The Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

In our gospel today, John the Baptist pointed at Jesus and said, “BEHOLD, the LAMB of GOD, who takes away the sin of the world!” As Jesus “takes away the sin of the world” he is then the protector of LIFE, because LIFE is sacred; it is a sign of God’s love and glory. And today, the Church celebrates SANCTITY OF LIFE SUNDAY! Let us energize our conscience with our resolve to embrace the SANCTITY OF LIFE! God “created us as individuals, by name, and reserved a special place for each of us in His Kingdom. He loves each of us, no matter what our state in life, unconditionally. Our lives belong to him and not to the state or to society. The fundamental rights given to us by God cannot be violated by any man-made law. And despite the fact that the problems of old age, crisis pregnancies, and alcoholism were certainly present in Jesus’ time, there is not one instance in the Scriptures where Jesus advocated or supported the destruction of human life as a solution.” So, anything that is a threat to the SACREDNESS OF LIFE must be denounced. And today, as we celebrate the SANCTITY OF LIFE, and as the unborn are in constant danger in the womb of a mother, let the prayer of the late Pope John Paul II to Mary, the mother of Jesus, be our constant prayer:

O Mary, bright dawn of the new world, Mother of the living, to you do we entrust the cause of life:

look down, O Mother, upon the numbers of babies not allowed to be born, of the poor whose lives are made difficult,

of men and women who are victims of brutal violence, of the elderly and the sick killed…out of misguided mercy.

Grant that all who believe in your Son may proclaim the Gospel of life with honesty and love to the people of our time.

Obtain for the grace to accept that Gospel as a gift ever new, the joy of celebrating it with gratitude throughout their lives

and the courage to bear witness to it resolutely, in order to build, together with all people of good will, the civilization of truth and love, to the praise and glory of God, the Creator and lover of life. Amen

Remember, your LIFE is SACRED; it is HOLY! Embrace it with LOVE, nourish it with care. You are God’s masterpiece; you are God’s glory!

SAINT AGNES (died 304) January 21

Writing about Saint Agnes in the year 377, Saint Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, declared: “This is a virgin’s birthday into heaven: let us imitate her chastity! And a martyr’s heavenly birthday: let us offer ourselves in sacrifice!” Chastity: mastery of oneself in order to give of oneself whether in the priestly, religious, married, or single state. Sacrifice: “to make holy,” to set someone or something apart for service. Ambrose knew these virtues indispensable for discipleship, but challenging to practice in his world—or our own. Barely a teenager, Agnes faced gruesome tortures bravely and, when ordered to worship pagan gods, boldly made the Sign of the Cross instead. Thus, her youthful courage strengthened adult believers who wavered under persecution or grew indifferent when persecutions passed. To bestow on Agnes its highest honor and keep her witness fresh in believers’ hearts, the Church inscribed her name at the heart of the Eucharistic liturgy, in the Roman Canon (Eucharistic Prayer I), until Vatican II the Roman Church’s only Eucharistic Prayer. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. Reflecting on God’s Word To be a disciple of Jesus Christ means to learn from him. He is the teacher, we the students; he is the master, we his servants. But what is it we are to learn? One important title for Jesus is the Lamb of God who has come to serve by taking away our sin. He serves by leading us to participate in the holiness of God. We are to do the same for others. Jesus came to understand his own calling by reading and praying the book of the prophet Isaiah, especially the four poems found there called the Servant Songs. Today we hear part of the second song in which the servant professes how he was formed as servant from the womb, not only to bring back Israel to God, but to be a light to the nations, so God’s “salvation may reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). Those who serve Jesus as disciples are to join in this work of bringing God’s salvation to the world. Paul recognizes this in his greeting to the Corinthians, noting his call to be an apostle of Christ, one sent by God to the church at Corinth, which has been made holy in Christ and called to be holy. Paul is sent not only to them, but to “all those everywhere who call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 1:2). God’s will is our holiness. By responding to the call to know Jesus as the Lamb of God, we accept the invitation to participate in this holiness and become the vehicle for inviting others to dwell there. —James A. CALLED TO BE HOLY With this Sunday we begin Ordinary Time. The readings tell us about God’s relationship with Israel and John the Baptist’s relationship with Jesus. Israel’s relationship with God is so close, so intimate, that it is through Israel that God’s “salvation [will] reach to the ends of the earth” (Isaiah 49:6). But we know from John the Baptist that for Israel to accomplish God’s will, it must also recognize that Jesus is the Son of God. During these weeks we also get to know Jesus. We begin to understand more deeply our relationship to Jesus and what that relationship means for us, who are “called to be holy” (1 Corinthians 1:2). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families

