BackwhenFirestonetiresgotabadrapduetolowairpressureonenewscasterrecommendedcheckingthe air in one’s tires the day the rent ormortgagepaymentwasmadetoinsureamonthlycheck.Ihaveasimilartimingsystemtoinsurethattheoilinourlowuse911sgetschangedregularly.December1isreservedforthattask.ChangingOil:To begin with, I re read “Project 2: changingengine oil” inWayne Dempsey’s “101 Projects forYour Porsche 911.” I also recommend reading“Project1Jackingupyourcar”eventhoughIhavea personal long-used system and equipment.
Iassembleallthestuffhesaystogetherbeforebeginning.
IcametotheDempseybooklongafterIhadchangedlots of oil in 911s, but I like to review it anyway.
Before there was Dempsey’s book onmy bedsidestand, there was the much used John Muir book“HowtokeepyourVolkswagenAlivefortheCompleatIdiot.”That’swhereIlearnedtoalwaysstartoutwithacompleterollofpapertowelswheneveroilwasinvolved.
Another influence was SGVR member FrankOffenstein who recommended going to Jiffy Lubeorsomesuchplaceasthetotalcostwaslessthandoing it yourself. Thiswas after he factored in thecostoftheteeshirtthatwasalwaysruinedduringtheoilchange.I almost forgot Clyde Baker’s “ModernGunsmithing” 1929 edition. So it was December1 and therewere three 911s needing oil changes.
Ihadthethreecasesof20-50,threefilters,sixseals,a new roll of paper towels, a long-handled ratchetwith15mmsocket,anoilfilterwrench,latexgloves;and I wore a battered “1996 22ndAnnual HistoricRaces” tee shirt. The pretty one with a horizontal“Porsche”crossingavertical“Lotus”onablackandwhite checker board. I also had aTrader Joe’s 26ounce paper coffee can.(ex-French Dark Roast)
Ibackedthe‘88Carreraontoapairof4x4swiththeendscutatabout45degreeshorizontally.Iwould
have preferred to have usedmy steel ramps, as Ihadwiththe‘70and‘the82,buttheyweretoohighfortheCarreratoclear.Idevelopedthiswoodramptechnique in the early(19)50s when I had my firstclappedoutVWand couldn’t even spell floor jack.ByusinganOklahomacreeper(bigpieceofcardboard)Iwaseasilyabletogetunderandpullthedrainplugs.TheCarreraengine,unlikethe‘70or‘82hadoneofthedrainplugsscrewedintotheenginehorizontally.And it was tight. And approached from the rearof the car, the wrench had to be turned upwardtoward the engine. As it was tight I knew it wouldbreak loose whanging my hand against the blockso I was careful not to let that happen. But it did;so I have a Carrera whang mark on the arthriticthumbthatwasalreadyhurtinganywaysonobiggy.
I cut off a plastic oil bottle about in half at abouta 45 degree angle and stuck it in the oil fillerand used it as a funnel to get most of the oilout of their bottles and into that not particularlyconvenient filler. When the oil change is complete, the funnel goes into a plastic bag in the baggagecompartment with spare oil for on-the-road use.
This funnel doesn’t allow for everylast drop to drain from the bottles.Icapturedthelastdropsbyinvertingthenearlyemptybottles,oneatatime,intothecoffee“can.”Iputacut-up,cleanteeshirttooraggedforweareven,whilechangingoil,inthecan,wipeditaroundabituntilitwasprettyuniformlyoiledandputthecan’slidonittokeeptheclothfreeofgrit.ClydeBakerrecommendedthissoonewouldalwayshaveaclean,lightlyoiledcloth to wipe on metal that was prone to rusting.
