We are starting off the New Year with a focus on moving Westfield forward! Councilor Sullivan recognized the service of Fire Captain Rebecca Boutin for actions with disregard to her own personal safety to save the life of fellow Firefighter Steven Makos on March 30, 2012. He thanked Fire Chief Regan, as well as the entire Westfield Fire Department, for their extraordinary service to the City of Westfield. Captain Boutin thanked the Council for this Proclamation and explained that it was an honor to receive it. She also thanked the Chief for providing excellent training and thanked all of her fellow firefighters for contributing to a successful department. The design will take about a year. The Western Avenue reconstruction project is near 10% design with a few more public meetings to be scheduled. If you will be effected and have an interest make sure you come to those meetings. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2015. A summary of improvements can be found on our City web site: http://www.cityofwestfield.org/index. aspx?NID=378 I have recently signed a contract that will start the design for the reconstruction of East Mountain Road from Route 20 to Route 202. It will take approximately 18 months to 24 months to design. A proposed construction date has not been set.

I want to thank everyone who came out in November and December to do their shopping in town. There are a number of places to go to in Downtown Westfield and I plan to highlight more of them each month with our show “It’s Your City” on Cable TV 15, and in the monthly newsletter.

Now for some updates:

An update on the Senior Center – it has been a long hurdle to select a site and to gather information to develop a concept plan for what the new Senior Center should look like. The site selected is on Noble Street. We have submitted a petition to probate court that is asking for permission to use the site for the senior center. I am hopeful to get a court hearing soon so that we can get going on the design.

Two legs of Route 187 will begin reconstruction starting in 2013 and continuing into 2014. The first leg from the bridge to the Agawam line and the next leg, from route 20 to the bridge. Along with that will be the next phase of the Columbia Greenway Rail Trail which will start again this Spring and be completed by July 2013 and will extend the route to the Big Y on East Silver Street. Pochassic Street Bridge is also being worked on, although you don’t see much of the work. In the next 6 – 8 weeks you’ll start to see work on the exterior barring any weather events.

Pilgrim Candle proudly celebrates over 20 years of candle making in Westfield. Beautiful, aromatic candles and an abundant gift selection fill the shelves at Pilgrim Candle. Showcasing unique local products such as maple syrups, popcorn and relishes complement the Candle-Gift Shop. Over 20 years ago, Joe Shibley, owner of Pilgrim Candle, knew that Westfield was where he wanted to set up a Candle Factory. His primary focus going forward was to hand make candles for local gift shops to sell. Wholesale Marketing and Trade Shows was the next step in building retail accounts. Pilgrim opened its first factory store within a few months of the Wholesale launch. Countless hours were spent researching the market, and experimenting with candle making. It’s always nice to know that all their candles are made right on site. The Shibleys and Pilgrim Candle have always provided highly scented quality products, and as a result, have built a loyal customer base near and far!

Fond childhood memories always stuck with Joe, especially when he was brainstorming his business plans and potential business names. He spent one night writing a list of different businesses he thought would be a good fit. A pair of candles hanging off a floor lamp nearby triggered the idea of candle making and sparked a childhood memory of a 6th grade field trip to Plymouth plantation, and the candle dipping demonstration that the pilgrim women were showing. Alas, Pilgrim Candle was the name he added to the list and later chose as his business name! In addition to being very involved in their business, Donna and Joe Shibley are proud parents of two wonderful children who they adopted from Lebanon. Donna spent a total of two years in Lebanon in her efforts with getting the children to the United States. She depended on her dedicated family, friends and staff to operate the retail division while she was away, and is so grateful for them. An exciting highlight for Pilgrim Candle is their vendor nights. These vendor fairs are held regularly right at Pilgrim candle and are open to the community to join and to participate in. Several authors, artists and craftspeople bring their very best to share with everyone. It’s the perfect time experience all the talent that is right in our backyard.

The Shibleys certainly have made a commitment to Westfield. Even with the hardship of the bridge construction, they believe in Westfield and being a part of this wonderful community. Donna says she has a hopeful and optimistic outlook for 2013. She says she would like to share the Pilgrim Candle Company Market experience with the community and to have a new opportunity for re-growth. She feels that building awareness of Pilgrim Candle Company Market place is an important aspect of her future outlook. Donna says, “we make sure to satisfy every customer & create great memories each and every time a customer comes in!” Pilgrim Candle plans to shine and light up the New Year with their annual candle sale in January! Donna, Joe and the Pilgrim Candle team welcome each and everyone to their exquisite candle and gift shop!

Team work and strong sense of dedication from the entire family is what makes Violet Sirotcenkiene’s bakery so special! Since opening day on November 21, 2011, Violet comes in daily to bake, cook and prepare her food. Violet’s husband comes in daily to knead the dough from scratch with his hands. Violet says the task of kneading dough requires the strength from a man’s hands. Violet’s Mother also recently came from Lithuania for the holidays to help the family in their beginning stages of business, and to share her unique Lithuanian secret recipes. Meat and veggie pies complemented by fresh soups, breads, delicious cakes and cookies fill the bakery and add to the wonderful aroma. These are some of the wonderful European inspired goodies that are made fresh each and every day. The delicious, hearty meat and veggie pies come in several exciting flavors; Beef, pork, chicken, cottage cheese and spinach, mushroom and cheese, and cabbage. This is the perfect, healthy alternative to fast food. Violet proudly says there are no artificial ingredients, and that they don’t use any soda or yeast in their dough. Lithuanian style whole wheat bread with sunflower and flax seeds is also a very healthy option since it promotes digestive health.

Especially with these chilly New England

winter months, warm, hearty soups heat up

Violet’s kitchen. Delicious chicken noodle,

creamy mushroom, sauerkraut & bean, barley

& pickle and beet root and beans soups are

made each week from scratch. Violet changes

her soup selections four times a week to

maintain variety. Have a sweet tooth that needs to be satisfied? Violet has just the answer. She makes all her own baked goods from scratch. If you like cookies, she makes peanut butter, ricotta cheese, and oatmeal! And if you enjoy cakes, you must try Violet’s cheesecake & carrot cake, which is made from 2/3 carrot, walnut and cinnamon. Westfield now offers another alternative to take out! Her current promotion that she is running is “Buy 5 pies, and get 1 free,” and “free tea or coffee with any pastry purchase.” Pre orders are always welcome and Violet will be sure to give special discounts! Violet welcomes everyone to stop in, say hello and says to treat yourself to some samples and homemade take out! Violet’s bakery is conveniently located right on 83 B Main St, across from Walgreens Pharmacy! She would like to invite everyone to attend the Grand Opening celebration on Friday, January on 25, 2013 at 11 am.
