While property crimes in Temple Cityhave been on the rise, sheriff ’s officialswant residents to know they are doingtheir best to combat the current trend.
Speaking last week at the city’smonthly law enforcement meeting, Sgt.Ron Miranda of the Los Angeles CountySheriff ’s Department, Temple Station, said there are a mixture of factors con-tributing to an increase in residential, commercial, and other types of theft.
Illustrating Sgt. Miranda’s point isthat there have already been 164 residen-tial burglaries in 2016 through Octoberand that number is up over the 127 bur-glaries committed during all of 2015, ac-cording to statistics compiled by theTemple City Public Safety Division.
In addition, when comparing Octo-ber 2016 to the same month of the pre-vious year, the number of all reportedburglaries and thefts has increased nearly49 percent, from 39 to 58, according tothose same statistics.
One of those factors is the holidayseason that tends to bring out the worstin some, Sgt. Miranda said. He added
that fellow deputies are very involved inthe community, and work with residentsto find out who exactly is committingthose crimes.
“We’re trying to identify people whodon’t belong here, people who are up tono good,” he said. “The goal is we wantto stop crime. We’re trying to be proac-tive. We are gathering information. Weshare with other agencies.”
Sgt. Miranda also said the deputiesstay engaged locally in fighting crime, adding it can often bring some fruitfulresults.
“Once we identify someone on ourprobation or parole watches who mightbe walking that fine line, they will bechecked a little more regularly,” he said.“We’ve caught some pretty bad peoplebecause they just fall back into thatlifestyle.”
The sergeant added that the sheriff ’sdepartment has increased saturationpatrols for the next few months, whichare above and beyond normal servicelevels. An additional 500 hours of man-power have been added to the streets, equaling about 20 more hours per weekfrom patrols comprised of two to threedeputies.
Capt. Coronne Jacob, who overseesTemple Station, said another reason forthe rise in property crimes might be thepassage of Proposition 47 back in No-vember 2014. Proposition 47 took manycrimes that were felonies and reclassifiedthem as misdemeanors.
“We think there’s a corollary withProposition 47,” Capt. Jacob said. “Thesheriff ’s department is currently lookinginto the stats. And those are propertycrimes, mostly related to residential bur-glaries, commercial burglaries, and theft,in general.”
As for now, Capt. Jacob is speculatingProposition 47 is having a negative ef-fect on the crime rate as criminals are in
and out of jail much more rapidly thanbefore the initiative’s passage.
“Those crimes, instead of someonebeing arrested and spending three daysin jail before seeing a magistrate and be-ing sentenced, those people are getting acitation,” she said. “They are brought tojail. Once they get a warrant, they arecleared to go to court later. That allowsthem to continue their lifestyle beforethey go to court and if they go to court.”
And while Proposition 47 is on themind of the department, Jacob said youcan’t just rule out that’s it’s all becauseof the holiday season.
“We do believe it goes up during the
Property crimes up in Temple City; holidays, Prop 47 may be to blame

