3. The Privilege of Prayer
Beginning Sunday, January 7th, we will study a book called “The Privilege of Prayer” from 8:30 to 9:30 am, and from 11:30 am to 12:30 pm. (See below)
4. Weekly Prayer Gathering
Beginning Tuesday, January 9th, join the Pastor and others in the sanctuary for a time of prayer each Tuesday from 12:30 to 1:00 pm.
5. Monthly Prayer Gathering
Beginning Tuesday, January 16th, join the Pastor and others in the sanctuary for a time of prayer. We
will meet the third Tuesday of each month from 6:00 to 6:30 pm.
6. Two Prayer Gatherings
We will hold a Spring and a Fall Prayer Gathering. These will be Saturday, April 21st and Saturday, September 8th, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.
During each of these Gatherings, let us pray together in unity.
w Pray for personal renewal, hun-ger for God and His Word.
w Pray for a new openness to the Holy Spirit, signs and wonders.
w Pray for a missional heart, long-ing to see others come to Christ.
w Pray for a willingness to act, to be a part of what God is doing!
May the Almighty God draw us closer to himself. May others join us in the work of the Kingdom.
May God give us his creative vision for the work of his church in Nimmonsburg. Amen!
ADULT SUNDAY SCHOOL
We will begin “The Privilege of Prayer” on January 7th, and
spend ten weeks (ten lessons) on this study. We meet in Room 202
at 8:30 am prior to Worship on Sundays, and then again after Wor-
ship at 11:30 am to 12:30 pm in the Sanctuary.
You are welcome to come for one lesson, a few lessons, or for
the whole series.
FREE MOVIE NIGHT on January 29th at 6:30 pm
“Miracle Maker” Miracles can come in all shapes and sizes, and sometimes from unexpected places.

“thanks” for making angels for our shut-ins and making sure everyone received them! We also
kept some funds for going into the new year. so we can help others as needs are brought to our
attention.
2017 was another good year for Nimmonsburg UMW ...
… due to the support we received from donations and church members to help
make our projects a success. The end of the year is the best time for the
Nimmonsburg United Methodist Women. It’s when the money we accumulate
throughout the year is put to good use. This year, members of our Planning
Committee (Phyllis Bartlett, Karen Holman, Shelly Schaffer, Cheryl Weeks,
Nancy Stockholm, Jennine Justice, Rebecca Olivet) met in December to choose
the following for our end-of-year donations:
We held our Christmas Tea on December 17th with entertainment by the male quartet “Valley
Harmony” which was top notch and put everyone in a holiday mood. Thanks to those who brought donations
for CHOW, for Cheryl Weeks who delivered a car load to CHOW and the Rueffer family who helped load the
donations. We also want to thank Mark Rueffer, Dick Oakley and Paul Derr for forgoing football to work in
the kitchen for this event.
Other events in 2017 included Coffee Hour in February to raise funds for Church Women United’s No
Bake Bread Project (which goes to alleviate world hunger) and Coffee Hour in October to collect for Church
World Service Blankets and Tools Project, delivering pizza and brownies to SUNY-Broome dorms in March
and before finals in May, sending 27 school and health kits to Church World Service, holding the Mother-
Child Banquet in May, and both the spring and fall Rummage Sales and Bake Sales. We also baked cakes for
the Children’s Home Ice Cream Social in August.
Thanks to Phyllis Bartlett and Myrnie Ferro for sending cards to ill or hospitalized members and
friends of the Church, and to Phyllis Bartlett and Andrea Fynboe for creating and sending beautiful bouquets
to those with long hospital stays or recoveries.
Our Nimmonsburg congregation is so generous, and we can’t thank you enough for your help and
support of our projects.
Our Planning Committee will be meeting in the new year to plan activities for 2018 (any woman can be
on this Committee, just come). The date will be announced. We just need a short rest after the holidays.

Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is
anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. Is
anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of
the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil
in the name of the Lord. And the prayer offered in
faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise
them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.
Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for
each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a
righteous person is powerful and effective.
(James 5:13-16)
The Prayer Chain
There is power in prayer, especially when a
number of people are praying at the same time for the
same request. If you or a friend are in need of
immediate prayer, we urge you to use
Nimmonsburg’s Telephone Prayer Chain.
Members of the Chain are Nancy Oakley, Phyllis
Bartlett, Helen Morgan, Mini Daub, Dody Rusin,
Evelyn Erler, Dee Seeley and Burt Sturdevant.
To initiate a Prayer Chain request, contact the
Coordinator, Nancy Oakley, at 743-3022. Your
request will then be passed on to all Prayer Chain
members in sequence. To avoid any delay in
processing a request, the next person on the list will
be contacted whenever an answering machine is
encountered. Finally, the last Prayer Chain member
will call the Coordinator as verification that the
request went through the entire Chain.
For confidential prayer concerns, please call
the Church Office at 724-5421 or Pastor Jenni directly
at (716) 560-4400.
If you believe in the power of prayer, are
righteous, are able to keep a confidence, and would
like to become part of our Prayer Chain, please
contact Nancy Oakley at 743-3022.
Lay Readers
We are taking a new approach this year
regarding Lay Readers for worship. We have
assigned people to read each Sunday. If the date
doesn’t work for you, please call the office or
switch with someone else for a different Sunday.
If you don’t want to be a Lay Reader,
please let us know and we will remove you from
the list. If you are not on the list and would like
to be a Lay Reader, please let the office know
and we will add you.
The Lay Reader will receive a copy of the
Bulletin prior to the Sunday service so you can
review what you will be reading during worship
ahead of time.
Please contact Pastor Jenni if you have
any questions.
