What in the world does martial arts have
to do with golf? EVERYTHING says Ryan
White and he should, know. He is the only
expert on the entire planet (unless someone
comes forth that I’m not aware of) that has
intimate knowledge of both sports, integrat-
ing and applying axioms from both disci-
plines resulting in significant improvement in
golfing performance—whether the golfer is
a beginner, intermediate, advanced, club or
Tour professional. Irrespective of age, from
5 to 95, students of Black Belt Golf improve
all phases of body development as it relates to
golf and the golf swing.
The principles and exercises White has
developed for over a decade has culminated
in White leaving a lucrative accounting pro-
fession to create an entirely new and innova-
tive training system named Black Belt Golf.
The seed for the actual development of
Black Belt Golf started 30 years ago. Ryan
White began playing golf and practicing mar-
tial arts at the age of 7. Although he was di-
agnosed as legally blind in his right eye and
suffered from asthma, Ryan excelled at both
sports.
Golf became his passion and in high
school he earned the number one spot on the
varsity golf team. Cal State University Long
Beach came calling and offered White a full-
scholarship to play on its golf team where he
played on the travelling squad and earned a
degree in accounting. After graduation, he be-
came a CPA.
Numbers can be exciting for those in-
clined, however, nothing matches the allure
of martial arts once you’ve had a taste of it.
White dedicated himself to Tae Kwon Do
and earned a 2nd Degree Black Belt. This is
when the inspiration to create Black Belt Golf
emerged. “As a result of all the exercises and
moves encompassed in Tae Kwon Do, I no-
ticed an amazing difference in the speed and
strength of my golf swing,” said White, ex-
plaining when the light bulb went off to cre-
ate Black Belt Golf. “I immediately realized
if the martial arts could improve my golf
game so appreciably, then the same would be
true for all golfers. I named my company
Black Belt Golf because the personal train-
ing I advocate is a fusion of the martial arts
and golf, and it’s compatible with my ad-
vanced training in both.”
Ryan White currently teaches advanced
Tae Kwon Do classes in the Coachella Valley
and serves clients with Black Belt Golf per-
sonal training on a one-on-one basis or in
group sessions.
Ryan White is the closest thing to Super-
man I’ve ever seen, except he doesn’t fly, nor
does he have x-ray vision or loses strength in
the presence of Kryptonite. What he can do
and teach you to do is absolutely phenome-
nal. I had the privilege in-person to watch
Ryan’s six hour one-day work out. It was a
sight to behold; an experience that has for-
ever changed my outlook on working out and
improving my mind and body.
I experienced Ryan’s entire regimen—
from 9 a.m. beginning with a quick one
minute meditation to over 70 exercises in-
cluding warm-ups, repetitions of stretches,
kicking, and hitting golf balls, plus at the gym
multiple repetitions of jumping rope, punch-
ing bag, bench pressing, barbell lifts, dumb-
bell squats, chin ups, leg raises, push ups
culminating in lifting a 250-lb heavy ma-
chinery tire at 4 p.m. I was absolutely in awe
of Ryan’s six hour performance, and it’s a
regimen he does three times or more a week!
What Ryan insists on is that anybody can
do it. He means there is nothing different
about him than anybody else. With mental
discipline and tremendous will, any golfer
can start with the Black Belt Golf White Belt
Lesson and move through the belts to achieve
phenomenal improvement in his or her
health, strength, golf game, and appreciation
of life. This is not idle talk, it absolutely can
happen. Ryan White and his Black Belt Golf
program are living proof. Experience the
power of Black Belt Golf and call Ryan at:
(760) 469-9440 or (760) 902-0188.

