Letter From The Editor4

Here we are in January. The holidays are behind us and even though the days have begun to get longer again, we still face the Carolinas’ “winter” such as it is. In last month’s LFE I made a comment about “humbugging” through the holidays. It was before Christmas and a friend sent me an e-mail with a link to a video with a holiday greeting from the Carson School Of Management at the University of Minnesota (http://goo.gl/cRhIx) noting the contrast between this and the “Occupy” protesters. It was a flash mob in a common area and a young man with a saxophone walked up and started playing “Deck The Halls”. As the other singers from the school’s music departments came out of the crowd and joined in, it created a heart warming scene and I mentally agreed that this was much better example of today’s youth than the protesters projected. After watching the video I thought to myself that it made me feel good and that much of our news these days is focused on hard economic times, crime, and corruption and is really depressing. I wished to myself that I really would like to see more people involved in positive uplifting activities. Then it hit me! I just finished several weekends of toy runs with thousands of bikers joining together and through their actions with one voice saying, “It’s all about the kids”. Instantly, memories of hundreds of motorcycles with toys attached glistening in the sun flashed through my mind. There was no violence, no anger, no chanting, nothing but smiles, handshakes, and hugs from bik-ers with generous hearts willingly giving to try to help make someone else’s Christmas better. Instantly my heart swelled with pride and my eyes filled with tears at just the thought of the magnitude of the effort. I had witnessed the incarnation of love. I had unknowingly stood in the midst of angels – and it was YOU! Thank you all for your love and generosity. Thank you for what you have given to the children and to me. In spite of all the wickedness and danger in the world, you have demonstrated that there is still an abundance of goodness, kindness, and love. As I ride into 2012, I resolve to focus on whatever is true, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, and worthy of praise. I hope that you will, too.

Here’s wishing you and yours a Happy (and safe) New Year!

OUTER BANKS HARLEY-DAVIDSON®

OUTER BANKS BIKE WEEK™ • 21-29 April 2012

The Outer Banks BEST Kept Bikers’ Secret The cool ocean breezes, breath-taking scenic riding along over 100 miles of barrier islands and fantastic watering holes make Outer Banks Harley-Davidson® a rider’s destination, and home to one of the best spring rallies on the East Coast, Outer Banks Bike Week™. Outer Banks Harley-Davidson®, is located in Harbinger just two miles north of the Wright Brothers Memorial Bridge, the gateway to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. Outer Banks Harley-Davidson® is a full service dealership including Authorized Harley-Davidson® Rentals.

As the host dealership for Outer Banks Bike Week™, Outer Banks H-D® serves as the hub for rally activities. Several guided tours are provided by the Outer Banks H.O.G. Chapter on a daily basis, to include the “Run 4 The Ferry” ride. This 80 mile southern beaches excursion takes riders to places that pirates traveled 300 years ago such as the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (the tallest light house in the U.S.), and then for those who are interested, onto the Hatteras-Ocracoke Ferry to Ocracoke Island. Many describe the 30-40 minute ferry ride as just plain relaxing while they check out the endangered brown pelicans skydiving into the sea for food, or just letting the gentle NC ocean breeze take all their worries out to sea.

Other activities during Bike Week include the traditional activities such as bike shows, poker runs, vendors on-site as well as 9 other locations, live bands, Miss Bike Week bikini contests, tattoo contests, evening party spots, and yes, even cole-slaw wrestling. There is a little something for everyone. In town for the event every year is the H-D® Demo Fleet, where you can test ride a current model year H-D® motor-cycle. There are hundreds of miles of beachfront riding, or if you prefer, explore the marshlands south of Manteo.

One of the other area attractions is the Corolla Wild Horses. Until recent years, the Outer Banks of North Carolina were considered some of the most isolated and under-developed areas in the country. The Corolla Wild Horses are believed to have roamed over the past four centuries on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. There are also five historical lighthouses stretching along the 100 miles of coastline of the Outer Banks from the Currituck Lighthouse all the way down to Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Don’t forget, the Outer Banks are also home of the Wright Brothers and their historical first flight, and Jockey’s Ridge, the largest natural sand dune on the east coast.

Do You Believe?By: Mark Infield I bet that every one of you watched the 1947 classic “Mira-cle On 34th Street” sometime over the holidays. If you didn’t see it this year, I am betting that you have seen it in the past sometime. It is a story about a man named Kris Kringle who claims to be Santa Claus. The argument about his identity ends up in court, but the DA cannot prove that Kris Kringle isn’t Santa Claus. To seal the deal, the Post Office delivers 50,000 letters addressed to Santa Claus to the court as evidence. The case is dropped and everyone lives happily ever after. Now I know that this is just a movie, but why do people continue to watch it year after year? Is it because people really want to believe in Santa Claus? Kris Kringle said, “Oh, Christ-mas isn’t just a day, it’s a frame of mind” and I think that’s in-disputable. I happen to know a man who claims to be “Gunny Claus” and I think that he would agree that it IS a frame of mind. This frame of mind causes Gunny Clause to spend most of December each year appearing before and visiting with the children of our veterans. Who is Gunny Claus?...really. Gunny Claus is a Christmas-time Marine whose special duties take him to many places and always to search for kids who need him. He’s known to work with veterans throughout the year, some of whom are home-less, and families of veterans. Dressed in a red jacket fashioned after a US Marine uniform with Gunnery Sergeant stripes on the sleeve and campaign rib-bons on his chest, blue trousers with the traditional red stripe, and a straight brimmed hat with a polished brass Marine Corps emblem on the front, Gunny Clause looks and acts the part. He claims to be from the Marine Corps Base North Pole, Tactical Sled Group, 1st Reindeer Division and his mission is “to uti-lize all USMC resources to make certain that kids and families from 1 to 98 years old are remembered at Christmas. Priority one is the kids of Marines serving in harm’s way. The duties of Marines deployed at the hundreds of duty stations around the world separate them from their families by thousands of miles. Christmas Holidays are a difficult time for loved ones as well as the Marine far from home. We support the many Elves and Christmas Angels that help us each year to accept the chal-lenge of assisting those having trouble making their Christmas magic happen. We stand to protect the family values that make us the Marine Corps we are today”. He makes it his business to visit 2, 3, and 4 groups of veteran’s children every day from Thanksgiving until Christ-mas. It is no easy task getting to all these children. Sometimes Gunny Claus arrives in a Humvee, but he has also arrived in helicopters, an M1A1 Tank (http://goo.gl/9742N), and a V-22 Osprey. In 2010 he visited around 5000 children and this year the number has grown to nearly 7000! You don’t believe me? Visit http://gunnyclaus.org and take a look for yourself. There you learn more about Gunny Clause and see pictures of Gunny Claus with the children and you can

also learn how to make a donation to these kids. 100% of your donations go to the kids and families of US Marines. In the movie, when the mother, Doris, played by Maureen O’Hara, begged Kris Kringle to tell her daughter, Susan, that he was not really Santa Claus. He said, “…not only IS there such a person, but here I am to prove it.” In the end, Susan said, “I believe... I believe... It’s silly, but I believe.” In my life, I am proud to say that I have met Gunny Claus and he has caused me to say, “I believe”.

8th Annual Steele Angels Toy Run

By: Wendy Rogers This year made the 8th Annual Toy Run for the Steele Angels from Fayetteville, NC. If you don’t know about the Steele Angels, they are a group of women who ride as a group and do charity work for their community and surrounding areas. They have a traditional toy run that gathers at Legend’s Pub on Bragg Boulevard and is escorted to the Dog House. The entry fee is to bring an unwrapped toy for a child or make a dona-tion. When they got to the Dog House, they had food, music, door prizes, and a 50/50. There are other clubs and organizations that do these kinds of rides and collect toys for the needy, which is great, because there are a lot of children in this area that probably would not even get anything for Christmas if it wasn’t for these people to get together such events. As the saying goes, the more the merrier! And it does make a child’s Christmas “Merrier”. It’s hard to believe that there are children that don’t even get at least one toy for Christmas, and that just breaks my heart to think of that. I know the Steele Angels and all the other orga-nizations cannot take care of every child out there, but to know that we are helping some of them makes me feel good. There are a lot of events that go on in this town, from help-ing at Christmas time, helping sick people, help raise money to pay hospital bills, etc, and various other rides and functions. It just goes to show that bikers really know how to pull together and lend a helping hand when needed. It is so nice to know that all organizations can play so well together and make our community a better place! This event is always held the Saturday before Thanksgiving, so mark your calendar for next year and watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine for future events.

