Each year, many of us make New Year’s resolutions ... and quite a few of us don’t keep them for long. Let this year be the year you make yourself proud and keep your resolutions — no matter what they are.

If your resolution is to try something new, turn straight to page 12. This month’s feature outlines myriad new things to try with help from Family & MWR. From joining a bowling league to getting your scuba certification, take the challenge to try something new!

Want to spend more time with your Family? Share a meal at one of our great eateries (page 6), watch a free movie at McChord Theater (page 8) or make adventure a Family affair with the Outdoor Recreation program (page 22).

Desiree Flores, a Family member liv-

Idol in the fall and is proud to repre-

Flores, who is 22 years old, lives

with her father, Maj. Antonio Flores,

the opportunity and regret it later on

in life.

“I’m extremely excited to be repre-

senting the JBLM community,” Flores

says. “My father started his ROTC

advanced camp back at Fort Lewis in

1997 and is, ironically, finishing up

his military career at JBLM as he is

retiring the summer of 2015. So JBLM

holds a special spot in my and my

Family’s heart and I’m proud to be

representing.”

Season XIV’s judges are Harry

AWARD-WINNING AUTHOR ANN BAUSUM beautifully brings to life the story of one of the most celebrated dogs of the 20th century. Weaving the harrowing account of the Yankee Division’s service in World War I with the very human story of a man and his dog, Bausum puts you in the trenches and on the front lines. This compelling account will ensure that Stubby’s story does not fade away, and it reminds readers of the magic that can happen when a bond is formed between a human and a dog.

By Staff Sgt. Jennifer Spradlin, 19th Public Affairs Detachment

he library was dressed for a party:

garland draped along the shoul-

ders of bookshelves, a tall tree with red

and gold ornaments standing guard

in the computer area, seasonal music

playing — quietly, of course –— for the

milling crowd of Service Members and

civilians.

Cheer was in abundance at Grand-

staff Library Holiday Open House

Dec. 10 as people met at the refresh-

ment table and free book area to

celebrate. The open house is one of two

annual events held at JBLM to recog-

nize library patrons and introduce new-

comers to the programs and amenities

available to the community.

“This is about giving back to the

Service Members and civilians who

come to the library. It’s our way of say-

ing thank you and happy holidays,”

says Jane Cherney, a librarian who has

worked at Grandstaff for nine years.

On average, more than 1,000 visitors

pass through the doors of the library on

any given day. With the constant flux

of new Families and Service Members

arriving, there’s always some who don’t

understand all the library provides.

“The library’s role is changing. Ten

years ago we were more focused on

books,” says Cherney. “With the evolu-

tion of electronics, we have branched

more into DVDs for pleasure, audio books

for long-distance commuters and our

computers with Internet access.”

The library has also expanded into

the realm of the electronic book. Cher-

ney said they are happy to help people

learn the new technology for digital

book reading.

Not that the library has gone away

completely from traditional books,

which is good news for Families like the

Sassers. Erica Sasser, a military spouse,

said she and her daughter make weekly

trips to the library for school reading

projects.

“It’s very convenient for us, and it

saves us money, since we don’t have

to purchase the books,” says Sasser. “I

would recommend the library to people

who haven’t stopped by. I just found

out about the Family storytime program

myself, and I’m really excited about it.”

During Family storytime at Book

Patch (located inside Grandstaff), every

Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. and 3 p.m.,

children read a new book and work on

craft projects. Sasser says it will be a

great way for her Family to make new

friends.

has to offer, stop by 2109 N. 10th St.

here are many little ways to

enlarge your child’s world.

Love of books is the best of all.” Jac-

queline Kennedy Onassis, the former

first lady of the United States, would be

pleased to know that JBLM libraries offer

the Winter Reading Program for children

each year. This year’s program ends Mon-

day, Jan. 5.

“The Winter Reading Program encour-

ages children to continue reading during

the winter break, and it gives them some-

thing fun to do,” says Isabel Mora-Shafer, a

prior Air Force Service Member and now a

children’s specialist at Grandstaff Library.

Not only can participants acquire end-

less amounts of knowledge from reading,

but the program also offers a prize of

choice to each participant who reads 15

books. For older readers, the requirement

is to read any chapter book of approxi-

mately 300 pages.

Prizes adorn the library’s wall, waiting

to be plucked, and range from Teenage

Mutant Ninja Turtles toys to stuffed ani-

mals. But what if you want to read more

than 15 books?

“If they accomplish the first round,

they are more than welcome to complete

it one more time,” says Mora-Shafer of

the program for which 89 participants

have already signed up.