Twitter Golf: Is It for the Ego-Minded or Ego-less? By Ried Holien
The golf world shook when the following announcement ap-
peared online November 17th, 2010, at the social-networking site
Twitter: “What’s up everyone. Finally decided to try out twitter!”
Okay, so maybe that’s not exactly earthshaking. Still, it
made headline news because the person posting it bore the ID
@TigerWoods. His agents registered a Twitter account for him in
June, 2009. Only nobody ever posted anything, so it lay dormant.
Then, surprisingly, came “What’s up everyone.” It arrived with
the right login ID, though proper use of a question mark was miss-
ing, and it set web-heads scrambling to verify its authenticity. This
seemed a reasonable precaution. After all, someone calling himself
Tiger Woods had been “tweeting” (the act of posting on Twitter)
regularly for over a year already. While the name was the same, few
believed that person to be the pro golfer. That account tweeted such
lines as, “Cruising in my Cadi, looking for skanks” or “Mo’ money,
Mo’ bitches” and “Wife busted me. Damn! Fun is over!!!” However
accurate those posts may have been in reality, most knew Woods
wouldn’t actually admit such things in public.
Tiger Woods Continues His SanitationThis new tweet, however, sounded just as sanitized as any com-
ment Woods makes regularly in press conferences, so readers knew
it could be true. A few hours later, Tiger himself verified it by post-
ing: “Yep, it’s me. I think I like this twitter thing. You guys are awe-
some. Thanks for all the love.” (Apparently the last line was di-
rected at supportive fans, not past mistresses.)
Soon after, Woods went on a nationally syndicated radio show
to explain his reasons for tweeting. He said, “It’s about time I
again made a connection to fans who have been pretty great to me
in the past year.”
Questions immediately popped up, such as:
• What does he mean by “again”? Did he ever make an honest
effort to connect with fans before?
• Why is he on Twitter? Is he trying to make up for the preced-
ing year when his social networking with a dozen or more “social
partners” nearly destroyed his career and did destroy his marriage?
Contrived ploy or not, people flocked to read Tiger’s tweets.
In under an hour, the @TigerWoods account gained 30,000 “fol-
lowers.” That means people who sign up to receive any and all up-
dates. Within days, that number soared past a quarter million.
Some posts were incredibly obvious and not very insightful.
After losing in a playoff at the Chevron World Challenge on De-
cember 5th, Woods wrote: “Really hate losing. Graeme (McDow-
ell) did what he needed to do to win and I didn’t.” This is not meant
to ridicule Woods. If he honestly connects with fans, regardless the
forum or motivation, it’s good for the game. Besides, his use ofPLEASE SEE PAGE 27

Mid-Round Corrections That Can “Stop The Bleeding”
We have all experienced those rounds of golf that look hopeful to start and then dis-
appointingly go downhill at a hasty clip. We immediately try old swing thoughts that once
worked or the latest tip “de jure” that we may have read or seen. This usually just makes
the situation worse and we are now in the middle of a round doing something that usually
spells disaster to our score-thinking—an array of mechanical thoughts— instead of just vi-
sualizing a shot and then hitting it.
Here are three suggestions that can hopefully “stop the bleeding” and get us back on
track for an enjoyable round of golf.
1. Finish the Swing in Balance.
We all know there are no “quick fixes” to improving your game; but there is one partic-
ular swing fundamental that is applicable to every golfer no matter in what style or manner
they swing the club. This is the ability to finish the swing in a balanced position. This is
probably the one thing (maybe the only thing) almost all instructors would agree upon. Striv-
ing to attain a balanced finish has the “retroactive” effect of improving our tempo, rhythm,
sequencing, and transition from backswing to downswing, just to name a few. It is one area
where we can improve by “learning the swing backwards.” When things are going south,
make a real effort to finish in balance and your swing may return.
Instructionputting
maples method by Willie Maples
The Long and Short of the Long-Putter
Virtually all golfers agree—putting is very important and we can
all improve at it. In my golf career, putting in the past has been an el-
ement of my game that’s not been as good as the rest. Thanks to the
long-putter, my putting has improved dramatically.
My average used to be 36 putts per round when a decent aver-
age is 30 to 32 putts per round. It isn’t enjoyable to lose 4 to 6 shots
per round by not being able to make putts that you should be mak-
ing.
The first person I saw use the long-putter was Charlie Owens,
who I played many tour rounds with in Florida. He was a great
player. A player of that quality going to a long-putter caught my at-
tention.
What the long-putter has done is elongated many players’ ca-
reers; Bernhard Langer, V.J. Singh, Rocco Mediate and Tom Kite
are just a few examples. The long-putter puts a fixed position on one end and allows
you to make a smooth pendulum stroke. I have found it to be the
easiest way of putting mechanically. A fixed position is simpler and
easiest. Through trial and practice, you need to find the position of the
ball and location of your hands that fits best for you.
With the success of the long-putter, you now see younger play-
ers who are not at the end of their careers on the PGA Tour and LPGA
Tour using it, because of the benefits the putter offers.
The purpose behind the long putter is to give the golfer a chance
to make putts from ten feet and shorter—putts you are expected to
make at a high percentage. With the long-putter pendulum swing,
your chance of success on making short putts increases. Though you
won’t make every putt, your chances of success increase.
I have found the most challenging thing when using the long-
putter is to adopt the feel for the length and speed of putts beyond ten
feet. One reason being the stroke tends to be a little bit longer than a
two-handed putt.
Most amateur golfers do not have time nor are they willing to
make the effort to adequately practice part of the game that’s 50% of
scoring, namely putting. Therefore, why not take advantage of sim-
pler mechanics and a more repetitious stroke that the long-putter pro-
vides.
All the major manufacturers make the long putters now. There’s
no longer a need to put the components together in your basement.

