    BY NEIL SPERRY

    Dear Neil: We have two

huge oaks in our front yard.

    tree trimmer was coming

    through our neighborhood,

and we hired him. My big-

est concern is that he did

not paint or tar the larger

    branches where he made his

    cuts. Should I be concerned?

Research has shown thatpruning paint often slows

the healing of cut surfaces.or that reason, its usually

    not recommended. However,

my personal feeling is that alight coat of pruning sealant

is always a good idea whenwere talking about oaks,

particularly in areas whereoak wilt is known to be aproblem. At least its good

that he came by in the win-ter, since thats the best time

to prune oak trees. I cant gomuch farther, though, with-

out recommending that younever again let an unknownperson do any kind of work

on your trees.Texas is blessed with hun-

dreds of skilled, certified ar-borists whose work is stel-

lar. People who drive downstreets soliciting work are

suspect. Id recommend thatyou take photos of the workhe did for you and show

them to a Master Certifiedursery Professional. He

or she can advise if the cutswere done properly. One ofthe worst things that can be

done in pruning is to leavean elongated stub of the

original branch. That kindof pruning leads to decay of

the stub, then decay in the

    trunk. Also, hopefully he

didnt top the trees. Thatsnever a good practice.

Dear Neil: I need a tree

    to cover a flat-roofed corner

room to protect it from the

summer sun. The room is 12

    by 12 feet. Please advise.

    Use a mid-sized tree such

as a Little Gem southernmagnolia, golden raintree orMexican plum. Of the three,

the magnolia tends to growmore upright, so it wouldnt

necessarily hang over theroof very far if you planted iteight or 10 feet out from the

house. However, its not veryfast-growing, so the shade

may be several years away.Raintrees and Mexican

plums are more rounded, sothey would definitely needto be 8 to 12 feet (or far-

ther) away from the house.Tall crape myrtle varieties

(20 feet and taller) couldalso accomplish the same

thing more quickly. Manyof them grow to 20 feet andtaller. You could plant three

of them on 15-foot centers. They should be 8 or 10 feet

    out from the side walls.

    Dear Neil: Moles and go-

    phers are ruining our yard.

    The moles are eating the

roots off our grass, and then

it dies. There are burrows all

    over. Its dangerous even to

    walk across the lawn. The

    gophers are tearing up what

    the moles havent gotten to.

What can we do?Im going to borrow the

    answer directly from the

Most Asked Questions pag-es of my own Web site (www.

    neilsperry.com).First, identify the pest

    accurately. Gophers are ro-

dents and resemble squir-rels in their head and facial

features. They feed on rootsthey encounter while dig-

    ging.

    They may also feed on

above-ground plant partsthat are near their tunnels.Gopher mounds are usu-

ally kidney-shaped and aremade of finely sifted soils.

Gopher mounds are usuallylarger, and they often line

up with one another. Placepoison baits in the tunnels,

then seal up the holes youhave made. (Note that ul-trasonic devices and plants

that are purported to drivegophers away are virtually

    useless.)Moles, by comparison,

    are related to bats. They

are insectivores. They haveno external ears, and their

eyes are located within theirear canals. You will usually

find them in cool, moist soilswhere there are ample sup-plies of grub worms and

    earthworms. Moles produce volcano-shaped mounds

of soil clods. Control themwith traps that are pushed

into depressed areas of thesurface tunnels. The trapsare activated as the moles

try to open the tunnels backup again.

    Dear Neil: As we get

    ready for the new gardening

    season, Id like your advice

on how we can find a really

    reputable irrigation contrac-

    tor, arborist and landscape

    planner. We want to make

some big changes, but I dont

    want to get ripped off.

There are many goodways. Ask friends who have

used the services of any ofthose segments of the hor-

ticultural industry. And, askthe service companies for

    references, and then checkthem out.

    Ask for credentials and

then check up on them. Dealwith independent retail gar-

den centers where you cantalk to the owners and man-agers, and where theyll be

selling plants and answer-ing questions 12 months a

year. In fact, your nursery-man can refer you to a good

arborist in your area, andhe or she will also know thegood irrigation companies.

The nursery may have alandscape designer, or they

can refer you to a good land-scape contractor who can

    design and/or install.!