She says Rick Riordan’s “The Blood of

Olympus,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and the

“Myth-O-Mania” series are among some of

the popular choices participants are checking

out. Many of the books were specifically

ordered based on recommendations, some-

thing at which Mora-Shafer works diligently.

“If there’s something they’re interested

in that I don’t have, I quickly order it for

our collection,” says Mora-Shafer.

For the younger readers, Family Story

Time at the library is an additional way

for the children to complete the 15-book

challenge. “It encourages them to read; it

encourages them to discover new things

that they may be interested in — discover

new authors,” says Mora-Shafer, who also

conducts arts and crafts after reading to

the children. “It broadens their minds; it

encourages them to read for life.”

Welcome with a resolution you can keep!

Feelin’ good

By Arianne McConchie RD, RDN, Health Educator

at JBLM’s Armed Forces Wellness Center

he holiday season is meant to be

a time of fun and joyfulness, but it

can quickly become a time of stress and

unhealthy behavior.

Wellness and optimal health isn’t

achieved by just eating well one day or

getting one good night of sleep. It’s ac-

complished by eating nutritionally dense

foods, reducing stress, getting quality

sleep and incorporating physical activity

most of the time.

By following the simple tips below, you

can start the year off right, welcoming

wellness into your everyday routine.

Nutrition• Eat early, then eat often. Eat breakfast

within the first hour of waking to help

wake up your metabolism. Then eat

every 3–4 hours to maintain good blood

sugar control and keep hunger at bay.

When we go longer than 4–5 hours

without eating, we tend to make poor

dietary choices in the hopes to satiate our

hunger. Be sure to incorporate healthy

snacks to combat the urge to hit up the

vending machine or order fast food.

• Moderation. Balance the good with

the bad. You don’t need to write off

Christmas cookies or pass on the pecan

pie, but enjoy these foods in modera-

tion. Practice the 80/20 rule. If you eat

healthy, nutritious foods 80 percent of

the time, there should be space in your

diet to allow for discretionary foods

10–20 percent of the time. Remember

alcohol is a discretionary food that is very calorie dense, especially when served as a mixed drink. Try to limit your alcohol consumption by drinking water or a low-calorie drink between alcoholic drinks. The less you drink, the better you’ll feel the next day!

• Practice the plate method of eating. The plate method provides us a guideline to eat nutritiously at all meals and snacks. Think about filling half of your 6–7 inch plate with fruits and vegetables, a quarter with whole grains or starchy vegetables and a quarter with lean protein. In-clude a serving of dairy or other calci-um-rich food. You can use this method at your holiday meal or work banquets to keep your calorie intake in check while maintaining a balanced plate.

• Focus on weight maintenance. Tryingto achieve weight loss during the holi-days may seem like you’re fighting a losing battle. Instead, try to focus your attention on weight maintenance to prevent weight gain during the holidays. Tracking food intake on apps or websites can be helpful in tracking calories-in verses calories-out. Also, you can visit the Armed Forces Wellness Center at Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center to learn how many calories you should

be eating to maintain your weight. In addition to testing your resting metabol-ic rate, the AFWC also teaches a nutri-

tion class, “Up Your Metabolism.”

Stress• Make a checklist. Checklists help us

prioritize our time, getting things

Become a healthier version of yourself. With JBLM fitness centers and the Armed Forces Wellness Center, you can do it!

‘All That Glitters’: the 9th annual JBLM Aerobathon

Saturday, Jan. 10, 9 a.m.–noon Soldiers Field HouseJoin us for the 9th annual JBLM

Aerobathon as we ring in the New Year with “All That Glitters.” The event is Saturday, Jan. 10 at Soldiers Field House from 9 a.m.–noon.

Here’s your chance to show us what you’ve got — decorate your workout clothes with as much or as little bling as you like for a chance to win a prize (the top three outfits will win!).

It’s a bright, shiny New Year, so have fun and celebrate! The aerobathon is open to everyone ages 13 and older, so invite your Family and friends to come experience the fun with you. (Ages 13–15 must be accompanied by a parent.)

This year, instructors from Jensen Family Health & Fitness Center will take the spot-light as they lead you through a fun-filled, three-hour program that includes Zumba, cardio kickboxing, Insanity and PiYO.

Door prizes and refreshments are included, so get fit, stay cool and have fun. Register for $10 by Friday, Jan. 2 to guarantee an event T-shirt. Go online to JBLMmwrRegistration.com.

Welcome with a resolution you can keep!

done in an orderly fashion. Start your holiday checklist early to give yourself plenty of time to get everything done without feeling stressed or anxious.