Casino’s Eagle Falls Golf Course.

Instructionsetup
golf with geiberger by Al Geiberger
Face It! Fine Tuning Your Aim
“Mr. 59”
During setup, taking the correct aim is crucial in exe-
cuting a successful shot. To hit the ball in the right direc-
tion, you have to aim it. Simple as that sounds—and it
really is simple—it probably gives golfers more trouble
than any other phase of the game.
To have any chance of getting the ball started on the
line you want, you must first get the clubface straight
with that line, then get the parts of your body straight
with the clubface. Let’s start with the clubface.
In fact, that’s the first thing you do—aim the clubface.
Most golfers’ aiming problems are the result of lining up
their bodies first, then trying to get the clubface aimed.
Because they probably have lined their bodies up at the
target, their clubfaces are going to be aimed to the right
of the target, which means trouble.
So first aim the clubface on the line on which you
want the ball to start. Work in practice toward acquiring a
sense of what a squarely aimed clubface looks like. There
are some devices you can use. Scratch a line in the turf in
the direction of your target. Or place a club or a board
parallel to your target line. Then be sure your clubface is
set square or perpendicular to the line when you address
the ball. Always relate the position of the clubface to the
target as well as the line, so you can learn to identify a
square clubface when you get on the course without the
use of artificial aids.
One “device” you can use on the course is the inter-
mediate spot, which is simply some identifiable mark or
object on your target line a few feet in front of your ball.
Standing behind your ball, pick out the spot in front of
the ball, and then when you setup to the ball aim your
clubface square to the spot instead of your target. The
theory is that it’s easier to aim at a close-by object than
one in the distance. You also get a better idea of the line
on which you want to swing the club.
From Al Geiberger’s book TEMPO, available through
your favorite bookstore. Geiberger has 22 combined wins
on the PGA and Champions tours. He will forever be
known as the Original Mr. 59, the first golfer to ever
shoot 59 in competition on any of the major Tours in the
world.

Venturi’s View by Ken Venturi
Learning From One of the All-Time Greats— Sam Snead
DON’T LEAN ON YOUR CLUB AT ADDRESS
It’s tough to criticize any part of Sam Snead’s swing. It’s a
great swing to try to copy, and people have been doing just that
for more than 50 years.
But Sam did have one little move that I wouldn’t recom-
mend. When he got ready to hit a driver, he made his usual wag-
gle, but then just before he pulled the club away from the ball,
he pressed the clubhead down onto the turf. This was just a little
habit of Sam’s, and obviously it didn’t hurt him one bit.
But let’s be honest, there was only one Sam Snead. Most
players who make this move wind up increasing the tension in
their hands and arms. They also tend to lean forward when they
do this, which extends their weight out on their toes, thus caus-
ing a loss of balance.
I suggest you hold the club so that it barely touches the
grass. This will allow you to take the club away from the ball
more smoothly. I also suggest you feel free to copy as much of
the rest of Sam’s game as you can!
TIMING & TEMPO
It’s difficult to exaggerate how important good tempo is to
the golf swing. The old saying “Find me a guy with a fat wallet
and a fast backswing, and I can be very happy” isn’t far from
the truth. A player can get by with some swing faults if he has a
good tempo, but even the soundest swing in the world will occa-
sionally come undone if it’s too fast.
One way to develop a good tempo for your swing is to
watch or think about a player with outstanding tempo. Sam
Snead is one player who invariably comes to mind. My tempo
was always better when I played with Sam, and I bet yours will
improve if you try to keep his swing or that kind of swing in
mind when you practice and play.

