Project Objectives / Goals

(1) Working through the resources of the Community Research Core at the Yale

Center for Interdisciplinary Research on AIDS (CIRA), we will contact

community leaders and key individuals at programs that provide these

communities with prevention services, substance abuse treatment, and HIV care

who will be interviewed to generate an understanding of each community’s

structure and access to resources.

(2) Working with the community agencies, we will contact active IDUs (both HIV+

and HIV-) who will be interviewed in depth about their drug use, their attitudes

about substance abuse treatment and medical care, and their interactions with the

care systems in their community.

(3) Interview data will be transcribed and analyzed taking a grounded theory approach

to construct an understanding of individual experiences of substance abuse and

HIV risks, of the context in which those risks exist, and of interacting with health

services.

(1) To assemble and follow a cohort of 600 injectors who reside outside the six large cities of southwestern Connecticut, enrolling injectors who inject primarily in the communities in which they reside (suburban-focused injectors) and who inject primarily in the urban centers where they purchase drugs (urban-focused injectors).

(2) To test hypotheses about the influences of environmental context of injecting on HIV knowledge, risky injection practices, HIV/hepatitis infections, and incarceration.

(3) To determine the long-term consequences of the environment in which suburban injectors inject.
