Commodore’s Comments ............... Comm. Mark Gross Happy New Year! – I know some of you are not too happy with the weather as 2017 came to an end and 2018 began. I love it! The cold and snow are what make winter in the north enjoyable to me (I hope to do a little skiing!), certainly better than bone-chilling rain this time of year. Another bunch who is happy about it is the ice boaters, a hardy group of sailors who keep the passion going year-round. As I write this, the ice conditions are fantastic on Sandusky Bay and many ice boaters are taking advantage of it. For those of you who don’t like this weather, it won’t be long before it warms up and we can get back to sailing on liquid water. Think warm thoughts! Annual budget meeting – SSC held our annual budget meeting on Dec. 16 and approved the budget for 2018. The Board recommended a modest increase in expenditures and the membership approved. The SSC budget, combining normal club operations and the operation of the sailing basin (which is a part of the club), projects a positive net income for the club. Thanks to Dave Brink and Bernie Ashyk for their work in preparing the budget. As always, your leadership will work hard to be good stewards of the club’s assets. Committee volunteer requests – The SSC Board has approved committee assignments for 2018. (Please see the attached Committee List.) Please note that the SJSI Board and SJRT Committee are separate from SSC and listed for your information. If you don’t see your name and you have interest in a particular committee, please let me know and I will be pleased add you. If SJSI or SJRT are your interest, please contact the SJSI leadership and I am sure they would love your help. I also encourage you to complete and return the volunteer form that will accompany your membership renewal and dues statement. Thoughts on our club – The Sandusky Sailing Club has a long history as a volunteer-driven organization and, indeed, our members have put in countless thousands of hours to make our club what it is. We all owe them a debt of gratitude. While SSC continues to rely very heavily on our members to donate their time, skills, and energy to the club, it is also important to recognize that we have had a part-time, professional manager at SSC for a number of years now. While most of us never want to see SSC become a fully- managed and staffed club like some others, we have come to rely on our manager to take care of many tasks that used to be handled by volunteers, particularly as it relates to maintenance of the clubhouse and marina. Sometimes it seems we are in a sort of middle ground between what we used to be and what we don’t want to become. We must recognize what our employees should do for us and what our members must do for us. We have a shared responsibility to our club. As you use your club, please treat it like you would your home. If you see a piece of trash on the ground, please pick it up and throw it away. If you see something that needs attention, please try to help or notify Tim, so that it can be resolved. Finally, please continue to volunteer and give back to the club in any way you can. If we all resolve to do this, SSC will continue to be the club we all love and will just get better. If you have any thoughts on this, please feel free to share them with me. If you have any concerns or there is anything that you believe will make our club better, please don’t hesitate to contact me at [email protected] or 419-357-6747. You may also contact any other member of the Bridge or Board. Vice Vice Baby!! .....................VC John Schwartz This is a funny time of year for me, midpoint in my non- sailing season. In March, I will bring the Interlake out of the barn and fix all the damage I caused last summer learning the boat. Top on the list is adding more flotation. My boat is hull #473, so even with styrofoam fore and aft, I’ve sailed more conservatively than I might have because I didn’t want to win the 2017 Blue Velvet by making the front page of the Register sailing a submarined Interlake full of water and mast up. Or having to get towed back by a cigarette boat on its way back from the Casino. Anyway, like many of you I’m sure, I spend a fair amount of time thinking about sailing these days and about SSC. PO BOX 814 • SANDUSKY, OHIO 44871-0814 • www.sanduskysailingclub.com The object of the Sandusky Sailing Club shall be the promotion and encouragement of sailing and seamanship, and of a sportsmanlike attitude toward racing and competition. The Club is organized to encourage small boat sailing and racing among those who may not be able to afford large annual dues and assessments.

While most of us never want to see SSC become a fully-managed and staffed club like some others, we have come to rely on our manager to take care of many tasks that used to be handled by volunteers, particularly as it relates to maintenance of the clubhouse and marina. Vice Vice Baby!! .....................VC John SchwartzThis is a funny time of year for me, midpoint in my non-sailing season. As Vice, it is customary that I take on a physical project around the clubhouse. I have some small projects on the radar, like taking credit cards at the dairy bar and/or better organizing the storage rooms and/or figuring out how to better show off the new SSC gear that Carolyn Zettler has brought to the club. However, I think that the most helpful task that I can take on this winter is to at least start a discussion about where we all agree the club needs to grow. So, over February and March I’m going to work with RC Bedee to coordinate social events and forums to solicit lots of feedback. In the meantime, I hope that your holidays were great. Graeme and Lily have January birthdays, so Court and I will be focused on them for the next few weeks.Happy 2018! I look forward to seeing you at the club.Keep the ideas coming either by email at [email protected] or by voice/text at 419-706-5137.

The View from the Rear ...........RC Matt BedeeWell, we are officially into 2018. WOW!!! We have events planned for January, February, March, and April. If you have any ideas for events, please contact me. Thank you to all that have offered up ideas and volunteered to host an event already later in the year.Friday Forums will continue in 2018, with a twist, starting in February. For the food, I want to attempt to make it interactive and try an idea from a bakery client of mine. We will be making gourmet pizzas to share with others or just for you. If you have a unique, favorite pizza (keyword is unique), you can bring the toppings you need to make the best pizza of the night. It will be a learning experience I’m sure and typical toppings will be provided. Let me know in advance if you need Gluten-Free Crust. January will not have a Friday Forum due to the Cleveland Boat Show at the IX Center, so stop and see the Sandusky Sailing Club booth that has been organized by PC Steve France. This is part of Steve’s effort to expand membership and expand the awareness of Sandusky Sailing Club. Beer Tasting Party will be Jan. 27 from 6-9pm. We are finalizing the beers to be served and will be providing heavy hors d’oeuvres to officially kick off 2018 at SSC. Friday Forum – On Feb. 16 from 7-9pm will be light in nature with the experiment that is gourmet pizzas and will feature a presentation by Sandusky Junior Sailors regarding the Learn To Sail Program and Adaptive Adventures.Wine Tasting Party will be Feb. 24 from 6-9pm. As in years past, we will include many varieties of wine and heavy hors d’oeuvres, including my smoked pulled pork.St. Patty’s Day Party will be March 17 from 6-10pm and will once again be hosted by Jay Austin. Friday Forum – On March 23 from 7-9pm and will be a presentation on shipwrecks of Lake Erie – fire, storm, collision. More information to come.Friday Forum – On April 20 from 7-9pm will be a presentation by David Smith on sailing Penobscot Bay in Maine.

For info/updates on all events, watch your email or check the SSC Calendar and Facebook. Please feel free to email me with questions, comments, or suggestions at [email protected] or call/text at 419-202-0044.