Vince Lombardi Predicted I’d Win the U.S. Open
The final day of the U.S. Open is always the game’s most ex-acting test, 36 holes [in 1964] of trying to negotiate narrow fair-ways, deep rough, fast greens, and fragile emotions. On everyhole, par, as the cliché goes, is a good score. This year’s contestwould be even tougher than usual. No fault, to be fair, of theUSGA. The blame belonged to Mother Nature. It was hot, reallyhot, and it would get even hotter. Today was going to be a chal-lenge just to survive. My playing partner was Ray Floyd, a promising 21-year-old kid.
I remembered when I was a promising 21-year-old kid—a lifetimeago. On the opening hole, I received a sign. Maybe today was going
to be my day. I sent my approach on the par-4 to about 12 feetand hit what I thought was a wonderful putt. But the ball stoppedon the lip, refusing to take one more small dive into the hole. Istared at it for as long as I could under the rules, hoping to willthe ball into the cup. I gave up, finally, and walked over to tap itin. At that moment, the ball disappeared. A gift, I decided, free-ing me to toss aside my conservative game plan. “You have oneshot to play with,” I told myself. “Fire at every flag until you losethat shot.”Making that putt also made an impression on a certain spec-
tator in the gallery, Vince Lombardi. Lombardi, the legendarycoach of the Green Bay Packers, told a friend that he was con-vinced I would be the champion“How can you tell?” the friend asked“Just take a look at him,” Lombardi said. “His eyes are dead.
They’re the coldest I’ve ever seen. He beats them going away.”Over the years, a few of his players told me that Lombardi oftenbrought my name up during his halftime speeches to motivatethem. “You look into that guy across from you on the line,” hewould say, “and his eyes better know that your eyes own him. Thegreatest eyes I ever saw in my life were Ken Venturi’s when hestared at that ball. I feel he made the ball move.” Last time I sawLombardi, about four years later, he was still talking about it. “I’llnever forget that look on your face,” he said.
For Ken Venturi’s entire life story, read his autobiography GET-TING UP & DOWN: MY 60 YEARS IN GOLF available at your fa-vorite bookstore. Above is an excerpt from the book. Venturi won 14 PGA Tour tournaments between 1957 and
1967, including the 1964 U.S. Open Championship, a brilliant ca-reer shortened by carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.

Pain Free Doesn’t Exist
Instructiongolf as I see it by John Cookdetermination
GolfNews Magazine: Thinking of the shoulder injury you had
many years ago and your wrist injury in 1982 that didn’t com-
pletely get resolved until 1989 and other injuries you’ve had to en-
dure since, how many Tour players play hurt?
JOHN COOK: Almost everybody has something going on.
Otherwise, they wouldn’t be in the trailer everyday getting
stretched or getting worked on. Usually it’s back, shoulder, or neck
types of little pains. And small injuries in hands, wrists, and el-
bows. We can’t afford to miss a whole lot, so we play hurt more
than a lot of people think.
One of the misconceptions is that we ‘don’t get hurt’ at all.
Granted we’re not going to break a leg or we’re not going to sep-
arate a shoulder, but we’re going to play with discomfort a lot.
The game is played mostly by feel and not by aggression;
there’s nobody there to back you up or substitute for you. You have
to go on. I can’t remember the last time playing pain free. But that’s
the way we do it.
GN: Is this somewhat typical?
COOK: Oh, yeah. There are plenty of guys that are almost
pain free but have little tweaks, little aches and pains.
We have to make X amount of dollars to continue our career.
That’s the way our system is set up. You just don’t show up dur-
ing the week and be guaranteed money. That’s not the way it is.
And that’s the way it should be. You just have to play with some
pain.
GN: So looking at these beautiful golf swings on television —
it’s a misconception that the body is flowing pain free?
COOK: A guy might have bursitis in the shoulder, a C2, C3
disk problem, or something else wrong with his spine…
GN: It doesn’t really show.
COOK: Right. It’s amazing the amount of pain players can
play with. Golf is an unnatural game with an unnatural swing, so
you’re fighting the way your body works.
That’s why we have our trainers out on Tour. They do such a
good job; they get you ready to play no matter how you’re feeling.
Given enough time, they treat and rehab you and eliminate a lot of
what’s going on. And that’s why personal trainers in everyday life
for everyone have become more and more popular.
John Cook was able to transcend his aches and pains in great
fashion in 2010 to rank No. 3 on the Champions Tour money list
with earnings over $1.9 million plus a $300,000 annuity.

To Master the Golf Swing, Working on Anything Else Other Than Club Head Lag Is A Waste of Time

By doing the practice techniquedescribed below, you will learnwhat club head lag is, how clubhead lag feels and you will be ableto apply it to your swing. Why isclub head lag important? Becauseit allows the golfer to optimally ben-efit from centrifugal force and theforce of gravity. (This practice tech-nique is done with no golf ball.)

When youget to the proper vertical position, notice howthe club feels almost weightless, particularlycompared to when the club is not completely90 degree vertical.