• Practice getting into a coherent state.Practice stress management techniques on your own or visit the AFWC’s bio-feedback lab. During a biofeedback ap-pointment, you’ll sit in a massage chair while monitoring your heart rate vari-ance. Your HRV is a good indicator as to how anxious or calm (coherent) you are. The staff will walk you through several stress-management techniques to reduce your stress levels and bring you in to a better coherent state.

• Create realistic expectations. Youmay feel that you can do it all. You may even try. You may want to bake 12 batches of different cookies, make the holiday meal by yourself, wrap every single gift, write holiday cards and attend (or host!) socials while working full-time and chauffeuring three kids to after-school programs. Although these expectations may seem feasible, they may not be realistic. Outsource where you can. Ask holiday guests to bring a dish to pass, use the stores that gift wrap, have your Family help you make holiday cards and only attend the social

functions that fit into your schedule.

Sleep• Aim for 7–9 hours of sleep a night.

Sleep is the No. 1 biological process that

the brain requires to maintain optimal

cally the first item sacrificed in a time

crunch. During sleep, vital body func-

tions occur, which include hormone

control (appetite/hunger, growth and

stress hormones) and immune function.

• Practice good sleep hygiene. Limit

blue screen time before bed, such as TV,

Kindle, computer or cell phone time.

Avoid drinking caffeine or alcohol

before bed and allow time to unwind in

the evening before going to sleep.

• Take naps. Power naps can be helpful

to recharge our battery if they are less

than 45 minutes in length.

• Attend a sleep class. The AFWC offers

a class that focuses on methods to im-

prove the quality and quantity of sleep.

Physical Activity• Aim for 30–60 minutes of physical

activity on most days. The American

College of Sports Medicine recom-

mends that Americans get at least 30

minutes of physical activity most days

a week for good health. If your goal is

weight maintenance or weight loss, 60–

90 minutes most days is recommended.

Aim for a combination of cardiovascu-

lar exercise as well as strength training

for optimal health benefits.

• Make it fun. If you embark on a fitness

program that includes activities you

don’t enjoy or find too difficult, you’re

most likely going to give up. Start slow

and increase intensity and time by a few

minutes each week. Try new activities

until you find something that you like

— Zumba, group fitness, recreational

sports or workout videos you can do at

home. Find a workout buddy. This will

help hold you accountable for the days

you are feeling less than motivated.

• Create goals. It’s easy to let our fitness

wane during the holidays. Go into the

holiday season with realistic goals. You

may not have time to work out every

day, so make a goal to work out at least

every other day. If you’re strapped

for time, maybe you can fit in three

10-minute walks during the day (which

is just as effective as walking for 30

consecutive minutes).

Following these simple steps during the

next few months will help you stay on track

for optimal health and wellness as we start

the New Year.

nearly 40 of whom took the plunge into

the cold water.

“With this run, the main focus is to

bring something different to the Families

of JBLM. We want to spice it up; we don’t

want to just run,” says Stephanie Parr,

the recreation assistant in the intramural

sports office. “We want to make sure that

each event has its own feature, which in

this event will be the dip. In between all

of our usual fun runs, the best thing to

ing and new like this race here.”

Col. Charles H. Hodges, JBLM command-

er, who brought the first-ever zombie 5k

run to the base last November, was pleased

to see another unique activity offered.

“This is a new concept and we always

want to be fresh in our ideas. This is a

chance for people to come out and do

something a little bit different than what

they’ve done before,” says Hodges. “JBLM

is known for innovation and having a

great imagination. It’s good we can em-

brace that mindset throughout the entire

community.”

Several Families ran together and some

children were experienced enough to

run the 2k by themselves. Seven-year-old

Kayla Conriquez runs weekly with her

mother, Amanda Bennett, and she ran

the JBLM Zombie Apocalypse 5k run by

herself. So naturally she ran the 2k solo.

Conriquez said the race was fun and

plans to do several races next year after

completing three this year.

Two brothers, Ari and Eli Vitor, ages 12

and 8, ran the race together and braved the

freezing water to complete every event.

“I found it fun even though it’s cold. I

don’t regret going in the cold water,” says

older brother Ari.

“I liked the water part a lot and wasn’t

scared to go in,” says Eli with a shivering

smile.

Despite the race calendar becoming

extremely full for the 2015 race season,

we’re always looking for new possibilities

to add variety, explains Parr.

“There’s another race in the works for

next summer, but I can’t give any infor-

mation about that one,” she hints. “We

want to surprise JBLM with that race. It’s

going to be great.”