    Have a question youd

    like Neil to consider? Mail

it to him in care of the Wise

    County Messenger, P.O. Box

    149, Decatur, TX 76234 or e-

    mail him at mailbag@sper-

that he cannot reply to ques-

    tions individually.

    By DENNY DEADY

    Jennifer Haney has accomplished much

in her 34 years and Saturdays book signing

party represents one more step in reaching

    her lofty goals.

    Haney, a Decatur resident and

single mother of two girls, will host

a book release party at 7 p.m. Sat-

urday, Jan. 17, at Armondos Mexi-

can Restaurant on U.S. 81/287 in

ecatur, to promote her first pub-

    ished book, Divorce Handbook,

ow to Get a Divorce Without Los-

    ng Your A**.

    Fifteen divorces within her fam-

    ly, including her own, prompted

aney to write the book. She says

ts not a how to book, but rather a per-sonal plan, a life plan if you will.

Youve got to take care of yourself, when

going through a divorce, Haney said. You

ant fill anyone else if your cup is dry.

Continuing, she said the book is, about

value true value, about not losing your-

    self.

She said when her mom was going through

her divorce, she tried to take care of every-

    one else, neglecting herself.

Her mom is the reason she is donating a

portion of all book sales to the Wise Hope

Shelter and Crisis Center and why the book

signing party is a benefit for the shelter.

I didnt have an abusive relationship but

my mom did and at the time, there was no

    shelter available, Haney said.

Haney is asking that guests bring newitems to the party that can be donated to

the shelter, like gift cards, toiletries, laun-

dry supplies, date books, makeup, umbrel-

    las, childrens movies and food.

Family is important to Haney and they

    have greatly influenced her writing.

She has written a childrens book, in honor

of her daughters, Amellia Hurtado, 10, andSarah Hurtado, 9. Her grandmother, Joann

Manning, taught her how to tell a story.

    Haneys publisher is Publish America,

and even though the company mis-

spelled the title on the cover of the

book, she is happy with the results.

She takes the mishap with the

    same goodnatured attitude that

has carried her through the rough

    times in her life.

    Writing has always been Haneys

passion. As a third grader, she re-

    ceived national recognition for her

    writing. Today, she keeps three

journals one for her eyes only, one

that it would be OK for someone to

pick up and read and a third with ideas forother books she wants to write.

After growing up in Chico, Haney moved to

Austin and graduated from Westlake High

School. She later graduated from Weather-

ford College and is now two semesters away

from a bachelors degree in journalism at the

University of North Texas. In between, she

honed her writing skills during two years at

    theBridgeport Index.

She is already working on two other books,

one that she hopes will help people under-

stand bipolar disorder and help them deal

with people, like herself, who have the con-

dition. The other book, Cantina Diaries,

comes from her observations while working

    at Armondos.

With the release of her first book, she is

giving up her job at Armondos but keepingher day job at BGrand on the square in De-

catur, where the book will be sold.

I never thought I would be able to sup-

port myself with my talent but now I see

    that I can, Haney said.

In 2002, a clinical trial was halted after it found that postmenopausal

women who took combination hormone replacement therapy (estrogen and

progestin) had a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, blood clots,

and cancer. Much more recently, women are being warned that an increased

risk of breast cancer lingers after women stop taking combination hormone

replacement therapy. Within a few years, the increased risk for stroke,

serious blood clots, and heart disease associated with taking combination

HRT disappears (as does the benefits to bones). However, the risk of

breast cancer remains significantly elevated. Thus, women who have taken

combination HRT in the past should discuss this fact with their doctors and

    have mammograms at suggested intervals.

Hormone therapy is complex and there are many factors for you and your

doctor to consider. The specific hormone replacement therapy you choose,

how much of it you take, when you take it, and the form in which you take it

    - all have an impact on how it will work for you. It is best for you to discuss

these factors with your health care provider. To schedule an appointment for

gynecological care, call WISE OBSTETRICS & GYNECOLOGY P.Aat 940-626-8008. The office is conveniently located at 1713 South FM 51,

Ste. 201, Decatur. New patients are welcome.

P.S. When used at a minimum effective dose for the shortest possible

time, HRT is an effective treatment for the short-term relief of menopausal

    symptoms.