Twitter is better than most. Thousands of people post
anything on Twitter, from whenever they go potty to
how often they cut their toenails. In other words, while
Twitter may have been created as a place for people to
connect with one another, it has become more an open,
unfiltered platform for venting.
Tweeting Equals InsecurityCritics ridicule Twitter for providing a forum for
empty, inane commentary. The UK Times Online pub-
lished an article penned by several prominent psy-
chologists who equated Tweeting with insecurity.
“Twittering stems from a lack of identity,” the article
contends. “It’s a constant update of who you are, what
you are, where you are. Using Twitter suggests a level
of insecurity whereby, unless people recognize you,
you cease to exist.”
This assessment may apply to some, but it does
not explain why so many professional athletes, in-
cluding golfers, tweet. It might actually be the reverse.
Some pro athletes have such enormous egos they may
believe everyone wants to know everything about
them. Sometimes their revelations end up hurting
them.

Venturi’s View by Ken Venturi
Open Championship, a brilliant ca-reer shortened by carpal tunnel syndrome and arthritis.

while he’s on them (result: he stays home
alone most nights). NBA player Gilbert Are-
nas got suspended after tweeting that he
brought a gun into the Washington Wizards
locker room. Kansas City Chiefs running
back Larry Johnson got cut after tweeting
negative comments about his coach. With
some golfers, motivation for tweeting might
be simply materialistic. Tiger wants to re-
pair his image as a bankable corporate
pitchman. John Daly pitches a line of his
outrageously colorful pants via Twitter.
Anna Rawson makes sure her followers
know where to attend one of her endorsed
golf academies.
While profit might generate some
tweets, it by no means explains why most
are written. Consider Stacy Lewis. She’s a
rising star on the LPGA Tour, but her tweets
sound like most any other college coed. Of
a dozen or so of her most recent posts, only
one dealt directly with golf. Most followed
the Arkansas Razorbacks football team.
“Driving to little rock for the game today!
Wooo pig!!!” she wrote on November 27th.
That was followed later that day with the
following game recap: “Wow what a
game!!! Woooo pig!!!”
Stacy’s not alone either. Few pro golfers
post anything related to golf. Christina Kim,
another LPGA star, writes about eating pan-
cakes. In one recent post, she talked about
other food, tweeting: “I can only imagine
the weird dreams I’m going to have tonight.
Last night included a doped human curry in
Papua New Guinea. I didn’t eat it!” Stewart
Cink is called the “Tweetfather” on tour be-
cause of his love for the medium, as well for
having 1.2 million followers. He’s the most
popular golfer on Twitter and also likes in-
forming fans what he eats at most meals. He
even posts pictures of fast food burgers be-
fore biting into them.
Golf-Related Tweets; Some Cause Trouble
Cink does tweet golf, however. His
most famous came when he posted a picture
of himself kissing the Claret Jug in the
locker room just minutes after winning the
British Open.
Ian Poulter may soon overtake Cink for
having the most Twitter followers. Poulter
posts regularly about golf, and even runs
promotions where he gives away golf equip-
ment when he hits a certain number of fol-
lowers.