Wayne County Motorcycle Toy Run

By: DJ Dana AKA Gypsygirl What a HUGE turnout for the Wayne County Motorcycle Toy Run at the Berkeley Mall on November 20th here in Goldsboro, NC. Well over 300 motorcycles came to participate in this toy run today. It was a warm sunny day with tempera-tures in the 70’s and a beautiful southern breeze. It was such a pretty sight to see all the paint colors and shiny chrome all lined up and heading out of the mall parking lot. Boy, oh boy, what a sight and sound! The toy run had a police escort by the Goldsboro Police Dept and The Ghost Riders’ MC provided road guards to insure a safe ride for everyone. Santa was leading the way in his pretty red sleigh pulled by a bright and shiny motorcycle. There were no reindeer for this Santa! Santa and The parade of over 300 bikes rode down Berkley Boulevard, around town, and then to Country Time Tavern for food, fun and plenty of spirits as well as to drop off any toys that didn’t get collected at the mall. There were lots and lots of toys for all the girls and boys! Santa’s gonna deliver some great smiles come Christmas morning! Once again, Cassy Wood did a great job pulling the toy run together. All toys and donations will go to the domestic vio-lence shelters in Wayne and Johnston Counties as well as The Boys and Girls Club. There was plenty of food for everyone and it was goo o o d! Everyone had a safe ride, a grand time, and tons and tons of toys were collected for all the kids come Christmas morning. What a glorious day! Thank you to all who worked to make today possible as well as all of you who came out to spread some cheer this season!

Have a safe and Happy New Year!

End Of Summer Poker Run At Crazy Shots

By: Kathy Johnson Actually, there were three poker runs. One of them was in house and the other two were separate ride ins. It turned out to be a great benefit with unbelievable auction items! Sometimes you merely try and find something you like at a silent auction. This time it was narrowing it down to how much money you could afford to spend. The donors were generous and donated some great artwork, leather jackets, and autographed specialty items. Everything that you would like to see was here in one big ball of wax. There was also an early extra drawing when you bought an advance ticket for the event. Big prizes went out for that and made some people very happy. Well, with that, the 50/50, and the auction items, there was a lot going on. I can’t forget to mention that there was also a Spaghetti dinner with salad. When I looked back on that day, the only thing I regretted was not getting a CD from Don Cox. He was sooooo good and funny. Some times he would sing some off the wall songs with lyrics that I cannot print. Well, the next time I see him the first thing I will do is get a CD - BEFORE I get a beer. A lot of money was donated to the Fellowship Baptist Church and everyone had a great time. Some “thank you’s” must go out to John Anderson, Ray Price, Buster @ Public Hardware, Twin Specialties, Biker’s Boulevard, Bob Driver, Thunderbolt South, Ruthie, Lurch, Biker Barn, Widow Maker CDR, Bernard Warren, Milton & Julie, Don Cox, Captain Andy Woodall, Tattoo Asylum, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, Dragon Slayers MC, Cyclones MC, Sonny Barger, and Hells Angels.

9th Annual Arzie Rogers Memorial Toy RunBy: Charles Holcombe The 9th Annual Arzie Rogers Memorial Toy Run is sponsored by Pat Rogers Speedway Harley-Davidson, so I knew it was gonna be a great one. It’s a first time ride for me and some of my riding bud-dies, but we’re always eager to meet new people and make new friends. It was a bit cool out Sunday morn-ing, November 20th as we rode in to Kannapolis and I noticed two lines of bikes totaling about thirty parked on the right side of the road when we turned into the Fieldcrest Can-non Stadium. They were flagging us to go around and I was hoping that there were more bikes to come for the toy run. I was in awe as we reached the top of the entrance and saw hundreds of bikes and people already there! “Man!” I thought, “This is gonna be a big one!” We got lucky and parked right down front making it easy to maneuver the bike in and out several times to get a scope about the place and to take some cool pictures. While trying to find Dane Parrott, I was redi-rected to Frank Pope who was coordinating the ride at the sta-dium. He and all the staff was very helpful getting me the info I needed for the run. This one would be about an hour-long trip from the stadium through a part of Kannapolis and mostly Concord. It will wind up with a stroll down Bruton Smith Boulevard and end at Pat Rogers Speedway Harley-Davidson with no stops in between. It was obvious that this was toy ride. There were bikes of all kinds and styles with holiday décor adorning most of them and toys strapped to any part they would fit on. The only requirement for this ride is that you bring a new, unwrapped toy! Wow, that’s nothing considering what you get out of it! Among the toys and bikes were some interesting people to talk to including Santa Claus and Mad Max (thanks for putting air in my tire), representatives from at least three chapters of the CBA, and the Charlotte HOG Chapter who were slightly out-numbered by the Speedway Harley-Davidson HOG Chapter. There were lots of other riding clubs and an MC or two. I lost count! While there was a quilt raffle going on and even some line dancing, we were called to silence for the ride prayer, the national anthem, and an opening speech from Pat Rogers himself. He had a lot to say, all from the heart, and thanked all who rode out to support the ride, the staff, and the more than a dozen officers who would escort the ride all the way. We fired the bikes up and got underway for a great and mild afternoon

of riding. The last count I got was 418 bikes! Geeze, who can keep up with so many? Rumbling down Bruton Smith Boulevard was a seemingly endless sea of bikes arriving at the conclusion of the ride, Pat Rogers Speedway Harley-Davidson. The staff there was well prepared for the crowd and had a lot of great stuff to view. The big thanks goes to Pat Rogers, his staff and volunteers who makes this all possible by giving generously and unself-ishly to Cooperative Christian Ministries, benefiting the Empty Stocking Fund (704-786-4709) located at 246 Country Club Dr. in Concord, NC. Special thanks to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Department for the escort and R & R Bar-B-Que for the fantastic food! Thanks to Kelly Davenport who assisted me getting photos today, you can view them online at www.fullthrottlemagazine.com. Whether you are looking for some stuff to put on your ride, or a ride to put your stuff on, visit the generous folks at Pat Rogers Speedway Harley Davidson in Concord. You may also give them a call at 704-979-RIDE (7433), or the web: www.speedwayharley-davidson.com.

Ink Lab Tattoo 2nd Anniversary Party

By: Mark Infield November 20th marked the beginning of the 3rd year in busi-ness for Ink Lab Tattoo and they started it off with a bang! Friends and family gathered just to celebrate another year in business and enjoy each other’s company. Many attendees brought food and there were some really good dishes – chick-en wings, chili, pork ribs, and cold cuts, not to mention the chips, dips, and deserts. The Panther’s game was on TV, and I know of at least one person who got a new tattoo that day. It was laid back and pleasant, but if you have already been to Ink Lab Tattoo, you already knew that it was going to be that way. They also started off their 3rd year on the cover of The Caro-linas’ Full Throttle Magazine. If you haven’t been to Ink Lab Tattoo yet, you need to get on over there. They do custom work, cover-ups, black & grey and bright color tattoos and have over 25 years of combined experience. They can do anything that you can imagine and also offer body piercing and jewelry. They are located at 210 Century Boulevard, which is just off S. Main Street and Exit 14 of I-40 Business in Kernersville, NC. Check out some of their work on the web at: InkLabTattoo.com, Facebook and Myspace: www.myspace.com/lucas1778.

