A Human Family Takes Care of Their Own
In ancient Roman law, a father of a family had great power. He
could even decide on the life or death of his babies. If that father
decided he did not want one of his children because of poor health or
physical handicap or gender or for whatever reason, he could send that
child to the woods or to a garbage dump, where he or she would
probably die.
But the early Christians recognized this was wrong and
condemned it. Many Christians even went searching for abandoned
babies and took them home. They would try to nurse the children back
to health, or at least to give those boys and girls some comfort as they
died. Even though those Christians were not directly related to the
discarded babies, they treated them with love, as if they were members
of their own family!
Imagine you had a newborn son or daughter at your home, and a
vicious gang forced their way into your home and demanded that baby.
What would you do to protect that little boy or girl? You might offer
the gang money to leave your house. You might try to run away with the baby in your arms. You might do your best
to physically prevent that gang from getting near your baby. But you would certainly do something to try to protect
your baby. You would never even think of giving the child to them because “this baby cries too much,” or “she is
very sickly” or “he is handicapped” or “we already have more children than we can afford” or “this baby was
unplanned.”
If your newborn baby was in danger, you would do all you could to protect him or her. In fact, even if it was
a neighbor’s baby in danger, you would recognize him or her as a member of the human family, and as somebody
deserving of your protection.
What can we do to protect the weakest and most defenseless members of the human family, the prenatal
babies? In the United States, in the late 1800’s, as prenatal development became more widely known, all 50 states
passed laws to prohibit or at least restrict the deliberate killing of unborn girls and boys. But on January 22, 1973,
the U. S. Supreme Court overturned the restrictions on abortion in all 50 states. Their infamous decision, Roe vs.
Wade, allowed abortion at any time before birth. 48 years and millions of abortions later, that unjust and senseless
decision still stands.
It is certainly true that parents who are expecting the birth of a baby sometimes have extremely difficult
problems and they may think that abortion is their only option. But the deliberate killing of an innocent human being
is never the only alternative, and it is never the right option. We need to do what we can not only to help protect the
prenatal babies, but also to help their parents to make the right
decisions about those babies. In genuine concern for those who
have done wrong, we should also help those who have committed
abortion to seek forgiveness from our most merciful God.
We have a special duty to protect the most vulnerable
members of the human family. The prenatal boys and girls are in
danger not only in the last months before birth, but also much
earlier, even when they do not look as much like a newborn baby.
As Jesus told us, “Whatsoever you do to the least of My brothers,
that you do unto Me” (Mt. 25:40). May the Blessed Virgin Mary,
who greatly loved the prenatal Jesus she carried within her, help
us to love and protect the “least” of our brothers and sisters.

Holy Mass All of our regular Masses are open to the public (see front cover). Everyone over the
age of 2 must wear a facemask. If you are
feeling sick, coughing or sneezing, please
stay at home at this time. There is currently
no obligation to attend Mass. All our
Masses can be seen online at our website:

Confessions Confessions will be in the main church
Monday and Wednesday at 7:30 pm,
and Saturday at 2 pm. Confessions
will be in the parish hall 30 minutes
before each Sunday Mass. You must
wear a facemask and stand in line with
social distancing while waiting for con-
fession.

and the latest announcements for
our parishioners. They are
available in our church and in a box
in front of the parish office. You

For all other questions, please call our office dur-
ing the hours listed on the front page. Donations can be
dropped off at the slot in the door of the parish office,
or you can sign up for easy online giving at our web-
site. If you need to visit our office for any reason, you

Join the community of St. Patrick for an hour of Exposition and Adoration in English every third Wednesday of the month. This Holy Hour of Eucharistic devotion will be held from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the church. Confessions will be available during this Holy Hour. Next Adoration date is set for January 20, in English. Don’t miss this awesome and beautiful opportunity to pray with your Community. We are very excited and blessed to be able to have Adoration in the Church. We must follow all rules and regulations the same as we do during mass times. Everyone must wear a mask and seat six feet apart unless you live in the same household. We also need four to six volunteers to stay after adora-tion to sanitize the church pews.