Part 2 of a multi-part seriesThe attraction that most golfers have to the sport that it’s an
individual endeavor—you and you alone strike the ball and you
and you alone earn the results—good, bad or ugly. However,
golfers often have a swing coach, mentor, caddie, husband, wife,
trainer, or instructor to rely on for support. Fortunately, the reign-
ing Senior Women’s Amateur Champion, La Quinta resident
Mina Hardin, has a partner that loves golf and excels at it—her
husband, mentor, and caddie Gary Hardin.
“When I was 21, we met in Houston,” explained Mina smil-
ing. “Gary was highly recommended as a golf teacher and he’s a
great teacher. I was a student of Gary’s and we were good friends
for a year and a half. We decided the good friendship had grown
into something greater. We were compatible and respected each
other. It wasn’t difficult to say ‘Yes’ to his proposal. We’ve been
married 27 years and along with all the wonderful aspects of our
marriage, I don’t have to pay for the lessons anymore.” Mina’s
sense of humor often percolates in conversation, not necessarily
on the golf course during competition when her game face can
match Ben Hogan’s.
Gary played on the PGA Tour in 1976 and is a former New
York and Houston club pro.“Gary’s been my best friend, sup-
porting me through everything—the ups and downs,” continued
Hardin. “That’s why the win at the Senior Women’s Champi-
onship was so special to me because he was on the bag as my
caddie.
“In 2001, when I got to the finals of the U.S. Mid-Amateur,
Gary was not able to be there with me because he was playing in
the Men’s U.S. Mid-Amateur. To share my victory with my best
friend was wonderful, to say the least.”
Gary’s also her partner in devotion to God. Mina makes it
very clear that she’s a proud devoted Catholic and her religious
beliefs are an important part of her golfing success. “Gary and I
share the same religious belief—we view ourselves as members of
a triangle, with God on top and each of us on the bottom corners. As
we both approach God, we get closer together as a couple.”
Mina’s victory in the 2010 Senior Women’s Championship is
particularly meaningful considering she has two severely dam-
aged main nerves in her left arm, which means she’s relying on
only one main nerve in that arm. The pain is virtually constant,
she says, and she limits the number of balls she hits on the driv-
ing range when practicing.
She’s had the pain for four years, surgery is the only option,
and for now she’s electing to rely on aspirin and Aleve rather than
going under the knife. “Rest makes the nerves less angry,” said
Hardin, as though they are adolescents, ready to erupt at any time.
“I know what makes them angry—for one, hitting a lot of balls.”
Fortunately, Mina has been able to utilize the expert instruc-
tion of Mike Wilson at The Palms Golf Club where she is a mem-
ber. “Mike has helped me tweak my golf swing because he knows
my physical limitations. He’s taught me to develop a swing with-
out it hurting me.”
Can you imagine a player that was in such pain four years ago
that she had to take six months off from swinging a club, then
playing through the pain for four years to win the highest achieve-
ment in amateur golf in her age bracket—the USGA Senior
Women’s Championship? John Wayne might have been known
for his true grit but no one has more courage and tenacity than
Mina Hardin.
In next month’s issue of GolfNews Magazine, Dan Poppers
will continue to delve into Mina Hardin’s fascinating life includ-
ing how the high-level, intense competition at The Palms Golf
Club has made her a better player.

SilverRock’s Phenomenal Success Streak Continues
Venue of the Bob Hope Classic Attracts Worldwide Attention
What desert golf course has the most in
common with UCLA’s (& John Wooden’s) 88
game win streak (10 national championships in
12 years), Edwin Moses 10-year 122 consecu-
tive wins in the high hurdles, and Oklahoma’s
NCAA record of 47 consecutive football victo-
ries? Answer: SilverRock Resort.
Year after year, through good economic
times and bad, SilverRock Resort in La Quinta
has excelled in total number of rounds played
and has increased revenues. Under the leadership
of General Manager Randy Duncan of Land-
mark Golf Company, 2009-2010 was another
record-breaking fiscal year with 42,000 paid
rounds of golf. What’s the secret to SilverRock’s
success?
“With every year, SilverRock becomes
more popular,” said Randy Duncan. “With the
national exposure of the Bob Hope Classic, Sil-
verRock has become a course locals know, and
people all across America and internationally
have become familiar with.
“Tour players and amateur golfers that play
SilverRock continue to express appreciation of
the course, saying it’s tough but very fair. It’s a
course that rewards good shot-making and fore-
thought. Players continue to compliment the con-
dition of the course. For a public golf course, the
greens roll very true and the fairways are always
lush. Just the other day a group that plays regu-
larly at SilverRock came up to me and said they
always enjoy playing here because the course is
always in great shape, the staff always treats them
with kindness and professionalism and we have
great food!”
One overwhelming theme is golfers love
the ambiance and aesthetic beauty of SilverRock.
The course hugs the majestic mountains while
blue skies virtually always prevail. SilverRock is
in a setting that feels exquisitely private; a desert
Shangri-la.
Along with being the home of the Bob
Hope Classic, SilverRock is one of the three ven-
ues hosting the prestigious Giddings Cup
founded by Ernie Vossler, Dick Giddings and
General Bill Yancey. The 29th Giddings Cup will
be played April 4-7, 2011 at La Quinta CC
(Tues), Mountain View CC (Wed) and Silver-
Rock Resort (Thur). The public is invited to
come on out and watch the best super senior am-
ateur players in the country show their skills. It’s
guaranteed, you will be impressed and inspired.
The two days before this year’s Bob Hope
Classic week will be exciting for those who like
golf expos. January 15-16 on the driving range
the Bob Hope Golf Show at SilverRock takes
place 10 a.m.-4 p.m. All the major golf manu-
facturers will have their latest equipment for you
to demo along with other golf accessory compa-
nies showing their wares. The expo is open to the
public and admission is free. You will have the
opportunity to win free Bob Hope Classic tickets,
and food and beverage will be available.
Played from 7,400 yards, you’d think Sil-
verRock would bring PGA Tour pros to their
knees. Not the case. Testament to their superior
play is Bubba Watson’s phenomenal course
record 62 shot last year in the second round of
the Bob Hope Classic. Watson’s 29-33 (9 birdies
and 1 eagle) was a sight to behold. “I was fortu-
nate to watch him hit several shots,” said Dun-
can. “And I was in awe.”
Playing a golf course that’s set up exactly
under PGA Tour conditions is a treat few golfers
ever realize. THIS IS YOUR CHANCE.
SilverRock will be open for public play
Sunday, January 23 (yes, on the final day of the
Bob Hope Classic which will be played on the
Palmer Private course at PGA WEST). Tourna-
ment grandstands will still be up along with the
official tee identification signs. Take one blink
and you’re playing in a PGA Tour event (whether
you’re striking the ball like a PGA Tour player is
a whole other matter). If you want to play under
tournament conditions, call SilverRock immedi-
ately at (888) 600-7272 or (760) 777-8884 and
make your tee-time reservation. Sunday’s tee
times are expected to be sold-out.