14th Annual Brenner Children’s Hospital Toy RunBy: WildThing Hospitals are not fun places to visit, especially children’s hospitals. It somehow doesn’t seem fair that kids are in the hospital during the Christ-mas season or during their birthday. I suppose that is why the Brenner Chil-dren’s Hospital annual toy run means so much to so many. Mark Wheelihan of Greensboro Harley-Davidson and Amy Jacobson, promotions and media director, start planning the event and contacting sponsors early in the fall. It all came together beautifully on Saturday, December 10th as the bikers started flowing onto Farragut Street and lining up in front of the dealer-ship as early as 10:30 am. The line kept getting longer and longer until it stretched almost to the cul-de-sac. It was a festival spirit with the big blow up Harley-Davidson arch lightly swaying in the breeze and the VIP canopies set up on the street. The registration table was set up in the parking lot for people to sign up and purchase event t-shirts. The toy trailer had its doors wide open for folks to place their dona-tions inside. The Painted Plate had a nice brunch set up in the Motorcycle Park with chicken salad sandwiches, cookies, chips, iced tea and coffee. Their food is always great! Inside the dealership was ablaze with decorations, full of shoppers making last minute selections and some folks were helping carry gifts from under the Christmas tree outside to the trailer. At 1pm everyone started moving toward their bikes and started getting suited up. With the Greensboro Police Depart-ment and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department in the lead followed by Mark and Tara Wheelihan on their bikes, we were off – all 300 + of us. The ride headed out I-40 with the Greensboro Police Depart-ment and the Guilford County Sheriff’s Department assisted by Forsyth County Sheriff’s Department, we all made it safely to Brenner Children’s Hospital in Winston-Salem. After every-one got parked and made their way to the entrance, the hospi-tal staff pulled two huge laundry carts out to the toy trailer and everyone pitched in and helped fill them up and the overflow toys and games were carried inside to the room set aside for sorting them. There was a table with cookies and hot chocolate in the lobby for the riders. With Amy’s assistance, Mark gathered everyone in the lobby to make the presentation to Beth Smith, Child Life Admin-istrator of Brenner and to thank everyone. Beth graciously thanked us and said that it just wasn’t Christmas until the motorcycles came! She explained that the toys and games donated were given to the children in the hospital Christmas

morning and also used all through the year, if a child happened to be a patient on their birthday. Mark presented her with an envelope of monetary donations totaling $12,150 from Triad H.O.G. Club, Advanced Technology, Signature Properties, Genuity Concepts, Chase-Logeman Corp., Olympic Products, LLC, The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine, R & R Auto Care, Jarrett Sheet Metal, The Decal Source, Barber Construc-tion, Law Office of Gary Poole, Buffalo Soldiers M/C, Schiff-man’s Jewelry, Triad Property Services, and Freedom Biker Church. He then stated that since this was the fourteenth year he would add to the total to bring it up to $14,000. The money would be used to purchase more toys as needed throughout the year. Mark also thanked the Painted Plate, Franklin Print-ing for the flyers and posters, and Red T-shirts for the event T-shirts. It was a really good day, a good ride, and, by the way, a big thank you to the LE departments for their excellent job of es-corting and traffic control that made the large group ride a safe one. OK, now it’s Christmas!

ALR VA Hospital Ride

By Caroline For most bikers, the latter part of the year is a whirlwind of toy runs, polar runs, and all sorts of fundraisers and benefit rides. For those who live in the colder climates, it’s always a gamble on what the weather will be like. Will it be cold (er), sunny, rainy, and how many layers do I put on? For me, the season is not complete until the ride to the VA Hospital takes place in December. Although, I take part in an appropriate amount of toy gathering, because with so many families barely getting by, this is important. However, I feel that one must not forget the veterans and make sure that they have a Merry Christmas, too. The VA Hospital ride to Salisbury, NC, is a fund raising event that goes on all year long. The American Legion Riders of Post 55 in Winston-Salem start their planning early. So if you see where they are holding a bike show, or bike night, or anything else in the Cruisin’ Calendar, you can bet that it is an effort to raise as much as they can so the veterans can have a Merry Christmas, too. This year, we left the Legion Post on

Saturday, December 10 with temps in the 40’s, and I have to say, it was a lot warmer than previous years. We were sched-uled to arrive at the Salisbury National Cemetery in time to take part in the Wreaths Across America ceremony. That is an event that happens simultaneously across the United States where a ceremony takes place before placing wreaths on the graves of veterans. Afterwards, it was on to the hospital to visit with the veter-ans there. We visited with the long term and geriatric care as well as those who were able to come and play bingo. We gave out Christmas cards and bags of quarters (for the vending ma-chines) since change is a large request from the patients when asked what they need. After the hospital visitation we all gathered at the VFW Post across the street for drawing of door prizes and an auction. The bidding was lively and there were a variety of interesting items - something for everyone. When it was all over, ALR Director, Tony Hendricks presented Nancy Brown-Perry a check for $3,500. The ALR from Post 55 did an outstanding job to make this a great Christmas for some deserving veter-ans.

Wreaths Across America Wreath Laying Ceremony

By: Chubs, Crossed Rifles MC The Wreath Laying Ceremony on Saturday, December 10th was a great success. Motorcycle riders from Winston-Salem, NC to Rock Hill, SC met at the rest stop on I-85 between Exit 58 and 60, and pulled out at 10:00 headed for Salisbury VFW Post 3006. They rode their bikes in a procession from the Salisbury VFW Post to the Salisbury NC National Cemetery Annex. The Patriot Guard Riders were hosts of the ceremony while the Crossed Rifles MC raised the vast majority of the money through out the year to purchase over 1,000 wreaths to put out on the final resting place of those who have served our America. The Mayor of Salisbury, Paul B. Woodson, was in attendance and gave a brief but poignant speech. If you would like to learn more about this organization or make a donation toward the 2012 Wreaths across America, you can visit: www.wreathsacrossamerica.org

Spokes & Jokes 25

The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine staff screens hundreds of jokes each month. We make no claim to being politically correct. Most PC jokes just aren’t funny. If you are offended by any of the jokes on this page, take heart in the fact that we go to great lengths to offend everyone equally. This is not a hate crime! At our house we call it “pickin” and it is symbolic of your acceptance in the group. We live in the United

States Of The Offended, so get over it!!

New Years Resolutions You Can Keep. Are you sick of making the same resolu-tions year after year that you never keep? Why not promise to do something you can actually accomplish? Here are some reso-lutions that you can use as a starting point: Gain weight, at least 30 pounds. Stop ex-ercising, waste of time. Read less, makes you think. Watch more TV, I’ve been missing some good stuff. Spend more time at work, surfing the internet. Stop bringing lunch from home: I should eat out more. Get in a whole NEW rut! Personal goal: bring back disco. Buy an ‘83 Eldorado and invest in a really loud stereo system. Speak in a monotone voice and only use monosyllabic words. Only wear jeans that are 2 sizes too small and use a chain or rope for a belt. Get further in debt. Get wired with high-speed net connections at home. Associate with even worse business clients. Spread out priorities beyond my ability to keep track of them. Wait around for opportunity. Focus on the faults of others. Mope about my faults. Never make New Year’s resolutions again.

A doctor examining a woman who had been rushed to the Emergency Room, took the husband aside, and said, “I don’t like the looks of your wife at all.” “Me neither doc,” said the husband. “But she’s a great cook and really good with the kids.”

A lovely blonde was flying in a two-seater airplane with just the pilot. He has a heart attack and dies. She frantically calls a May Day: “May Day! May Day! Help me! Help me! My pilot had a heart attack and is dead. I don’t know how to fly. Help me! Please help me!” All of a sudden she hears a voice over the radio saying: “This is the tower. I have received your message and I will talk you through it. I’ve had a lot of experience with this kind of problem. Now, just relax. Everything will be fine! Now give me your height and position.” She says, “I’m 5’4” and I’m in the front seat.” “O.K.” says the voice from the tower. “Repeat after me: Our Father . . . Who art in Heaven. . .”

