A Message From The PresidentHappy New Year!

This will be my final message as President as the votes are in and you have elected Dan Martin for President in 2017.  Congratulations Dan and thanks for taking on the helm of this great PCA Region.  I have enjoyed my membership in Musik Stadt Region, with the many events we have had and especially the people I have met over the years.  Thank you for your friendship and support all these years.

I also must thank all of the officers, and board members and Concours Chairs, judges and support team as 2017 will be our 5th Annual Concours in the Park, and also our 35th Anniversary in PCA.  Thanks to John Hudson and the charter team who brought Musik Stadt Region to life 35 years ago.  Thanks also to Bruce Sweetman and Tanner Mashburn for their great photos taken at the Concours and our Annual Banquet.

Speaking of Bruce Sweetman, check out Bruce's articles in both the November and December issues of Panorama.  Both have a great story to tell and Bruce's pictures are always awesome!

Check out the upcoming events calendar in this issue.  It's time to register for our Jan 28 Annual Awards Banquet at Brentwood Country Club.  This is always a great event with over 100 club members in attendance, and lots of door prizes to give away.  Don't miss out - register today at www.musikstadtpca.org   Details of the event are there also.

Attention older Cayman and Boxster owners.  If your car has over 50 or 60K

miles, consider replacing your water pump soon.  My 2006 Cayman S turned 66K miles this year and the pump failed 2 weeks ago.  When I started my car, it sounds like a broken washing machine coming apart.  Not sure whether to drive it or not, I limped into Porsche of Nashville to discover the water pump had failed.  Thank goodness nothing harmed by driving it there, but if they hadn't been so close, I would have probably called for tow truck (Jerr-Dan of course).  If you have yours proactively replaced, consider a new drive belt as well since it is now accessible.  Thanks to Kent Kersten who helped me replace mine a couple years ago....OK OK, I helped him.

I look forward to seeing you at our many upcoming events, including the Banquet, 1st Saturday breakfasts in Jan, Feb and Mar, German Cars & Coffee starting in April and our Concours on May 20th.  Come out and show off your cars and meet some great PCA members.

Mike Moody

Analog Sports Cars In The Digital AgeBy: Ken Maurer

As is the case for many of us, the turn of the new year tends to put me in bit of a reflective mood. It was within that mood that I started to wonder how much longer we will have the wonderful, visceral sports cars from Porsche and others that we enjoy today. No doubt many would argue much of that visceral feeling has already been lost to stability control, ABS, fuel injection - even things I’ve taken for granted my entire driving lifetime, such as power steering and power brakes.

Yet, while one could argue that any of those things, while adding convenience and safety, has simultaneously worked to reduce the link between driver and machine, I do think the technologies on the horizon are poised to do so with much more dramatic effect. Electric motors and batteries, a motive curiosity just a few years ago, appear to be on the cusp of being added to most every vehicle in the near future. The reduced fuel use they promise too much for manufacturers to ignore, among other things. Yet, I can’t help but wonder how much more weight these items

will add to vehicles already fast approaching and surpassing the two ton line.

Weight is the enemy of sporting machines - always has been and always will be. No matter how fat or sticky the tires, how trick the suspension, how fancy the computer computations, you simply must always account for every gram in a sporting car. It’s simply physics, and physics does not care how fancy our technology may be.

There just are not that many machines out there that are under 3000 pounds anymore, let alone weigh in closer to 2000 pounds. Yet, after reading last year of Porsche’s decision not to offer an “entry level” vehicle below the Boxster/Cayman line, I cannot help to think of what might have been.

As awesome as Porsche’s current offerings are, to my mind they suffer from the same problem (albeit it a lesser degree) that nearly all new sports cars do - in the quest for more speed and faster lap times, they sacrifice driver involvement and connection to some degree. It’s not necessarily a lot in any one area; a bit here and a little there, but it adds up. Now the naturally aspirated flat 6 is gone from the “entry level” lineup completely, and with it, more driver involvement or at least a good bit of emotion. No doubt the new 718s will be faster and quicker than the 981s, just as the 981s were to the 987s, but does it make it more fun?

What if there were another alternative? What if Porsche had decided to give us a new entry level sports car? Not so absurd considering the price of most new Boxsters or Caymans these days are easily above 70k, and often in the 90k range, unless you order one yourself. How about a mid-engine, flat 4 of 2.0 to 2.5 liters, in a chassis smaller than the Boxster/Cayman? Shoot for say 200 to 250 hp, and a curb weight around 2500 pounds or less. Give it maximum driver involvement, rather than searching for every tenth of a second that can be found. Give it a well designed manual transmission and a limited slip differential. Give it built in slip angles that are fun, as opposed to super-wide, super grippy tires.

I suppose it sounds like I’m hoping for a modern day interpretation of the 914, and to a fair degree, I guess I am. I long for the days of the analog sports car. I hope against hope that a new sports car offering will place driver involvement and fun at the top of the list, rather than touting all sorts of new technology and algorithms to achieve some previously unheard of time around the Nurburgring Nordschleife (no offense to all you track day enthusiasts out there). I want a simple, back road barn stormer, that won’t cost 90k, one that prioritizes driver involvement and driving emotion over a few ticks of a stop watch. An analog sports car - or at least that is what I call it. Sadly there are few of those left.

As good as Porsche’s sports cars still remain today, I find each new generation saddens me slightly, as we move farther and farther from that analog driving experience that is so engaging and fun, and more toward a sanitized, digitalized driving experience. In some ways, it

seems like it’s threatening to become simply driving quickly from point A to point B. Yes, it can be done, but does it make it more fun?

Please do not misunderstand - I’m not panning Porsche’s current offerings. Of all sports car manufacturers, I think they are doing all they can to maintain that human and machine link that I and many others crave. And of course, it is easy for me to think of all sorts of sports car offerings I wish were available when I do not have to make a business case for them to a board of directors. Nevertheless, here is hoping that 2017 will still see some analog goodness in the sports car world. Here is hoping that lap times will not trump driver involvement and fun in every scenario, and here is hoping that the new offerings from Porsche still retain some semblance of that human and machine link that served them so well in the past.

Thank You!As you know, this month, Mike Moody will

be stepping down as President of the Musik-Stadt chapter of PCA. We would

like to thank Mike for all his hard work and dedication to the club over the years.

Keep it shiny side up Mike!
