BIRDWATCHING IN THE WINTER Birdwatching during the winter can be exciting, since birds don’t hibernate like some animals – they need to eat all year long, due to their high metabolism. Winter birdwatchers often enjoy looking for birds that come to our area only during the colder months, such as snow geese, gulls and sparrows like the dark-eyed junco. “Flying south for the winter” carries a different meaning for birds native to Missouri and Illinois than it does for birds from farther north, like Canada. While most birdwatchers typically love seeing the contrast of brightly-colored birds like cardinals and blue jays against the drab greys or bright whites of winter, it can also be a fun challenge to try to catch a glimpse of birds with muted colors that are easily camouflaged by dense forests in the warmer months. When trees are without their leaves, birdwatchers may have more success spotting hairy and pileated woodpeckers, for instance. Nocturnal birds, like great horned and barred owls, are seen more frequently in the winter, since the sun sets earlier. Other species, like some waterfowl, mate during the winter and thus display their brightest plumage during the coldest part of the year – a treat for winter birdwatchers. "What to Know About

Winter Birding," Forest Preserve District of Will County, www.reconnectwithnature.org.

WINTER BIRDFEEDER TIPS • Place birdfeeders near varied

habitats, such as a forest close to a body of water – easy to accomplish at Innsbrook!

• Display a birdfeeder where it is visible from indoors and enjoy birdwatching from the warmth of your home.

• Use more birdfeeders in the winter, since insects aren’t available in the ground.

• Offer both suet and seed to appeal to the greatest variety of birds.• Natural wood birdhouses combined with or near a birdfeeder

can offer warmth and shelter from the elements. Avoid metal and plastic materials.

• Bird houses and feeders should be free of hazards such as paint, glitter or decorations, and kept away from brush, where predators can hide.