Here’s another way to look at the Debt Ceiling: Let’s say, You come home from work and find there has been a sewer backup in your neighborhood and your home has sewage all the way up to your ceilings. What do you think you should do?Raise the ceilings, or pump out the $hi!? Your choice is coming Nov. 2012

After getting all of Pope Benedict’s lug-gage loaded into the limo, (and he doesn’t travel light), the driver notices the Pope is still standing on the curb. “Excuse me, Your Holiness,’ says the driver, “Would you please take your seat so we can leave?” “Well, to tell you the truth,’ says the Pope, “they never let me drive at the Vatican. When I was a cardinal I drove a car, and I’d really like to drive today.” “I’m sorry, Your Holiness, but I cannot let you do that. I’d lose my job! What if something should happen?” protests the driver, wish-ing he’d never gone to work that morn-ing. “Who’s going to tell?” says the Pope with a smile. Reluctantly, the driver gets in the back as the Pope climbs in behind the wheel. The driver quickly regrets his decision when, after exiting the airport, the Pontiff floors it, accelerating the limo to 205 kph. (Remember, the Pope is German.) “Please slow down, Your Holiness!” pleads the worried driver, but the Pope keeps the pedal to the metal until they hear sirens. “Oh, dear God, I’m going to lose my license -- and my job!” moans the driver. The Pope pulls over and rolls down the window as the cop approaches, but the cop takes one look at him, goes back to his mo-torcycle, and gets on the radio. “I need to talk to the Chief,” he says to the dispatcher. The Chief gets on the radio and the cop tells him that he’s stopped a limo going 205 kph. “So bust him,’ says the Chief. “I don’t think we want to do that, he’s really important,” said the cop. The Chief exclaimed, “All the more reason!” “No, I mean really important,” said the cop with a bit of persistence. The Chief then asked, “Who do you have there, the mayor?” Cop: “Bigger.” Chief: “A senator?” Cop: “Big-ger.” Chief: “The Prime Minister?” Cop: “Bigger.” “Well,” said the chief, “who is it?” Cop: “I think it’s God!” The Chief is even more puzzled and curious, “What

makes you think it’s GOD?”Cop: “His chauffeur is the Pope!”

Following my excesses at Christmas I de-cide to calculate my Body Mass Index us-ing my weight and height. Fortunately for me I am not in the obese range, but I am technically overweight. I have resolved to get myself back to a healthy BMI this year. All I have to do is grow 18 inches.

Sorry for not calling you on New Year’s, I just got out of jail. I got locked up for punching the f*@k out of this idiot at a party. In my defense, when you hear an Arab counting down from 10, your instincts kick in.

This is a word to the wise for all my friends. I would like to share an experi-ence with you, it has to do with drinking and driving. As you know some of us have had brushes with the authorities over the years. The other night I was out for dinner with a few friends. After drinking too much, and knowing full well that I was wasted, I did something I’ve never done before. Believe it or not, I took a bus home. Yes, a bus. I arrived home safely and without incident. This was really a surprise to me since I have never driven a bus before.

Students in an advanced Biology class were taking their mid-term test. The last question was, ‘’Name seven advantages of Mother’s Milk,’’ worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. He wrote: 1.) It’s the perfect formula for the child. 2.) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3.) It’s always the right temperature. 4.) It’s inexpensive. 5.) It bonds the child to mother, and vice versa. 6.) It’s always available as needed. And then, the student was stuck - he could not think of the 7th advantage. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indi-cating the end of the test, he wrote...7.) 5th Annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Poker Run

By: Rose and Lloyd This is the time of year when so many people are struggling just to exist that they are unable to have Christmas for their children. There are people that realize this and open their hearts to give as much as they can. On December 3rd, JR’s Corner Tavern at 901 Greensboro Road in High Point hosted the 5th Annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Poker Run (http://ToysForTots.org). The cost to ride was to donate a toy or pay $15 to participate. For weeks before Christmas there are boxes set up at many locations for people to donate toys. When all toys are collected, the Marines take these toys to families that have let them know that there was in need in their family. The poker run left JR’s Corner Tavern at 12:30, after a very inspiring prayer offered by Oldog. The first stop was at American Legion Post 87. Then after short break the ride proceeded to Long Shot Sports Bar on Prospect St. There were refreshments and a buffet of chili, chips and other snacks for the riders. The ride left there and went to Hooters in Greensboro. At each stop there was lots of fun and the Christmas spirit warmed the hearts of everyone. The Marines present were all smiles anticipating what a wonderful Christ-mas they would be able to provide for many children as a result of the generosity of the many bikers involved. Back at JR’s Corner Tavern, Crazy Dave cooked the best chicken and an array of great food. There was a 50/50, a raffle, and an auction, while The Cory Hunt Band entertained everyone. Approximately 51 bikes and their riders participated raising over $2900 and 11 boxes of toys. This event would not have been such a success with out the help of many. A special thanks goes out to The Marine Riders, The United Riders Riding Club, Amish Trading Post, I.H. Caffey, R.H. Barringer, Gametime, American Legion Post 87, Hoot-ers of Greensboro, and, of course, all the people that participated. The customer at Hooters that gave a $500 donation also deserves a special thank you. This is an annual event thanks to Oldog and Mama Kris, so mark your calendar for the second Saturday in December next year and be a part of this great cause to help out the kids in our community. Remember a little goes a long way.

I Ride Full Throttle 29

We Ride Full ThrottleBy: Andy Anders Wednesday nights is boy’s night out for a group of us in Goldsboro, NC that get together and ride to various restaurants to indulge in fine dining ranging from hot dogs to steaks. Since our night out is in the middle of the week, some of us have to work the next day so we only ride 30 to 60 miles. This puts us get-ting home at a decent hour in order to ensure a good night’s sleep. We baby boomers can’t run with the big dogs all night like we used to. Because of conflicting work schedules and unex-pected occurrences at home our group could be as little as two or as many as eight. To date our most memorable ride occurred when the weather forecast was far from ideal. It was in the middle of July. It was very cloudy and the forecast called for scattered showers, which, as everybody who knows summers in the South, meant it could rain where you are but not across the street. So, being the true bikers we are, we weren’t going to let a chance of a little shower keep us from our boy’s night out. Besides, this was our only night to get away from our bet-ter half to enjoy the camaraderie of fellow male bikers and let what little hair we have left down. So off the five of us went. Mike, who works in a sporting goods stores sells guns and hunting equipment and is the clown of the bunch. He owns a Big Bear Chopper that took him two years to build, (everyone was beginning to think this was a ghost bike and it would never see completion), but de-cided he would ride his Kawasaki this particular night. I don’t think he wanted the chopper to get wet if it rained. Butch, a retired North Carolina highway patrolman, rode his Sportster. Johnnie, a pawn shop broker rode his Road King. Gil, retired from the Navy, rode his Road Glide and last but not least, I am a detention officer and the better looking of the bunch rode my Wide Glide. We were about five miles into our 30-mile journey when it started to sprinkle. With every revolution of the bike’s front wheel the weather got worse. The sprinkles turned to rain, the rain turned into a downpour, and the downpour became a deluge. By the time we were three-fourths of the way there it started lightning on both sides of the road. Most of us were glad Gil was on his Road Glide with two antennas sticking out the back - not that we wished him any bad luck but we felt a sense of security for ourselves with him having two lightning rods on the back of his bike. Unable to see the bike in front of us and soaking wet down to our underwear, we continued on to the restaurant. As we dismounted the bikes, I grabbed a dry T-shirt out of my saddlebag. I keep one there just for Kodak moments like these. We were all dumbfounded as we got to the door only to discover the restaurant was closed. The storm had knocked out the power so they couldn’t cook any more food. We must have looked like five soaking wet lost puppies and I think they felt

