Both of the motions were passed by the Softball BC Board. · For Pee Wee Girls for the 2010 season the pitching distance will be at 38’ to align with Softball Canada’s rule. · For the Midget C girls it will be at 40‘ with A & B at 43’. This allows that the A & B teams will pitch the same distance as the Softball Canada rule but will allow our C teams to remain at 40’ as their Provincial does not lead to a Western or Canadian. games. We are hoping they will be playingand training in South Delta. With the largenumber of boys we have in Learn to Play itwill be nice for them to see that baseball isnot the only game available to them as theyget older.

Break inIn August just prior to the Ladner Adultsmixed slow pitch league the concession wasbroken into. It appears that keys were usedto get into the concession umpire shed andbatting cage. All of the supplies from threefreezers were cleaned out and our new cashregister was smashed, but fortunatley it wasempty.

This combined with the theft of a $2000pitching machine last year has really set usback. So if you know anyone who was eatinghot dogs and hamburgers every night of theweek in August and September, or set up abatting cage in their back yard, please letus know.

Everyone loves to see themselves in action!

TreasurersReportAs the last fiscal year came to an end atSeptember 30, 2009, we finished up witha small surplus of just under $6,000 toadd to our net assets. We have beentrying to grow our assets in order toupgrade our batting cage, give our fieldsan overhaul and hopes of other capitalupgrades.

We submitted our application forgaming money in hopes of receiving$60,000, up from the $22,000 we havereceived in prior years. However, as withmany other not-for-profit organizations, this year our funding was cut, and wehave received just $6,900 towards our2010 season. With this cut in funding, wehave had to reduce our budgetallocations in many areas. In the past, wehave tried to subsidize our clinics offeredto the membership, but with the increasein gym rental costs and our tight budgetthis year, this is one area where themembership will see an increases overlast year’s costs.

At the AGM held in October, it wasmotioned to continue to restrict $30,000of our current cash for purpose ofupgrading the batting cage. We hope tohave this project completed in the 2010year. In prior years, we have purchasedequipment to help assist our coaches andplayers in enhancing basic skills. We askthat the entire organization please takeextra care in using these items, as we donot have the money available this yearfor any major additions or replacements.

We have budgeted to break even thisyear, it is unlikely there will be a surplus, but we are hoping not to have to dip intoour unrestricted net assets, ofapproximately $20,000, so that we cancontinue to grow these funds for futureupgrades.

MidgetsThere are a lot of girls moving up to Midgetand Junior this year. We are hoping to workwith Tssawwassen to ensure that no one isturned away. Let us know if you would beinterested and we can hold some workoutsessions to get an idea of the number ofplayers interested.

Tssawwassen & Ladner ExchangeRepresentativesIn order to take advantage of opportunities, and to coordinate our activities for thebenefit of both organizations, the TMSA andLMFA have exchanged members to sit oneach others boards. For Ladner, LMFA VicePresident Scott Wheatley will sit on theTMSA board and Scott Stoilen, President ofthe TMSA will sit on the LMFA board.Confused? Just ask for Scott!

After what seems like a life time, two of the LMFA’s mostdedicated executives will be retiring after the 2010 season.Randy Harris has played the part of the young dutch boyand kept our fields from flooding. Now he didn’t stick hisfinger in a dike but he was seen standing on second baseat 4:30 in the afternoon with a shop vac. (True story) Greg Mah stepped in to help out seven years ago andcoached a team and served as the LMFA head coach evenwhen his daughter played rep ball in Surrey. Both decided they need a rest. Randy and Greg haveagreed to stay on for one more year in order to help trainreplacements, but now that they are leaving we can

LMFA Executive Notesadmit that they each cover more than one person jobs. Alot of Greg’s job involves booking gyms, helping withsecurity checks for coaches, coaching seminars, registration, player evaluation spreadsheets andorganizing the draft night. So you would not have to be asoftball Guru for that side of the job. On the field maintenance side, Ladner is one of the feworganizations where parents and coaches don’t rake, lineand set up their own fields. We would sure like to keep itthat way. If you are interested in helping out, or just havequestions about what the positions entail please feel freeto go up and talk to the guys at the park.

An employee has embezzled more than $400,000 from the BCAmateur Softball Association, the organization’s president DennisBidin said. The money was siphoned off over two and a half years, mostly fromSoftball BC, which is part of the association, Bidin said. Softball BC, the governing body of softball in the province, has morethan 25,000 members on about 2,000 teams, including players, coaches and umpires, throughout the province. The employee stole $103,361 in fiscal 2008, $204,100 in fiscal 2009and $96,500 in fiscal 2010, which began May 1, Bidin said.

The previous year’s losses have been spread over two years. Butthis year’s $96,500 misappropriation cuts into the current budget,he said. It’s too early to tell if there will be a shortfall this year, he said. But,if needed, the organization will dip into its line of credit and repay itin the spring with money from fees, he said.“We are going to do a little belt-tightening, as far as doing more withless,” he said. LMFA would like to congratulate Maryah Copeland andHannah Callow for capturing gold medals at the 2009Provincial Squirt “C” Championships. Both girls wereselected by the Tsawwassen Bombers to play in theprovincials. The two girls fit right in with the team andturned out to be great additions to an already strongTsawwassen squad. Maryah, who was a fixture at the 2ndbase position, also came up big with her bat. Her strongdefence and timely hits were crucial in the Bomber’ssuccess. Hannah also had a great tournament, pitching 39innings and getting the nickname “Young Gun”.