So as I’m writing it looks like2017 has arrived in what seemslike record time.
And I suppose some of uswho’ve attended many past ro-deos might be a little cynical orresigned ... as in ... here we goagain. But not me. In fact, as weopen up a new calendar, I can’twait to get my hands on thatbeautiful blank page that showsup every Jan. 1.
I see the pristine sheet as areminder that I can be the au-thor of my own life story. Andwhat’s really cool is the chancewe all have to share the experi-ence.
I love New Year resolutions;I write ‘em down. I even go pub-lic with ‘em.
So here they are: my Top 10New Year resolutions for 2017:
10. You’re in my dental chair.I say, “Almost done.” Three min-utes later I’m still working. Youget 10 bucks.
9. I will write at least one per-
sonal note per day ... legibly.8. I will NOT verbally/physi-
cally abuse my computer, Hal...whenever possible.
7. I’ll forgive the Lakers, Bru-ins, and Michigan ... because ...they know not what they do.
6. I’ll remember Dental As-sistant Appreciation Day is ev-ery day.
5. I will NOT run down LasTunas wearing only a hula skirtand a bruin baseball cap be-cause after 10 years, CamelliaSquare (or whatever) develop-ment still lags behind the Re-public of Burundi.
My top 10 resolutions for 2017
4. I will prove even thoughWill Rogers never met a man hedidn’t like ... he never metDonald Trump.
3. I’ll say, “I love you” at leastonce a day. And yeah, TeamLeader Dani, no mirrors al-lowed.
2. I will NOT mix plaid, stripes, and paisley attire ... thusignoring all fashion tips frommy co-workers.
1. I’ll be looking and listen-ing for greatness, humor, andcompassion ... unless I’m infront of a banker.
Happy New Year.
Temple City: The Good Life
Dear Emmy, how willTrump’s presidency affect ourfinancial lives?
That’s the question oneverybody’s mind. Time maga-zine recently named Trump2016 Person of the Year andstated: “Whatever happensnext, it will never be like it wasbefore.”
That’s a bit hyperbolic, butthe point is no one can say forcertain.
I can, however, briefly recapthe 30 days since the election:The market is up.
The Dow industrials, S&P500 and small-cap focusedRussell 2000 have risen to all-time highs.
United States Steel Corp.stock rose 80%.
As I write this, the chyronacross CNBC’s screen says: “10out of 11 market sectors rise,”
h e a l t h c a r ebeing theo d d - m a nout.
Stock mar-ket investorsare pleased.T a n g i b l y ,
Markets happy so far with Trump
however, very little has changedin the economic or regulatoryarena since Election Day, Nov.8. Tax rates remain the same.Corporate earnings are gener-ally unchanged. One major ex-ception is OPEC’s decision toreduce oil output in hopes ofelevating its price.
The market’s rise may be dueto perceptions that “things areabout to change” more than anyactual nut-and-bolts changes todate. Trump’s soon-to-be presi-dency is apparently seen as aboon for industrial production. But this has yet to happen. Ad-ditionally, some economists re-mind us that increased corpo-rate profit doesn’t necessarily
lead to Main Street growth or liftthe economy dramatically.
Elections bring change. Inthe financial industry, thischange is being examined withcaution, conflict and some con-currence. Even if the incomingadministration were whollytransparent, unknowns will riseto the surface as they always do.Our job is to recognize themand to attempt to plan accord-ingly.

Theproject will be contributing approxi-mately $15,000 in parks fees, $25,000 insewer reconstruction fees, and $110,000in other building permit fees.
Holiday Lights and DecorationsThe Community Preservation Divi-
sion offers a friendly reminder, per

A new report has just been released which reveals 7 cost-ly mistakes that most homeowners make when selling their home, and a 9 Step System that can help you sell your home fast and for the most amount of money. This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less ef-fective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their homes and become disillusioned and - worse – fi nancially dis-advantaged when they put their homes on the market. As this report uncovers, most homesellers make 7 deadly mistakes that cost them literally thousands of dollars. The good news is that each and every one of these mistakes is entirely preventable. 7 Things You Must Know Before Putting Your Home Up for Sale
Most Americans do notknow or refuse to accept thefacts surrounding their poten-tial need for long-term care andthe costs associated with it.
Despite the availability ofthis information, most Ameri-cans are unprepared for thecosts associated with long-termcare.
On average, only one-thirdof adults are confident in theirability to pay for long-termcare.
Interestingly, while many in-dividuals reported being con-cerned about leaving familywith debt or becoming a bur-den on loved ones, many dolittle to alleviate their concernin the way of planning.
The three most popular op-tions for long-term care arelikely personal savings, long-term care information, or elder
The importance of planning forlong-term care through Medi-Cal
law planning.Starting in 2017, elder law
planning through Medi-Calhas become a much more at-tractive option due to limitedrecovery after death.
If you have ever thoughtabout Medi-Cal planning, starting January 1, 2017, withthe passing SB-833, Medi-Calrecovery is now limited to as-sets that are subject to probate.
This means that if you have
property that is in a trust, co-owned, or if you have benefi-ciaries listed on your accounts,Medi-Cal cannot recover theseassets after you pass away.
This is a major change in thelaw and will make Medi-Calpre-planning a much more at-tractive option to many of myclients since after-death recov-ery is now much more limitedthan recovery was in the past.

Property crimes up in Temple CityHoliday season, Proposition 47 may be to blame
holidays,” she said. “That’s just based on experi-ence. A lot of people have packages delivered. They’re not home and the packages get stolen offtheir front porch. They shop and leave packagesin their cars.”
And crimes committed in Temple City are re-ally not that much different from those commit-
ted in neighboring cities, sheadded.
“Crime that’s in Temple City isthe same as the crime that isthroughout the San Gabriel Val-ley,” Jacob said. “We are basicallya target-rich environment here inTemple City. People who don’twant to work for a living, theyprey on those who do. Crime doesnot pay. It catches up with you.”
And one more worry for law
enforcement in Temple City is the passage ofProposition 57 back on Nov. 8. That initiative willrelease many inmates from jail early.
How will that affect local crime? Jacob said sheisn’t sure yet.
“The effects of that remain to be seen,” she said.“Any time we’re letting criminals who are in cus-tody out of custody, it would certainly add tocrime.”
City Council member Nanette Fish said whileall crime cannot be stopped, there is one tech-nique she has personally tried to keep thieves offof her street.
“One of the things we’ve done in my neigh-borhood is we’ve tried to get to know each otherand each other’s schedules,” Ms. Fish said. “It’shelped me a great deal. Enough of us in TempleCity don’t know our neighbors anymore. You re-ally have to make a point of getting to know yourneighbors. So, if you see something, you can call(your neighbor).”