sorry for us and let us in. The people inside said the only food left was on the buffet bar and when that’s gone there wouldn’t be anymore. So while I changed my shirt in the completely dark rest room, the others hit the buffet bar. After I got myself some-thing to eat I joined the others at the table to enjoy a meal in the dark with wet dripping clothes from the waist down. About 10 to 15 minutes before we were ready to leave the power came back on, so we finished our meal and joked with some nearby customers. We paid our bills and got ready to leave, but this time we were smart and thought ahead and put our rain gear on. Hey, I didn’t want to get my dry T-shirt wet going home. We were about two miles down the road and here came the rain, wind, and lightning again. Boy, was I glad I had my rain gear on. I was going to arrive home at least half dry. The rain and lightning continued until we all got home. Since Mike’s house was closest on the way home, he was the first to leave the group while the rest continued on. Mike gave us time to get home, then he started calling everyone one by one to make sure we all made it home safely. Treasured memories are usually made when nothing goes wrong and taken under picture perfect conditions. But some-times life throws you a curve and you need to make the best of it. This ride was one when all the conditions went wrong, but it made a lasting impression the five of us will talk about for a long time. As long as you have good food, five great friends on Harleys and maybe one Kawasaki, how could you go wrong? Pictured here from left to right is Mike Hyland, Butch Dil-lard, Johnnie Bryant and me. Gil Warren should be pictured with his blue Road Glide, but Gil lost his battle with cancer before we could all manage our schedules enough to get to-gether for the photo shoot. But he is with us in spirit on every ride because I was given his Chaps and leather jacket.

IN “HIS” WINDPreacher Steve

Here we are starting a new one, hard to believe its 2012! Wonder what this year will bring? For some great joy; for some great sorrow; for some new opportunities, for others, just the same old thing; and for many the year will start with great plans but end with the same excuses! We’ve got all the weight loss equipment, just haven’t lost the weight “yet.” We’ve got all the old friends phone numbers, just haven’t called them “yet.” We’ve got all the credit cards together, just haven’t cut them up “yet.” We’ve got a Bible, just haven’t opened it “yet.” We’ve got the Bikers Prayer on this page, just haven’t Prayed it “yet.” Sometimes the New Year is just a continuation of the old one and sometimes plans are just that, plans! Changing the date on a calendar means nothing unless we have actually made some changes in our life. Going from 2011 to 2012 is nothing more than another year flying by unless we make an effort to complete the plans we have made and can see the difference in our lives. “Not Yet-ittis” is a very serious disease that can cause severe depression from being overweight; severe guilt from not mak-ing the phone calls; severe debt from not cutting up the credit cards; severe hopelessness from not reading the Word of God; and most severe of all, even eternal death from not Praying the Bikers Prayer on this page!

On December 1, 1958 a fire broke out at the foot of a stair-way in the Our Lady of the Angels School in Chicago. The fire quickly raged out of control; it cut off any normal escape routes. Ninety grade school children died in that fire. A little boy was in a second story window--the newspapers had a photo of him. The boy’s father was down below, yelling to him to jump into his arms. The boy could see the fire racing toward him from behind, but he refused to jump. Then, in one awful moment, the boy disappeared. He was one of the victims! He didn’t have to die. If only he had jumped into the arms that were waiting to save him. Tragically, so many people have made that same awful mistake when it comes to Jesus Christ! What about YOU. Pray the Bikers Prayer on this page and mean it in your Heart as you speak it out and defeat “Not Yet-ittis” and begin seeing the difference in your life. Happy New Year, Happy New You!

20th Annual Durham HOG® Salvation Army

Toy Run

By: Geoff Greene, Secretary, Durham HOG This year the Durham Harley Owners Group celebrated their 20th Annual Salvation Army Toy Run on November 20th. Nearly 100 motorcycle riders gathered at Shelton’s Harley-Davidson in Durham for this police-escorted ride through the City of Durham to the Salvation Army barracks on Liberty Street. Bikes were decorated for the season with the glim-mering red, white, silver and gold, complementing the bikes’ chrome and custom paint. Even Santa Claus was present on the lead bike. The weather was perfect and the procession was impressive as it rumbled through the city with a special deliv-ery - a shiny red truck full of toys for the Salvation Army. Toys donated by all who participated will make this Christ-mas special for the children who might otherwise go without. In addition, the Durham H.O.G.® Chapter once again donated over $2000 to help feed people in need. Major Smith and Lt. Bruce Rabon of the Salvation Army of Durham, Orange, and Person Counties accepted the donations from the Durham Har-ley Owners Group Director, Stan Parker, and Chapter sponsor, Shelton Davis. Durham H.O.G.® is a local chapter of the Harley Owners Group. The Chapter is comprised of about 80 local Harley-Davidson motorcycle enthusiasts who, in addition to riding for fun, donate their time and efforts to support local and national charities with funds raised during their Annual Bike Show and other events throughout the year. If you see us around town during the next few months, stop and say hello. For more information on the Chapter, please call 919-596-9511 or email us at [email protected].

24th Annual Roger Hendrix Memorial Toy Run

By: Peggy Hendrix Irwin and Susan Sykes Once again we had a great 2-day event November 19th & 20th. The Saturday Pig Pickin’ was spectacular. Rick Bentley and Stan Houfek were up and cooking the pig at 5am. Once the pig was on the cooker, they began preparing the 100 lbs of collards. Along with all the fixins, Loretta brought in 3 pans of banana pudding and the Ladies Auxiliary brought other great desserts. The Beat Transformers’ Dane Britt and Charles Seaton provided music. They provided both old biker style music along with some of the new tunes for the younger generation. We wrapped up the day with a raffle, auction and 50/50. We also received toys and cash for the kids. Sunday was another beautiful day. Everyone was standing on Flatline’s parking lot chatting about old times when Santa and Mrs. Clause with a couple of their elves rode up. We must have all been good this past year for Santa to make this stop. Once the County Sherriff’s Department arrived to escort us to Hampstead, we loaded our ve-hicles with toys and jumped on our motorcycles to make our delivery to the American Legion Post 167, just as we had for the last 24 years. As always, we were greeted by the all the fine members of the American Legion and the Ladies of the Auxiliary made sure we all got plenty to eat. Every year we have had the support of several sponsors who have helped to keep this event going. Thanks to Flatline Customs, Wolf Track T-Shirts, Lloyd’s of Landscaping, SOD Surfboards, PT’s Olde Fashioned Grill, True Clean, Kefi, Billy Goats, Britt Mo-torsports, Al Sidbury Construction, BSA Troop 218, and a couple of new ones this year, Behind Bars Lifestyle Apparel, Canady Sons and S.C.R.E.A.M. INC! Also, thanks to Wild Child Custom Grafix who provides us with our banners, Smithfield for the hush puppies, the staff and kids at UNCW for the toys and last but not least, thanks to the toy run committee for all that you do Jeff Hughes, Susan Sykes, Rick Bentley and Stan Houfek. The biggest thanks goes to all of you who take the time to buy a gift, spend a couple of dollars on a raffle ticket or 50/50 so a child can have a gift at Christmas. Next year be sure to come out and help us celebrate the 25th year of the Roger Hendrix Memorial Toy Run. I know he will be there.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Tribute Bike In Memory Of RVZ

By: RavenArtimus Pyle: Drummer for Lynyrd Skynyrd ~ Rock & Roll Hall of Fame 2006: “This bike is a tribute to my dear friend Ronnie Van Zant that I sadly miss. He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. R.I.P. RVZ. Thank You, Willie, for the bike to ride and share with the world.”