La próxima Adoración Eucarística será el miércoles, 20 de enero en ingles. No se pierda esta maravillosa y gran oportunidad de orar con su comunidad. Estamos muy emocionados y bendecidos de anunciar que tendremos Adoración en la Iglesia. Debemos seguir todas las reglas y regulaciones al igual que lo hacemos durante la misa. Todos deben usar una máscara y sentarse a una distancia de seis pies al menos que vivan en el mismo hogar. Una Familia Humana Cuida de los Suyos
En el derecho romano antiguo, un padre de familia tenía un gran
poder. Incluso podría decidir sobre la vida o la muerte de sus bebés. Si
ese padre decidía que no quería a uno de sus hijos debido a su mala salud
o discapacidad física o género o por cualquier motivo, podía enviar a ese
niño al bosque o a un basurero, donde probablemente moriría.
Pero los primeros cristianos reconocieron que esto estaba mal y
lo condenaron. Muchos cristianos incluso fueron a buscar bebés abando-
nados y se los llevaron a casa. Intentarían ayudar a que los niños recupe-
raran la salud, o al menos darles un poco de consuelo a esos niños y ni-
ñas mientras morían. Aunque esos cristianos no estaban directamente
relacionados con los bebés descartados, los trataron con amor, ¡como si
fueran miembros de su propia familia!
Imagina que tienes un hijo o una hija recién nacidos en tu casa, y
una pandilla viciosa se abrió paso a la fuerza en tu casa y exigió ese be-
bé. ¿Qué harías para proteger a ese niño o niña? Puede ofrecerle dinero a
la pandilla para que salga de su casa. Puede intentar huir con el bebé en brazos. Puede hacer todo lo posible para evitar
físicamente que esa pandilla se acerque a su bebé. Pero ciertamente haría algo para tratar de proteger a su bebé. Nunca
pensarías en darles el niño porque “este bebé llora demasiado” o “está muy enferma” o “está discapacitado” o “ya te-
nemos más hijos de los que podemos pagar” o “este bebé estaba no planificado."
Si su bebé recién nacido estuviera en peligro, haría todo lo posible para protegerlo. De hecho, incluso si fuera
el bebé de un vecino en peligro, lo reconocería como un miembro de la familia humana y como alguien que merece su
protección.
¿Qué podemos hacer para proteger a los miembros más débiles e indefensos de la familia humana, los bebés
prenatales? En los Estados Unidos, a fines del siglo XIX, cuando el desarrollo prenatal se hizo más conocido, los 50
estados aprobaron leyes para prohibir o al menos restringir el asesinato deliberado de niños y niñas por nacer. Pero el
22 de enero de 1973, la Corte Suprema de Estados Unidos revocó las restricciones al aborto en los 50 estados. Su infa-
me decisión, Roe vs. Wade, permitió el aborto en cualquier momento antes del nacimiento. 48 años y millones de
abortos después, esa decisión injusta y sin sentido sigue en pie.
Ciertamente es cierto que los padres que esperan el nacimiento de un bebé a veces tienen problemas extrema-
damente difíciles y pueden pensar que el aborto es su única opción. Pero el asesinato deliberado de un ser humano
inocente nunca es la única alternativa y nunca es la opción correcta. Necesitamos hacer todo lo posible no solo para
ayudar a proteger a los bebés prenatales, sino también para
ayudar a sus padres a tomar las decisiones correctas sobre
esos bebés. En genuina preocupación por aquellos que han
hecho mal, también debemos ayudar a aquellos que han
abortado a buscar el perdón de nuestro Dios misericordioso.
Tenemos el deber especial de proteger a los miembros más
vulnerables de la familia humana. Los niños y niñas prena-
tales están en peligro no solo en los últimos meses antes del
nacimiento, sino también mucho antes, incluso cuando no
se parecen tanto a un bebé recién nacido. Como Jesús nos
dijo: “Todo lo que hagas al más pequeño de Mis hermanos,
eso me lo haces a mí” (Mt. 25:40). Que la Santísima Virgen
María, que amó mucho al Jesús prenatal que llevaba en su
interior, nos ayude a amar y proteger al “más pequeño” de
nuestros hermanos y hermanas.

Father of goodness and love, hear our prayers for the sick members of our community
and for all who are in need. Amid mental and physical suffering may they find conso-
lation in your healing presence. Show your mercy as you close wounds, cure illnesses,
make broken bodies whole and free downcast spirits. May these special people find
lasting health and deliverance, and so join us in thanking you for all your gifts. We
ask this through our Lord Jesus who healed those who believed. Amen!
