With the close of the Church’s Christmas season, we have begun Ordinary Time in the liturgical calendar. In ecclesial language, ‘ordinary’ means the weeks and months between the great seasons of Advent/Christmas and Lent/Easter. Easter and Christmas anchor the Church’s calendar, with their attendant seasons preceding and following these pinnacle solemnities. By ‘ordinary’ we do not mean plain, inferior or uninteresting, but rather the other sense of the word’s meaning: regular, routine, normal. Ordinary Time has two extended periods in our calendar: from

the end of the Christmas Season (Baptism of the Lord) to the beginning of Lent and from the end of the Easter Season (Pentecost Sunday) to the beginning of Advent. That means that more than half of our Church year is made up of the weeks of Ordinary Time, from the First Week to the Thirty-Fourth Week. The Church has wisely structured the liturgical calendar as a way to teach us the faith. Sunday is the weekly remembrance of the Paschal Mystery, the solemn celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection following his suffering and death. During the weekdays in Ordinary Time, we celebrate various solemnities, feasts and memorials honoring the Lord Jesus, his mother, Mary, the angels, the apostles, the saints and significant events in the life of the Church. These liturgical celebrations have been wisely woven by our Church into a kind of pattern that helps us learn our faith week in and week out as we move through the cold days of winter, the promise of spring, the comfort of summer and the richness of autumn. The liturgical calendar can become so embedded in our Catholic consciousness that we can take for granted what has been carefully arranged for catechetical purposes by the Church. Further, the Sunday readings for Mass are structured into three (3) cycles: Years A, B and C. This enables us to emphasize a different synoptic gospel (Matthew, Mark or Luke) each year, read through the New Testament letters, acts and revelation, and hear the major parts of the Old Testament during our Sunday liturgical celebrations. If you are paying attention at Mass, you review the whole of the Bible across this three-year cycle. Who says Catholics don’t read the Sacred Scriptures? You’ll further notice the change in the liturgical color for Ordinary Time. The priest and deacon will wear green vestments, rather that the white of Christmas and Easter, the violet of Advent and Lent, or the red for the Holy Spirit, the apostles and the martyrs. Please realize that all these changes and ritual practices are not random or arbitrary. Rather, they have been carefully planned, arranged and developed by our holy mother the Church to teach her beloved sons and daughters the gospel of Jesus Christ. Rev. Richard A. Infante, Pastor

The priests, parishioners and staff of Our Lady of Grace Parish would like to welcome any

visitors who are celebrating Mass with us today.