Every nut, bolt, screw, washer, etc., was chromed at Gowanda Harley-Davidson. When I asked Daryl about what it meant to him when the bike was finished he said, “I was proud as hell. It made me feel like a new papa. I knew where it was going, who it was going to, and that just made it a kick-ass experience.” Artimus Pyle to The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine: “Thank you so much for helping me keep Ronnie’s memory alive by sharing this tribute bike with the Carolinas’ readers. Salisbury HOG Annual Chili Cook Off

By: Grant The Salisbury Harley Owners Group Annual Chili Cook Off at Tilley Harley-Davidson of Salisbury was held on November 19th. If you wanted to try Alligator chili or Texas chili soup or just plain Grade A Carolina chili, it was available. It was a good turn out for chili heads all at one location. Everyone was taking part in the tasting and went from there to just plain eat-ing gallons of chili that was served. Several teams dressed up to fit the part from gator hunters, to country bumpkins, to top chefs. There were even celeb-rity professional judges, which included the Rowan County Sheriff, Kevin L. Auten, Jay Baker, Battalion Chief from the Salisbury Fire Department, and Mark Wineka a reporter from the Salisbury Post. They had to eat a lot to make the call of who was top dog. Keith and Vicky Carter won first place with their take on a favorite recipe followed by Randy and Karen Boger with some gator based chili, followed by people’s choice by Grant and Leah Eagle (Yes, that’s me!). The Ladies of Harley also had a desert cook off at the event and Debbie Mason took home top honors with her Red Velvet Cake Balls. This is an annual thing so if you have a cast iron stomach come out for the fun next year and have a bowl or 12. Check out some fun pictures at face book, Salisbury HOG and check out all the up coming activities at SalisburyHOG.com.Pictures are also available at FullThrottleMagazine.com > Pictures.

39th Anniversary Of Tilley Harley-Davidson

By: Vickie Kress The Saturday before Thanksgiving a bunch of folks gath-ered at Tilley Harley-Davidson in Statesville, NC, to celebrate Don and Robinette Tilley’s 39th anniversary of the dealership. Pictured above are their children and grandchildren: Derek Tilley, Chance Levan, Chase Levan, Terry Levan, Kyle Pierce, Donna Piece, and Courtney Pierce on the motorcycle. Robi-nette, (center) presents a check to Sammie Barclay, Develop-ment Associate for the Victory Junction Gang Camp. Martha Mitchell, Statesville HOG Chapter Director (far right) presents a check to Barbara Hawk, Fundraising Coordinator for the Muscular Dystrophy Association. These are two of the chari-ties helped by benefit rides sponsored by the Tilleys. On June 11 and October 22 benefit rides were held for two special organizations, The Muscular Dystrophy Association and The Victory Junction Gang Camps. During the years, the Statesville HOG (Harley Owner Group) Chapter has raised thousands of dollars to help make dreams come true to send children to these wonderful camps. The Statesville HOG Chapter volunteers are such hard workers and very giving of their time to make every event a success. A large crowd turned out to wish the Tilleys the very best and many more years of service to our community. Don and Robinette would like to thank their customers and employees for making this happen. Please join us in wishing them many more years of success.

Thumper’s CMOU Holiday Charity Run

For Turning Point

RIP Thumper 11/24/55 - 3/26/11 GBNF Charitable bikers joined up with their Carolina Motorcycle Organizations United (CMOU) friends and Harley Santa’s helpers for Thumper’s Turning Point Run. Approximately 70 bikes and 200+ people gathered on December 10th at Iron Horse Motorcycles, 1600 West Roosevelt Boulevard in Mon-roe, NC at 12 noon. Before the ride, John Baucom, the CMOU Spokesman talked about what a great organization Turning Point is and how Thumper, a leader in the biker community, and an integral part of the leadership at CMOU will be missed. Then, Thumper’s brother, Willow, talked about this annual charity event that Thumper started several years ago and how CMOU voted to name this run after him in his honor. He said it was great to see people carrying on this tradition in Thumper’s memory, and that he looked forward to and loved bringing joy to the women and children of the local battered women’s shelter each and every year. Then Dano, NC State Rep for Heaven’s Saints MM closed in prayer, thanking God for the beautiful weather, traveling safety, and for Thumper’s vision for this event. The group departed for short ride at 1pm for their final desti-nation at Life Church, 1721 North Charlotte Ave. Monroe, NC. The weather was great, and even so, cages were welcomed! Many helped CMOU support this wonderful organization that assists women and children who have escaped from vio-lence. Several brought gifts for boys and girls and their moth-ers. $600 was raised at Iron Horse on the 10th and CMOU also presented a check for $2,500 bring the Grand total to $3,100 + gifts. CMOU is a non-profit 501(c)(3) foundation and you can learn more about them at: http://www.CMOUonline.com . Visit: http://www.UnionCountyTurningPoint.org to learn more about Turning Point.

Ray Price Racing Reaches Finals At Manufactures Cup Race

Top Fuel Harleys Challenge Supercharged Metric Bikes In Fall Manufacturers Cup Race

On November 11th-13th, for Ray Price Racing’s final race of the 2011 season the team headed to South Georgia Motor-sport Park in Valdosta, GA for The Fall Manufacturers Cup Race. The three-day event provides the opportunity for two different classes of Top Fuel Nitro drag bikes to compete; the supercharged inline metric bikes piloted by the likes of Larry “Spiderman” McBride and the V-Twin Harley-Davidson Nitro burning monsters campaigned by the legendary Ray Price Racing Team. Normally the four cylinder metric bikes and the two cylinder Harley-Davidson bikes do not compete against one another in the top fuel class due to the metric bikes being supercharged and the V-Twins being naturally aspirated. Tommy Grimes twisted the throttle on the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike in the first round of qualifying on Friday to post a 6.443 ET at 222.58 mph. In the second round on Saturday Grimes ran a 6.367 ET at 221.31 mph to secure a spot in the eight bike elimination field. Going into Sunday’s eliminations the Ray Price Race team was one of seven V-Twin Harley-Davidson Top Fuel teams competing against the single supercharged metric bike of McBride. All eight bikes competed in the Top Fuel class for a chance to stand in the winner’s circle. In the first round Grimes brought the 1,000 horsepower Top Fuel Nitro Harley drag bike to the line and went on to win with a 6.493 ET at 210.83 mph to move the team into the semi final round. In the semi’s Grimes ran a 6.220 ET at 233.76 mph to move the team into the finals where they would face the lone super-charged metric bike piloted by McBride. “During The Spring Manufactures Cup here we made it to the semi’s running a real close race against McBride. The uniqueness of this race makes it exciting to compete against the supercharged bikes”, remarked Price. The Manufacturers Spring Cup is the one race where both the supercharged metric bikes and the thunderous V-Twin Harley’s can compete side-by-side while putting on an awesome show of power for the fans. Grimes made it a very close race even though the super-charged bike ridden by McBride had a performance advantage over the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored V-Twin Harley. McBride got the win running a 6.009 ET at 222.14 mph but not before Grimes ran an equally impressive 6.333 ET at 219.83 mph to the runner up spot. This was the final race of the 2011 season for the Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Akea sponsored drag bike. The team had a very successful season competing at three NHRA races, eleven AHDRA races, two Manufacturers Cup races and Cyclepaloo-za. The team captured a total of two wins at the NHRA races;

came in second place as part of the 2011 AHDRA Screamin Eagle Championship points series and went to the winners circle to kick off the 2011 race season at the Cyclepalooza exhibition drag race. The Ray Price Motorsports team sends sincere thanks to all their sponsors for their support for the 2011 race season. They include our Primary Sponsors: Akea, Ray Price Harley-Da-vidson, with special thanks to our Associate Sponsor Raleigh H.O.G. and our Support Sponsors: Nationwide Insurance, CP Pistons, Royal Purple, Barnett Clutches & Cables, Autolite Sparkplugs, Mickey Thompson Tires, Gates Belts, Brown and Miller Racing Solutions, JIMS USA, Industrial Machine Solutions, and Wiley X. Additional thanks: Bill Hayes, Hargis Consulting, Ultra Pro Machining and Freddie Robbins. Ray Price Harley-Davidson is located at 1126 South Saun-ders Street in Raleigh, NC. If you are into drag racing, you should make it a point to visit the dealership and take in the Drag Racing Museum upstairs. It’s worth the trip. www.Ray-Price.com www.LiveToRideLonger.com

