A Trip to the Holy Land

Dear Grace Covenant Family,

As some of you are aware, I am currently part of a pastor’s group called Macedonian

Ministry (see the mission statement on page 10). Macedonian Ministry cohorts are locat-

ed in a few cities scattered throughout the South. My cohort is comprised of ten ordained

Teaching Elders serving congregations in the Presbytery of the James. This cohort com-

mits to meet monthly for three consecutive years. During our gatherings, we participate in

congregational leadership training facilitated by retired Presbyterian minister George

Conway. Alongside the excellent monthly training, each cohort is given an opportunity at some point during

their three years together to take a trip to the Holy Land for two weeks. Our cohort’s trip is this January 5-19!

Throughout our trip, the focus will be on spiritual pilgrimage. We will be visiting numerous biblical sites as

we read and pray through the Scriptures that correspond to each site. In particular, we will visit the likes of

Sepphoras, Nazareth, the Sea of Galilee, Jerusalem, the Mount of Olives, Jericho, and Bethlehem. I have

never been to the Holy Land, and I am particularly excited to walk the terrain about which I regularly read,

teach, and preach.

I will miss you all! Being away for two weeks is quite a stretch of time. Here are few things to know, howev-

er, while I am away:

1. We are safe. The folks who lead the trip have led dozens of trips over the years, and anytime they

sense there is any danger at all they cancel the trip. They have not canceled the trip and have told us

that statistically-speaking the most dangerous moments of our whole trip will be our drive to and from

the Richmond airport.

2. The four primary trip leaders are Rev. George Conway, Rev. Dr. Tom Tewell, Rev. Dr. Sue Westfall,

and Dr. Max Miller. Dr. Miller is a retired from Emory as Professor Emeritas. Since 1980, he has led

dozens of trips throughout the Middle East.

January 25 in Worship

On Sunday, January 25, the deacons and ruling elders of the class of 2017 will be ordained and installed during worship. We will also dedicate our 100th anniversary banner in that same service. We hope you can make it as we gather in praise of our God, in support of the leaders whom God has called, in grati-

tude for the first 100, and in hope for what God will do in the next 100.

Below is the Officer Structure for 2015. Please feel free to contact any of our leaders with comments and questions. As well, listen for how God is leading you to support them and their ministry in the coming

year.

Boaz & Ruth: 4th Saturday Brunch, Jan. 24 We will be switching our monthly outing to

Fire House 15 restaurant to Saturday morn-

ing! Fire House 15 is open from 8:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. on Saturdays, and people are welcome to join in

at any point, but this month we will be gathering there at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, January 24. No official

RSVP’s necessary, but if you plan on joining us, please contact Jessica Reveley so that we can get a

rough head count ([email protected]). With the switch to Saturday, we are also hoping to be able

to include service opportunities with Boaz & Ruth in the future, so keep your eyes out for those dates.

Blood Drive on Good Friday (April 3, 2015)! In partnership with the Red Cross,

we will be hosting a blood drive at Grace Covenant on Good

Friday (April 3) this spring! We are working to get a head

count of potential donors, so if you are interested, please con-

tact Nelson Reveley ([email protected] or 387-8094).

And if you are unable to give yourself, you can always find a replacement or help volunteer. As we

remember the gift of redeemed life Christ has given to us, all participation is welcome and encouraged

as we help give the gift of life to others through blood donation.

Also, if you have had experience with organizing blood drives in the past or would like to help with

the preparation for this one, please contact Nelson as well.

Congratulations! We celebrate and congratulate Hannah Coltrain on her re-

cent engagement to James “Jimmy” W. Hamrick, Jr. They were officially engaged

on Christmas morning! No wedding date has been set as of yet.

Baby Girl! Caroline Elizabeth Kuipers was born to Julia and Josh Kuipers on

Thursday, December 25. She arrived weighing 8.9 lbs. and 21.5 inches long. They

are grateful for this incredible Christmas gift!

POJYO Movie Night Come out an check out a movie with the group on January 4,

2015. We will be watching "Noah," having some discussion

afterward and eating together as always. Contact Christopher

or Katherine Baird for more info at 359-2463 or 355-4703.

Grace Notes Deadline: January 21 is the deadline for

submissions for our February edition.