Pet of the Month
Princess is a delightful 12-year old Staffordshire mix girl with precious looks that match her personality.
She has a gorgeous tricolor brindle coat with black, white, and tan streaks that perfectly compliment her chocolate puppy-like ears.
Weighing about 48 pounds, this petite lady is built just right for cuddling. And Princess loves her cuddle time with anyone willing to rub her belly and lend a lap to snooze on.
She enjoys her walks around the park and is great on the leash. But more than walks, toys, and treats, Princess loves to relax next to her human friends indoors or out.
Princess came to our shelter when she was surrendered by her previous owner because they moved to a place where a no-pet area.

He looks Santa Claus. He evendresses like him and he can beltout a solid “ho, ho, ho!”
But no, he does not live at theNorth Pole. This Santa lives inTemple City with Mrs. Claus andloves delighting children duringthe holidays and at a number ofcommunity events.
Danny Redmond can foolanyone into believing he is theone and only Santa Claus. Mr.Redmond, a city public safetycommissioner and nurse withthe County of Los Angeles, comes complete with a genuinewhite beard and a very real Mrs.Claus at his side, his wife HelenRedmond.
“I’ve had a beard since 1980,”said Mr. Redmond. “The lasttime I shaved was when I was innursing school, and not since.”
For the past six years, he hasbeen serving as Santa Claus, firstperforming at parties with theTemple City High School band, and later for the city, mostnotably at “Lights on TempleCity.”
As the town’s premier SantaClaus, Mr. Redmond said he putsin the proper work that isrequired if you really want tolook like and be like St. Nick.
“Instead of just painting the

beard, I go and get it bleached,”he said. “I got a custom-madecostume. I got a custom-madecostume for Mrs. Claus. We’veinvested in the role now. I’mgoing with my strengths: I’m fat,I’m bearded. What better?”
But the main reason he saidhe likes to be Santa is the over-whelming appreciation from thechildren when they see him in hisred suit at Christmas time, adding there is nothing else quitelike it.
“The thing that got medevoted to it was the first year Idid Lights on Temple City,” saidMr. Redmond, who first ap-peared at the event in 2012.“Going from the antique car thatdrives us (down Las Tunas Drive)from Ralph’s to (Temple CityPark), and from the car to lightthe tree, the adulation andcheering that I got made me feellike Mick Jagger. It was the mostpositive esteem I have ever felt inmy life. I sort of became addictedin one dose.”
While it’s mostly rock star-likecheering and lot of fun with thechildren, Mr. Redmond saidsometimes kids ask for thingsthat are out of Santa’s control.
“There are some real hardthings, so you have to want tobring happiness to kids,” he said.“You also have to be a little bit
resilient. Kids may ask you something fortheir health or health of a family member, their parents’ marriage, but when it hits, ithits hard and deep.”
Another job hazard Mr. Redmond foundis trying to be Santa to kids who are a littleolder and might just be catching on.
“They are suspicious,” he said. “Six-year-olds will frisk you to see if there are pillows. They will pull your beard to make sure thatit’s real. Seven is when they really start tothink critically. Earlier than that they’rechecking to see if you’re the real Santa. Afterthat they’re challenging the concept com-pletely. And that’s ok, because I can sell ituntil they’re 10 years old.”
Mrs. Redmond, a nurse with Temple CityUnified School District, said she didn’t decide
to be Mrs. Claus until her husband wasalready Santa for a few years. And then it justkind of worked.
“It wasn’t the kind of thing we thoughtout at all,” she said. “But then we had somuch fun doing it together. It’s really, reallyfun.”
She added while she has to be a bit stern inher day job, she said it is quite the relief to letgo a little when performing.
“I’ve had to learn how to be Mrs. Claus,”Mrs. Redmond said. “And I am not the mainattraction. I’m just background activity.”
The couple has lived in Temple City since1984 and Mr. Redmond said he is enjoyinghis life in town while wearing the red suit.
“I feel like this is my turf,” he said.