His Laboring Few Toy Run

By: WildThing The first Saturday in December has been the day for me to ride to Preacher Steve’s on Old Hwy 29 in Thomasville to meet up with others that attend this toy run for several years. This year, we were blessed with balmy weather and everyone was happy as they joked and reminisced about riding in the snow last year. When Mark and I arrived there were already several bikes parked in the grass and a line at the registration table and the riders just kept coming. There were folks from Freedom Biker Church, Christian Motorcyclists Association, Christian Riders Ministries, HLF members, some local mo-torcycle clubs and a host of individuals interested in helping families at Christmas. At 1pm, upwards of sixty bikes came to life to escort the toy wagon out through the country and ending up at His Laboring Few Ministry’s fellowship hall on Martin Luther King Drive in Thomasville. While the gifts were placed around the Christ-mas tree, riders helped themselves to a buffet of soup, chili, sandwiches, and desserts. Everyone enjoyed the food and fel-lowship as a band played some Christian rock tunes. Preacher Steve soon got everyone’s attention and thanked them for participating in the toy run and remarked what a great ride it was. But that helping children was even greater. He led us in prayer for those children and parents who were hurting at this special time of year and asked God to bless the gifts for these folk so as to lift their spirits and that they would come to know Jesus. Then there were door prizes to give out and the band played some more as the riders trickled out and headed home trusting that they had helped someone in need this holi-day season.

2011 Davis H-D & Burlington HOG Toy Run

By: Scott Wicker Unusually warm temperatures contributed to a great turn out as Davis Harley-David-son and the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter hosted its annual Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Run. Over 100 riders participated in the 2011 event and due to the support from bikers in the Burlington, Graham, and Alamance County area, over $800 and a pick up truck full of toys of were collected. All the participants that registered received special commemorative pins for the ride. The North Carolina State Highway Patrol escorted the ride and provided safety the entire route that started and ended at Davis Harley-Davidson. After returning to Davis’, we were served lots of hot food that really hit the spot making this a fun day and a good time spent with good friends and fellow riders. Also after the ride at Davis’, there was time for the kids and grown ups to meet with Santa and Mrs. Claus and get their pictures taken with them. We would like to thank the North Carolina State Highway Pa-trol for the safety they provided during the ride. We can never thank the members of the Burlington H.O.G. Chapter and the fine folks at Davis Harley-Davidson enough for their hospitality and hosting such a great event. And as always, thanks to every-one who participated and supported Toys For Tots. We can’t Thank You enough! Ride Safe in 2012!

Carolina Billiards 16th Annual Toy RunBy: Whistle A big thanks for all of those who at-tended on December 4th and made the Carolina Billiards 16th Annual Toy Run such a huge success. The pig was on early and smelling real good by the time I got there at 11 am. They came up the street. They came down the street. The parking lots were full, the side streets were lined up, and a good guess would be at least 300 people inside keeping Danielle and Katie busy. They came from Raleigh, Greenville, Washington, Rocky Mount, Snow Hill, and Wilson and made a good showing. What a turn out to make a bunch of kids happy this Christmas, and, yes, we still put Christ in Christmas. The weather was great and the ride was good, at least until Horace showed up with his new Boss Hoss Trike and made me jealous, (awesome ride Horace!). The pig was better than it smelled. Next came the door prizes. It must not have been my day. Let’s just say I went home tail tucked and empty handed. It was still a great day. I got to drop a bomb on Bill, and I hope he enjoys it. I just wanted to give a little back to a guy that gives so much. The t-shirts were a sell out, but Bill will be making another order, so if you didn’t get one, you can call and order one. Let’s keep it in mind to attend Carolina Billiards 17th Annual Toy Run next year. It’s always on the 1st Sunday of December. Watch The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar for the date. It’s always on the 1st Sunday of December. If you would like to receive weekly event reminders from The Carolinas’ Full Throttle Magazine go to www.FullThrottleMagazine.com and click on the icon on the home page to subscribe. It’s FREE! Thanks for all the support and I hope to see you all next year. If you are out and riding, swing on by Carolina Billiards at 3505 Airport Blvd NW in Wilson, NC or call (252) 243-5316 and give Bill a holla. Be sure to tell him that you saw his run in The Caro-linas’ Full Throttle Magazine and tell him he needs to advertise in the magazine so everyone can find Carolina Billiards.

Randolph County CBA 25th Annual Mills Home Toy Run

By: DPapaBear Nifong The first Sunday in December each year is when the Ran-dolph County CBA group puts on their Toy Run for the Bap-tist Mills Home in Thomasville. This year marked 25 years of providing toys for the residents of the Mills Home. The weather was perfect for riding and we were looking to break the old record of 1600+ bikes and make this the best year ever. Well, it happened! 2600+ BIKES! A special THANKS to all who took part. Can you image 2600+ thundering bikes rolling through Thomasville? The procession stretched out for several miles. The ride started at the Dillard’s parking lot on hwy 64 in Asheboro, with registration starting around 10am with ride leaving around 1:30pm. The ride was escorted from Asheboro to Hwy 109 in Thomasville by the Randolph Co Sheriff’s De-partment with the Asheboro Police Department helping block intersections. At Hwy 109 the Davidson County Sheriff’s Department picked up the escort to the Mills Home with the help of the Thomasville Police Department, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad helping to block intersections. A special THANKS to all the helping agencies to make this a safe ride! The procession of bikes is greeted all along the route from Asheboro to Thomasville by hundreds of cheering supporters. They line up along the route every year with signs, waving flags, and cheering as the bikers roll through. This has gotten to be one of the largest rides, if not the largest ride in the area or maybe even the state. Bikers come from all over for the event each year regardless of the weather. I saw a license tag from Florida and talked with a couple from Maryland. We have a group from the mountains that come every year with donations from their community and last year it was cold here and snow there when they left that morning. It just shows you the commitment these bikers have made to help others!

This event was started back in 1986 when the CBA members approached the Mills Home Staff with the idea to help provide Christmas for the residents. I think the idea of having a group of bikers on the campus was met with mixed emo-tions at first, but has steady grown thru the years and is now waited on with great anticipation each year! Cox’s Harley-Davidson also joined the CBA group as a sponsor and supporter of the ride. The Mills Home provides care and transitional services for children in over 30 counties as well as care for single mothers and their children and foster care. There are currently 47 children living on campus. The children prepare a wish list and the organizers of the event make sure they all get something on the list as well as other gifts. Blake Ragsdale, BCH director of communica-tions, said it’s just tremendous to see the expres-sions on the faces of the children. You can hear

the bikes well before you see them, Ragsdale said. Buddy Grainger of the Randolph CBA Chapter, who helped organize the event, calls it a ”labor of love”. Riders in the ride often take part in other similar events but refer to the Mills Home Toy Run as a favorite because they get to interact with the children and see them open their gifts. Buddy has told of a 9-year-old girl from the home, during one of his first rides, coming up to me after opening her gifts and said, “I Love You”. Buddy said, “Moments like that have made these past 25 years worthwhile.” Once all the bikers pull in and park their motorcycles, refreshments are served, the gifts are unloaded from a transfer truck into the gym and sorted to the recipients. The children then give a short program and express their thanks to the bik-ers. Then they get to open their gifts with smiling faces! Its been said, “For the children of Mills Home, it isn’t Christmas until the bikers come”. So, if you missed it this year, watch for it in The Carolinas Full Throttle Magazine Cruisin’ Calendar and go ahead and mark the first Sunday in December in your calendar for next year! Come on and join one of the best events to take place all year! You can go to www.FullThrottleMagazine.com and view and download all of the pics from this event as well as others for free. Hope to see you soon. Take care, stay safe, ride often, and have fun along the way!

