“Living is a form of not being sure, not knowing what next or how. The artist never entirely knows. We guess. We may be wrong, but we take leap after leap in the dark.” Agnes De Mille

By now you know with each new season at the Center we dip our toes into a new and exciting world that we’ve yet to explore. We consider it a form of “leaping” in the dark because we never know exactly how each idea will unfold and we certainly don’t know what’s next. But one thing is for sure, when we glance back at whatever we create, whether it’s a new film series or a window display, we ALWAYS find ourselves amazed by the process and the “work of art” that is ultimately created by the minds and hands of people who are passionate about creating a remarkable experience. Whether it’s a team of people redefining an organization like ours or an artist creating a new work, common perception has it that their creativity or innovation comes in one grand spurt of genius. However, in our world, it looks and feels more like a colorful continuum that involves lots of questions, lots of thinking, more thinking and then loooooooooong periods of waiting. Then the muse lands on your shoulder and tells you it’s time to “hop on board” before you miss the train. It’s only after you’re fully captivated by the “AHA” moment that the real work begins. This is when you get to breathe life into an idea, watch it hatch, help it grow, and then fall into bed completely and blissfully exhausted by the process. Of course, you look forward to spending the next morning relaxing and basking in the glory of finishing the masterpiece, but instead find yourself jolted awake by a surge of new ideas pounding in your head to get out. By then you know it’s time to pack up your gear again so you’ll be prepared for the challenge of starting over. Again. And again and again. Not for the weak or weary for sure! Courage and persistence are key to the process, but the one essential ingredient is the artist. The artist who dared to engage in the process to begin with. The one who took the leap never knowing what was next or what they would create. As we celebrate the new year, our team is geared up and ready with fresh ideas designed to elevate the arts and the artists who continue to bring color and texture to life. This year I personally resolve to mindfully and generously extend my thanks to the artists that surround us every day and stay committed to creating artful experiences. This gratitude extends to the Center’s staff and board of directors, each of whom I have the pleasure of working alongside, and who inspire me by challenging my thinking, throwing a new idea into the pot, or introducing new concepts that have ignited their curiosity. As always, it’s a full season at the Center. We’ve created many ways for you to introduce your inner artist to new media, new techniques, and other fascinating artists. For those of you who wear your “I’m not creative” button on your chest, toss it in the can and come play with us at the Center. Join us. Uncover new talents. Expand the ones you already have. Take the leap and start living the creative life!

Happy New Year

SJAMES MICHALOPOULOSJANUARY 21 - MARCH 9, 2012Celebrated New Orleans artist, James Michalopoulos, brings his vibrant and captivating art to the Center for A Night in New Orleans. Best known for his colorful architectural renderings of local venues, his work gives his subject a life of their own. Michalopoulos is the creator of New Orleans Sugar Cane Rum, was the Director of the House of Blues Productions, and has been the featured artist for the New Orleans Jazz Fest four times. Collectors of his work include Sharon Stone, Bruce Willis, Bonnie Raitt, Jackson Brown, and John Goodman.

KEVIN LEVINEJANUARY 21 - MARCH 9, 2012See Louisiana from the coastal point of view. Kevin Levine’s photography takes you on a ride along the Mississippi River from the seat of a river barge. A boat pilot himself, Kevin began experimenting with photography and the use of color saturation, contrast and special effects. Kevin’s work brings focus to the old forgotten structures that are in plain view, but rarely noticed.
