• January 2012 gave us 19 instructional days x 4 blocks; the equivalent of 2 blocks closed for TAC sessions. Summary – There were 72 instructional blocks.

• The media center conducted 91 classes. A media specialist visited 8 classes outside the library.

Literacy Activities/Reading Advocacy

• EBook/Overdrive Promotion o Significant new interest in our Overdrive Ebook portal due to Christmas gifts. We

have given out bookmarks and informational sheets to help students connect and download off campus. Students who brought equipment that could work wirelessly were connected and assisted with checking out ebooks on site.

• BYOB Book Club Thursday, January 18, 2012; 22 students participated in the “Bring Your Own Book” club meeting where they interacted with the SCPL Headquarters Branch Teen Librarian to eat and discuss popular titles. Melanie Dillard acted as the DHS Library sponsor for the group/club meetings held during each lunch.

• The English Class Visual Book Report projects were loaded onto our new digital frame at the desk. These act as promotional aids for recommending titles.

• The Frame also runs announcements related to the next BYOB meeting date and the DHS top ten books checked out.

School/Community Involvement and Support:

• Cathy Nelson attended the “I am College Bound” assembly sponsored by DHS Guidance and CDF Programs.

• Cathy Nelson attended the January 31 School-based Zumba session • Cathy Nelson & Melanie Dillard attended the W8 2 TXT Assembly.

Major Instructional Activities/Collaborations

Media Center:

Dorman’s  library  served  7662  students  during  the  month  of  December.

• English Department Anglo-Saxon webquests, quotations papers, Scavenge hunt orientation activity, I-Search; a few class Orientations for CP English 10 classes of students who did not have English first semester.

• Exceptional Child - Book checkouts for class sustained silent reading (SSR) • Social Studies – Presidential campaigns and scrapbooking current news articles; one

class (Crum) made political cartoons using Toon Doos for Major American Revolution conflicts; Anderson worked on her semi annual American Symbols project; Econ class worked on a “Purchasing a Car” project.

• Science – Etymology Webquest and project • Social Studies Classes (Gov’t and Civics) are working to create a scrapbook of the

presidential election candidates. Melanie Dillard worked with classes showing students how to find legitimate information through DISCUS as well as how to find up to date newspaper articles online. (Regnier, PG, Adkins)

Classroom Visits: • Visual Book Reports: Cathy Nelson began a string of sessions with 10th grade classes

doing sustained silent reading to give the student s some ideas for how to present their book through a visual book report. Ideas included collages and PosterMyWall.com, and time was spent modeling various components of the project including how to find appropriate images, how to cite the images used in the project, and how to layout the project. Cathy created the rubric classroom teachers will use for assessing. Cathy is pulling together the completed projects to assist students with their in class presentation. Cathy volunteered to assess parts of the projects. (Teacher for January: Donna Mayes)

• Susan Eleazer’s Visual Arts Classes worked with Cathy Nelson in the classroom and library to design a graphical cover to the Designs of Principles journal they must maintain throughout the semester. The students spent the next day in the library.

• Prezi: Cathy Nelson visited Katie Colwell’s English 11 Honors classes to overview the program as a presentation solution for their novel study. Students were shown tips, tricks, and ideas for using Prezi as a substitute for a PowerPoint. The students spent the next day in the library.

Needs:

• Coin operated copier – We have asked Christy Chessire to assist us in getting a new contract for a coin-operated machine. We still have this need.

Staffing:

• Jolene Barron was transitioned to office personnel; Karen West worked for approximately three weeks as library clerk. Currently the position is vacant.

Professional Activities

• Cathy Nelson attended the South Carolina Association of School Librarians January 14, 2012 Board Meeting, 10:00AM-1:30 PM, in Columbia, SC.

• Cathy Nelson attended the South Carolina Library Media Supervisor’s Section held in Columbia, SC as designee for Library Program Liaison Susan Cox January 23, 2012.

• Cathy Nelson attended the District Technology Committee after school January 23, 2012.

• Cathy Nelson participated in the online Classroom 2.0 Webinar featuring David Loertscher “Learning Commons 2.0: A New Look at Libraries” January 31, 2012

• The fourth DHS One Tool at a Time GBE professional development class in the series was Friday, January 27, postponed a week due to the SCLMS Supervisors Meeting. The session covered Google Reader. The class is open to any interested teacher, not just those opting to use it as a GBE. Cathy Nelson conducted this session. The class met each block in the DTV Studio.