2011 Ray Price Toys For Tots Run

By: Angelica Roman The 2011 Ray Price Toys for Tots Run, to benefit the US Marine Corps Reserve Toys For Tots Foundation, was larger than ever! The sunny, perfect fall weather on Saturday, December 3rd brought riders out to Ray Price Harley-Davidson/Triumph in packs. The toys came in, overflowing the barrels and piling up on the floor. The registration line quickly grew from a few people to a line out the door and into the parking lot, with over 425 people registering! Representatives from the US Marine Corps and the NC National Guard helped load the hundreds of toys into the Ray Price Drag Race rig. When it was time to leave, more than 300 motorcycles roared as they lined up behind Ray Price himself and the Raleigh HOG Chapter. The Raleigh Police Department motor unit led the ride to downtown Ra-leigh for the Veterans Memorial Service, and then headed to K-Mart and Sears Outlet in Garner, who were sponsors of the ride this year. The Meat House, another sponsor of the ride, was waiting to feed the riders with juicy, marinated steak tips and potatoes, grilled to perfection on the spot. Riders lined up, weaving through the sea of bikes, anxious to get a taste. The Triangle Area Cruisers held a Classic Car Show as part of the event. Riders voted by placing a toy in front of their favorite car, and drivers voted on their favor-ite bikes with toys as well. There was some fun competition as some people tried to wrangle friends into voting for a certain bike or car. As the event drew to a close, all the toys were piled into the Marine trucks, to be delivered to boys and girls in need throughout the community. The Ray Price family would like to thank the Marine Corps, the NC National Guard, the Raleigh HOG Chapter, The Meat House, K Mart of Garner and Sears Outlet of Garner, the Triangle Area Cruisers, The Raleigh PD, and of course the hundreds of rid-ers and customers for their generous donations of toys and time, and helping to make this year’s ride a huge success! For more information on rides and events at Ray Price Harley-Davidson / Triumph, go to www.RayPrice.com OR call 919-832-2261. 2011 Nazareth Children’s Home Christmas Toy Run

By: Darby L. Dillard What a day December 10th was! It’s hard for me to even know where to begin. From the beginning at Pat Rogers Speedway H-D until the party was over at the home, everything worked out FANTASTIC! The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Depart-ment and Rockwell Fire Department escorted about 35-40 motorcycles to the county line where the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department picked us up. Then it was on to Lowe’s Home Improvement Center to rendezvous with more bikers. We ended up with a total of 80-85 motorcycles. We also had traffic assists from Concord City, Salisbury City, and Rockwell Fire Department. The fire engine was the coolest ever with the siren blasting from the time we left Lowe’s and going through Faith and on to the Nazareth Children’s Home. Each and every Department did a fantastic job. The Buffalo Soldiers MC fed all of us turkey, ham, and sides. Plus we had more deserts than we knew what to do with thanks to more volunteers. Santa and Mrs. Claus put a smile on every face. We even had a piano player. Thank you Shawn. I can’t say thank you enough to all of the volunteers helping in so many different ways and to everyone that pitched in with a donation no matter how large or small. THANK YOU very much. We need you all. After lunch the children received their gifts and then we had a lot of fun singing. It was truly a blessed day. (On a side note: I know some were really looking forward to watching the children they bought gifts for. Please understand that there are different reasons why sometimes all of the children are not there. They may be with their families, or at their jobs, or even disciplinary reasons sometimes. I hope you still were blessed by seeing the others and by knowing the gifts will be given to the ones they were meant for.) If you haven’t ridden with us to Nazareth Children’s Home lately, we miss you and would love to see you again! The following are the wonderful sponsors: Pat Rogers Speedway H-D, The Buffalo Soldiers MC, Showmars, Law Petroleum, Tank Services and Petroleum, M&M Landscaping, Portia’s Pastries, Wanda’s Star Glazer and Moonwalk, Food Lion, Fire and Iron MC, Street Trauma, Sick Customs (believe me they are) United Claims, East Bethel Baptist of Concord, First Church of God of Concord and Ignite Church. May God bless you all!

The 31st Annual Smoky Mountain Toy Run

By: Jeff Deal On December 3rd the mountains were filled with the sounds of motorcycles as the Asheville area’s biggest ride of the year, the Smoky Mountain Toy Run, kicked off its annual toy run and chili cook off. For the first time in the last few years it was not snowing and the turn out was great. A beautiful day and some changes in the ride itself had everyone in the holiday spirit. This year the ride started at the Kearfott Motion System plant on Hwy 70 between Swannanoa and Black Mountain and ended at City-County Plaza in downtown Asheville. It also marked the first time they had a VIP package for riders. Harley-Davidson of Asheville sponsored this and let riders meet there and have breakfast from Chick-fil-A, they also got an event t-shirt, a ride pin, and a place in front of the parade for a $25 dollar donation. The chili cook-off is a way for local restaurants to show off their cooking with donations determining the winners, and, of course, the real winners are local families. Each year this ride helps provide Christmas gifts, clothes, food, and other items to the children and their families they would not otherwise have had.

Jingle Bell Ride21 Years & Still Rockin’

Story and Photo by Alan Dockery Nice weather brought hundreds of bikers out on December 3rd for the 21st Annual Toy Run to benefit the Conover School, one of the premier special education schools in North Carolina. In my 30+ years of toy runs, this has been my favorite for the 17 years I’ve been back in the Carolinas. The parade to the school included 550 bikes. What an impressive sight as all those motorcycles rode through town and overflowed the park-ing lots at the school. This toy run is different than most where bikers bring toys to a central collection point. For the Conover School Toy Run, teachers select specific toys based on the children’s wants, needs, and abilities. Bikers pay the tab through a charity managed by ride organizer Mike Dyson. This year 425 of the riders contributed to the toy run which raised $18,905 to cover expenses. Mike leads the ride, towing a custom, motorcycle-drawn sleigh, with Santa on board tossing candy to the kids. What a thrilling sight for both groups. After the kids walk around and look at the motorcycles and gather around Santa, they give something special back to the bikers. Families and the bikers gather in the gym as the children of the Conover School put on a Christmas show, singing and acting out some of the traditional songs of the season. The theme for this year’s show was “Jingle Bell Ride” with the kids singing bell-related songs. I don’t care how tough you are, you better bring something to wipe the tears from your eyes since it is such a touching show. After the singing, Santa hands out presents. “The 21st Annual Conover School Biker’s Toy Run was another success story in the Conover School history books!” said Principal Betsy Rosenbalm. “The joy of seeing our students perform and the love and attention seen in the eyes of the on-looking bik-ers and parents cannot be described in words; it can only be felt with the heart. From the rumble of the arriving bikes, to the thrill of the applause and laughter, to the sweet closing song and parting words of our dear children and event organizer, Mike Dyson, the whole event was a true display of the real meaning of Christmas. I feel so blessed to be able to be a part of this every year.” “This is our reason for the season,” Mike Dyson said. “I wish everyone could see and feel what we did. Everyone was paying attention to those kids. My biggest thanks goes out to the kids at the Conover School for letting us do this. I thank them for open-ing their school to us and for letting us do something that is good for all our hearts.” “I think we got to the hearts of more people this year”, Mike said. “There were more bikes in the parking lots and more folks in the gym. The economy may be a little better and more people ready to give. We got some real charity-hearted people on the ride this year. It was very uplifting to see how many folks enjoyed the toy run and show at the school. Everything went smoothly this year. Thanks to everyone who contributed their time and money. And thanks to the many people who donated door prizes.

Operation Santa Claus Toy Run

By: Whistle Not a better day could be had for Operation Santa Claus Toy Run than November 19th. Greenville, NC came alive for Hometown Harley’s Operation Santa Claus Toy Run and pro-duced a great turn out for all of the surrounding areas. The bikes rolled in from 9am to noon carrying toys to make kids’ Christmas wishes come true. The toys piled up as the bikers waited on the Greenville Police Department to escort the ride. The DJ kept everyone entertained and some looked up the deals on the inside. I got a new battery for the Road King so now I’m ready to ride. Shortly after noon the police escort was ready and kick-stands went up as Santa fired up and led the pack out. When the ride was over and everyone had returned to Hometown Harley, the grill was soon emptied and Scott was giving out the door prizes. With the ride over and the food ate up, bellies were full and everyone wished each other a Merry Christmas as they headed out for home. Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year from Hometown Harley.