Upcoming Renovation "Jesus welcomed them, and spoke to them about the kingdom of

God…And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked

up to heaven, and blessed and broke them, and gave them to

the disciples to set before the crowd” - Luke 9:11; 16

GCPC is centrally located in the Fan, and we have been

entrusted with stewarding a unique property that offers

much for the community, members, and CDC families

alike. In particular, the Fellowship Hall is the area in

which we gather most regularly with one another for

meals, discipleship training, and special events. At its

best, it offers a welcoming space into which we can

invite others to join us in our following of Jesus.

Moreover, it serves the CDC children throughout the

year as they take time for recreation in that space. Cur-

rently, however, the Fellowship Hall is in need of an up-

date if we want to continue using the space in a way that

is truly hospitable to the neighbors we have been called

to reach.

In light of this, a small group of church members (Cal

Gray, Carson Price, Cheryl Jacobs, and Jake Savage),

brought together under Bobby’s guidance, with the ses-

sion’s approval, has been researching options for a Fel-

lowship Hall renovation in 2015. In December, the

Building Fund approved funding for this project at the

request of session.

At this point, the renovation committee is gathering final

bids from contractors and making plans for the renova-

tion to happen during the summer of 2015. When a few

more details are in place (the contractor, official dates,

general layout plans) the renovation committee will pre-

sent to the session and the congregation an update about

where things are. They will invite input at that time as

well.

Thank you to all who have contributed to the Building

Fund over the years, and thank you to the members of

the Fund. Without your generosity, none of this would

be possible.

lack access to clean drinking water. Its mission is to empower local leaders to build, operate, and sustain sys-

tems that provide clean water and health education.

We at Grace Covenant are pursuing a partnership with a local community in southern Honduras -- Agalteca

Presbyterian Church -- and we are looking for people interested in being part of Grace Covenant's team for

well, I hope that I am able to share continually from what I learn so that you might be edified as well. I

will remain in prayer for you. Finally, if you are looking for guidance on how to pray for the Holy

Psalm 122

I was glad when they said to me,

“Let us go to the house of the LORD!”

Our feet are standing

within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem—built as a city

that is bound firmly together. To it the tribes go up,

the tribes of the LORD,

as was decreed for Israel,

to give thanks to the name of the LORD. For there the thrones for judgment were set up,

the thrones of the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:

“May they prosper who love you. Peace be within your walls,

and security within your towers.” For the sake of my relatives and friends

I will say, “Peace be within you.” For the sake of the house of the LORD our God,

I will seek your good.

The Mission of Macedonian Ministry

Macedonian Ministry seeks to address the crisis of the church in North America not by talking about the issues

but rather by going into communities and walking alongside pastors in their challenges and struggles. Our

mission is to serve the church of Jesus Christ by helping pastors become more faithful, effective, and efficient

leaders. Our core conviction is that supporting and equipping pastors is a strategic way to renew congrega-

tions and transform communities. Just as the apostle Paul responded to the man in his dream who asked him

to “come over to Macedonia and help us” (Acts 16:9), our calling is to respond to the pressing needs of pas-

tors and “come over and help” them as they strive to have vibrant ministries in the name of Jesus Christ. Jan. 6 (Tuesday) -Arrive 3:15 p.m. Renaissance Hotel near the Airport

GCPC,

I would like to start by thanking you all for your won-

derful hospitality during our combined Christmas reception this

year! Everything worked out wonderfully; the children sang, the

food was terrific, and the company was even better! It was so

nice to celebrate Jesus’ first night here on the earth with our en-

larged family. Special thanks to the food committee for helping

us plan the menu; they had a lot more work cut out for them than

usual! We hope to continue to find ways to celebrate God’s love and Jesus’

salvation through fellowship with all the people involved at Grace Cove-

nant!

So now that Christmas is over, we’ll jump into our winter activi-

ties! January’s theme is all about learning about winter. Children will learn

what kind of weather we get in winter and how to dress for it. They’ll get to

experiment with hot and cold temperatures (not too hot!) and see how these

temperatures shape and change our environment during this season. They’ll

identify winter plants and how they change when it’s cold. They’ll discover

how animals adapt to the colder weather when they learn about hibernation, migration, and adapta-

tions like thicker fur. They’ll even compare how we as humans adapt like the animals, and how

different people in different parts of the world adapt in different ways. And while we as adults al-

ways hate for people to be inconvenienced, children have the luxury of hoping for snow without

worrying about those minor details! So we hope they can have at least a few of those wonderful

winter wonderland experiences and throw a snowball or two!