the Coachella Valley”.
Indian Springs G.C. is especially
known for its superior greens conditions.
Indian Springs’ ads carry a tag line that
states “Our Greens are a Perfect 10.” A
‘Perfect 10’ has multiple meanings. Firstly,
on a scale of 1 to 10, a 10 is the absolute
highest quality one can achieve. Secondly,
the green speeds are maintained at a per-
fect tournament speed of 10 on the USGA
stimpmeter. It doesn’t get any better than
a 10! The golf course features 360º
panoramic views of the mountains while
navigating 18 holes with 8 lakes, 2 creeks
and multiple waterfalls. With 4 sets of tees,
this public layout caters to all levels of
golfers and though considered ‘player
friendly’ to the higher handicap golfer, it
can also test the single digit handicapper
from its 6,794 yard Championship Tees
and has become one of the “must play”
courses in the Palm Springs area.
General Manager and owner, Neil
Finch along with his Canadian partners
proudly state, “We are very proud of the
reputation we have received. We are
known as an excellent value with fast
greens and a fast pace of play that averages
4 hours. We’re trying hard to not only live
up to, but to exceed these expectations of
our valued guests.” You will enjoy the
Country Club Service of Indian Springs at
Daily Fee Course Rates. Rates are very
reasonable with even in-season rates from

believes it to be “The Best Golf Value in

Indian Springs’ hospitality philosophy
is to make sure that every golfer and guest

laxed environment at Indian Springs. For
example, every golfer receives our unique
“Trunk to Trunk Service,” meaning from
the moment you drive up and your clubs
are taken from the trunk of your car to

