Martin Luther King Day of Service
January 2017Editor's MessageDina Davis, SEAPAX newsletter editor
It was a busy 2016 for SEAPAX. As newsletter editor I have had afront row seat and would like to take this opportunity to thank thefabulous team we have had as we transition to a new team withTom Miller as SEAPAX president.
Led by the dynamic duo of Lillian Baer and Arlene Mitchell withthe guidance of Joana Ramos and tech-savvy of Scott Ramos,SEAPAX offered in 2016 the RPCV community chances to learnfrom and connect with other cross-cultural and internationally-focused groups,as well as social and service opportunities. BusyBeth Do used her organizational skills to respond to inquiries toSEAPAX and keep us on track. Kevin Brady kept an eye on thefinances and kept the team informed. With the help of Jill McKay-Fliesch we spread some of those dollars out into the communityand internationally in the form of small grants. Jessica (Mathews)Nyak and Caroline (Nelson) Brandau found time to organize andpublicize SEAPAX activities around their happy life events.
We said farewell to Ursula Wright and Laurel Saito as theymoved away to more adventures. We thank them for their workand help this past year.
Brandon Chiesa continues his popular efforts to connect RPCVswith monthly Happy Hours and Quiz Night teams. The connectionsand skills of Mark Hower led us to the wonderful Imam JamalRahman who presided over the Ramadan Break-fast dinner, aswell as providing us with excellent meeting space at AntiochUniversity. Carolee Walters continues in the important role ofcalendar sales. It is through this fund raising effort that SEAPAXgets the dollars to spread into the community. She also organizedthe popular Salvadoran Eats Out dinner in October. Tom Millerand Nikki Eller provided support and input as the leadership teamstrives to serve returned volunteers and support the Peace Corpsthird goal of enhancing international understanding.
Honor the spirit of communityempowerment and service byvolunteering to help at one of the manyevents organized over the MLKweekend January 12 -16. There areevents suitable for groups, families andindividuals. Find out more here:https://www.uwkc.org/events/mlk-day-of-service/