Want to make some Newears resolutions this year

hat you actually mighteep? It really isnt that dif-cult and it pays benefits.

esolutions usually meanositive changes, and well-

ade resolutions help avoidhe problems that come withoor resolutions quickly bro-

    en.While a broken New

ears resolution might notseem very important, for

some people it actually canbe. From a mental health

perspective, broken resolu-tions are sometimes harm-

ful because they can have usseeing ourselves as failures,

falling short of our goals. Abroken New Years resolu-tion is another example of

how weak we are, helpingto erode self-confidence and

    self-esteem.That doesnt mean you

    shouldnt make New Years

resolutions. They offer awonderful opportunity to

examine where you are andto set goals for the things

youd like to change. The most important ele-

ment for good resolutionsis to make them realistic.

Youre not going to lose 25pounds by the end of Janu-

ary or immediately look likean Olympic athlete if itsbeen years since youve been

near the gym.One way to make suc-

cessful resolutions is to setrealistic mileposts. Thatmeans breaking big tasks

into smaller, more manage-able units. If youre resolv-

ing to lose weight, forget thenumber of pounds you want

to shed and instead focus onmoving to a healthier diet

that will naturally lead toweight loss. Maybe your

first mini-goal is to cut outone high calorie food each

day or week and to replaceit with a healthier fruit orvegetable.

If your resolution is to ex-ercise more, start slowly with

an initial goal, say walking15 minutes each day, thatyou know you can achieve.

Similarly, if its smokingthat you want to stop, maybe

your first goal is to cut by 10percent the number of ciga-

rettes you smoke each day,or to contact your doctor or

local hospital to learn aboutsmoking cessation programs

and stop-smoking aids. When you create realistic

resolutions with attainablemini-goals, what youre re-ally doing is developing

a plan to reach your finalgoal. Attainable mini-goals

toward that bigger overalltarget are a way to ensuresuccess, to focus on posi-

tive behavioral changes andto feel good about the suc-

cesses youre achieving. This all adds up to positive

reinforcement that will helpkeep you going and increase

your chances for successful-ly fulfilling that resolution.

    SUDOKU SOLUTIONS

    Although it sounds

strange, you may encoun-er situations in which you

ave to accept money even ifoud rather not. Such is the

ase with required minimumistributions (RMDs) from

our traditional IRA, 401(k)r other employer-sponsoredetirement plan. But thanks

o recent legislation, you cangnore the required part of

MDs at least for a year.Specifically, lawmak-

    rs recently placed a one-

ear moratorium on takingRMDs) for 2009. If youre

ot familiar with the rulesgoverning RMDs, heres a

ittle background: Generally,he IRS requires you to beginaking RMDs in the year in

which you turn 70-1/2, or no

later than April 1 of the fol-lowing year. For example, if

you turn 70-1/2 in 2009, youwould normally be required

to take your first RMD byApril 1, 2010. You must also

think about RMDs if youare a beneficiary of someoneelses IRA, 401(k) or other

retirement account, becausewhen the account owner

dies, regardless of age, youmust generally begin takingRMDs. And this is also true

if you are the beneficiaryof a Roth IRA, even though

Roth IRA owners are neverrequired to take RMDs.

But thanks to the newlegislation, you can skip therequired 2009 distribution if

you reach 70-1/2 in 2009 or if

youre a beneficiary currentlyrequired to take RMDs. You

also have until Dec. 31, 2010,to accept the 2010 RMD,

which will be based on yourretirement account balance

at the end of 2009.Why did Congress decide

    to provide this RMD holi-

day for 2009? For the an-swer, you need look no far-

ther than your IRA or 401(k)account balance. As you arewell aware, 2008 was not a

stellar year for the stock mar-ket. Consequently, as 2008

drew to a close, the market value of your IRA or 401(k)

was probably considerablylower than it was in earlieryears. This could have been a

problem for you if you had to

start taking RMDs in 2009,because these distributions

are based, in part, on youraccount balance at the close

of the previous year whichmeans you may well have

had to sell some stocks orother investments in yourretirement plan when their

price was down. To help peo-ple avoid having to sell low,

    Congress acted.Ultimately, you will have

    to end up taking distribu-

tions again. But before thathappens, take some time to

decide how large a distribu-tion you should accept each

year. If you need the money, you might have to take outmore than the RMD. But if

you can get by on just the

minimum distribution, youmay want to do so, thereby

keeping as much of your re-tirement account as possible

    in a tax-deferred account.