Second Sunday of Ordinary Time: John: 1: 29-34

On the Way to Mass: How would you respond if someone asked you, “whose disciple are you” On the Way Home From Mass: John the Baptist was Jesus’ cousin and undoubtedly knew him his whole life. He knew that Jesus wad the Son of God, the Messiah that the people had been waiting for. Explain to your children that we recognize God’s presence, too: at the Mass, he is present in the Word, he is present in the Eucharist, and in the worshipping assembly. Living the Word: The saints all witnessed to the glory and love of God by their lives. Like John, their words and actions were directed to give glory to God. Look at the lives of two or three of your favorite saints. How did they witness to God? How did their lives give glory to God? Discuss some ways you can witness to God’s love in your daily life.

Parent Talk:

My family had stopped listening to me. The more I talked to (at) them, the more obvious it was that they were tuning me out. I tried talking louder and repeating myself but the problem only got worse.

Finally, I how I was talking to them. I was so stressed by our busy pace that I barked constantly. “Hurry up, we are late!” “Stop talking with your mouth full.” “Clean up that nasty bedroom.” “What? You forgot your homework?!” For every kind remark I made, I snarled five negative ones.

That very moment, I changed my tune. I called a family meeting and apologized. Then I gave each child just five tasks on which to focus. I let the rest go. The change in the atmosphere of our home was immediately noticeable. I continue to monitor the way I communicate and everyone pays more attention to what I say.

Partners in Faith - January 2020

Making parent- and child-friendly resolutions Making New Year’s resolutions helps us to become better people each year. Consider helping children choose appropriate resolutions for the New Year, too. Share kindness. Encourage children to perform one random act of kindness each week. When they look for ways to be kind, kindness becomes a mindset. Develop better habits. Taking small steps to improve will help new positive habits last. If you want to eat healthier, try, “I’m going to drink milk and water today instead of soda or juice.” To cut down on screen time, consider reading for 30 minutes instead of watching TV or playing on devices. Achieve milestones. Children love setting goals as a way of measuring progress and growth. Encourage children to pick an age-appropriate goal – getting an A in the hardest subject at school, learning to tie shoes, master swimming underwater – and focus on steps to achieve it. Encourage prayer. Try choosing one prayer to say together as a family each day. Let children add a favorite prayer to their personal prayer time.

Why do Catholics need to share their faith?

Catholicism about having a relationship with Jesus Christ, who shows God’s love to us. God became man, died and rose from the dead, and re-opened Heaven for us. At Mass, he strengthens us with his Body and Blood in the Eucharist. Our faith tells us that the perfect, infinite love we seek has a face and a name. Like the Woman at the Well, once we encounter Christ, we can’t keep him to ourselves. We have to share him.

First Grade Class By Sharon Bird

We are now in the second semester. Wow! This school year is moving along so quickly. The students made goals for the month of January. Each child will visit with me on Friday to discuss the progress of his/her goal or to make needed changes. We also have a class goal. This goal is for all of us. Each Friday we will discuss that goal and our progress. In math, we will continue to study addition and subtraction. In science, we will start our new topic—Sky and Earth. We will learn that the sun is a star that provides heat and light to the Earth. We will also learn about the moon and the moon phases. The students will learn about what causes day and night. We will also discuss gravity and the stars. We will celebrate Chinese New Year on January 24. We will be doing activities during the day. The students will also learn about Martin Luther King, Jr. On Fridays we will continue to do science labs (STEM /engineering activities).

Third Grade Class By Amanda Brill

Catholic Schools Week is quickly approaching! We love celebrating our outstanding and unique school. We will soon be creating a bulletin board entitled “100 Reasons

Why We Love Our School.” I can’t wait to see the kid’s responses. We are so lucky and blessed to have the best, loving catholic school family, here at St. Agnes! If you are around, come take a peek and see their responses!

We are busy and moving right along academically! We recently got a special delivery from the Rotary Club. They gave us all brand-new dictionaries. These have come in handy during Vocabulary during the new semester. The kids love having dictionary races and expanding their vocabulary. We are starting our next science chapter over Life Cycles and Traits. We are learning so much with our new science curriculum.

In math, we have started division and the introduction of fractions. We are enjoying it so far! In social studies, we have been talking about civil rights leaders. We have learned lots about Martin Luther King Jr. We are discussing the Bill of Rights and how they are rules we follow like the ten commandments. We will soon be learning about the past presidents in the month of February.

These kids have grown so much and matured over the school year thus far. Each of the students got awards at the last Quarterly Awards. I am so proud of their accomplishments and improvements! We have grown very close, and it will be hard letting them go on to fourth grade!