Three Aces—A Winning Hand! The Incredible Golf Feat That Will In All Likelihood Never Be Duplicated By Dan Poppers
Part 1 of a multi-part series
Introduction
“I first met Bob Fleming, Dan Condie,
Marc Arcuri and David Schumacher in
Sacramento in 1986. I played golf regularly
with them until 2004, and then returned to
Palm Desert. A little less than five years ago,
I got a call from David Schumacher and he
told me an unbelievable story.
He explained that Katie Couric and the
Today Show were going to do a feature on
Fleming, Condie, and Arcuri’s amazing three
shots. Shortly after, David called me back and
said Katie Couric was told by co-host Matt
Lauer that it was impossible for such a feat to
have happened and their appearance was
cancelled.
The following is a history of what tran-
spired. But first let me say that I know these
four individuals and the impossible thing
about them is lying or cheating. Condie and
Fleming are accomplished players winning
the Sacramento Masters Championship sev-
eral times and countless other tournaments.
I may also add that their community and fam-
ily life made me feel honored to play in their
foursome on more than just a few occasions.
So let the story begin.”
—Ed Owen
Some golf feats should never be forgot-
ten. Every generation deserves to know Jack
Nicklaus’ incredible sixth Masters victory in
1986 at age 46, Byron Nelson’s never-to-be-
broken record of 11 consecutive PGA Tour
wins, and… the amazing three shots that took
place north of Sacramento on April 13, 2005,
by Bob Fleming, Marc Acuri, and Dan
Condie at the Antelope Greens Golf Course
15th hole. It’s a short hole, only 105 yards;
however, the odds of this event taking place
are estimated at 27 trillion to 1.
Those of you that question the validity of
this actually happening, particularly after the
charade Jacqueline Gagne put us through
with her imaginary string of hole-in-ones,
there is scientific proof that Fleming, Acuri,
Condie, and David Schumacher (witness and
fourth member of the foursome) are telling
the truth. More on this proof later.
“It’s something that no one has likely
seen before,” wrote Steve Pajak in the Sacra-
mento Bee. “The odds of an average golfer
making a hole in one are 12,700 to 1, ac-
cording to the National Hole in One Associ-
ation. GolfDigest pegs the odds of two
players in the same foursome acing the same
hole at 17 million to 1. When three players
on an Australian course made aces within 10
minutes, HoleInOne.com said the feat was 27
trillion to 1.”
After the three shots were reported at the
clubhouse, Pete Ames, Antelope Greens as-
sistant manager, said that he had heard of one
player making two holes in one on the course
but never three by three players in the same
round on the same hole. “If it was your aver-
age Joe coming in, I’d say you guys are full
of it,” said Ames firmly, defending the cred-
ibility of the three ace-makers. “But I happen
to know these guys and have played a lot golf
with them. I’m 100 percent positive about it.”
At the time the three aces dove into the
15th hole, Fleming and Condie held 1.7
handicaps. Acuri estimated his handicap to be
5. Pundits might question why these accom-
plished players were playing such a short
course with only 14 par 3s and four par 4s.
They said they selected the executive course
because it was late in the afternoon and they
wanted to play and finish 18 holes. Most of
us would agree, anything less than 18 holes
doesn’t really count as a legitimate round of
golf.
When Pajak’s Sacramento Bee story was
published, there was an immediate outcry of
foul. On one gambling website, the follow-
ing comments were uttered: “I think it sounds
like bullsh*t” (JoeyrollNy); “Odds of it hap-
pening are +2700000000000 so that tells me
the odds that they are full of crap are just
about -2300000000000 (Picksix); “Its just a
fish tale, no way it happened” (shoebox); “All
scratch golfers, okay-maybe” (TTinCO).
Buddyboy doctored up a photo showing
the hole on the green to be 16 or so feet in di-
ameter (Check it out, log on to Google and
put in keywords “3 straight holes in one, what
are the chances majorwager.com,” then scroll
to the end. Photoshop at its best.)
What are four honest golfers with in-
tegrity beyond reproach to do when they are
accused of being “full of crap” and spewing
“bullsh*t”? The sole credible witness, David
Schumacher, had the answer. Take a lie de-
tector test. Schumacher, spending $4000 of
his own money, ordered an 8-hour polygraph
test in the quest to authenticate the four
golfers’ story and shut the naysayers up once
and for all. The polygraph examiner was con-
sidered the best in the business with 25 years
of lie detection training and experience. Results of that lie detector test in next
month’s GolfNews Magazine, Part 2:

2. Quick Method to Correct Your
Swing Path
Every golfer has a distinct swing path.
Some golfers divot patterns on the practice
tee are as unique as their signature. This
swing path creates an identifiable ball flight
pattern that is consistent—good or bad. Al-
though there are lots of possibilities created
by the combination of clubface angle and
swing path, two types are most common. The
out-to-in path (your divot will be left of the
target) and will usually create sliced or faded
woods and pulled (maybe with a small fade)
short irons. The opposite, the in-to-out path
causes pushes and hooks with longer clubs,
and thin shots that usually fly to the right with
short clubs. When we get out of sorts these
two paths become exaggerated. Fades be-
come big slices and draws become hooks.
To get back to square one try this: most
every tee area is on a plateau with sides to it.
If you tend to have an out-to-in path, take
practice swings on the side of the tee that
slopes uphill. You should choke up and try to
sweep the grass smoothly. Conversely, if
yours is an in-to-out swing pattern reverse the
situation. Practice your swing on the down-
hill slope. Be patient with this exercise and
see if your “A” game doesn’t return.
3. Ball Position Correction.
You’re in the middle of your round and
an annoying pattern is developing. Tee shots
are missing consistently landing in the rough
on the same side or you’re becoming inti-
mately familiar with what seems like the
same green side bunker on each hole. The
problem could be ball position. Where you
are contacting the ball in the arc of the swing
could be causing the directional problem. If
things are consistently going left move the
ball back (go with 1 ball-width to start); if
going right is the problem, moving the ball
forward could temporarily bring shots back
on track.
In conclusion, all three of these sug-
gestions are not necessarily meant to be long-
term corrections. A trip to see your local
PGA professional and subsequent hard work
is the only real solution to a swing issue. That
said, one of these three suggestions could
thwart a mid-round meltdown and in the long
run provide some valid feedback for swing
improvement.

struction at Rosewood Lakes G.C., Reno,
Nevada.