The Bomber’s only loss came at the hands of Victoria’s“View Royal Vipers”, who were 34-0 going into theProvincials. The double-knockout format gave theBombers another chance and they took advantage. Theybeat Abbotsford 3-1 to advance to the “Provincial Final”against the unbeaten Victoria squad. Tsawwassen was notgoing to be denied and came out swinging, scoring runs ineach of the first three innings to go up by 6 runs. Theynever looked back, winning the game 20-4. This was a veryimpressive showing, considering the Victoria team hadnot lost a game all year. WAY TO GO GIRLS!

Congratulations Hannah Callowand Maryah CopelandProvincial Champions

Squirt Rep B program

2010 will see the launch of a trial program that will see Ladner enteringa Squirt B team in the lower mainland conference for the first time. These ladies are the ground breakers for a second time in their veryshort careers.

They were the first players in the LTP program that began five years agoand from there moved on the excel program which has run for the lasttwo. The 2009 season ended very well for our squirts when they and theBantam legit team traveled to Kelowna as our mentoring program wasintroduced to the rest of BC. The Excel group made up of first yearsquirts players and even had a LTP player as part of the squad lost in the

eam out of New West. The Bantam (too Legit to quit) team spent two weeks leading up the tournament practices with both teams cheering on the other every inning of the way at the big show in Kelowna.

when the Legit lost out in the quarter finals to the tournament champions that eventually went on to win the

l be approaching the upcoming season a little differently than most organizations. The program is linkedthat currently operated at both the Squirt level and under the leadership of Neil and Janice Malesku for theup of the starting nine who will play all year at this level exclusively and be supplemented by a group of

t and mite. the backbone of the program. The coaching staff of Clint Callow, Ralph Archibald, Rocky Mortimore and Neillayers at the Mite and Squirt level during the winter clinics and throughout the year. These players will stillclub teams but will train with the B team and be called up on a regular basis to play in both league andween two to four players being called up every week and depending on what is needed to fill out the 12 man

n opportunity to as many players as possible that are capable of playing at a higher level while still maintaining

ram we feel that the tremendous investment made in programs such as the pitching clinics, winter warm upm over the last few years is elevating the overall skill level of our association. This is something that was

ey building block for the success of our program. We cannot thank enough the executive, our parent coachesntors who have given back so much and supported the program through some very challenging times.

Kelowna Summer 2009

As many of you may have noticed our family service fees have been raised up to $100 per family. Even though the fee hasincreased the hourly requirement has not. We are only asking for five hours per family and we hope and expect that amajority of this time will be supplied by the players and not the parents. It is your league ladies and gentlemen, not your parents, so time to step up. A ton of people have worked hard to give youan opportunity to play ball and now it is time for you to give back to the next group of little kids coming up. There is noshortage of areas where we need help. Equipment day, uniform day, helping get the park ready for the season, coaching littlekids, working with Delta Special Olympic teams. setting up websites for the teams, emailing, phone calling. Blog or twitter, write articles, help with movie nights, sending out birthday cards, registration, or run our swap meet, help paint the buildings, video work, photographers, picture day, arrange the year end party, get sponsors. build signs, It is endless. Maybe you have ideas on what will make us even better. The LMFA wants to be the best, most progressive fastball associationin the province but it won’t happen by itself. STEP UP PEOPLE. IT IS YOUR TURN. This is not mommy and daddies league. It isyour league. Take charge!

The mentoring programstarted last year in aKelowna tournament. Each Bantam Legitplayer paired up with aplayer from the SquirtExcel Program. The twoteams did their warm-upstogether, cheered loudlyfrom the bleachers andcoached one another.Aside from the coachingside of the game the girlsdeveloped a friendship asthe Legit became “bigsisters” for the youngsquirts. This year LadnerMinor Fastpitch is lookingto expand on thisexperience and give otherplayers a chance to become a part of it. This upcoming season LMFA is looking for olderteens to help coach some games, practices, andclinics, all on a part time basis, as well as be ‘rovermentors’ whenever they are at the park.

Coaching: Any teenslooking to coacha team will bepaired up withan adult coach.Together theywill run teamtraining sessionsand games. Theteenagers canwork in apartner/groupsystem wherethey and a friendcan both coach ateam or rotatewhich nights.

Mentors, Friends and Tons of Fun

Doug Harris

LMFA Mentoring Program

Clinics: Clinics are run throughout the year. Mentors canstop in whenever they are available; they just needto let the coach know before hand. Clinics varybetween defense batting, base running, pitching andcatching.

Practice:Teen mentors can also help out at the Excel practices.Mostly helping out with the same things they wouldin a clinic.Rover Mentors: As a rover mentor teens walk around the parkwatching games. In between innings the mentors areto give advice to players. Rover mentors would bemainly for pitchers. All mentors are overseen by Doug Harris. Thementoring program is a great way to pay off the LMFAservice fee and get volunteer hours for school whilebeing a role model for young fastpitch players. If you are interested or just have questions pleasecontact Doug Harris [email protected] or Fred [email protected]
