INTRODUCTION
Happy New Year, everyone! I supposed I write that at this time every year, but I
always mean it. Let’s all look at the new year as an opportunity to start over, start new or continue with success, “don’t worry, be happy”, and put our cares and woes away.
The TWKK Winter Tournament is just around the corner; Saturday, February 27th
. I
am really hoping the weather holds out so we see a great turn-out. The flyer is at the end of the newsletter.
We lost one of our own. A past Port Perry and Brooklin-Whitby karateka, Spencer Bedell Shodan-Ho, passed away this month. Our condolences to Spencer’s family and
friends.
Sensei Ron Ruskay retired from his karate career in December and pictures and
comments from Ron are shared in the News From Clubs. Happy Retirement, Ron!
As always – Enjoy your read! > EDITOR ROBB DODS

Senior Dan Council Member – Sensei Freeman W. Thurston, Rokudan
Caribbean Director and Head of Bahamas & Caribbean AIKIWA Wado Kai Karate
Celebrating 41 years (and counting!) of Community Karate Training and Youth Development Programs
Some 41 years ago, Bahamas Wado-Kai (its nucleus founded in 1973/74) offered a summer training program at the Freeport, Grand Bahama, YMCA (the forerunner of Bahamas/Caribbean Aikiwa Wado-Kai Karate / Kubudo), for kids.
The primary objective of this program was to fill in the usually boring, mischief-prone, long hot days after the euphoria of the school closings wears off, and dull, nothing-to-do reality takes root in most of our youth.
The program was originally seen to be a very limited, essentially a one-off “special”, as there were no plans for the karate sessions expanding beyond the initial summer offerings. Fate intervened, however, and bowing to public demand and support, the program was modified and offered in the Fall/Winter as a regular YMCA program, taking on a life of its own when the Community Centre programs were organized in the Spring for urban youths.
Over the ensuing 41 years, the programs expanded greatly to include primary and secondary schools. Young adult classes were organized and a vibrant adult training program flourished; that is, programs for the whole family. The programs, offered ‘free-of-charge’ to all initially (i.e., subsidized by Sensei Freeman Thurston ) are now supported with special funding by the Bahamas Government via Freeport, Grand Bahama, Local Government Council and occasional grants from Corporate Friends-of-Bahamas Wado-Kai.
Technical and managerial support and encouragement were provided personally by Sensei Dave Manara, 9th Dan,
and via a ‘rash’ of visiting TWKK Senior ranks. Included were Sensei Robb Dods, Rob Stark, Blaine Beemer, Eric Goddard, and Steve Borda. A delegation of TWKK students and senior belts came to provide fellowship and train with us in Freeport in 1992. Our tireless Sensei Robb Dods gets the lion’s share of making that trip happen. Our Bahamamamas,
Veronica and Lenore, did one better () with the Bahamas 2010 visit; and what an enormous success that undertaking turned out to be!
From those early, very challenging days the life-blood of AIKIWA Wado-Kai Karate development in the Bahamas and, by extension, the Caribbean Region as a whole, to this date has been our close “family” relationships with Sensei Dave and the entire TWKK organization. Cultivated and nurtured over the decades, therein lies our Harmony, our Strength.
Notable milestones and benchmarks for Sensei Freeman Thurston – the Man, and Bahamas & Caribbean AIKIWA Wado-Kai Karate – the organization, are inseparable entities at this stage of our development!
Pictured here is Sensei Freeman (4th from left)

Annual TWKK Training Camp in 2013 at

As I'm writing this the weather outside is frightful and I've heard that song play at least a thousand times already on the radio and in the malls. We've held our last karate class for the year and are on Christmas break. Sensei Kim is fiendishly planning for the first class back in
January where we discover who had too jolly of a Christmas by putting the class through a grueling New Year workout
Half of a karate year gone already? It's incredible. It has been a very busy half year.
The class swelled again in size after the summer break. We had to start a dedicated white belt line for mokuso in September. One of our sensei returned to school this year so that left us with one less able body to help lead the training. Then Sensei Kim was out for six weeks for some surgical recovery. Through it all we have kept things moving along. I have to thank the remaining sensei (Mike L, Mike D, Bruno, Emma and Olivia) and Herb who really
stepped up and shared the responsibility for managing the class.
In our annual Christmas fun class we relived the tradition of blending workouts and laughter. We held the reindeer races (two karateka pull a third across the dojo and back by their feet). We gasped our way through the group circle pushups. (Picture six big burly guys lying in a
circle head to toe; the feet of each person rest across the shoulders of the person behind them; then all six do ten pushups at the same time. Only hands are touching the ground.) And, most important, and possibly painful of all, was the "telling Santa what you want for Christmas".
The Santa ritual involves the entire class resting with their backs against the wall in sitting position (we had about 40 people for this class). Then the first person in the line gets up and sits on the knee of the next person and tells them what they want for Christmas. Once they've done that they move to the next person and sit on their knee and do the same. Meanwhile, the new first person in line gets up and follows, sitting on knees and making requests. The line moves around the dojo because once an "asker" gets past the last "Santa" they, too, go into the chair position against the wall and wait for each asker to come along.
It's a lot of fun and a great leg workout. It's no problem for the adults to have little kids sit on their knee, but everyone participates at every stage. So the adults have to ask everyone for something as well. Staying in the chair position that long with 200 plus pound "kids" plopping on your lap is no picnic. Likewise, the adults sitting on the little kids laps require them to carefully balance their weight in a very low position. Imagine really low, funny shizentai stances!
This year the class surprised us by presenting Sensei Kim and me with hand-decorated karate ornaments and a Christmas tree. Seeing the originality and detail in each ornament made us feel very loved and blessed. Students often thank the sensei in our dojo for teaching them, but the truth is that we, the sensei, are the lucky ones. We get to train and have fun with an amazing group of people. We are part of this extended family based on trust, respect and caring. I can't think of a better Christmas present to wish for than that.

Seikikai Martial Arts continues to be healthy and thriving with locations at Olympium, Maingate, Christ the King Church and Mill Valley. We look forward to a new year of reflection and growth.
To greet the Christmas spirit, two large baskets were donated to The Basketeers ‘to support women in new beginnings’, on behalf of Seikikai Martial Arts.
The shelters could easily find groups willing to buy Christmas gifts for children, but their mothers seemed to have been forgotten. By supporting the mothers, they will, in turn, find the strength to create new lives for themselves and their children and not return to the abuser, and will feel stronger for their children. In 2000, it started with 14 baskets and in 2013 we supported 47 women's shelters in southwestern Ontario and British Columbia with a total of 1,329 beautifully wrapped baskets. http://www.basketeers.ca

I want to acknowledge Marianne Chenard from our Edmonton Dojo who attends our Ryerson Dojo whenever she travels to Toronto on business. She has served as an Ambassador between our dojos and I find the relationship rewarding. The following are snippets from some email correspondence this past fall that illustrates the benefits of visiting other dojo’s.
Marianne always sends me an email with her Sensei Andre Beauregard, 5th Dan copied. My response in her September email was: "... I answered the email quickly today because of work so I do not think my enthusiasm came through! I get very excited when I hear we are having a visitor! But when I hear its Marianne, I am ecstatic! Marianne, you are a Trooper! Diligent and determined and you soak up teachings like a dry sponge (a compliment)!"
Sometime after the September visit, an email from Sensei Andre came to me; I am sharing this because I appreciate the Chenard family's dedication to Wado-Kai karate.
"Marianne’s son, Christian, was just awarded his Shodan-Ho a few days ago and her daughter, Gabrielle, received her green belt. Her whole family, husband Charles and their two children, are extremely devoted to karate. So, it is no wonder that she also visits the Ryerson club. It is also good for her to be exposed to other great sensei . Teach her new stuff…"
And then, after her mid-November trip, in early December Marianne wrote:
"Good evening Sensei. I hope you are well. I was humbled to receive my brown belt last night. Your tips on fighting technique have made a huge difference. So I thank you again. In the photo are my kids Christian (junior Shodan-Ho) and Gabrielle (green belt) along with Sensei Andre and me. Take care and have a wonderful holiday season ."
Keep up the great work out there Sensei Andre Beauregard and Team. I will be visiting someday when the snow and ice melts to warm sunshine. > Sensei Leaton Bernard

The following are comments from Sensei Ron.
It’s hard to realise that I have been in karate for 32 years and 23 of them leading the Port Perry Wado Kai Karate Club.
I want to thank my wife Roseann for her continuing encouragement and support for 32 years, from the time my sons,
Ryan, Neil, and I started on our karate journey until my retirement in December 2015.
A thank you to Sensei Robb for your leadership in my early years of karate. What you taught me then helped me to
become a leader in our club when this leadership opportunity was offered to me. Thank you to Sensei Dave Manara for his help, support and confidence in me as Club Head of PPWK. His mentoring over the years has helped me keep our club open in Port Perry. To both of these gentlemen, I owe a great deal of respect and gratitude.
Thank you to my great instructors for their support over many years; and especially for their help and support during my health challenges. Thank you, Sensei!
Sensei Frank Murphy, Jan Longo, and Russ Gowan, Sempai Nancy Rickard and Antonio Pena, you have been an
awesome support group and I am proud to have you as friends.
Thank you to all the students, Club Heads, and members of the Yudansha that I have met and known over these many years. Your support and friendship is greatly appreciated.
A special thanks to Sensei Ron Sheyan for his friendship and help as the “Travelin’ Karate Instructor”, visiting us on a
regular basis for senior belt training before he started his club in Brooklin. Sensei Ron also set up and maintains our website.
As I move into retirement, I realize that my years of karate have left me with many treasured and fond memories of my Karate Family that will last me a lifetime. > In Harmony, Sensei Ron

OUR CONDOLENCES
It is with great sadness that I am letting you know about the passing of one of our students, Spencer Bedell, on January 4, 2016. I will remember him as a kind, generous, soft spoken man and a pleasure to have as a student. (Spencer trained in the late ‘80’s/early ‘90’s in Port Perry until he went to college. He reconnected with Port Perry Wado-Kai in 2013. He attended the Training Camp in 2014 and transferred to Brooklyn-Whitby in the fall of 2014).
Services for Spencer were held on January 10th at Lowe and Lowe Funeral Home in Port Perry.
The family had asked for friends to share a happy memorable moment you had with Spencer so it could be made into a memory book of his life. > Sensei Ron Sheyan
